  1. This video proves that GH5 "S" is not only a low light camera, but a lowlight sea MONSTER. It also works underwater, as the scene gives us obvious clues to this feature. Also the use of boats suggest that it will be shipping soon.

Well, if you'd have read what it said 'w/ tiffen pearlescent filter', you'd know. https://tiffen.com/diffusion/ I think filters like these (and e.g. Smoque 1 or Ultra Contrast (low) 1 & 3) are underrated, more people should give that kinda thing a go.

  4. Wasn't digging. I just put in 'Fashion film GH5', lol. But I get what you mean. - Best stuff might've come from folks that happen to be on EOSHD as well. Luke Neumann and Albert Fast too. Guess that's something we can be proud of as a community.

  5. Yes, the native GH2 color (with Smooth -2 and Flomo 2) is better than the GH5s native color. I will never sell my GH2, just because of its significance to me. Maybe I will do a GH5 > GH2 conversion for a bit of fun & nostalgia haha

  6. Here's a good one from 2016. I haven't done any reading on the making of it to find out exactly why they chose b&w but I think it suits the story very well:

  8. Any good documentary maker would likely keep on filming too. Many war corespondents will of course tell tales of exactly the same situation, where they couldn't put the camera down but had to pick it up to capture the story even under horrible circumstances (often quite the reverse, as the more horrible it is, the more important it is they report on it!). Now of course Logan Paul isn't a doco maker, he is a "YouTuber". But in a way, that is kinda sort of the "same thing"? As a vlogger he is making a mini documentary, every single day. Look on the upside perhaps? He is bringing more attention to Japan's terribly high suicide rates, maybe will do his tiny part in helping open a discussion to do something about it. Oh, and as for censorship, I don't believe in any of that. "We don't have free speech to talk about the weather".

  10. I'm finding with the NX1 that you have to use different settings for different scenes. When I used to set my settings to just one setup, it didn't work for everything. Casey's settings work really well when you're shooting in a controlled studio with plenty of lighting. So he sets his master black level to 0 because in that environment you dont have to pull up your darks that much or at all. You control shadows with actual lighting. But in darker or more unpredictable lighting situations, (run and gun) I really have to crank up the master blacks levels to get any latitude in the shadows. I usually set that between +6-10. I never go pass +10 as a rule of thumb because when you adjust black levels down in Premiere/Lumentri you get a lot of banding and artifacts. It's pretty bad actually. You have to work with this camera for a bit to discover it's weaknesses. Good image out of the box, but not very malleable. We're fortunate that Samsung's color science is generally good. I've seen some amazing results from this camera and I've seen some absolutely horrible results too. I believe the key is sutble grading and good controlled lighting that doesn't push extreme contrast values in the scene. Even low output practical lighting will blow out really quickly, which is a hallmark of limited DR. And if you underexpose to combat this, and try to lift the image in post you run the risk of bringing out the noise in the shadows. I'm sure Samsung would have addressed some of these issues with firmware updates that made better use of the amazing 6.5k, 14bit, 28.8MP sensor. But they left dishonorably and now we're stuck with what we have. I think the best we could hope for is a hacker comes along and lifts a lot of current restrictions on the clean out HDMI channel, so we can get more out of this sensor through an external recorder.

  12. And the approach to the whole "being a filmmaker" has changed since the GH2, not for all but for a lot of people. It feels like the majority of people who bought the GH2 with video in mind spent more time learning about the image and the tools to grade it than the majority of GH5 buyers do today. As a result Youtube is filled with GH5 stuff that looks meh. Lets say you're 14 year old. You want to become a star like them other big Youtubers. But your concentration span is about as long as it takes for a Tesla to reach 60mph. What would you rather watch? "Learn the basics of cinematography - 10 parts, 1 hour each" or "INSTANT FILM LOOK IN 1 MINUTE, AMAZING RESULTS, EASY PEASY, JUST BUY THESE LUTS" Nothing wrong in using LUTs, or auto features of a camera. But things have changed, just saying.

  13. Hey guys, great posts in this thread. One thing, I actually DID put the shooter in the center of my piece, just in an overly calm way of wording. My own words from my original post: "With the GH5 a whole new crowd of videofans are doing their short seqences of slowmotion and IBIS demonstration..." Oh, how I love to cite myself:) @Sage nice lensing and framing and great color out of your GH2. I like your emotion 2 montage, links into some great GH5 color moments here, awesome montage as well. I do think that too, that GH2 with the right lens choices and profile and WB has really nice color. One thing, GH2 shooters always lead me to the most interesting material of pure camerawork: framing, lensing, color contrast- palette- and composition, composition of objects, subject/object choice, camera movement and speed and point of view and distance, lighting. That is so to say what the GH5 lacks the most, this kind of library. By the way, maybe a bit unexpected, a guess the camera game. I suggest without browsing his materail for an easy solution. I expect @mercer to fall for some temptation of purchase again:)

  14. instagram suck as a way to judge image quality. I want to say it looks good, but that might just be wishful thinking. I would be happy with clean 6400 ISO. If this can indeed do clean 12800, I would be more than happy... which actually sounds like a dangerous medical condition

This has been covered A LOT in here, thanks to kidzrevil, but yeah, they are incredible for transforming footage and making it more cinematic. Wanted to quickly ask if anyone here had a chance to check out the new Sony 24-105mm yet? I am fed up of the Canon 24-105 w/ the Metabones adapter on the Sony A7SII. Would love to go native, drop a little size and weight and from what I've heard it's a pretty great lens, if pricey. Will still use primes when I can leave my camera bag at hand, but I've missed an all purpose travel lens that works without any problems.

  16. Yea, the Gh2 native color is definitely better, *especially under tungsten. With the dynamic range, bit-depth, and resolving power of the GH5, the potential is akin to a cinema cam. The color is a malleable 'chameleon' Thanks Mercer, they are both hacked Gh2, though Dani was only with my own slow motion patch, otherwise unhacked. Indeed, Victim is a more carefully done muted cinema approach to color and light, while E2 has the rougher pop-inspired, unlit approach of its predecessor. With GHa (and what's next), I'm going to do a narrative in the muted cinema style. It will be something to see ; )

  17. I don’t know... I wonder if someone shot the same exact footage with a hacked GH2 and with a GH5, how the results would be. I almost think we may be surprised by how well the GH2 footage holds up and with the right operator, like Seb Farges or James Miller, the GH2 footage may be superior in certain aspects. These look really good. Are they both hacked GH2? I particularly like Victim... of course the first scene seems unnecessary... but that’s neither here nor there. And in some ways, I like the look of Victim more than I like Emotion II... but that looks great too... really nice work all around!!!

  19. I must play my tiresome part here Of course a lot of GH2 footage, from years ago, looks better. It's before the mass over-use of V-LOG gamma profiles that kill color tonality. That said, the GH5 4K in a standard, or very gentle LOG gamma, is a sweet image indeed!

  21. On Creative Cow, someone has found that indeed in a 2020 project the Color Wheels work properly (and really well), whereas in 709 they are a mess. Best advice would be: stay away from the wheels if you are grading for rec_709! Nobody knows what happens when in the next update this gets fixed. You very probably lose all your rec_709 CC for existing projects ...

  23. Yes, Don, you're right. It's just funny that everybody raves about the long-awaited wheels without noticing that they offer less than the iMovie-ish Colorboard. Or without admitting it. I asked Mark Spencer in the comments to his Ripple Training, and he answered: "All color adjustments are iterative." Maybe over time we all realize the ingeniousness of those wheels, because getting it right in many time-consuming increments is possibly the most precise way to do it. This reminds me of a children's book of mine, in which two guys want to share a sausage. The smarter guy says, it's not exactly half, let me bite off the difference. In the end, of course, he has consumed the whole sausage.

Brings back some good memories though, he was a sweet dog. He was a Chic magnet in the College town for my son I lived in when he walked him lol. Women loved to hug him! The Dog that is. A friend of mine had one and it's name was Billy BoB. Fits them to a tee LoL. Nice looking B&W you have there.

  26. I think what we see with the GH5 et al is the result of a lack of intent when shooting. The shoot now and use all the bells and whistles the camera has, and then worry about putting it all together into something coherent at the computer later on.

  28. Algorithms are neither good nor bad they just are. Just don't watch the videos and they won't show up in your feed. "Modern culture is corrupting our children" is an argument as old as time. Also, I find it hard to believe that 2/3 of people browse the web without adblocking. Block ads and they don't make money. It's as simple as that and far better than traditional interrupt advertisement. If you like them then whitelist them. uBlock is just common sense. You can't control other people but it isn't really that hard to control what you or your children watch.

  29. This all shows how detached people have become (often them pesky youngsters) on how much power the internet can yield and bite you in the ass when you get cocky. Dipshit kids will always exist - we actually need them, we all make mistakes and often learn valuable life lessons from young age and hopefully grow up to be better people. But when you have millions of followers that you know are mostly young and possibly impressionable, there should at least be a moral obligation to think about what you are putting out there for the kiddies to see. I think apologising afterwards because of the ‘backlash’ is a bit too late...it is often clear that the tears in the eyes are really caused by fear of their channel and revenue being cut off, not genuine remorse. Earning revenue from your apology video is a bit of a giveaway...that at least should be donated to a suicide prevention charity. YouTube should be held accountable up to a point (morally and sometimes legally), but the largest responsibility should rest on the shoulders of the content makers themselves. Imagine what wonderful content could exist if those who created were not purely infected with the monetary incentive of ‘likes’ and ‘subscribes’ and paid for promotion bullshit. Putting cultural value or gauging fame on the amount of likes or subscribers someone has is like telling me how many people in the world ordered a Big Mac in one day...impressive stats if you want to represent McDonald’s at a fast food conference, but otherwise pointless. If you want to stop Gorden Ramsey spitting your lamb cutlets back in your face after you prepared a meal for him, you don’t cook up some frozen substandard shit that the masses seem to accept. You make something of worth and quality to impress...or don’t bother - and appeal to the suckers who can’t taste the difference. Perhaps I’ve only seen crappy YouTube ‘stars’...they just all appear to be like self serving arrogant cocks who remind me exactly of the people I would not invite to my yacht for afternoon tea and scones. YouTube stars ain’t ‘my bag’ so needless to say I have no cultural value associated with them at all...so this recent news sadly has no shock value for me, other than feel sorry for the video-bombed dead guy and his grieving family. It now seems that other YouTube stars are now condemning this guys actions...behold, the moral authority have spoken! We are truly living inside an episode of Black Mirror. Disclaimer: I’ve never seen anything I’d class as entertainment on YouTube, other than Red Letter Media videos and the occasional live streaming from a house full of cats. The only positive reminder from this whole debacle, no matter how much you care (or not) - is to post on your social media feed the number of your local suicide helpline/ Mental health outreach programme and share it with friends. There is a very good chance it will reach someone you care about and remind them that help is out there.

  32. Obviously, the GH2 has a little bit of a head start but yes, there seems to be a different level of filmmaking that occurred 4-5 years ago compared to today. I think it’s a combination of beliefs and methods that forced people to be creative with what they had, the limitations created aesthetic opportunities, but these limitations also kept the membership much smaller... Now with the advancements, a lot more people have decided to give it a try. On eBay alone I have seen about 6 GH5s up for sale in the past month where the seller said they bought it because they decided they wanted to make music videos or short films but have since moved on to other interests. When the tech becomes more important than the content, there will be an influx of mediocrity. With that being said, I have seen a ton of nice GH5 work, but I’ve also seen a ton of nice t2i work and with all of the tech and visual enhancements of new cameras, I cannot say that the GH5 videos are better than the t2i or the GH1 videos I’ve seen. Hell, look at Kendy Ty... his films have gotten worse since he moved on from the t2i. Other’s films have gotten better. Interesting post.

  33. The most efficient way for me to adjust the contrast has always been manipulating the luma curve directly, and that is now supported by FCPX so I am happy I could never get used to the lift-gamma-gain. Too much work for a simple thing.

  34. @mercer oh btw i meant to mention, as you know i had an rx10ii (briefly lol), but i like your idea with it, and tbh that was my thought too: shoot something in black and white with it. id shoot in slog, and if you want easiness in post a contrast lut and a little fine tuning should be fine. i graded some of that footage to b&w and got good results ?? edit: whoops i just read your last post ?

  37. Some quick test frames from home movie footage I got this week using V-Log. First impressions are that it's having a very nice effect. Very natural and the management of the light is very cinematic. I haven't used an Alexa much but have used an Ursa mini 4.6k and Canon C200 a lot, and this kind of reminds me of the Canon Wide DR profile. I just threw a few clips on a timeline and spent a minute or so adjusting each frame so this is pretty much ungraded, just with the daylight LUT. I'm looking forward to editing something together. I recently got hold of a Digital Bolex so I'm into colour and skin tones, and this looks very promising. Lens was a EF Tamron 24-70 f2.8 with Metabones speedbooster. I also used a Tiffen Vari ND.

    medium length films

A 30-40 minute film is a risk but sure there are exceptions to the rule... so the question becomes... do you think your script and film will be that exception? I guess if you’ve already attempted to tighten the script as much as possible or to lengthen the film by exploring subplots but you’re still passionate about the script, then go for it... who knows. But to address your original comment... if you set out to write a feature and end up with a 30-40 minute script then there is something wrong with the story, or the idea isn’t conducive for a feature. Personally, I think 70-75 minutes is the sweet spot for a no budget, indie film. At 30 minutes, you are kinda in no man’s land... it’s a lot to cut for a short and a lot to pad for a feature. But even at 30 minutes, if you explore a subplot or two and then when you add B-Roll you may be able to push it over 60 minutes if you let your scenes play... but that main story better be damn good... especially your first 10 minutes.

  41. Blu-ray all the way for me. I've made DCP's and quality exports for work, and I seem to be able to spot compression a mile away. I've always wished that there was an option in Netflix to load ahead on a video. Any time the compression crops up it yanks me out of the film and I have to pause to let it buffer. Prefer the perfect presentation to Blu-ray, and yes I've started buying UHD. I'm always chasing a higher quality image.

Thanks Jon. I have been enjoying the 16 for casual photos but it is a bit big, so your vouch bodes well for saving it for video. It is certainly an improvement over my PL15mm, I just haven't been sure about the weight difference yet. I rock the Sigma 60mm f2.8 and am so happy with it that I dont think I need the better 75mm. Took a stupid amount of photos with the 60 today, as always. It gets great scores on DXO and has good DOF, plus it feels as good to me as the 1.4 Sigmas. At 3m away the f2.8 DOF is 20mm so it seems like the 75mm at f1.8 would usually be too thin DOF (for me).
