Figured I would throw my speculations out there after reading through the thread. I know some people have brought up the idea that the EVA1 sensor may be used in this "new GH5". However, a lot of people (myself included) do not think it makes sense that a modified GH5 (or any GH series camera) would have a larger than m43 sized sensor inside it. But, what if Panasonic ends up doing the same thing RED did with the Raven? RED basically used sensors from the 6K Dragon that did not pass spec over the entire imager - cut them down to 4.5K, and threw them into the Raven. So, rather than "throwing away" sensors that didn't meet QC standards, they cut off the "unusable portions", and put them into a new camera. Basically, they found a way to make money from sensors that couldn't be used! So with that in mind, what if the "new GH5" does indeed contain the EVA1 sensor - but a m43 cut of it? It would explain the hypothetical better DR, colors, and low light. Just a guess. Would be pretty awesome if that was the case. Not holding my breath though.

I had an X5R Osmo for about 6 months. The image was lovely but I had to sell it because: 1. For the workflow you have to go through DJI’s Cinelight. They barely updated it, it’s full of bugs and is very slow. Crashed a lot. Incredible time waster. 2. The SSD would regularly eject itself, or it couldn’t be read on the Osmo. Sometimes it wouldn’t let me play back the files on the app. 3. The app would regularly not connect to the Osmo. The feed breaks up a lot. 4. The footage was sometimes clearly missing DNG frames. So the footage would stutter and jump when viewing after conversion to ProRes. 5. The X5R eats your phone battery, and the Osmo battery. If using the setup regularly, you need to hook the Osmo up to an Inspire battery and your phone to a USB power bank. Certainly negates the portability. 6. The stabilisation isn’t great. It behaves nothing like other single handed gimbals and is very prone to up / down and side to side movement. There are much better options for the money. The X5R Osmo comes across as a mashed together experiment which doesn’t work well enough for regular use. Image is lovely though.

Heard, yes. Sidenote, should one be looking for squared/circular fixed value ND filters... I'd say Breakthrough Photography now.

Yeah, I love ML but the forum isn’t the most friendly of places... or organized. You should definitely test it with one of the new, nightly builds. Full disclosure, I thought you were referring to LiveView while recording, not for playback. Stupidly, I trust my shots and haven’t tested playback, but I am pretty certain it works fine.

You righteous soul! Thank you:) You can get lost in all the forums on ML raw, lol. We're shooting a short this winter and I have a 5D3 with ML raw at disposal. It would be pointless though if I couldn't watch what I just shot

@Germy1979 oh yeah, full continuous 14bit 1080p at 24p is completely stable with clean, color liveview. Once installed, on an SD card, recording with a 1066x CF works like any camera on the market... except you get Raw video and every other goody that ML included. 60p is also possible at a lesser resolution but I don’t think it’s continuous at 14bit. With the new Lite modes, you can supposedly record it in 10 or 12bit though. But I haven’t tried the Lite modes yet. If you can handle a choppy liveview, you can record continuous Lite Raw in crop mode at 3.5K. Is it simply a new Vlog which is 5 times better than the original...and will cost 500€/$? A free red sticker to be included in the purchase? This is terrible! Having to wait until 2018 means xmas has been ruined! Panasonic, quit f**king around. Bring back the original release date!

I have one, and while the weight is similar to a glidecam + camera you don't need to have the arm brace because you can hold it in both hands, or swap hands, or just shift the weight around so it doesn't hurt your arms. That said, you still need to be disciplined and manage operator fatigue -- I tend to brace the bottom of the gimbal on my hip between shots to take the weight off my arms and I put it down at every possible opportunity.

Has anyone ever used the X5R with the Osmo handle? Most footage online is drone footage. But last night a friend of mine showed me some DJI Osmo footage and I went searching and found this video. In the comment section, the creator said it was shot entirely with the X5R, but I’m pretty sure that some of the end footage was older stuff shot in ML Raw. But either way, the opening is insane... I was blown away... Now I know the X5R has been out a while now and it has its issues and that the X7R is on the horizon with a S35mm sensor, but for the money and the ability to use fairly inexpensive M4/3 lenses, the X5R is pretty intriguing. Since I’m not really into drones it was never on my radar but with the Osmo handle, this could be an amazing tool. Any info from some users would be appreciated.

Dunno. I have never used it. But I'll say personally I always use a wired boom myself. Although on very rare occasions when I've had a boom op under me then I've handed them a RodeLink Newshooter Kit to use with their boom.

All the Sigma MFT lenses, and most of the Veydra MFT lenses. Plus others. I look forward to a $1300 GH5! :-D (also look forward to a GH5 for a tenth of that! :-o Which will happen one day..... after all the GH1 is now that price) Could just be a MFT/4K crop of the EVA1 5.7K sensor. That is what I'm betting/hoping on. So nothing revolutionary. Yet.... They did it because: a) internal turf war between the consumer and the pro divisions, so the pro division didn't want to do anything which makes sense for their competitors in the consumer division b) they did a survey of buggy riders and found out they wanted better buggies! (not cars.... because who could possibly dream of something as crazy as that?!?!) Did this happen online? If so I'd love if you could look it up to link to it! Would be interested to see the original source. Ah I see. You didn't use "prove", like people would usually use in a sentence like that.

Ha crazy times, glad I didnt pay 20000€ last year for one I am sticking with the ursa mini pro for a while. Mainly grip(gimbal/glidecam) for me is the problem with the Alexa, as with the ursa mini pro it is not. And the Alexa mini's are still hella expensive. But I found this video online, seems the ump is still best bang for buck.

@jonpais it sounds like you have a well thought out plan. But I still question the need for the easy rig and a matte box for what you’re working on now? If your hands are shakey, a video monopod with IBIS would cure that and be a little less conspicuous... or even IBIS and the strap method would surely be enough? Obviously, shoot as you wish, just addressing why you may be having some issues shooting in some places... but I guess you don’t need me to tell you that. I keep picturing that BTS shot of Luke on top of the car handholding the GH5+ (or whatever it’s called) with that monstrous anamorphic lens. The Veydras are smaller than that lens, right?

Hey John, AVCHD has 50i to 25p and 24mpbs, MP4 has 25p and 20mpbs. So first one has higher bitrate and second one higher resolution, if I figured that right. I would go with the true 1080p and MP4, as it has 20mpbs for twice the resolution in the y axis than the AVCHD 1080i is providing.

Is it possible @Neumann Films Shot this with a lens designed for S35, because it is an S35 sensor. I’ll post some diagrams to prove my point below.

@DBounce it’s not about resistance, it’s about common sense... Panasonic is not going to release a S35mm version of the GH5, this soon, for only $500 more. A GH5 with all of the improvements you mentioned is a 4 thousand dollar camera. Manufacturers can only low ball pricing so much... unless Panasonic is throwing a Hail Mary because their consumer camera division isn’t doing well. I highly doubt that is happening.

I think it might be a misstep for Panasonic to create the three separate lines in this manner. To me it screams being a reactionary move instead of well-thought marketing strategy. Say this new camera will be a heavily video-centric model, the G9 is the heavily photo-centric one, and the GH5 is the hybrid. The problem is that throughout its marketing cycle, the GH5 was presented as a video camera first and foremost, with some talk about the stills features. Remember, the first tease of info about the camera was solely video based: 10 bit 4:2:, 4K60p, and 1080p180. Even the in-person interviews with Matt Frazier and Sean were so heavily leaning on video that stills were barely even brought up. If Panasonic had this 3 camera plan all along, the reps surely would have emphasized the *hybrid* designation more (even if they weren't going to announce other cameras for some months). It seems disrespectful to consumers of the GH5 for Panasonic to release a substantial updated model so shortly after release. Especially, if this was on their roadmap all along. This would be unlike Panasonic. Therefore I think a likely scenario is an updated model with a few new bells and whistles, but with the bulk of features coming from software. Panasonic will offer these software upgrades to GH5 owners at a cost ~$500. Less megapixels is certainly not the only way to increase ISO performance. The GH5 is substantially better than the GH1 in low light and it has far more megapixels. Processing power, heat dissipation, and other factors also have a role in ISO performance. The fact that Luke Neumann is posting high resolution anamorphic frame grabs points to the same or a variant of the GH5 sensor.

The rumored pricing is the issue and one of the biggest factors in figuring out what may be included in the new GH5. All rumors state $2499... well you’re not getting a S35mm sensor GH5 for that price. It would piss off too many current owners and it would eliminate too many of their m4/3 lenses, unless they have decided to go EF... but that also would piss off current m4/3 lens owners heavily invested in the system. I doubt it’s Raw for some of the same reasons. It’s probably something as simple as full VLog for better DR and a better codec or more efficient codec for the higher bitrate modes. I still think it will be available as a new body for $2499 or a paid firmware upgrade for existing GH5 owners.

Just had another look at this image, and noticed a couple of preposterous things here too.... 1. What’s with that flight of stairs? They have to be some of the weirdest stairs ever. They look like they’re curved and bent. Plus they look very thin in the way they’re built. Are they fake? (not sure why this is relevant, but just look at them. Closely. Either that or the perspective has created the crappiest stairs ever built.) 2. The feature of red in the photo. The red on the brake lights. The red on Griffon’s shoelaces. The red on the stairs railing. Cryptic clue to the GH5S’s new red kinks? Could of easily been photoshopped to be that way. 3. Erm..... Luke’s face is happy because he’s holding a new GH5 and he likes it.

Dropped by to say thanks to Andrew Reid and everyone on this sub-forum for generously sharing their knowledge ... and add that I think the NX1 is still very relevant in today's market. Here's my story, I was looking for a small and light B Cam for a Red Dragon and decided to spend the last month really getting to know the NX1 because I like how close the out-of-camera images look to the Red. I advocate for not heavily grading DSLR images and trying to get as close to what I can in-camera ... playing to the DSLR's strengths and avoiding its weaknesses, like codec and bit rates. I shot this with the NX1 and a DJI Mavic as a test, all images are ungraded, straight out of camera and through Premiere's and Youtube's compression ... EQUIPMENT USED . Samsung NX1 with Canon EF 35mm and Samsung NX 16-50mm PZ. . Beholder DS1 . DJI Mavic NX1 SETTINGS . Vasile hack 180Mbps . Master Black Level +10 . Gamma DR . Custom Profile R0.90/G0.92/B1.10, Sharpness-10, Contrast-5 . Smartrange on . DIS on PS. I had trouble with focusing but have figured out how to assign peaking to the speed dial now, haha, should help. PPS. the DIS does work well but occasionally does some funky things so I learned that it's important to review the footage carefully.

I actually has a pre-order for this camera cus I really wanted a better stills oriented m43 camera. But since it doesn't come with HLG or rec709 I think I'll pass for now. As a b-cam to my GH5 for videos it doesn't offer enough improvements over the G85. I'll wait and see what the GH5s has to offer or maybe get another GH5 at some point. HLG is just too awesome!

I think Jon looks for different things in a lens than some of us, which is perfectly fine of course. Seems he likes a perfect lens, he has a track record of owning and shooting with some of the best lenses for the system, incl. the Panasonic 12mm f/1.4, 42.5mm f/1.2, Olympus 75mm f/1.8, 25mm f/1.2, Sigma DC DN 30mm f/1.4, Veydra Mini Primes etc, where it's all about resolving power and sharpness, where they are absolutely smashing it, you can't really argue that. It just doesn't seem he 'gets' people that put character first however (which is funny itself because he didn't feel Phil A's footage had any, but okay)... like shooting a 17.5mm f/0.95 wide open or using anything vintage. Takes offence himself when people find a lens to render 'boring', meaning not that he himself has shot something boring, but that the lens has a reliable and clinical look of perfection to it (maybe that is the sort of 'character' he wishes to see, to me that's prefering a vodka over a whiskey, where as well, nothing is wrong to put one over the other, personal preference and all). To that person. Yet you know, it's okay if people aren't on the same page, an opinion is something subjective, there's no one true way... and one should really be accepting of that and letting others do their thing. To me it matters more that someone is having fun shooting and makes great content in terms of mood, composition, 'story telling' however limited applicability perhaps. If you have blinders on and can only tell if someone's work is good by pixelpeeping, then you might be missing the point (but atleast you'd have every pixel). So I personally was able to appreciate said video and post, because it isn't always the main goal to capture something pixel perfect, but to capture something that elicits something beyond that. And Jon's said it before himself... he might've shot and uploaded a video with the white balance, framerate or audiosync off... and never finds anyone in the comments complaining and pointing it out. That's all because they look through the pixel peeping and rather just focus on the essence. If your content is good, it's probably good because of the bigger picture, not just the individual pixel. And even if you don't see it that back with someone else's work the least you could do is give them some constructive feedback... the lowest thing you could do is dismiss what they've done altogether and regard it as someone clowning around (discouraging them to ever post something again). A bit of mutual respect goes a long way.

And as for the 30 vs. 18 megapixels, yeah, I'm sure the 5d4 is more than capable. But, I was waiting for the 5d4 to come out to replace my 5d3 and when I saw the actual specs I said screw that. It wasn't the crop factor, it was the fact they couldn't put 60p 4k in the thing. Most people don't spend three grand on a camera, more for the 5d4. I make a living mainly taking pictures, not video, but, the writing is on the wall, video is the future and if I was going to spend over three grand for a camera, I wanted one that would last for at least three years. So, I bought a used 1dc, no 60 4k, but I can live without that for a couple of years, maybe get a gh5 later in the year if I really need it. Bottom line is Canon didn't really make any money off me this upgrade path and for what it's worth, the 1dc for the price used is a piece of kit that I can see using for more than three years, I'll probably keep it until it dies. Bit of a rant, but hey Canon, for the people who do spend the money on new gear, give us our money's worth!

I personally think FCPX is more advanced and built for the future (compared to PP). It's rather intuitive, but simplified approach is often mistaken by amazing software development. It's an editor that helps you work faster, better and more fluid. There's more time for creativity, rather than battling error messages and slow responses. I don't care less what people edit on, however the negativity usually aimed at FCPX is no longer totally justified. It's come on a long, long way and works brilliantly. Early haters should try again.
