  1. GH5 at a friend's wedding. A little bit of grain, vignetting, lens blur and digital diffusion... plus a colour treatment based on my experiments with matching colour and contrast with Ektar 100 film.

  3. My short documentary The Cloud of Unknowing, shot on 5D3 Magic Lantern, has been nominated for "Best British / Irish Short Film" by the London Film Critics' Circle. The awards ceremony is on January 28th... so fingers crossed for that! Here is a short extract from the film with some info about it: And here are some more details on the award nomination. http://www.iftn.ie/news/?act1=record&only=1&aid=73&rid=4291381&tpl=archnews&force=1 Thanks Magic Lantern!

  4. I agree with Thomas's conclusions : "Anyway, I'll continue to do some more testing, but to be honest, I’m not sure I would use the X-Pro 2 for video. There are just too many limitations in my opinion. Apart from not being able to adjust the picture profile, there’s also the really frustrating issue of not being able to switch between the EVF and the screen when recording. The sharpness is too high for my tastes too. If you’re shooting in controlled conditions the dynamic range is probably not going to be an issue, but outside, it limits what you can do, to an extent. It’s all well and good having all the different picture profiles, but in any situation with any kind of scene with a dynamic environment, most will be too contrasty to be usable without sacrificing highlights or shadows. At the end of the day though, much of this is subjective, and I’m sure there will be people who vigorously disagree with me, but that’s ok. If it works for you, that’s great. If you’re on the fence about buying a new X-Pro 2 and are considering it for video, don’t. If you want to stick with Fuji, the X-T2 will still be a better option as you can adjust the picture profiles and sharpness. Otherwise, the Panasonic GH5 or Sony a6500 are much better options at the moment if you want 4k. "

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

"GH5 V-Log and Hybid Log-Gamma are transformed to precisely match the color science of the Alexa, without compromise." "The GH Alex conversion completely transforms the GH5 image, addressing every nuance of color reproduction (from shadows to highlights, low saturation to high saturation, for every possible hue). This includes an organic rolloff which fully eliminates channel clipping." EmotiveColor.com PDF YouTube

  6. I used to buy blu rays for the movies I wanted in the highest quality, but the convenience of digital (iTunes) outweighs that now. I can tell a difference in picture quality, but after watching for 5 minutes I forget about it and get into the movie. I recommend buying iTunes now because they are automatically upgrading HD to 4K HDR as it becomes available - for free! I bought a 4K Apple TV and my movies look fantastic now. I can barely tell a difference between them and the few 4K HDR blu rays I have. The ONLY exceptions are Christopher Nolan movies, which display the full 16x9 IMAX sequences on blu ray, but stay at 2.35:1 on iTunes. I don't get why, especially since Tron Legacy switches between the two aspect ratios on iTunes. TLDR: Buy iTunes movies for the free 4K HDR and convenience of the cloud.

Yey, just scored a very cheap Canon 35mm f1.8 LTM (Leica M39 screw mount). Will give it a go on Leica M8, Fuji X-T20 and Sony A7. Maybe the Panasonic GM1 as well if I can find the adapter. That is all for now.

  8. Man It is pretty scary how far video stuff has come. But the basics are all the same. Even the same type of equipment needed I guess. Trouble is not much of it in this day and age is worth watching on TV. When the average person only had a 17' to 19" TV didn't really matter if it was only 480 lines anyways LoL. I never noticed any difference until Beta and S Video came out. That was like 550 lines I guess? But a lot of older TVs would not even show it. Only Mitsubishi and Sony TV's seemed to have enough oomph to use it! Panasonic was pushing big time at TV stations to go to S Video. But most all had Sony Beta stuff, was a damn hard sell LoL. I had a Nikon Camcorder and a Mitsubishi VCR, both S Video that I paid a fortune for at home. Everyone that came over was amazed how good it looked on the TV. Exciting times back them between video and computers coming out better and better each year. My pocketbook started shrinking big time when I got into buying old Broadcast TV stuff from the station LoL. Man my wife was a saint LoL. I loved that stuff. I still love the look of 3 tube cameras. Ikegami cameras were my favorite!

Thanks Jon. I have been enjoying the 16 for casual photos but it is a bit big, so your vouch bodes well for saving it for video. It is certainly an improvement over my PL15mm, I just haven't been sure about the weight difference yet. I rock the Sigma 60mm f2.8 and am so happy with it that I dont think I need the better 75mm. Took a stupid amount of photos with the 60 today, as always. It gets great scores on DXO and has good DOF, plus it feels as good to me as the 1.4 Sigmas. At 3m away the f2.8 DOF is 20mm so it seems like the 75mm at f1.8 would usually be too thin DOF (for me).

Interesting stuff Jon. I would like to see your top 5 M43 lenses in order, or best of '17. Curious to see how all my M43 Sigma's stack up (probably mainly because I haven't had enough time with the Sigma 16 yet with it being Xmas.) Ignore the idots who feel the need to shit on other's equipment because it doesn't fit in with their blinkered view of what M43 should be. And the 4Kaphobes (not idiots). Festive greetings

  13. ^^^Agreed, being able to make image adjustments in cam makes a big difference with the xt2, which still has a better image than Sony's APS-c cams IMO, its just a little quirky to shoot video. We'll see what the XH1 brings in a couple months. I don't get why Fuji added 4k, but left out the ability to adjust sharpness and such, weird.

    G85 my next step?

Well, if you can find a GH4 for the right price, you can’t go wrong with that either... but of course I know what you mean... use what you have and let your creativity move you forward.

  17. Everyone would be better off in the future if they just use Cineform. When someone asks for Prores delivery, tell them that Cineform is better. If they insist tell them that they should be paying extra for the mac ecosystem, because at the end of the day it is costing you more money. Now it is open source. https://gopro.com/news/gopro-open-sources-the-cineform-codec https://gopro.github.io/cineform-sdk/ I am a mac user, but please stop using proprietary codecs. Especially the ones that don't work across platforms by design like Prores.

    Z Camera E1 for $200

I wanted to get one but in the end, without focus peaking... it wasn’t worth the price to me.

    Travel Video

Pretty nice video made using a DJI Mavic Drone. You younger guys need to go do this kind of stuff before you get married ,have kids, and get tied down. I have be almost all around the world, but for those that haven't you are missing some incredible stuff the world has to offer. You will be old before you know it and you ain't hiking the Alps trust me.

  20. @mercer, now this one looks massive. I had audio turned off and was uberly impressed and exited about the image and its gestalt. Then I turned audio on and was still exited about the image itself, just not about the audio, so I turned it off again:) But there is an awesome photographic quality to these images. Though I am usually not falling for the shallow dof. But this one would make me want to buy a GH1, it´s in 720p mode too and looking better than most stuff I´ve seen from other shooter/camera combos. This video would even make put it on my channel as my own. Theft as a sign of appreciation should be all right, wouldn´t it?

  21. I work around devs all day long and for a long time in my career as a UX Designer. Where there is a will there is a way. But brininging a dev to the will part is uniquely challenging to that personality type. Many, many devs will say, "No, it can't be done". But in my experience the true translation is all too often, "No, I can't or dont want to do it, but maybe another dev can". You know the best way to fix that problem? Throw $$ at it and watch how all these "impossible" things suddenly become possible. Personally, I think it can be done and the internal processor is pretty powerful to boot. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those features were in the backlog and going to be rolled out in time. And I think that would have been enabled in the HDMI clean out channel because SD cards are just too slow. I think the biggest issue will be heat dissipation. The existing hardware structure could be limited and never built to handle extreme overclocking, and if thats the case there's a huge chance that people will be cooking their cameras in no time.

  22. You can enable the highlight warning separately in the display custom settings, then it works in video mode too. But unfortunately you are correct about the RGB histogram, there is no way to show that in video mode. I few weeks ago made a video about F-Log, you might find it helpful: As you can see you can live without F-Log, and it's not without problems. I guess you would run into even more problems if it was recorded in-camera with 100Mbps H.264.

I luuuuv primes. Ain't gonna apologize for it. Dudes running around with zooms end up with stuff that look like it was shot by dudes running around with zooms. Too many focal lengths in a production; don't find that at all flattering. Fine for some fast-work stuff, but my personal efforts are always done on primes.
