  1. Typical. Pre-order promotion (free battery grip) for the G9 ends 24th of this month. Do think it's time to get rid of some camera gear though. D5300 has served me well, but a liveview approach for stills on this is the worst and the video capabilities... so-so, it's just no mirrorless camera with all the innovation and features. Do love me some APS-C/S35 goodness, but... apparently you can't have it all. The original E-M1... has been a good sport too, but is starting to feel dated and most of the more dedicated stills shooting happens with the G80 these days. That one itself has been great too, but it's probably a good idea to ditch all three and get myself in on that G9 promo and make that one the new dedicated stills cam. And then the GH5... what is the GH5s going to do? Will it be the ultimate video focused camera to compliment the G9? Or will the GH5 hold its own? Hum. Anyways, one thing's for sure: Panasonic is on top of the game and they're coming after our wallets!

  2. That certainly is not the kind of "low light" scenario where a GH5/G80/etc would be unacceptable. Check out the Feelworld F570 (or F550) 5" is ok ish for pulling focus, but bigger is better. This is why 7" or large is ideal for a 1st AC. While 5" ish or less is ideal for a cam op.

  3. Dropped by to say thanks to Andrew Reid and everyone on this sub-forum for generously sharing their knowledge ... and add that I think the NX1 is still very relevant in today's market. Here's my story, I was looking for a small and light B Cam for a Red Dragon and decided to spend the last month really getting to know the NX1 because I like how close the out-of-camera images look to the Red. I advocate for not heavily grading DSLR images and trying to get as close to what I can in-camera ... playing to the DSLR's strengths and avoiding its weaknesses, like codec and bit rates. I shot this with the NX1 and a DJI Mavic as a test, all images are ungraded, straight out of camera and through Premiere's and Youtube's compression ... EQUIPMENT USED . Samsung NX1 with Canon EF 35mm and Samsung NX 16-50mm PZ. . Beholder DS1 . DJI Mavic NX1 SETTINGS . Vasile hack 180Mbps . Master Black Level +10 . Gamma DR . Custom Profile R0.90/G0.92/B1.10, Sharpness-10, Contrast-5 . Smartrange on . DIS on PS. I had trouble with focusing but have figured out how to assign peaking to the speed dial now, haha, should help. PPS. the DIS does work well but occasionally does some funky things so I learned that it's important to review the footage carefully.

  4. Knock yourself out. Take those awesome specs and actually film something interesting. That's what it's there for.

  6. @Mark Romero 2 - to my eyes...the XT-2 was a better camera. Especially in the highlights. The center building is all clipping on every camera, except the Xt-2. At the same time the midtowns on Xt-2 seem lower by 1/2 to 1 stop. So maybe the ISOs are not the same between these cameras. But purely on highlights, I would pick the XT-2

  7. Hi, just put it up on Ebay. Kowa 8z, 3D Clamp from Tito, lock ring, front and rear caps. Rear lens has a little scratch, no fungus or cleaning marks. http://www.ebay.de/itm/Kowa-Prominar-8z-anamorphic-cinemascope-lens-with-clamp/132417863185

  8. Just for a bit of fun and banter... what will a mirrorless camera be like in 2023? My predictions.... Sony: "Zombie skin" is finally history in 8k, but the footage on Vimeo still looks like shit because everyone is shooting at 100,00 ISO at "4k" 480fps in underexposed SLOG4. With the M31 LUT. Panasonic: The GH7S becomes an actual religion, because it's the first camera that actually does everything you've ever wanted. On a M43 sensor. Fuji: The X-T5's video is so sharp that it damages your eyes. It does 8k, but only shoots in F-LOG at 6k. 10 bit in 4k. Or something. Olympus: The EM1 - IV is almost out. Did somebody mention the GH7S? Nikon: The time-lapse video mode is spectacular! Canon: The EOS M-whatever full-frame with perfect DPAF. In 8 bit 4:2:0 though. "Only" 4k. No CLOG. Still the best colour. iPhone: Actually becomes to the level of an actual properly serious video camera with very clever, voodoo type computational imagery stuff. It was gonna happen eventually.

  9. Outlawed, probably - except for security cameras and body cameras on robocops. They'll be made by Sony, of course.

  10. Focus isn't the cheap brand, it is the cheap model! SmallHD 502 is 2 times the price of Focus, and a little bit more. Professional monitoring is very expensive, on the studio, or on the field (for some similar, and some different reasons). I have ordered the Focus, because I believe it would be fine for low dSLR/mirrorless jobs for the next couple of years, and the price is right, and seemingly, the size/weight too. More, and different technologies are coming, and other solutions (and resolutions!) will be the norm a few years from now. I am already waiting for a kickstarter thingy that turns mobile phones into monitors (it is on hold at the moment, I hope they will deliver February/before Eastern). New mobile phone SoC and operating systems have better imaging and viewing capabilities, with wider gamuts and super extra sharp OLED and IPS screens, and definitely have the processing power to do what modern monitors do, on a fraction of the cost. I can imagine an S9 will be enough to power and process not only monitoring, but also recording, etc etc If you have access to a shop, go see a couple of those, especially check the size. I always thought that a 7" is a must have, but after I did some very demanding, but with small crew jobs the last couple of years, I am still on the search of a 5" (actually, the perfect for me is 5.5", like my phones!), and Focus is the closest so far. I was considering this for some year, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073FDDDPP/ref=sspa_dk_detail_1?psc=1 what stopped me was the FP batteries, I didn't want another kind of batteries on my workflow!

  13. I say try for yourself. For me a 7" monitor for a dSLR/mirrorless rig is overkill. Even on a smaller C100/FS5/JVC LS300 setup 7" is overkill. If you have a bigger camera/production, then a Feelworld monitor is silly. Imagine Feelworld quality when I did that documentary, when the camera and lenses were more than 100.000euros. I was the one linked the F550/F570 monitors, but just if anyone needs absolutely the minimum, on the other hand, it is just a good (or bad) old Feelworld, on a better chassis. One way or another, cheap monitors will disappoint you. Ask the people here how many Freeworld/Lilliput/Whatnot have on their closets. I am waiting for my Focus, and because, that too, is a cheap monitor will disappoint me in the end, I just believe it will be alright for a couple of years. Monitors are like tripods. In the end, you will pay for them!

  14. Fail. That will hurt their GH5 sales for sure, no way I am getting a GH5, if I was in the market for one, knowing that that will be an announcement on a month exactly. This gives time to other competitors to make - or brake - their own announcements just after Christmass. I guess 2018 it will be the decisive year. Everyone seem to have a competitive mirrorless on the market. Panasonic and Sony are leading the way so far, but this is the last change for Nikon, and one of the last chances for Olympus, then Fuji, and to a lesser degree, Canon. @Cinegain sorry to bring that up, but that APS-C camera exists, and I do have most. It is called Samsung NX1, and except 4K/60p has everything the G9 has and more. Including the battery grip was always less expensive than the G9. oh, and also has this little screen on top that a lot of people made fun of 3 years ago!

    Installing the hack

This is the second part of installation prosess: https://github.com/ottokiksmaler/nx500_nx1_modding/blob/master/video-bitrate-mods/nx-patch/nx-patch.zip Instructions are in the ZIP-file. The hack has the killall button and it is usefull, because using it the other parts of the hack (except bitrates) are not using any prosessing resurces. And after using killall you can't open menu before the battery has been out of the camera ( shut camera and after that battery out for few seconds.) However the Killall function doesn't remain on many days. You have to do it again after day or two. But you start to make it habbit to check, with double clicking the little lcd light button, that if the killall function is still on or not. Not a big deal.

  26. It would be ironic if this new GH5 was a more 'stills' oriented camera with a higher MP count and reduced video capability.

  27. Ummmm.... sorry to rain on your parade.... But... What if on December 15 they just put out a Firmware update??? Sure, there are patents and prototypes out there... But, isn't it a bit stupid of any company to announce anything 10 days before christmas and/or boxing day? I'm thinking of this particular scenario: Our spouses and/or partner may be thinking of buying you a GH5 for christmas.... and then you say.... no no wait for the December 15 announcement.... then you say... I want a GH5S.... then your partner asks.... when is that going to come out? In February/March.... OH.... Spouse/partner buys you a tie or mug for Christmas.

  28. Fuji is rumored to have a video dedicated new camera soon also, maybe Panasonic is rushing things because a 2000$ APS-C camera, with a lot of native lenses (+recently released cheap cine lenses) and IBIS will compete with their GH5 really soon, rather than a double price-full frame camera from Sony. Buy a GH5 and a couple of lenses, or three, for 3000$, that ain't even the body of the Sony, and then you have to spend two times more for a couple of Sony lenses. I do not believe that a new A7s, that will be close to 4000$, will be the main competitor of the GH5. I am not even sure that Sony can implement 10 bit internal on that camera, but we will see. I do not believe that Casey, or Andrew, or me, have to tell Panasonic about their AF. Do you think they do not test other people's cameras? or do not really hear the market? They can't just do everything at once, it is an evolution progress, and Panasonic invested on other things, that their cameras excel (like heat dissipation, continuous video recording, advanced codecs and formats etc). It took almost half a dozen years for Sony to put a bigger battery on their cameras, which wasn't that groundbreaking to start with, that grip was mainly empty anyway. Canon C100mkII is still my most beloved tool, and Samsung NX1 second, an ancient one and a forgotten one. They both do the job 9/10 for me.
