“The Middle Path”: A Lumix GH5s Short
Marcio Kabke Pinheiro and 7 others reacted to IronFilm for a topic
Let's ruthlessly dissect and analyze Neumann's first comment of 2018: First of all, let's look into his first sentence, why did he write "Happy New Years" and not the more common "Happy New Year". Or the more grammatical correct "Happy New Year's Day"?! What deeper meaning can we mine from this? & why did he next say "everyone", does this hint at a well rounded GH5s being a camera for "everyone"? Suitable for wedding videographers, news reporters, film students, doco shooters, Bollywood and Hollywood big productions too?8 points -
@Liam i agree with everyone else lol fwiw, heres how things have gone with me lately... i recently got a lot of good feedback in this thread about length regarding a proposed episodic series of short pieces long story short (pun intended), i decided that id be better off with a short film – under 10 min. i figured that i could boil down my ideas into a shorter piece. so i wrote something, 10 pages, and although it came out ok... i just wasnt in love with it. its not me. my original concept was for a horror thing with verrryyy slow shining like pacing, and trying to turn that piece into something much shorter just didnt work for me. i have to borderline love anything i write in order to try to shoot it, and what i had come up with felt cliched, and at the least, something someone else could write but doing all that was really good for me. once i saw things clearly i released my grip on that concept, and then was my paw was open to receive new blessings of filmmaking!!! and somehow all that stuff totally resulted in me coming up with something almost completely different: • its short as can be, like 5 min or less ( = easier) • theres no dialogue ( = omg easy) • theres ~3~ characters instead of like 14 • theres one location instead of many AANND • MOST OF ALL, i like it way better. it feels like something id make, as opposed to something thats kinda forced so, whats the moral of this story, and how does it relate to this thread? i dont know @Liam, i dont know4 points

Then nix the idea and find another script. The easiest and cheapest cost savings can be done during the script writing phase! Such as abandoning it entirely. 40 minutes for a narrative scripted film is smack bang in the middle of no man's land. **OR:** Turn it into a web series, if it can be easily sliced up into fairly self contained chunks. This. Haha! Great quote. It does seem to be a commo flaw of amateurs/students that they take on far to ambitious projects. When a shorter piece would have come out as much more high quality, & with less pain in the process.2 points

medium length films
kaylee and one other reacted to HockeyFan12 for a topic
A few friends of mine got a 25 minute film into SXSW and were able to secure over a million dollars in funding for a subsequent feature from its success. Long shorts aren't necessarily a bad thing... if they're good. As a rule (and festival programmers repeat this to me), 12-60 minute is a no man's land for festival entry and for viability on streaming platforms (for original content). Under ten minutes is the new guideline for shorts, even. That article mentions a few medium-length projects that got into a few unnamed festivals... and yet you have hundreds of traditional format shorts (and features) getting into A-list festivals every year. So the article is at best pointing out the exceptions that prove the rule, and at worst being provocative and misleading. As Sandy McKendrick wrote, ""Student films come in three sizes, too long, much too long, and very much too long." Even if we consider ourselves above student films (I don't), it's true for festival entries, too. Your job, if you want to secure financing, is to leave people wanting to see more. In which case, nothing is worse than something that's too long. ....except something that's not long enough to get the point across in the first place. If you have a story to tell, the story will determine its own length. But a medium-length project will 99% of the time be more challenging to get into a festival or staff pick: http://filmmakermagazine.com/99583-shorter-is-better-sundance-programmer-mike-plante-offers-advice-on-short-film-strategy-at-the-sundance-next-festival/#.WkqNNSOZMlU The self-fulfilling prophecy of the equation is that 20+ minute shorts must be EXCEPTIONAL to get programmed. As a result, they'll stand out not just for increased duration leaving a stronger impression, but also for being the best of the best at a given festival. And if you just want to sell a feature, make a feature and sell it. But that's a separate can of worms...2 points -
Don't ever make something longer that 15 minutes for a short. If your at ~40 minutes expand it to a feature. The last short film I worked on was 27 minutes, the runtime absolutely killed its festival potential. Because the festivals can either pick your film or 2 others. Don't force them to make that choice. This is true though, half hour to an hour is okay if your aiming for TV.2 points

That's called a tree. And everybody knows Global Warming was replaced by Climate Change which was replaced with Climate Disruption which was, itself, formally called "weather." So the GH5s will be weather sealed. That is all. You're welcome.1 point

GH5 to Alexa Conversion
andrgl reacted to austinchimp for a topic
Some quick test frames from home movie footage I got this week using V-Log. First impressions are that it's having a very nice effect. Very natural and the management of the light is very cinematic. I haven't used an Alexa much but have used an Ursa mini 4.6k and Canon C200 a lot, and this kind of reminds me of the Canon Wide DR profile. I just threw a few clips on a timeline and spent a minute or so adjusting each frame so this is pretty much ungraded, just with the daylight LUT. I'm looking forward to editing something together. I recently got hold of a Digital Bolex so I'm into colour and skin tones, and this looks very promising. Lens was a EF Tamron 24-70 f2.8 with Metabones speedbooster. I also used a Tiffen Vari ND.1 point -

A 30-40 minute film is a risk but sure there are exceptions to the rule... so the question becomes... do you think your script and film will be that exception? I guess if you’ve already attempted to tighten the script as much as possible or to lengthen the film by exploring subplots but you’re still passionate about the script, then go for it... who knows. But to address your original comment... if you set out to write a feature and end up with a 30-40 minute script then there is something wrong with the story, or the idea isn’t conducive for a feature. Personally, I think 70-75 minutes is the sweet spot for a no budget, indie film. At 30 minutes, you are kinda in no man’s land... it’s a lot to cut for a short and a lot to pad for a feature. But even at 30 minutes, if you explore a subplot or two and then when you add B-Roll you may be able to push it over 60 minutes if you let your scenes play... but that main story better be damn good... especially your first 10 minutes.1 point

Sony A6500, Panasonic G85 or Fujifilm XT-20?
mercer reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
You need to move to the united States. You are nearly thousand dollars higher than I can get just about anything you mentioned on most all those cameras. I have found 3 1DC's for 2000, I can buy Canon mk 1's with DPAF all day for 1750. BM mini's 2500 all day etc. etc. Craigslist here has thousands and thousands of those kind of cameras here for sale. There are 340 million people that live in the US. Rental houses in LA, NY are dumping these cameras left and right. They are making way for EVA1's and C200"s etc. I don't think any of the above cameras are worse than this new GH5s is going to be unless you Need 4k on the Canon C100, C300 for film making. They all have a hell of a proven track record. There is a lot to be said for cameras that have external controls on them for video compared to Menu Diving all the time. And FF on the Canon DSLR's have their place high on the totem pole.. Shallow DoF is the name of the game in Films. Ain't happening with m4/3, even with a Speed Booster it isn't the same. But we are getting into pretty big money on any of the above by the time you rig one out for the average person. But if you want to take this stuff half serious you have to pay the price. These we dream cameras not many years ago, and now they can be bought with some penny pinching now.1 point -

@Fritz Pierrethank you for the suggestion. I’m debating taking it into the Apple store but as my warranty is expired and the program to fix the gpu under warranty has also expired I’ve read a lot about people with similar machines saying tough luck. I might do this though. I’ll still be keeping this machine as for everyday use it runs fine (minus the random shut downs) it’s just for anything past that it’s not reliable/enough. I realize I could switch to final cut and it would save me money but I rather like adobes suite most of the time. I still edit on a usb3 7200 rpm g drive or my computers 256gb SSD. Something like this might fit the bill. Used versions of these ROG laptops go for 600-800 so a bit more affordable. https://m.newegg.com/products/9SIA24G69V4080 Hell this one even looks like a MacBook! I'd disagree, because all the things that makes a GH4 "better" (such as anamorphic, YAGH, or 10bit external) a budget minded sub $1K buyer is not going to be buying a secondhand GH4 for! Thus that then leaves instead all the things the Panasonic G85 does better instead, which makes it the better buy in the end.1 point

Thing I don't like with the A6300, A6500 is the 1080p sucks ass on them unless you down sample from 4k. Now 4k on a A6500 is about as good as it gets for the money. But I must admit a Nikon D750 with the lenses you have can get the job done also. Pretty colors out of the Nikon. Not the best of the above for video though. But good. There is a dark horse here and that is the New RX10 mk IV. That thing is pretty bad ass for the money and a killer lens is included. And if you are into travel, nature photography or video it is the Machine to have hands down. But a G85 with a good zoom is the cheap ass way to go. I ain't too big on m3/4 anymore but this new GH5s may change that, but that is WAY out of your price range, probably for the money out of most people's on here, that is used C100 mkII, C300 territory, even BM Mini, Canon 1DC, 5D mk IV, Sony A7r mkIII damn near. I know I am forgetting some. It had better be DAMN good.. And the Kicker is if you are Really Really into video is a used Panny GH4. I know the G85 has IBIS and a bit better colors but there is not a damn video camera in the world overall better than a GH4 with all it has to offer Video wise for the money, and if you want to do Anamorphic, well shit to bed, it is the one to buy. There is a Lot of people that have made some damn good money with one and still are.1 point -

It is for life. I will never stop! But then again I have no choice. Why cook three times when once is enough? I started this diet prior to the paleo etc craze catching on. So was quite interesting seeing this rise in popularity for something which I'm already doing. (As paleo and LCHF can be very very similar) Indeed, when people hear the word "diet" they think of it as a short term thing which lasts a few weeks. Maybe a few months. WRONG! It should be much longer than that, a diet is about how you live your life. For me, the decision to do LCHF had 0% to do with weight loss. Although this turned out to be a nice side bonus benefit of the diet. As prior to the diet I was somewhat way overweight at 95kgs (but I am 6' 3"). Then quickly lost weight once on my diet.1 point

I'm not very hopeful about the Canon 7D mark 3 and 90D having 4K either... And, my pessimism towards Canon have been there since the 7D mark 2. And, your arguments for the C line and c100 mark 2/3 are very sound. But... This time, although I might regret saying this... I'm going to bet the farm...that the 7D mark 3 and/or 90D will have 4K. Let's see why: -The 7D has always been dubbed the mini-1DX - atleast since the introduction of the 7D mark 2. If that remains true, and it's missing 4K...??? -XXD side follows suit from the 7D line. You will see that there isn't much difference between the 70D and the 7D mark 2. -I know that they didn't have 4K in the 6D mark 2, but if sensor resolution has something to do with the 4k crop factor... Then the 6D mark 2 would've had better 4K crop than the 5D mark 4 and there would be no point in putting C-log in the 5D mark 4, because most people would still choose the 6D mark 2 for 4k(cheaper, better crop and flip out screen). Which brings me to the rumoured crop on the Canon APS-C... I've been hearing that there is going to be a 1.4 crop on the already 1.6 crop sensor, which means 2.24 crop. (That's worse than the GH5 no?) -If they don't add 4K into their 7D or XXD line now.... They will have to in their next iteration.... Which is 4 years away.... The GH5 is already doing 6K anamorphic.... Weren't most people talking about 8K cameras for 2020 Olympics? https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2016/8/26/12656286/8k-tv-broadcasts-2020-olympics-sony-panasonic Can Canon really wait till 2022 for 4K in their APS-Cs? When 8K is aimed for 2020? As for your dilemma about the c100 mark 2 competing with the 7D mark 3 or 90D. Because of resolution... I feel a price drop coming for both C100 mark 2 and C200. Then you will obviously have to choose between crappy 1080p from the APS-Cs and really bad 4k crop.... Over amazing 1080p sampled from a 4K sensor, xlr inputs, built in nd-filter, etc.1 point

Liam reacted to Thomas Hill for a topic
I had a short script then took that concept and wrote a feature. But I was never quite happy with the feature script, so I did a big re-write and ended up with a script that I and others like a lot. But after all that, you could read the short and the final feature script and not see much evidence that they have anything to do with each other. I haven't really had an issue with ending at a middle length. My shorts range from 3-12 pages. When I'm working on a feature, it never enters my mind that I'm finished short of 80 pages. I usually have plenty of story either in my head or in actual outline form that I know it's feature length before I start writing. I have a mostly two-character road trip feature percolating now. 2018 - The year of the VDSLRs?
webrunner5 reacted to HockeyFan12 for a topic
From what I understand (and this is something I read a portion of one wikipedia article on, so I don't understand much), most so-called "holograms" are either stereoscopic AR (hololens) or a pepper's ghost (Tupac) or at best an implementation of a lenticular display (like the 3DS except with a wide viewing angle and without eye tracking). Lenticular displays divide the resolution in each dimension by a factor of the number of discrete viewing perspectives... so a UHD hologram would become 240X135 if you have a 16X16 display hologram... and that's not even enough perspectives for a decent horizonatal viewing angle. Think Lytro cameras, but in reverse. I think the Lytro cinema camera is 755 megapixels so you'd want something like that to get a cinema-quality hologram, both on the capture and display side... Don't quote me on this but the 7D holograms are likely glorified wide FOV stereoscopic 3D (the whale video is a magic leap promotional video rendering in CGI). It's probably just like those 3D IMAX shows from the past, but updated a bit. Just my guess. And I've heard the Red Helium technology is a four-view lenticular display, possibly with some sort of tabletop viewing tech on top of that that provides the illusion of projection from the screen. (3DS is two-view with eye tracking and must be viewed within a narrow viewing cone.) From what I've heard, there's no really groundbreaking tech there, but it's all in the implementation of course. The iPhone was only groundbreaking to the extent that it worked well. :/ I am excited for the 90D, but the crop will probably kill it.1 point -
I do understand why that's practical, but I can't imagine expanding a 40 minute film to a 90 minute film.. maybe if I'm basically combining a couple middle length ideas. But the latest film I'm working on that got me thinking about the topic again was basically interesting to me as a project at the moment because it was a more substantial film than I had done before but only requires 2 actors and 1 location. I could combine a company piece that's also somewhat simple, but at the least it would double the work. Expanding scenes of dialogue or adding.. no idea what.. to make it "long enough" would kill me.. maybe I'll see if I can split it into episodes, but that doesn't feel right for this project either. Just rambling. If anyone has lengthened a piece by a lottttt, it could be interesting to hear from them1 point

Tbh, I wouldn't get into the Sony APS-C system either. A bit russian roulette regarding overheating, because some people don't seem to run into it almost at all and others have it constantly. Of course, you now have the tripod mode, where you're raising the threshold where overheat protection kicks in, but rendering it so hot, that you can't comfortably hold it in your hands, hence: tripod mode. Of course it greatly has to do with them deciding to keep the body so damn small, which makes no sense as they've neglected a dedicated APS-C lens line-up for the last several years now, so it's more like an APS-C limited FF entry level to get you warmed up for an A7 or A9 body, already having the FF covering lenses. In the end, the lenses are what makes a system compact, so releasing new cameras that are very compact, but failing to embrace very compact lenses to me is the wrong strategy. Then there's just ergonomics 'n stuff. No frontfacing screen, touchscreen is a rather limited implementation, there's no dual cardslot, no dedicated headphone port, battery life is not that great. Then there's the footage... lots of potential on a purely sensor/pixel performance level, but that rolling shutter... and default profile colors you definitely need to mess about with because else you're getting zombie skintones and color channel clipping. All in all, I just can't be bothered with them unless they change up their approach in this APS-C segment (bigger body... better heat disspation, more features/better interface, new exciting compact lenses native to APS-C). Like, if Sony could give me a Panasonic GH5 or Olympus E-M1 Mark II with APS-C sensor... and a exciting compact lens line up to go with that, I'd be all about that. But... no joy. Maybe 2018? In the APS-C realm, I actually consider Fujifilm to make the most sense now... and they're still quite traditional, have still a bit to go. Atleast they're nice to use. Now they just need a body with sensor stabilization, a frontfacing touchscreen and a dedicated headphone port on the body. My money's still in the MFT basket. You just can't beat the compact factor and value you're getting. It just means you can't be relying on super smooth C-AF and you need to really think about your shots as lowlight and dynamic range challenges you. But, that's all stuff that you can actually make work. Except for the DR, this is as close as you'll get to shooting with an actual cinema camera. With a BMD, RED, ARRI etc, you're not relying on lowlight and C-AF either. So it also kind of depends what kind of shooter you are of course. Of course the GH5 packs a punch, but I'd consider the Lumix G9 as well if you're into a lot of viewfinder work and stills (I guess that's what the Nikon was used for partly as well). Shorter clips only, but still impressive. Supposedly the processing is quite nice and gets raving reviews. Both the GH5 and G9 are quite sizeable bodies though, mind you, so with going compact, it isn't so much about the bodies, but the lens advantage there. But I always say: a camera wouldn't get made, if they didn't think anyone would buy it. And everyone has different needs/wants/budgets, so really it's up to you to figure out. If you have friends or a rental place, see if you can get your hands on 'em. Or just at the camera store alone. That will probably tell you more than comparing specs on paper.1 point

Now i have a clamp, from VidAtlantic, but im interested in upgrade to Redstan, i´ve seen that redstan have a custom Clamp for the little brother of my lens, the 8/19 1.5x, And im asking myself if he has one custom clamp for my lens. Someone can give me the contact of Redstan? I hope that you enjoy the video! If someone have a question about the lens, ask me! PD: I already knows that i suck writing in english, sorry!1 point
