Is tricky to give advice without knowing your budget range, but here are some suggestions I'd give: Varicam LT: arguably "the best" camera right now (short of an Arri 65 or Sony F65 etc... those truly ridiculous priced ones!). Yes, even better than say the usual Arri Alexa. Plus, you can pick up an EVA1 or GH5S as a great B cam for the Varicam! Sony F5 / F55: the F5 is going very cheap these days secondhand, is packed with more features perhaps than any other camera at this price point. (and you're F3 could stick around as a lovely B cam for its "free" price! ha) Sony FS7: basically is a "baby F5", very similar in picture quality, & capable of 4K 60fps 10bit as well. But lacking many of the extra bonuses you might see on the F5, such as TC or genlock, but you said you don't care about those anyway. URSA Mini Pro: best bang for buck of all of these that I'm mentioning! (unless you get an absolute bargain for an F5, which I've seen occasionally them go for FS7 secondhand prices) The URSA Mini Pro is a lovely evolution forward from the URSA Mini 4.6K (which is itself a *lot* better than its brother the URSA Mini 4K, so don't get those two mixed up when reading reviews!) Kinefinity Terra 4K: gives the URSA Mini Pro a hard run for "value for money", coming close behind. Has an eND option with the Kinemount with EF lenses. (also can do PL lenses, but I don't know of an eND for PL, however I imagine with PL lenses you'd be more ok with using a mattebox as well) EVA1: the most compact 4K 10bit on the market! Super lightweight for a camera with those specs plus S35 + NDs + TC + SDI + etc... and you've got the option between EF or PL with a third party accessories. Ones I would *NOT* consider (but you might, but probably won't... as you're stuck with EF *or* PL, not both! But all the cameras I mentioned above, at a minimum, can switch between EF and PL): Canon C200: lacks a middle codec, you only have the extremes of 8bit or raw!! C300 mk2: overpriced (although, its price has massively come down since launch. So not so crazy to pick it now)4 points -

Its that motion that I really like. I put together a 12lb shoulder rig for non IBIS cameras just to get that 16mm shoulder cam look. IBIS retired that rig, and there has been less back pain. Then again, I have a religion whereby the camera must always be moving; I don't even have a decent tripod2 points

So, I was perusing eBay last weekend and found a copy of my favorite lens of all time... the Minolta MC 35mm 1.8 that was converted to EF mount. I was floored. I had sold that lens a while back because I didn't have a camera to use it on, but I really missed my Minolta lenses... especially that one. So I bid on the lens and won the auction. The seller has a very good rating and his communication was excellent but when the lens arrived this morning, it was not as described. The body was clean and the glass looked good but the aperture didn't work at all... which I was surprised by but okay with since I would rarely shoot this lens closed down... this is why you shoot with these old Minolta lenses. But then I quickly realized, that although smooth, the lens ring didn't turn to infinity and I was only able to get 4-5 feet out of her... Ugh... To make a long story short, I was horribly disappointed but the seller was great and we came to a mutual agreement and I kept the lens for a partial refund. I did have a couple minutes to go outside and take some shots. I did a quick Rec709 conversion and a couple exposure adjustments... So, my question is... does anyone know a good Minolta lens technician? And does anybody have any eBay war stories?2 points -

I just made this, no planning, last minute decision to enter cinema5d 1 min short comp. Used gh5 iso 1600-3200 throughout. (Had no lighting to hand).Kind of gets away with it as the shots are quite quick. Gh5s would have have been great in one sense with the low light but it was shot all hand held and ibis was a great help.... I think for now ill still with the gh5 as i cant afford to own both https://youtu.be/lI3rfpQvqtA2 points -

This DPReview database tool really does allow us to strip away the processing and get under the hood of the GH5-S and "really" see what this sensor is taking in. For days we have seen this sensor compared to an A7S-II chip with pixel wells (photo sites) TWICE the size of the GH5-S. For days we have been thinking "how is this possible...I feel like Im seeing heavy ammounts of noise reduction" So yeah,...that is the answer. After inpecting the raw sensor output, its very easy to see the A7S-II's actual signal to noise ratio significantly beats the GH5-S at every ISO/gain level. Even at a low 200 ISO. Mystery solved. Its very hard to beat the laws of "physics". I do give the GH5-S all the credit in the world though. I think Panasonic and Sony really did something very nice together on this camera. This in-camera processing is also pretty intense and is very well executed. CT2 points -

Aussie Ash reacted to Matthew Hartman for a topic
I say skip the Panasonic offerings altogether. "Wha" you say? Outrageous sir! Because you know, and I know as soon as someone releases the same feature set with that coveted bigger sensor and better AF, (which the bar is low) everyone's going to be offloading their G-whatever on eBay like a distant memory, and thus the sickness of perpetual gear-acquisition rages on. I have the sickness too. But I'm starting to ween myself from those shackles and it feels absolutely liberating. Instead, I'm reinvesting in my current setup and investing more time, energy and money into learning more about the filmmaking process outside the camera. I thought buying new gear would scratch some of that itch, but it does not. Yeah, the joy of holding something new is exciting, but the shelf life on this is very short.1 point -

Sorry you are right. I quoted instead of should have just made a new statement. DPR had this is their quick compare thingy. "As well as using the maximum amount of pixels and silicon for each aspect ratio (with consequent image quality benefits), this also means that the diagonal angle of view is preserved, whether you shoot 4:3, 3:2, 16:9 or in DCI 4K's roughly 17:9 aspect ratio. It also means that the GH5S should offer a fractionally wider angle-of-view than the GH5 when shooting video, especially when capturing DCI footage. The only downside is that the use of a larger region could limit the use of APS-C and Super35 lenses in conjunction with focal length reducing adaptors, such as SpeedBoosters. A 0.71x reducer needs to capture a roughly 30.5mm image circle to cover the GH5S's larger video region, while a 0.64x reducer needs a 33.8mm image circle, both of which are larger than is guaranteed to be projected by an APS-C lens. You'll almost certainly be OK with the 0.71x adaptor, since that's been shown to work with the majority of APS-C lenses but with the 0.64x versions it's likely you'll have to check on a case-by-case basis."1 point -

I wonder if some of the issues with Cadence have to do with the monitors being used and the settings. I can see differences in the fluidity of movement. I have several monitors and televisions. How the image is being processed and what settings are being used is very important. The same image on one display or monitor may seem a bit off compared to one of my televisions.1 point -

A lot of people are in the same boat, doesn't seem like we'll ever see "the one" I've been bouncing between two systems - Fuji and Sony for the last couple years - after being a longtime Canon 5d2/3 shooter while dabbling in Nikon with the d750, the Samsung NX1, the GH4 and a few others. I dumped Canon when the a7rII was released, picked up Fuji to get smaller and a better lens lineup - but Fuji has no IBIS which I find to be really useful. M43 don't do it for me on the stills side, so it would be a video only solution. Everything else has its warts. The d850 is really appealing, but that would mean moving back to a DSLR and I don't like fiddling with a mirror and live view, and I don't like the OVF after using high spec EVF's. But for you, check out the Sony 12-24/4 - there's a fantastic comparison thread on Fred Miranda that shows some prime-like performance compared to Zeiss primes. Or get a Nikon adapter for the 14-24.1 point -
The recording length is a bit of a bummer, but most of my stuff is under 30 minutes anyway, and I don't foresee using 4K60p that much. Given what little work I've done has been on the far more limited (compared to the GH4 and GH5) GH3, the G9 seems like a good upgrade.1 point

We know for a fact that the GH5 IS a Sony IMX272. Although, it not verified, we have every indication this S model is an IMX294. Even the 14bit is another give away. Im certain that when Tech Insights (Chip Works) gets this into their lab, de-solders it, X-Rays it, inspects it under their electron microscope and blue prints the entire sensors schematics, they will say its another Sony IMX sensor. (IMX294 or variant) I could be wrong but i wasnt wrong on the GH5 either... :-) (although I must admit that I was tipped off about it by a Sony engineer at the Sony NAB booth last year abour that GH5 sensor)1 point -
Yup, this is one of the toughest things I have encountered. I just posted a couple screengrabs in a thread and I sent the same two screengrabs to my friend via iMessage. Now the ones posted here look a lot more contrasty than the ones I sent to my friend even though they came from the very same jpeg and I’m looking at both on my phone and they still look different. Ugh. And with the video in question here, the girl’s skin looks a little magenta but not enough for me to say it looks horrible. This stuff can be so frustrating some times...1 point

This thread has gotten so long I forget how far back I read a post that Panasonic has to be careful...other companies are nipping at it's heels....really!...which companies???...though I whine about the EF mount on the EVA, because most of my legacy glass is in Nikon or FD mount, I find the image drool worthy...as a cinema camera at that price and size...who's chasing Panasonic...and the GH5 & now the GH5s...and the G9....I'd say Panasonic is very nicely positioned now, and by the time another company gets even close, Panny will be miles ahead with yet some new innovation...I love the image out of BMD cameras too, but find the Panny's so great to shoot with...no real competition I can see anyway!1 point -

That DP Review chart is comparing photos, this is a video centric forum - when you compare the video of GH5s and the A7s from what I've seen up to iso 12800 maybe even 25000 the GH5s is a cleaner image and the colour doesn't fall apart in the same way the Sony does. From 25000 iso and above the Sony clearly takes over but how many people shoot at those crazy high isos? The Gh5s is better at iso levels where 99% of users will be using it1 point -

That is pretty much exactly what I expected. I see some are not happy that it isn't the match of the better FF cameras in low light but I would say it looks amazing in low light FOR an M43 sensor. The other stuff for video is why you should buy the camera, that it is competing with some better APSC sensors for low light is the bonus. I can see some adding a GH5s to a GH5 for lower light (than the GH5) instead of a A7sii with a GH5.1 point -

It is obvious that the reasons they did not implement IBIS in GH5s are clearly technical, although I think it is possible with this new sensor after some minor mods in the body. I respect every technical justification for not implementing IBIS, like: It doesn't fit, it generates heat ,vignetting is introduced etc. But those exaggerated claims like: "We asked the pros and they said NO, IBIS sucks, don't implement this, cinema cameras don't have IBIS, leave this off board please", cmon these are bullsh$t... GH5's target group (i am talking about the majority here) does not mount their cameras on cars, and even if they will, the proper way is to put the camera on a gimbal. How many users have encountered problems with these "ibis jumps" when using GH5 on a gimbal? I am using this camera every day for almost 6 months now. I have never switched IBIS off, and never encountered these problems that "the same company which produced the freakin camera" reports. Until last week IBIS was one of the reasons to buy a Lumix, and since last week it is a flow which "professionals users reported to Pana"? GH6 will definately have it, paired with a stupid marketing term like "magnet freeze", and those "reported by pros issues" will vanish. We know this, they know this.1 point -

Two problems I see that in reality can never be put back in the Bottle is 24 hour news shows, and a amazingly scary amount of up loads to You Tube every day. The news shows are looking for the most dirt they can find, whether it is true or not. They don't dare fact check it or someone else will not and beat them to the story. Endless loop. No way in hell You Tube can review the stuff as fast as it comes in, probably not even with computers let alone 1,000's of humans. So no clue how they stop it. Lots of people can care less if they get money from uploads, so no big deal if no advertiser wants to give them 5 cents. And there are tons more problems like you mentioned. I see no way we Can go back. I think we are on the Highway to Hell to be honest. World was III around the corner maybe. It Ain't looking good long term I can tell you that much. I just see it getting much worse, let alone just treading water. I think the Internet may well prove to be the worse thing Ever invented in the long run. Wow so much anger Joachim! If only you were as angry about "everything feeds us shit and always has"... or "money makes the world go round"... Because normal human response to this is to be angry and try and change things. Maybe you are not human? A Russian troll perhaps?! Anyway it sounds like your opinion there is pretty similar to what I said in the article if you think YouTube is feeding us shit and always has. By the way... It's not a "trivial rant". The only thing trivial here is your response. A resigned *sigh* rather than a call for quality content. This is a very simple problem to fix. YouTube takes editorial responsibility, ditches the algorithm driven trending home page and ranking system, actively promotes good quality stuff so that people sees it, starts investing in content like all other TV networks do. YouTube is not just a platform for hosting videos, it is a mass media channel. Time they took responsibility. And if you don't understand that Joachim or what's at stake... why the fuck are you a filmmaker? You may as well not be.1 point
