“The Middle Path”: A Lumix GH5s Short

In all honesty, S35 or not, whatever it is, it's going to be (to quote the one-eyed bandit here) "the bee's knees", the snake's hips, the kipper's knickers, the cat's whiskers, the monkey's eyebrows, the dog's bollocks, and so on3 points -
The rumored pricing is the issue and one of the biggest factors in figuring out what may be included in the new GH5. All rumors state $2499... well you’re not getting a S35mm sensor GH5 for that price. It would piss off too many current owners and it would eliminate too many of their m4/3 lenses, unless they have decided to go EF... but that also would piss off current m4/3 lens owners heavily invested in the system. I doubt it’s Raw for some of the same reasons. It’s probably something as simple as full VLog for better DR and a better codec or more efficient codec for the higher bitrate modes. I still think it will be available as a new body for $2499 or a paid firmware upgrade for existing GH5 owners.3 points

The discrepancy most probably comes from the fact that the calculator gives you the distance from the edge of the lens whereas the distances on the lens itself are measured from the sensor. And that was a long lens In my calculations in the previous page from the horizontal field of view , again I see the same thing -> m4/3 sensor.2 points -

To be honest, I was expecting 65mm at the least. In 16 bit RAW, and it can fry eggs.2 points -
You get the same DoF or even less from the 42.5 F1.7 so no.2 points

Could it be an improvement of the video encoding? Zooming in down to the pixels I see very little digital compression artefacts. This would also fall in line with G9's improved JPEG engine. Better compression allows for more grading room, and more smoothness. The highlights look pretty clean too, but as said above that may have been done by a grade or lut desaturating above a certain light level. I'm glad I asked about the tif, at least we got a page of interesting conversation out of it Thank you mr. Neumann for being a good sport and a brilliant teaser2 points

Net Neutrality – For or Against?
leeys and one other reacted to Trek of Joy for a topic
Stupid name - which is part of the problem, but I'm firmly in support of keeping the current rules. The changes are being driven by companies that have monopolies in many communities and are chomping at the bit to charge us more. I've been traveling around the world, we pay more and get less than many countries in Europe and Asia. Same for cell service, there are so many more companies offering service in many places outside of the US. I counted 13 providers in India - all were giving away phones and many were offering 6 months of free service at a fraction of what I pay. How I wish Google Fiber could go nationwide and put a beatdown on the crappy 50Mbps service I pay $100/mo for. The are many issues with the elimination of Net Neutrality, another is the fact that companies like Time Warner or Comcast can charge for access to competitors of their own networks. If you live in a community that's only served by Comcast - which owns NBC - they can upcharge for access to CBS, ABC, Fox and so on. They can charge content providers for access to the network and then charge us for access to the content providers. So we'll pay more to the ISP's and more to the content providers. And there's also an access issue, rising costs are going to impact low income households and rural communities. Ending Net Neutrality will not result in more infrastructure investment since again there is virtually no competition across most of the US. The only places we see significant investments are where there's competition. Cable companies also pay little or nothing for access to taxpayer maintained lands to bury their lines. Then they lobby hard against competitors being granted construction permits to maintain the monopoly. This is a lobbyist driven move so ISP's can squeeze more out of its customers while delivering less. All of the noise is just distraction tactics. The "we're not going to change anything" stuff from ISP's, like AT&T's claims, are just bunk. Prices will spike quickly and there's little anyone can do because there are simply no other options in most places. I don't know what the answer ultimately is - whether its regulation, creating government owned public utilities similar to power and water or something else - but allowing profit driven mega media conglomerates to have a monopoly and the ability to do whatever they want with internet access isn't the solution. Ending Net Neutrality is simply a cash grab by ISP's and nothing else.2 points -

What will a mirrorless camera be like in 2023?
EthanAlexander reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
Just for a bit of fun and banter... what will a mirrorless camera be like in 2023? My predictions.... Sony: "Zombie skin" is finally history in 8k, but the footage on Vimeo still looks like shit because everyone is shooting at 100,00 ISO at "4k" 480fps in underexposed SLOG4. With the M31 LUT. Panasonic: The GH7S becomes an actual religion, because it's the first camera that actually does everything you've ever wanted. On a M43 sensor. Fuji: The X-T5's video is so sharp that it damages your eyes. It does 8k, but only shoots in F-LOG at 6k. 10 bit in 4k. Or something. Olympus: The EM1 - IV is almost out. Did somebody mention the GH7S? Nikon: The time-lapse video mode is spectacular! Canon: The EOS M-whatever full-frame with perfect DPAF. In 8 bit 4:2:0 though. "Only" 4k. No CLOG. Still the best colour. iPhone: Actually becomes to the level of an actual properly serious video camera with very clever, voodoo type computational imagery stuff. It was gonna happen eventually.1 point -
on the other hand: shoulder - the white rolloff is very nice, no clipping. Could it be something as simple as a new log mode? Unless we're talking about literal shoulders: I noticed some darkening around the white shoulders, which on the nikon at least is indicative of using active d-lighting. But seeing as no one has mentioned that, and someone hit the nail on the head, that can't be it.1 point

Looks like excellent dynamic range to me. This is still my vote about this camera.1 point

I had some calculation fun, with @Don Kotlos's excellent male head height figures... Taking into account @Neumann Films picture of the crazy color graded guy from chin to upper forehead ... while knowing that it was filmed 30" away This is what some easy calculations came up with (don't worry bout feet or meter, i just used inches in the calculation): Link to the Calculator Which ... if our guy has an average head ... then this was filmed on a Micro 4/3 sensor, cropped to 16:9 Even if our guy has a BIG BIIIIG head (99th percentile), and even slightly cropped, he barely makes it into open gate 4/3 territory : So i would really rule out any sensor larger than that.... S35 seems completely improbable. Just in case, the calculation for S35 in 16:9 cropped to 4:3(best case scenario) with largest head : Even with Mr. Bighead, we are getting further away from the 30" @Neumann Films mentioned. I'll stick with the 4/3 rumor1 point

Well the lens a Zeiss Master Anamorhic 35 is designed for S35 sensors. So if info about the lens can prove something, it would stand to reason that the sensor is S35. That would be outstanding. The lens is designed to work with S35 cameras.1 point

Righty.... can some mathematical genius help to work this out? 1. The forehead is the subject in focus here ("hit the nail on the head?") 2. The shoulders (there's two of them, "two clues") are obviously out of focus, in perspective they seem to look quite distance away from the face than you'd normally perceive. So how much distance is there normally between your forehead and your shoulders? 3. The 35mm lens is a PL mount, at T1.9 and 30 inches away from the subject. So working out the focal distance of an M43 and S35 sensor based on this info, the numbers provided and the field of view in the image would tell us, what sensor size this is. Another fun guess: Improved low light clues, and now sensor size clues? Are we looking at the EVA1 type sensor, with Dual ISO and an m43 mount? Seems too good to be true..... but then again, anything does.1 point -
Huhh, if you are talking about distances and focal lengths then there must be something about sensor size.. Ahh, Kitty, bring me my smelling salts, this is getting too exciting!1 point

Looking fwd to seeing what's going on here. I'm 99% happy with the GH5. The only other thing I could wish for would be an extra stop of DR.1 point -
I would not be annoyed at all. I would just preorder the new camera and either sell the GH5 or keep it as a B-cam. The reason I would not be annoyed is because I purchased the GH5 fully knowing it was not perfect. I expected to upgrade it. The funny thing is I didn’t want to have to wait 3 years to do so. I have had many Sony cameras and have become accustomed to frequent updates to the model line. Also, I upgrade my phones every 6 months or so. I seldom keep a car for more than 2 years. So for me upgrading is always expected. And frankly, if it is a major upgrade, then the sooner the better. What do you think I would do if the next Sony camera blows away the GH5? Well I can tell you, I will upgrade to the Sony. I am not married to any particular brand/model line. We live in a disposable society. Today’s new is old before it’s even released. The only part of my kit that does not update regularly are my lenses. But lord knows, I do certainly add to that collection regularly :-) I do not understand all the resistance to this camera. DON’T YOU WANT A BETTER CAMERA? I do. I am eager to get my hands on this bad boy. Would you rather have to wait 4-5 years for it? I have to admit, I just don’t understand this resistance.1 point

I’m not sure why a GH5 owner should be pissed off if a new model comes out that uses a S35 sensor? Does not the JVC's GY-LS300 sport a S35 sensor and have a M43 mount? If they can crack this nut, cannot Panasonic?1 point -

Well...based on what I stated and how Luke responded, I'd say this camera with better dynamic range and highlight roll-off is what it is all about. Maybe Raw? This plays big for me personally. I do a combination of wildlife and promotional video work and I have been contemplating a cinema-style camera for better quality footage. (I presently shoot with the GH5 and Canon 1DX Mark II.) My problem is that teaming a 600mm lens with a cinema camera is a lesson in futility. The only cameras that I have considered for this is a RED or Canon camera due to the ergonomics. Now that I have a clue as to what Panasonic may announce, I am more than excited about this new camera. I much prefer a smaller camera body over the cinema style camera for shooting wildlife. I presently use the GH5 with my Canon 600mm lens with a Metabones adapter. It works great and is easy to follow moving subjects such as eagles-in-flight. (I rely on the viewfinder to follow quick moving subjects. Something the EVA-1 sorely does not have nor does my Canon 1DX Mark II and adding a viewfinder makes the combination awkward.) The problem is that it is difficult getting the shot due to so-so highlight rolloff. (Yes, I use V-Log.) A great example of where highlight roll-off comes into play is with Bald Eagles. You really need extra dynamic range and the ability to post-process the footage to bring down the white head and bring up the black feathers. Tough sledding sort-of-speak. I was very close to purchasing the C200, but I will wait now to see what the new camera brings. I am stoked!1 point

i dont shoot anamorphic but to my eye the DOF is not M43. I shoot 35mm lens on a speedbooster all the time, at f2. It looks like this. Several people said it was raw, a few said it was a bigger sensor, but I think only one person said it was the sensor from the eva1 with a 4/3 mount. So that's my guess. And also: this is fun! It's like a whodunnit, but nerdier :D1 point
-
1. huh? they're 95 so are not blown out, correct. 2. I'd say the opposite, that there are pretty heavy shadows from strong lights at a steep enough angle to not get in the eye sockets or direct front. Increases contrast on face makes it look more interesting. Maybe a black board in front of his face to absorb a bit? 3. You didn't number this but the GH5 does not macro block in the whiter shades whatsoever. Trying to repeat it with Vlog on the GH5 is a bit average but I think my HLG version looks the same except without the pretty lens.1 point

Yep, highly recomended. The sale has to do with the frequencies I guess. I am getting the lower end (470-530 something) just in case, but the 566-608 will be sufficient I guess. Better options cost to the thousands per ch. so that is an amazing deal for most people.1 point

The forehead is most in focus, which means, erm..... ....the tonal shifts seem deeper and smoother than regular GH5, but who knows, that could just be better grading. Dual ISO seems the most likely, with RAW a big stretch but fun to consider! I do think it’s a new camera AND a firmware upgrade, with the “new” camera probably receiving something a little extra, like the GH4R did.1 point -
I often see people constantly engaged with their phones and other devices as if their life depends on it, so companies better not make people to mad by throttling their internet or possibly charging different “preference” rates to some just because they may use a competing app, services or often visit certain sites that are in direct competition to the internet service providers own viewership and other similar services or products that they may also provide. Individuals who use exorbitant bandwidth outside of a fairly normal modern day “connected” usage lifestyle, should of course pay more or be subjected to some limit if it is very excessive and they are not willing to pay more based on the current system. Businesses are in the business to make money and hopefully innovate a bit, but need not be everyone’s friend. Most would understand that. However, it has also been discussed that different possible negative methods could be used by ISP’s (especially in regions with little or no competition between providers) and ultimately implemented without some level of Net Neutrality being retained. One can not be sure of course, but for example the possible manipulation an ISP may impose on those only using “partial” subscribed services in an attempt to favor their own services/products over another companies competing product is one area alluded to previously. Imagine an ISP tracking every website and subscribed services you use (Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, Amazon, etc) over their provided/subscribed service connection and then deciding that since you only pay for one of their internet service plans, rather than some bloated reality TV, Internet, Phone package bundle of theirs, they then decide to essentially punish you for it. The large dinosaur media conglomerates merging with IPS’s is just part of that. Without Net Neutrality it would lead to more structured systems of the past and would then probably lead to exorbitant service fees to “entice” you to then pay only slightly less exorbitant fees for their bloated packages/services type of a structured system from days of olde. They could then essentially charge more and also get “their preferred” advertising sponsors/partners to market to you instead of some other platform you may use over their subscribed internet service that one may be using currently. It is not in the best interest of consumers and the ISP industry would just agree on what is most favorable to them and move on. Let’s not pretend they were ever on the side of the consumer. It has always been a shell and numbers game in the industry. Anyone who suggests otherwise is a large shareholder, works for the industry or is a lobbyist… or a politician who just got paid in some form or another. Go ahead, it’s ok to give your middle finger to the “man” every once in a while or at least feel that you still can. It is ok not to always just accept whatever the implied status quo is or something your being told to do as an only option. It is just good practice to questions things sometimes. Continued privacy issues around ISP’s offering up users info to marketers or getting direct ads that can not easily be blocked coming from an ISP directly would probably be expanded as well (unless you subscribe to their other products maybe). I guess router level VPN’s are going to be more popular then. So, don't make the kids mad either or there will be hell to pay… it may not readily happen, but will sooner rather than later if what I have seen in the past is any indication. Oh, and I think that some areas or categories of both the ISP and healthcare industries in the US should be nationalized. All things in these realms are unfortunately very political it would seem. Politics aside, who is then really representing the consumer’s best interest and concerns? Perhaps not perfect, but Net Neutrality is maybe better than the other idea of absolutely nothing.1 point
-
One if the major things that has not been mentioned is that the loss of net neutrality would allow ISP's to throttle the speed to specific sites. So a company like Amazon will pay a premium price to get a high speed but a smaller site will see it's speed reduced when it can't afford to pay off the ISP. They could decide to throttle sites for any number of reasons. Basically the big corporations will have the highest speeds and everyone else will be slowed down. It's a total cash grab and just about everyone here is against it. Surely the ones who are pushing this through are going to rewarded down the line.1 point

So you’re saying the new GH5 will shoot in ProRes... lol. I’m starting to think that the new GH5 will be called the GH5+. It will use the same sensor with a few changes to the body as noted, but the big changes are firmware related. I also think the GH5+ will sell at a higher price point and receive a few bells and whistles more but any current GH5 owners will have access to the FW upgrades via a paid update.1 point

Agreed. And it gets even better with the XT2. On the stills side, I'd say ergonomics easily beat mirrorless competition & even DSLRs. Having dedicated dials for ISO & shutter speed is just great while your eye is on the EVF, add aperture lens control, AF joystick and it's close to perfect. Photography feels so complete and like it should be and not like playing mortal kombat with button combos, nameless wheels, menu diving etc.. On the video side, it's a little bit more work in progress, no touch screen but with the latest firmware the AF is getting really solid. Generally the IQ is quite excellent, color science, best AWB.. a clean sharp 4K image. the film simulations, highlight/shadow settings.. you can get some really great imagery SOOC unlike Sony's. So now a XH1 with IBIS & internal FLOG seems nice but I would need a bit more than that to upgrade. I also don't understand why the XT2 can't get internal FLOG via firmware?? Anyways here is my top list of things i'd like to see addressed aside internal FLOG & IBIS: #1 A no crop APS-C/Super35 4K mode. There is currently a 1.7x crop in XT2 4K. #2 high frame rate (give us at least 120fps 1080p) #3 face/eye detection AF in 4K (currently only works in 1080p) #4 independent stills/video settings (i want my shutter speed to default at 1/50 in video mode)1 point
