“The Middle Path”: A Lumix GH5s Short
Emanuel and 4 others reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
This video proves that GH5 "S" is not only a low light camera, but a lowlight sea MONSTER. It also works underwater, as the scene gives us obvious clues to this feature. Also the use of boats suggest that it will be shipping soon.5 points -
Been trying out this conversion for the past few of days. I've only had the GH5 for a few months but I really am enjoying the color response and the highlight rolloff of this profile. I used the LogC conversion LUT, LogC to Rec709 and some temperature adjustments on this one. I've got the original V-Log to LogC frame below. I have not had the pleasure of using an Alexa but your conversion gives the GH5 a better starting point for grading in my opinion. Great work!3 points

Does anyone shoot in B&W?
TrueIndigo and one other reacted to mercer for a topic
Thanks Marty, but I’m really just a writer who wants to film some of my own material. I definitely don’t have the confidence, or desire really, or time for that matter, to film someone else’s work. My goal is to be a competent enough operator, editor, and colorist that my films don’t look completely like amateur backyard films, while still keeping the spirit and DIY aspect of the run and gun filmmaking I grew up working on. Are you thinking, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure... oh wait that wasn’t in Black & White... lol. Pi? Nice samples, the GX80/85 is a great camera for B&W. L.Monochrome really has a film look to it like it was designed. Any video samples?2 points -
Agreed. Beh-bye GH5, hello G9 and GH5S (one dedicated to stills & travel video, one dedicated for studio style shooting). - btw, I was one to mention 'no IBIS' recently and a bit of a while ago already as well, if it's aiming at doing what I think it will (a proper all-in-one handheld compact pretty hardcore cinema camera (DR/Codec/etc), which traditionally means no IBIS; traditionally also means: no lowlight (ISO409600 type, not even anything over ISO6400) monster & C-AF you won't be relying on), also, helps to keep people (additionally?) going for the regular GH5 with the advanced video features that does have IBIS. Still though. You can shoot like a proper cinema camera and get that thick gradable footage out of it (nothing a vlogger would be looking forward to). Amazing for well set up and thought through shots/scenes. Of course, they're expecting you to work with rigs, gimbals, dollys and sticks. Not so much indeed for your casual inconspicuous aim & grab. 2... or should I say 3 different beasts. If you can live without the GH5's advanced options though, indeed the G9 seems to hit the right spot there.2 points

I like Amos Chapple (http://www.amoschapplephoto.com/) because (1) he shoots cheap, small m4/3 equipment (smaller bodies, some of the consumer glass) and still seems to have great results, (2) his stories are very, very interesting and unusual, (3) he goes places I'd never go, (4) his images seem fresh, much of it is content I've never seen before.2 points -

The simple thing the GH5 does not seem to achieve: the magic of the GH2
webrunner5 reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
Back in the day lots of filmmakers would shoot on older-tech film stocks 'kuz they were cheaper than the less grainy stuff. Or, they used older film stocks because it gave them a look they were going for. Not much different from deciding what sensor to use now-a-days. The thing is, technology advancement blew through the financial barrier about a decade ago. At this point anyone that's deep into wrangling the best IQ out of something...is probably just doing it to wrangle the best IQ out of something. There's literally about a hundred consumer cameras for under 1K that will allow a "Filmmaker" to go out and capture awesome footage. Hell, to support a school's volunteer filmmaking club, I just bought a GH1's for $95 and a Pentax f2.8 prime lens set 18mm, 24mm, and 50mm for $50. A laptop to edit 1080 footage can be had for, what, $250? If that's not the doors wide open, what is? Someone with skill in the craft could make that look not only fine, but exceptional. It will never look AS GOOD as a better camera in a good craftsman's hands, but people don't watch narratives to pick at the technical details. Accomplish the goals of good storytelling with decent cinematography and you're on your way. Love new gear stuff, but there's so much else to concentrate on, just can't get excited about it anymore. One more anecdote: I'm on a film festival committee, one of our selected films was shot on the GH5, another on the Arri. Hand to god, while I can certainly tell the difference, the IQ is such a non-factor it's ridiculous. The lighting in the GH5 film was creative, the Arri film lighting was boring...1 point -
If the new GH5s has a new 12 megapixel sensor then the original will stay very relevant as both a cheaper option but also as a true hybrid.1 point

I follow a photographer on Instagram named Adrian C Murray and his work is just breathtaking... there’s a modern day Norman Rockwell feel to his work, even though the subject matter and mediums are different. I believe he shoots with a Fuji. Also I am a huge fan of Sebastian Kortman, he posts a lot of screengrabs and photos on IG and his compositions and color is gorgeous. And obviously, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention our own Mattias Burling. His IG page is inspiring. Somehow he manages to get hundreds of likes and views in a matter of minutes. My most popular screengrab has 23 likes and it took about 8-10 weeks to get there... LOL...1 point -

I have seen that film in a theater, Tetro" by Francis Ford Coppola. It was really good, but I was not so fond of his different uses of I would assume softer, sharper lens, filters I don't know. In people shots they were soft, on everything else it was really sharp. There was sudden changes of shots, and it just was, well crazy at times. I found it distracting as hell. Seemed like a rookie mistake. Not sure what he was thinking. I know you are suppose to use softer lenses on women in particular, but to have sudden transitions, well not so good.1 point -
In some ways this camera and the G9 seem to make the GH5 somewhat irrelevant. The G9 shoots video well enough for most situations... it is superior for stills, and, is likely the best of the bunch for travel. AF is much improved over the GH5. Color science is said to be the best ever from Panasonic. While the GH5s is rumored to be the best choice for dedicated video, with usable lowlight performance for improved indoor usage. It seem likely that the new camera will also sport improved AF. For all its bells and whistles, I think these two cameras, in many ways overshadow the GH5. Relegating it to a more evenly balanced, but also more compromised hybrid use case.1 point

EVA1 versus FS7, FS5
EthanAlexander reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
Cheaper, hell it cost More than a FS5, and only a grand less than a FS7! I think it is going to be as big a dud as the AF100! A good camera, but not a notable one. And the GH5 with it's crap AF, and I would argue a even worse OOC look is going to go down as not so hot either. Panasonic better have this new GH5s the best thing since sliced bread or I think their goose is cooked on higher end cameras. Even the Varicam 35 isn't selling like they hoped. Right now Panasonic does not have one camera I would buy new over the competition.1 point -

Its a solid grade starting point; simply a matter of how much/where to add contrast, and whether to add a color cast. For me, Arri's 709 in general starts with a little too much contrast for wide DR shots, and a bit anemic saturation. With static starting points, it is an interesting question as to which 'one-size' palette will be ideal1 point -

“The Middle Path”: A Lumix GH5s Short
IronFilm reacted to Trek of Joy for a topic
But what we don't know are exact sales numbers, which those in the industry do know. We're at a time where all the hybrids released in the last couple years are very capable cameras - you really can't buy a bad camera from anyone. And the market has been in a freefall since the peak of 2010 - though it seem to be flattening out as mirrorless grows - for now. So now manufacturers are chasing niche's like slower bodies that shoot high MP, speed and video. Panasonic has been all over the map lately, outside of the GH line, the naming and categories each camera fills seem to change with each model. Olympus is #1 in mirrorless, the Em1.2 seems to be very popular, the g9 is competing with it on the speed side, something the GH5 doesn't do. The GH5 is still a better camera for video shooters. Nice to have choices. The GH5s makes a lot of sense - people have been asking for a video camera in a stills body for years. I prefer the camera for factor to a larger video body, and I'm sure many others do as well. I believe Canon would do very well with a c1/2/300 in a the 6d2 body, but like Sony with the gimped a7s, they're so protective of the cinema cams it'll never happen. Hopefully the GH5s is a huge success and other follow. The biggest complaints with the GH's seem to be AF and noise at higher ISO's. I don't shoot m43 and I'm certainly interested if its cleaner at higher ISO's. AF is a wash since Panasonic is stuck in DFD mode, but like the a7s it'll probably be better in low light.1 point -
Yes, one of the biggest advantages here is that those without VLog can effectively get it for free. Also, those with both can experiment with both formats on the same project with full confidence that they can match them perfectly in post. They both store the full dynamic range of the sensor, HLG more linearly than VLog (which curves shadow noise). HLG uses a bit more bit depth, because VLog L is conformed to the Full VLog curve for workflow compatibility with full VLog. Because the color spaces are different, the resulting native color is different, and I find the native color of VLog to be a bit better than the native color of HLG (for skintones especially). With color correctives, such as Leeming or Driftwood, the color of either can be significantly improved.1 point

GH5 to Alexa Conversion
JeremyDulac reacted to Sage for a topic
That looks really good @jsmorris_, What do you think of Soft? It is something of a dream starting point for me, as compared to Arri's 709. I took a minute to dial in the grade on top of the EC Soft component applied to your LogC shot, attached are the shifts I made to LGG and the color wheels: For our purpose, I recommend V-Log. The conversion to Alexa space is more direct via the VLog route, which minimizes translation error. Technically, HLG uses a bit more bit depth and stores shadows linearly, but in practice they are both effective storage formats for the core sensor data and will get you to the same place (extremes of range preserved).1 point -

This is how I imagine Panasonic's consumer department has been conversing: Enlightened Panny consumer bod: This GH4 is great - but it's a video-centric camera, and it's only real weakness is low-light situations. Let's fix that for the GH5. Panny corporation: Sounds good, How do we do that? Enlightened Panny: Well, we lower the pixel count and... Cautious Panny consumer bod: Woah, hold on there! Yes, the GH series is video-centric, but this is still a consumer unit. We absolutely need to appeal to stills buyers as well, and they want to see more not less megapixels. Corporation: Hmmm... tough one! Well I can't give you both what you want. Or can I? How about we split the range - a hybrid camera for the masses, a stills oriented version, and a super video oriented version. Panny Professional division bod: Woah, hold on there! I couldn't help overhearing. Just how super video orientated are we talking here? I don't know if any of you read our memos at all? You know - about the EVA - the big super charged video camera we're going to be launching right after your launch window! You sure you're not gonna be cannibalising our sales? Corporation: Hmmm... I see where you're coming from. Okay - let's stagger the whole thing. We do the GH5 as normal, and the stills version; then we give the EVA a bit of room to breathe; and then we do the video version after that. Might have to delay a bit so as not to piss off the GH5 purchasers too much. Agreed? All: Agreed!1 point

EVA1 versus FS7, FS5
EthanAlexander reacted to IronFilm for a topic
TC, 4K 30p 10bit internal, 4K 60fps, I reckon gives the EVA1 a clear edge. But sure, if E mount or variable ND is more important to your particular needs then the FS5 is right for you! And yeah, I wish the EVA1 had used a mirrorless mount (Panasonic has made many cameras with one after all!). Even more important than eND. EVA1 is already surprisingly small and lightweight, I wouldn't consider this a major factor vs the FS5 (vs the FS7 however? Yup). But it is also big and awkward then with an external recorder. If I wanted cheaper 4K raw in a big and awkward form factor I'd go with an FS700! ;-) :-P (it is quite tempting still....) Agreed, I'm of the view 8bit and slog3 shouldn't mix. Arguably the FS5 "copied" the C100 body! ;-) I don't think anyone really "copied" the other, they just made sensible design choices for a small camera like this. Oh, and plastic = lighter (& cheaper). A good choice for this kind of camera.1 point -
Anyone Used Nikon Picture Control Utility for Video Profiles?
Mattias Burling reacted to Michael1 for a topic
I saw a post on another forum where someone was lamenting the fact that there was no way to setup custom video profiles that could be uploaded to the camera to bake in prior to video compression in camera, rather than trying to push whatever the camera generates in post. I happen to be checking out the Nikon Picture Control Utility software program, a free utility that can be downloaded from the Nikon website, and saw where you can create your own custom tone curves. Not only that, you can add control points to pull the curve around in an infinite number of shapes, and even save the curves for use later. I don't see why you couldn't create a log curve with this utility if you wanted. You can change other parameters, too, such as saturation, hue, brightness, contrast, clarity, sharpness, etc. You can modify existing profiles, such as Flat which is often used for video for grading. You can save these, and import them into the camera as custom profiles. You tell you camera to use your custom profile, and you are ready to go. After checking it out, it appears like this is exactly what the other forum member was looking for. Here is the help manual if anyone wants to look at it. Nikon Picture Control Utility 2 Help Manual Seems like a pretty awesome utility that may even be more useful for video than stills since we don't have RAW output for video. Has anyone used this?1 point -

And the approach to the whole "being a filmmaker" has changed since the GH2, not for all but for a lot of people. It feels like the majority of people who bought the GH2 with video in mind spent more time learning about the image and the tools to grade it than the majority of GH5 buyers do today. As a result Youtube is filled with GH5 stuff that looks meh. Lets say you're 14 year old. You want to become a star like them other big Youtubers. But your concentration span is about as long as it takes for a Tesla to reach 60mph. What would you rather watch? "Learn the basics of cinematography - 10 parts, 1 hour each" or "INSTANT FILM LOOK IN 1 MINUTE, AMAZING RESULTS, EASY PEASY, JUST BUY THESE LUTS" Nothing wrong in using LUTs, or auto features of a camera. But things have changed, just saying.1 point

On Creative Cow, someone has found that indeed in a 2020 project the Color Wheels work properly (and really well), whereas in 709 they are a mess. Best advice would be: stay away from the wheels if you are grading for rec_709! Nobody knows what happens when in the next update this gets fixed. GH 4 versus G85 for 4K video
kidzrevil reacted to Raafi Rivero for a topic
I haven't tested the G85 but have tested the GX85. IBIS is the killer feature the two cameras share, but the GH4 still has a couple features that make it a good choice, depending on what you're planning to shoot. Advantages of the GH4: - 10-bit signal via HDMI at 4k, if you plan to use an external recorder this is still a killer feature. The GH4 is the only camera < $7k that offers this. - VLog - if you plan to shoot cine-style or for color correction, this gives you more dynamic range and grading options - slow motion - GH4 offers up to 96fps in 1080 setting Really it comes down to how much or whether you plan on shooting handheld. If you're downconverting everything to 1080, then technically you can get a 10-bit image out of the G85, too. With a shoulder rig or something similar you should be able to get great handheld shots without stabilized lenses, you're just committing to carrying around more gear.1 point
