Buy HD content now or wait for 4K?
UncleBobsPhotography and one other reacted to EthanAlexander for a topic
I used to buy blu rays for the movies I wanted in the highest quality, but the convenience of digital (iTunes) outweighs that now. I can tell a difference in picture quality, but after watching for 5 minutes I forget about it and get into the movie. I recommend buying iTunes now because they are automatically upgrading HD to 4K HDR as it becomes available - for free! I bought a 4K Apple TV and my movies look fantastic now. I can barely tell a difference between them and the few 4K HDR blu rays I have. The ONLY exceptions are Christopher Nolan movies, which display the full 16x9 IMAX sequences on blu ray, but stay at 2.35:1 on iTunes. I don't get why, especially since Tron Legacy switches between the two aspect ratios on iTunes. TLDR: Buy iTunes movies for the free 4K HDR and convenience of the cloud.2 points -

Definitely not for RAW which has no assumption of color. He's my cynical view of LUTs. A person looks at some movie, likes the look of the color. Can't figure out how to create it for their footage using Resolve or some other color grading software. So they buy a LUT, which is a "look up table" of color substitutions made by a colorist who can duplicate the look of that film. So what you're buying with a LUT is only another person's opinion of what looks good which matches your opinion. There's no such thing as a LUT that creates better colors, though there's certainly a market for those who believe there are. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Color styles, like everything else in the arts, goes through FADs. Right now, we're in an unsaturated-color FAD with so many people shooting LOG which is a destroyer of rich and vibrant color. However, at some point, the bit-depth of cameras will increase, removing the need for 8-bit LOG gammas, and a FAD in highly saturated images will happen because everyone will want to show off their high-bit footage. There's a prediction for 2020! I need to quit this stuff again for 20181 point

Well I believe there used to be a rule with the MPAA regarding motion picture length, for some reason 70 minutes sticks out in my mind, but I could be off. I believe most festivals consider anything over 45 minutes a feature. And I have seen a few features listed on amazon prime at around 60 minutes. So I guess it really depends on what your goal with the screenplay is? If you’re looking to sell the script to a production company, 50 minutes isn’t long enough and any Hollywood producer would tell you, you aren’t writing a feature or you didn’t tell the story properly. If you’re looking to make your own films from your script, then there are self distribution outlets like Amazon Prime that a 50 minute length is acceptable... but I would try to stay at 60 minutes or more. But this is a very interesting topic that I have been thinking a lot about lately, so thanks for posting it.1 point

I agree! Wow! This is fantastic work. I also like the snippets of color, which, speaking of color, I am blown away by the Fuji colors plus whatever grading you are doing. That's crazy good. Move over Canon and Nikon. Well, Fuji has been in the film business, so it stands to reason they know something about color science. Looking forward to what they come up with for the T-H1 with IBIS.1 point

Does anyone shoot in B&W?
PannySVHS reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
Really interesting that all these B&W films were at 720p and they look great. I think it adds to it more than takes away. Now if these were all in Color I think they all would suffer at 720p. It is nice to know you can use a lesser camera in B&W and still project the feeling you want to achieve. Cheap thrills in a sense. Well done. Food for thought.1 point -
X-Pro2 Ver.4.00 4K video firmware released
Mattias Burling reacted to Trek of Joy for a topic
That's what I dislike the most about shooting video with the XT2 - the need to flip the mode dial switch in order to record video. Its a PITA when you're grabbing stills and video, if you're just shooting video then its less of a hassle. That's why I carried two bodies, one is mostly stills and the other is set for video. Why Fuji has this haphazard approach to controls is puzzling. Its as if a different group of engineers designs each camera without knowing what the others are doing - once body gets a touchscreen, one gets a record button, one gets a wonky ISO dial and so on. We'll see what the XH1 brings, if its really video focused we should see a dedicated record button.1 point -

X-Pro2 Ver.4.00 4K video firmware released
karin reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
One thing I like about the X Pro 2 is you can just stay in stills mode, press a record button to reel off video, without having to switch to a fiddly movie mode on a fiddly dial. The X-T2's mode dial is a nightmare and quite unnecessary.1 point -

Yey, just scored a very cheap Canon 35mm f1.8 LTM (Leica M39 screw mount). Will give it a go on Leica M8, Fuji X-T20 and Sony A7. Maybe the Panasonic GM1 as well if I can find the adapter. That is all for now.1 point -

Man It is pretty scary how far video stuff has come. But the basics are all the same. Even the same type of equipment needed I guess. Trouble is not much of it in this day and age is worth watching on TV. When the average person only had a 17' to 19" TV didn't really matter if it was only 480 lines anyways LoL. I never noticed any difference until Beta and S Video came out. That was like 550 lines I guess? But a lot of older TVs would not even show it. Only Mitsubishi and Sony TV's seemed to have enough oomph to use it! Panasonic was pushing big time at TV stations to go to S Video. But most all had Sony Beta stuff, was a damn hard sell LoL. I had a Nikon Camcorder and a Mitsubishi VCR, both S Video that I paid a fortune for at home. Everyone that came over was amazed how good it looked on the TV. Exciting times back them between video and computers coming out better and better each year. My pocketbook started shrinking big time when I got into buying old Broadcast TV stuff from the station LoL. Man my wife was a saint LoL. I loved that stuff. I still love the look of 3 tube cameras. Ikegami cameras were my favorite!1 point -

Cheap 100mm bowl tripod legs?
webrunner5 reacted to IronFilm for a topic
We have TradeMe in NZ, but the problem is the local market is so extremely tiny it is very very hard to find anything. Almost nothing. Take a look at the current listings: https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/CategoryListings.aspx?sort_order=expiry_desc&mcatpath=electronics-photography%2Fcamera-accessories%2Ftripods&v=gallery&rsqid=c4bfef01f86b420a965a560aa66f5e6e&condition=used&rsqid=6fd012371d6d41619f430f18338dc5b5 There isn't much, heck there isn't even a single 75mm one listed! (which is way way more commonplace than 100mm) I have a Vivten head! Thus the desire to find legs for it....1 point -

Super cool topic, Mercer - thanks for bringing it up! Whenever I went down the Sony path (already twice) I had exactly the same thoughts as you do: just forget about all of this color crap und go B&W. In fact I shot a b&w video several years ago on my beloved GM1, which is one of my own favorites up until today, although it is only 720p. Whenever I watch it, it is able to pull me back into those times as no other shot I have taken...1 point -
YES!!! what a good topic i LOVE b&w photography, thats how i started, shooting 35mm black and white film ive made many b&w darkrooms in closets and bathrooms lol frankly, dealing with color is WAY harder than shooting b&w (so many variables!) – b&w should be really freeing~! i think most ppl will find a HUGE amount of room to play in post, since you can fuck with hues and exposure like crazy to get a cool b&w image. although id love a dedicated b&w camera, having the color data to play with in post can be quite interesting i would love to make a b&w feature! anyway heres a few shots i took the other day that i ~chose~ to treat as b&w bc the color was so meh... much better! *i would recommend listening to the song low desert by r.e.m. while viewing these pics1 point
