Panasonic seems to be announcing something "BIG" on December 15
PannySVHS and 2 others reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
I would argue that Casey Neistat is one of the Most talented videographers and Editors on You Tube hands down. He is a wiz at what he does, and I don't care what you try to do video wise, it in a sense is copying something he has already done as a YouTuber. He ain't a multi millionaire for no reason!3 points -

The GH3 is my longest standing camera to date. I had it for 3 years, as in that timeframe, I spent my gear budget on lighting. I now have a GH5, preferring this as my professional level A-cam to an FS5 with a Shogun Inferno. I've shot 5-6 music videos on the GH5 now, only 1 has been released. Please note, this video also has some A7S2 and A6500 shots in there.3 points -
I really enjoyed the clarity in Casey's GH5 videos. It really showed the places he visited or lived in in a new light. The colours were good as well I thought. Shame about the swap.2 points

Its funny how a while back lots of people went, "the gh5 rocks, even Casey uses it". Now the same people goes, "he sucks". (Not talking about anybody regular on this forum.)2 points -
Should I buy a Samsung NX1 now May 2017???

Thanks everyone, the 10 bit isn't what's making me upgrade, there's little difference anyway, it's really 14bit and above that you start to see some real difference which will be worthwhile for color grading giving you extra headroom so you don't need to worry too much while shooting if you're exposed correctly or not. it's really high framerate at 4k. even my output is in 1080p, the 4k downsampled to 1080p gives you 4:4:4 pixel sampling which is the highest 1080P you can get. however because it's limited to 25fps, in music videos which is what I do most, it's not great. music videos need quick cuts, and there's only so much you can film, so we always need to slow down the action so we can fill'up time. Clients find me from my previous videos, they like what they see and they expect the same or better. I've never had a client ask what camera you use, because I deal with the artist directly so they have no interest in the technical bits...they just want you to take care of it all and talk the least tech language as possible. This video above, her previous video was made by a production company with Cinema Camera and Jib and all and she paid 5 times more, yet the result was disappointing for her so she came to me after that. (they could only film her in 1 location because the gear is big and bulky to move around, camera movement was limited, no story it had to be shot all same'day) When I work with Agencies, they do ask what Camera and lenses you use, I tell them it's 4K DSLR and give them a link to the videos I make, and tell them if they wish for Cinema Camera, it can be rented but because they're usually on a deadline and small budget they prefer I use mine. I enjoy the limitations and the challenge, it's fun :D here's another one with NX1. note that every interior scene required 2 x 100W LED lights with diffusers.... exteriors no lights just daylight alone2 points -

Cheers - I do put a lot of effort into the "look", whether that's grading, lighting, composition. The cameras were tough to match, and to my eye are still not spot on. GH5 favours green whereas the A7SII is yellow, and the A6500 blue. They behave so differently, with each camera at a different white balance to compensate for their differences. Well, we had the astonishing feat of filming TWO performance videos with this band in a different location in just 7 hours. So I had to ask both the behind the scenes shooter and photographer to shoot both a B and C cam! Worked out. Honestly, I don't think there's an excuse now for ignoring your lighting gear when you have companies like Aputure and Blind Spot Gear knocking down walls. 99% of cameras will now do the job - keep your bodies and invest in the paint instead. I've not really followed Casey, however I can already see a lot of people outside of EOSHD forums basing their camera decisions around his. I don't think it matters too - a camera is there to be an extension of your own creativity. Everyone's purpose is different. Also thanks for the kind words - I honestly think I can do a lot better and kick myself for it often. I might even V-log myself this next year, taking viewers through a fun ride of the general day and force myself to be thinking beyond my own creative plateau.1 point -

Panasonic seems to be announcing something "BIG" on December 15
jonpais reacted to Fritz Pierre for a topic
Sorry to go back on topic here...Panasonic's big announcement is not another version of the GH5, and if it has something to do with the GH5, at all, it's probably a version of Vlog closer to the Varicam and EVA but of course, to match the DR of the GH5..and to those worried about whether the GH5 can deliver cinematic footage (is this even fucking English), do not buy a GH5...it is a complicated camera and in spite of the price, a professional tool...you will not be happy with it!1 point -

I didn't mention Casey changing system (again) because he's a YT-er or whatever (I already mentioned that the YT crowd has their reasons to stick to Canon). The bit that's interesting is rumor sites keep using that one screenshot of him supposedly using the new GH variation, but that apparently using the new camera swung him back to Canon rather than being more excited about what Panasonic is doing in this space. Can we use this to tell us something about the new camera? One of the more interesting things is the fact he mentions DR being one of the reasons (which I was under the impression was greatly improved now on that new camera). So either... the new GH variation is more hardcore than expected, like a true cinema camera, with a more demanding post-processing workflow, or he just found it underwhelming in general? It's all just a bit off. Maybe it's just a play. Maybe the DR and depth of field will be great and then he'll reveal he's been shooting on the GH5s all along. xD1 point

In one sense, yes who cares what camera Casey Neistat uses, camera choice comes down to preference based on a multitude of variables. If he ditched the GH5, he did it for his reasons, it doesn’t make the GH5 any less of a camera and it doesn’t make him wrong for ditching it... everybody has different needs... and if AF and an easy color solution is high on that list, Casey made a smart move going back to Canon... for his needs. Honestly, the GH5 was a weird choice of camera for him to begin with.1 point

Buy HD content now or wait for 4K?
IronFilm reacted to UncleBobsPhotography for a topic
In my opinion, owning physical movies is a waste of space and money. The format will be outdated the next time I want to watch it, and it's faster to find it online than to prepare my pop-corn anyway. I might be slightly biased since I haven't owned a DVD player (or a Bluray player) the last 14 years.1 point -
Sony A7R III announced with 4K HDR
kidzrevil reacted to Don Kotlos for a topic
Yep, and most generated content is not even stylized that much to require extremely flat profiles. And in most cases with 8bit compressed codecs (or even many 10bit), you will get better results by getting natural colors in camera, and then using rec709 LUTs in post for stylization. The problem with the Sonys is that the default profiles (without the PP) are really only usable with daylight. At least for me, PP are NECESSARY to get the colors where I need to in any lighting condition. The control of the color with PP is so amazing that I find hard to use any camera that doesn't have them. Even a non-Sony. What all companies should implement is baking in LUTs both in video and in stills. Computationally it is trivial (they already do that), and it would add a tremendous amount of color control without the need of bandwidth-heavy codecs.1 point -

haa! thats so funny. i love that show. mulder would be so happy with all the ufo news right now the irony is that ultimately the HD release of the x-files needs a fair amount of work in my eyes: as you may know they didnt have a bunch of the original 35mm footage for establishing shots, and also some effects shots, so they stick out like a sore thumb in SD. i mean they look really ridiculous. and they redid all the type (had to), but somehow managed to oddly change the famous typewriter font. wtf. i could remake that font in like a few days. So lame!!! ive heard that too lol. im no expert but imo film scans can get too sharp. the film grain is perfectly noticeable in a lot of xfiles scenes in 1080p, itll just be sharper grain in 4k dont get me wrong, id scan it in 4k, work in 4k for sure, but i dont think youre loosing much with an HD output is what im sayin. but i have to laugh bc in this case id welcome a 4k xfiles re-re-release so they could fix those goddam missing shots ?1 point -
How to export to Prores in Adobe Premiere Pro CC for windows ?
deezid reacted to Don Kotlos for a topic
Everyone would be better off in the future if they just use Cineform. When someone asks for Prores delivery, tell them that Cineform is better. If they insist tell them that they should be paying extra for the mac ecosystem, because at the end of the day it is costing you more money. Now it is open source. https://gopro.com/news/gopro-open-sources-the-cineform-codec https://gopro.github.io/cineform-sdk/ I am a mac user, but please stop using proprietary codecs. Especially the ones that don't work across platforms by design like Prores.1 point -
The "YT Culture" side of things has sh*t quality on average (but arguably that *works in their favor*, as it makes their videos feel "more real") but knows what buttons to press to reel people in and then to subscribe1 point

Agreed, but if you know the quirks of that particular focusing peaking, and you don't set your DoF too shallow, then focus peaking can be a very usable asset. However generally I find the likes of say SmallHD is doing better focus peaking on their monitors than some of the camera manufacturers are. The Olympus 15mm f8 body cap lens? It is rather "heavy" at 22gms (about 0.78 oz), but maybe you might manage to get away with it? Oh weight (wait?), we're forgetting the extra weight of the MicroSD card, that might tip it over the edge! lol SLR Magic lenses are quite heavy, not a bad thing though, as it gives them a nice solid construction feeling! :-) But not the ideal choice if you want EXTREME lightweight. B&H says the weight is 3.88 oz (110 g). https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1322738-REG/slr_magic_slr8m4_8mm_f_4_lens.html?sts=pi1 point

Sony A7R III announced with 4K HDR
kidzrevil reacted to Matthew Hartman for a topic
Sounds like an excellent plan you have there. I'm looking at a few options myself, trying to wrap my head around anamorphic right now. I think ultimately I'm just trying to up my game and maximize the output if the tools I already have, while weighing out pros and cons of going various directions. I might be taking on too much at once and just need to cool my jets and scale back. Of course, regardless of whatever direction I go in it's going to punch me in my wallet as anything relating to filmmaking is expensive. I should probably switch my information channels as ingest a lot of gear review channels and it just makes me thirst for shit I can't really afford right now. I always had a knack for getting more out of less and I probably just need to return to that and not worry so much about keeping up with the Jones. Thank you for your voice of reason, it's been helpful.1 point -

Smooth WiFi touch-screen focus pulls! From your phone, connected by WiFi to the Z, you can pre-select and store two focus points (A and B), then go between the points with no focusing delay or glitches. The stored points are focus pre-sets, not where you are asking the camera to try to focus. The focusing occurs at a chosen point first (by touching the phone screen), then the point is stored. So, you get smooth transitions, touching A then B and back and so on, as seen in this test video. This uses the Lumix 25mm F1.7 lens.1 point

Damn Marty, this looks amazing... great find. I can’t believe this is 720p from the GH1. Do you know if it was shot from a hacked GH1? I am surprised more people don’t shoot in black and white... I really think the 4 luma values takes footage from low end cameras to a higher level and instantly makes them look more cinematic. I’d love to see some B&W from the G6, if you get a chance.1 point

@Jonesy Jones for me it depends on the content... like if im thinking about getting the x-files, originally shot on 35mm, on bluray, then that 1080p is great, and idk how much a 4k scan of that film would be beneficial at all, at least to that show. that grid of 1920x1080 pixels is plenty of space to reproduce the film scans and have them look awesome however if i wanted to buy something that originated in 4k, then id totally want a 4k disc or whatever ^^^^^^ i watched mary poppins in hd the other night it was frickin amaaazing1 point

He got fired from Pana ambassador program after he leaked the GH5S lol. I cannot believe GH5s is only a vlog update. Wait, wait. Remember @Neumann Films video's title "the best vlog ever" .... What a surprise. Casey wants a good AF. He spoke about that in this video and all the time before. So that tells me 95% sure GH5s won't change AF anyway.1 point

Cheap 100mm bowl tripod legs?
Kisaha reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
Benro for the money is hard to beat for sort of a off brand. I can't tell you how many cheap heads and legs I have bought and ALL of them were shit. Pay the money for a name brand, used one, and be F ing done with it!!! And I think the Carbon Fiber ones are a waste of money for video unless you are doing ENG work. Save your money. Actually the extra weight is a plus for video.1 point -
Does anyone shoot in B&W?
Thomas Hill reacted to PannySVHS for a topic
@mercer, now this one looks massive. I had audio turned off and was uberly impressed and exited about the image and its gestalt. Then I turned audio on and was still exited about the image itself, just not about the audio, so I turned it off again:) But there is an awesome photographic quality to these images. Though I am usually not falling for the shallow dof. But this one would make me want to buy a GH1, it´s in 720p mode too and looking better than most stuff I´ve seen from other shooter/camera combos. This video would even make put it on my channel as my own. Theft as a sign of appreciation should be all right, wouldn´t it?1 point -
