I don’t know about the headline feature, but it seems the headline will be... “No IBIS... What is Panasonic thinking?” I think the article will begin... “With an industry first, Panasonic has not included a feature to protect the sales of their lower end camera...”3 points

It is sunset even. Maybe by announcing this during our night of the 8th they are telling us the camera will have AMAZING LOWLIGHT? Better lowlight even helps "big" budget productions. They can shoot faster with less. I've seen this first hand with a Varicam LT shoot. Here, watch William Wages ASC talk about how it is a game changer with lighting for him:3 points

Panasonic To Announce GH5 Variant In January
wolf33d and one other reacted to Dimitris Stasinos for a topic
Once you get used to IBIS there is no turning back... The majority of GH5's users have already invested in expensive adaptors and fast glass, a combo where IBIS becomes a "must". It would be a pain in the @ss to manual focus a 1 kg glass while shooting handheld with no IBIS.2 points -
For me doing hand held with the excellent Sigma 18-35mm really needs IBIS, and AF improvements looks minor (too early to tell, but still). I will probably pass on the GH5s, but will be interesting to see how much the image quality is improved. I applaud Panasonic for all the improvements they have done, pushing the competition especially on features, framerates, codecs etc. BUT i "fear" Sony will realease the A7S III, with "barely" good enough codec and framerates, still it will (likely) have superior AF and IBIS. And that might be the tipping point for many, including me. Will be interesting to see..2 points

Consistent exposure for run-and-gun shooting
freeman and one other reacted to austinchimp for a topic
No easy answer to this really. In the pressurised, high speed run & gun situation I use the histogram or waveform, and zebras, and with experience you should get better at getting exposure relatively consistent. I also shoot with everything on manual, usually setting my desired aperture and shutter speed and then constantly riding a vari ND to keep exposure under control. Shooting log also helps as you can adjust a lot of exposure issues in post and rescue many shots. Largely though it's just experience and getting used to what your camera works best with, and knowing your controls so you can do it all fast and intuitively.2 points -
@IronFilm @Orangenz The announcement starts 10 am in Las Vegas, that's 11 hours away. Until then, keep calm and wish that they didn't take away the IBIS2 points
-
There's one reason: to double the battery life. IBIS is a massive power hog. It's kind of ironic that the ultra low light performer (if that's what this camera is) that one would therefore think of as a 'run and gun' camera, may not have IBIS, and the one that's going to be relegated to controlled lighting situations for those with access to this one will have it.2 points

I hate to agree with such a dire prediction, but in many ways I do. YouTube is one problem... 24 hour news is a problem, too. Whichever side you're on politically, I think most of us can agree that the dynamics between the current administration and the media are broken and hurtful and cruel. (And worse, weirdly addictive.) The internet is one of the most significant and empowering technological innovations in the history of civilization (imo). The best metaphor for technology that I know of is the Prometheus myth; now, things are moving so fast that we can really see the world burning. But at the same time there is less famine and disease and suffering than there has ever been. Bad YouTube videos don't bother me much because there's also good stuff. What bothers me more are the comments and bullying. I never really watched much reality tv, or a lot of popular sitcoms, but I still like tv a lot. YouTube is fine. I do wish it were easier for niche content creators to see similar returns to the big guys, though. Maybe that will happen later. The current landscape bothers me a bit, but it's not causing me to freak out. Same shit. Different sandwich. What does bother me is the Neo-tribal and feudal discourse that the internet for whatever reason (anonymity? lack of empathy?) promotes. What also bothers me is the addictive nature of it (and of loot boxes and social media apps that are modeled after gambling). I think we can get past this, but real name forums don't seem much better (RedUser is a pretty tribal place still) and I'm not sure VR will help or hurt–it has the potential to do both. It's more a question, as always, of how we respond. The scariest part is when you see online feudalism ingress into the real world. Cyberbullying leading to suicide... Alt-right (and far left) violence fueled by echo chambers on reddit and 4chan... ISIS recruitment... etc. YouTube comments come to life. As a whole, humans are a resilient species. We'll adapt to change, take responsibility, repent, and collectively sacrifice ourselves, even sacrifice our civil liberties, whatever it takes for the greater good. The question to me now is the cost of it all, the cost of fast innovation and the difficulty we're having adapting to it. I don't want to see a nuclear war started over a twitter fight. Maybe it's selfish of me–maybe the result of that would be lasting world peace, much as Americans stopped fighting Americans after the Civil War and WWII brought a global economy and political fraternity that up until now was working well. Good still won, despite the cost. But to me, personally, perhaps selfishly, I don't want to see nuclear war at any cost. I suspect humanity on an evolutionary level has a need for a tribal identity that will always divide us, and I think that now that we have the ability to destroy ourselves we have to address that at a deeper level–perhaps by transcending violence and feudalism, perhaps even by transcending capitalism some day (not for a while, I think capitalism is the best thing we've currently got). As technology empowers us more and more, as a species, we need to rise to the occasion. It's the Prometheus myth after all. The same technology that threatens to tear us apart also empowers us to do something to prevent just that. I take some solace in how good humanity's track record has been–despite atrocities along the way–but I also fear that we've reached a breaking point from which we might potentially destroy our species or lose our souls. We need to work less on tech, more on ourselves.2 points -

No wonder why Casey tested it and dropped it for Canon. The guy couldn’t care less about C4K, but no better AF and losing IBIS ? I guess he laughed. Despite DPAF I would never use the 6D2 as he does though. Such a poor image quality. Even on YouTube 1st video he posted with the 6D, I thought something was super wrong and checked the YouTube video resolution because I thought I was 480p.... EVA1 versus FS7, FS5
EthanAlexander reacted to IronFilm for a topic
Again, this is a non-argument which gets repeated over and over again. You can just scale the sensor to match the lens on it, you don't have to shoot full sensor 100% of the time! (but it is about having that choice and flexibility to choose otherwise for some shoots) With electronic lenses you could even automatically detect when a native MFT lens is mounted and scale to match! (with a manual override option of course) Easy. Simple. Done.1 point -
EVA1 versus FS7, FS5
Zak Forsman reacted to IronFilm for a topic
Actually no, there are not plenty of other cameras to choose from! :-/ If a person wants a compact cinema camera with compact lenses, then they're sh*t out of luck! As what options are there? There is the famous BMPCC/BMMCC, but they're awkward/inappropriate if you want XLR inputs or any of a bunch of other common standards such as TC or built in NDs. There is the Digital Bolex, which is absolutely perfect for some people. But for others the base ISO of 200 due to the CCD sensor makes it impossible to use for their purposes (not to mention the lack of many other features such as TC or NDs). There is the Panasonic AF100, which is the EVA1 should have been the update for! But the AF100 is now woefully out of date, so that rules it out. Then you have a few more oddball choices (such as Sony F23, but too outdated for some, and it is a really really big camera! Just to use small lenses on it. Defeats the purpose), but none are appropriate. Imagine how good an EVA1 with the small Panasonic Leica 12-60mm would be, that is beautifully lightweight! And you could pop a 20mm f1.7 pancake in your pocket to pull out when the sun sets. One can hope, perhaps Panasonic will bring out a camera bigger than the GH5 (in price and size) but smaller than the EVA1 (in price and size) but with a MFT cut of its 5.7K sensor.1 point -

EVA1 versus FS7, FS5
webrunner5 reacted to Zak Forsman for a topic
NOTE: This is not a counterpoint to anything you wrote, just using it as a springboard to share my thoughts on the EVA1, as an owner. The image is definitely what's most important to me -- color, skin, DR, highlight roll-off... it's all handled beautifully. I think the perceived shortcomings are being blown out of proportion because none of them have gotten in my way. Bad LCD? I wouldn't shoot 4k with a 3.5" monitor in the first place. The Panasonic LCD stays at home while my SmallHD 502 or 702 take the LCD feed over SDI. EF mount a bad choice? Not for me as every lens set i own (contax-zeiss, leica, sigma) has an EF mount. Bad build quality? Plastic shell, yes. But it has a magnesium alloy frame. I've owned the EVA1 since November 8 (my two month-iversary!) and have shot with it nearly every day. Haven't suffered any build quality issues. No DPAF? I don't happen to shoot the sort of content that I'd risk relying on autofocus for. No EVF? I think built-in EVFs are a pain to use because they're placed at the rear. My Gratical Eye is much more flexible. Noise at higher ISOs? Compare the EVA1's very fine, tight noise character to the splotchy, clumpy noise you see with the Sonys and Canons. Also, the internal noise reduction works well, but even better, the EVA1's noise pattern lifts out beautifully with no perceivable loss of detail. Where I work, a lot of FS5, FS7, & A7SII material comes across my desk to be graded and it's always a bit of a fight for one reason or another. Comparatively, the EVA1 is a joy to grade as you guessed, much like the Varicam. This camera is so easy to work with, and I was so happy after the first month, that I bought the extended 3 year warranty. I'll be shooting with my "baby varicam" for a good while. Truly the only complaint I've got for the EVA1 is that it doesn't offer RAW output or 400mbps encoding yet. Soon, I know. But not soon enough. And one little thing that I really love is that it shoots 2K, not just HD. It is a cinema camera afterall, but most in this class only do 1920x1080. And as I often have my films exhibited in theaters from a DCP, it'll be nice not to have to do a little blow-up to make up for those missing 128 pixels on the side. It's a small thing, but appreciated.1 point -
Sony A6500, Panasonic G85 or Fujifilm XT-20?
Givememypips reacted to Cinegain for a topic
Fuji always has nice color, just, they've never really been into video that much and have only realized highlighting that now as well, so they're a little behind. No sensor stabilization either, whilst the others have implemented that already. Sony usually needs the most tweaking in-camera and in post regarding color and otherwise has those mentioned issues. Panasonic has come quite the way over the years. After the GH4 we've seen the G7 and others that were actually very pleasing, the G9 gets lots of love in the first reviews, but the GH5 is sorta around that level, has better high-end vid features. Would definitely wait for this GH5S announcement tomorrow, though, could be a cinematic beast!1 point -
In my world of quality, Jonathan Pie would have 7 million subscribers and Casey Neistat would have a few hundred thousand. Most viewers have probably stumbled on both of those channels at some point. Most people want to watch a fantasy life, like Neistat. The world seems to be have been that way forever. As @OniBaba said, in Rome the colosseums were built large to accommodate tens of thousands of people who wanted to watch fighting, with the small theaters were barely filled by people who appreciate the well-made play. For those of you who don't know Andrew's countryman, here is one of his more popular recent videos. Pie does them every week I believe. They're all amazing. He has no equal in America, for me. Maybe Jimmy Dore, though Dore is older and goes at a slower pace.1 point

@kidzrevil yes they make all of their lenses in the F Mount... that last one is a Tokina 24-40mm f/2.8 in F mount. Here’s the same lens on the NX500. This was when I would just slap a LUT (multiple) on everything, but you can see how it looks with a 2.5x crop... And finally here is a screengrab with that lens from the D5500... so a S35mm crop. Arri Alexa Mini is da bomb. Music video directed by Dave Altizer
IronFilm reacted to Matthew Hartman for a topic
Definitely. Honestly, with such a cringe worthy and aggressive grade this could have been shot on a DSLR with the same destructive output. If this grade/look was the intention of the production/client, budgeting/using the Alexa Mini for this project was simply overkill. The distribution channel for this is probably Instagram and Facebook which ends up in a super compressed 8bit codec anyway. I've been down the road where I as the DP/cinematographer lose control over final vision of the project and the powers that be take over and just ruin the hell out of it. It really sucks. I feel your pain. The last time this happened to me the edit and grade looked absolutely horrid, I voiced my issues, and then was basically told to go back into my corner. I was so upset I ended up walking away from the project sighting "artistic differences". How I help combat this is I'm also and Editor. I actually approach my cinematography as an Editor and try to get in as package deal. I've also learned that being dipolmatic and having the director sit over my shoulder while I'm cutting sounds good spirited in theory but usually ends up in a situation where I basically become a technician to a backseat editor, rather than a storyteller crafting a story, if that makes sense? I dont find it fruitful. Since narrative filmmaking is my side passion seperate from my day job I can be selective about which clients I work with. I've kept this setup intentional. But I understand not everyone does it this way. Some have to work with what they have because it keeps the lights on. If I come across a client that basically is unwilling to trust me for what I bring to the table I dont bother working with them. Lots of ppl have a story to tell. They can hire someone else or shoot it themselves. No one who has talent or skill should be made to feel like a wrench monkey. On that note, if you find a client or director you have chemistry and a good working relationship with do whatever it takes to nurture that relationship and keep it flowing. This is why you'll often see the same Director/DP/Actor couplings across multiple films. This type of connection doesn't come along easily.1 point -

Petition to keep NX alive!!!
IronFilm reacted to Matthew Hartman for a topic
I'm the guy that launched the petition. I would say at this point the system is obviously toast. I still own and use my NX1 to date. It is still a viable camera, and still as underrated as the day it was released. I've heard from several South Koreans that the transfer in management is what actually killed the previous camera business. Basically, it was a pet project by the much older previous CEO before his nephew took the reigns, and obviously showed us he had no skin in the game. I'm sure it was widely seen as "forward-facing", but in my view it was very premature. We could have had an NX2, maybe even NX3 by now and although it wouldnt have been as profitable as say their appliance and smartphone offerings, it will still bring in a considerable amount of cash and more importantly kick back by reputation to their other products. I'm sure many Samsung employees that worked on the NX system were just as disappointed as it's customers, as it was obvious they were striving for excellence and to cause a stir within the industry. You don't cram all those features (in 2014) into a body when your competition is still shooting muddy 1080p (ahem Canon, Nikon, Sony) if you're not trying to put a stake in the ground. With exception of Mr. Reid, a lot of camera pros were pretty hostile towards Samsung's lineup, and couldn't decide if it loved or hated the camera. The exit gave them more fuel to put down the system, and gave the industry yet another excuse to move at a snail's pace. The NX system was headed towards excellence and household name status. That is what Samsung does. Had it not been for the change of leadership, there's no doubt in my mind that it would have been a leader, if not THE leader and bar for all other manufactures to live up to. I've owned very few Samsung products that were faulty. Some may not like the name or have preconceived ideas about the quality of Asian markets/products (most cameras are Asian born) but at least where Samsung is concerned they are a giant, not just in South Korea, but globally. I'm not sure why the skeptics were so skeptical, but their cynical attitude certainly didn't help matters. What it did do in part was made sure that innovation remains slow and incremental. So thanks. I watch YouTuber's like Tom Antos, Film Riot, Film Courage, Curtis Judd, and many more along this vein. How is it all these channels are acutely aware of the GH4 but have no idea the NX1 line even existed? It never shows up in their gear recommendations past or present, which I believe shows a telling pattern. Tony Northrup, The CameraStoreTV, Matt Granger, Max Yuryev, and Rocket Jump Film School did actually review/use the NX1 and their responses were generally positive. Although the guys at CameraStoreTV were actually more on the fence but they did dedicate two whole segments to the NX1/500, albeit slightly sarcastically. DigitalREVTV did a asinine video review of the NX500 which was basically as one commenter put it, "An 11 minute long bash because it was a Samsung and not Apple". But that Brit is a cynical muppet and Canon/Apple fanboy anyway. But it serves as a good illustration of how many pros received, more like perceived the entire line. What I never understood is how on one hand you could sing the praises of the GH4 and yet dismiss the NX1/500, which in my professional opinion was and still is the better camera of the two. In some regards it wasn't even comparable. The NX system is that anomaly camera/lens that we're not likely to see again anytime soon. If you own any of these products I advise you to hold on to them. Don't worry about the detractors, they most likely never even used the camera. We need to re-petition our hacker community to further investigate opening up the power of the NX1/500, and I would suggest employing them in this effort full stop through crowdsourcing/donation. I would not count on Samsung themselves to resurrect the business or even offer another Firmware update. I and others have done our due diligence on behalf of the NX community in to let Samsung know our love for the NX1 system and our frustration in "their" decision to pull out. I put this petition in front of a handful of Directors, both past and present, using my influence and connections as an ex HTC and Microsoft employee, having worked on projects in cooperation with Samsung. Unfortunately, I'm sorry to say "they" have chosen to broadly ignore our pleas. Employees and shareholders are different beasts, at a certain level it's to be expected. This is how it goes in general. That being said, those that know the beast that is Samsung knows they can be unpredictable at times and pull out a wild card. Translated, I wouldn't hold my breath, and yet I wouldn't count them out in the future either. They will act if they see a value prop for their business and they have the capacity to compete at the drop of the hat on a global scale. I learned one thing in creating this petition. Those that own or have used the NX system absolutely love the hell out of it. You will hardly see a comment (about 928) that expresses a mundane reaction to these products. That truly says something about the quality and innovation of the product AND the gap of this quality and innovation in the market right now. It's awesome and interesting to see people from all over the globe echo this similar sediment. Its a true community.1 point -
Just signed the petition today. Hope we will get firmware update for our much loved NX1 and maybe an NX2. Now it has nearly 16k signs. Whoever didn't yet please sign the petition.1 point

Petition to keep NX alive!!!
IronFilm reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
"It's now 2017 and the NX system is still alive and going strong. In some cases, the NX cameras still offer technology still missing from other manufactures to date. Think about how impressive this is? That's how ahead of the curve you were." Very true! The technology was an incredible achievement. If they wanted to just do an NX2, an update, I am sure they could swing the factories back into action. Problem is, they have to justify the business plan to the Samsung board and CEO, who has his eyes on sales numbering in the millions. I hope Samsung can see the advantage of doing a smaller scale brand prestige project with the NX2, ahead of a full frame camera launch in the future that grabs a big chunk of the market.1 point
