  1. hi guys, i have travelled to Patagonia a month ago and put this film together. Was also shot entirely on Samsung NX1. Would love to hear your thoughs :

  5. not sure - nikon could differentiate by the mirrorless not having quite as good af, not being quite as fast, not having quite the same usability. To be honest though if they dont make the absolute best camera they are capable of (as I feel they did with the d850), they are F#!*ed. This is my day job. If I had one camera for stills and video I could shoot both at the same time, certain properties this would save me hours. A7riii is the closes to fitting the bill at the moment, but it still doesn't quite have the dynamic range (or the look) of the nikon. My experience with sony cams so far is that the usability isn't a patch on nikons, but I hear that is improving.

Maybe you can hide this under your jacket? And people complain a GH5 body is too big.

  7. - A NX1 sized body. - IBIS - A7r II sensor as a base - Video Quality from D850 - Dual Card Slots. - Mini or Full Size HDMI out. That is all it would take for me to buy. I love my A7r II, but miss Nikon Lenses.

  8. Was thinking of doing a review of the G9. The G85 was a good bargain. This time, price has shot up. I like the ergonomics of the body better than the GH5 - The top-LCD and layout changes make for a more comfortable camera There is no lag when finishing a clip. You hit record and it stops immediately The EVF is massive... However, has anybody else noticed the DRAMATIC pincushion distortion in the viewfinder... It's really not nice. Very distracting. AF seemed better than the GH5. It was as quick to do a one-time AF-S in movie mode as in stills mode. GH5 is slower to do that. The AF during 4K was not up to Sony or Canon's best, but it was again seemingly better than the GH5 in the brief time I tried it out. Does not come close to A7R III for video AF overall though. Pic profiles... The lack of Hybrid LOG Gamma is a shame. Sony did not feel the need to pull SLOG or HLG from their flagship stills camera (A7R III)... Panasonic apparently did. But then again, Sony did not include them in the A9 so they are not entirely sane either. All in all, G9 or GH5? I'd say GH5. Now they are practically the same price, but one is 10bit with HDR and one is 8bit SDR, it's a bit too silly to lose that for the sake of slightly better body handling and AF. And the BIG viewfinder with that much distortion gives me pause for thought as well. I am all for big viewfinders, but do you really want so much pincushion in EVERY shot?

    Pencils, Lots of Them!

I know this has Nothing to do with video. Well I use a Pencil to write story boarding and scripts. Does that count? But I will never look at a pencil the same again. Amazing amount of work and machines to make one! Amazing Photography to boot. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/12/magazine/inside-one-of-americas-last-pencil-factories.html

  18. Yes for raw stills. There is very little noise and when pushed its 99% luma noise which is very easy to remove or plesant to keep. I often shoot the new Fuji sensor in daylight at iso 4000 just because of the nice grain structure.

  20. No way Nikon will do 10bit 4:2:2 internal. I just hope for no cropped 4K! Do not forget that Panasonic had to make a utilitarian big and heavy dSRL body like (GH5) to achieve good thermal performance. I am sure Nikon will go the “pretty” way, more form than factor. If anyone wants a more pro body, there are always a few dSLRs on their line up, and some equally in size/weight with the GH5. With all said, good old 8bit 4:2:0 is enough for most jobs and most amateurs. not everyone has an expensive 10 bit workflow, and if they do, probably care for different form factored cameras and real cine lenses. I do not see them doing IBIS, anamorphic, or fair price either! Maybe they will try IBIS for the very first time, it is a strong selling point these days, but probably a Dual IS (lens+ electronic stabilizer) is more possible.

  21. I actually really enjoy using Nikon's "FLAT" profile. Gets a ton of DR and easy to grade. My hope is that because Nikon has no Cinema line to protect, they go full on 10-bit 4:2:2 out of the gate. The footage from the D850 is spectacular for 8-bit, I just want that in a mirrorless body.

  22. It's pretty obvious the 5K is dead. I think it'll be a while before we'll see an actually good Super35 high-res global shutter sensor and I doubt it's going to come from the sub-5000-dollar market either. The one in BMD4K and Aja Cion was pretty much a disaster and it's likely Kinefinity hit the same problems they did (bad light sensitivity, insufficient DR with global shutter). Remember when BMD was saying the 4,6K sensor would have an on/off global shutter mode? Back then they said activating the global shutter would have a DR hit of 2-3 stops. I'm sure it ended up being way more, as the DR hit would indicate they probably weren't able to do a dual gain readout simultaneously with global shutter. I'm pretty sure something similar happened with Kinefinity - they just couldn't wrangle a competetive image out of the 5K GS.

  23. The G85 has a bit more competitive lifespan in it, but by PhotoKina time Sony will have another a5000- or a6000-series out or announced, and Canon will probably have a 90D. Panasonic will need a G85 replacement with the 20MP sensor, 4K60 8-bit, and still with IBIS of course, and still under a grand, preferably with a kit lens, to compete. The G9 can keep the crazy photo framerates to justify its price, and the GH5/GH5s can keep the 10-bit and high bitrates.

  24. Market just isn't there for the cheaper stuff any more. Sony did same thing with A6000 -> A6300 -> A6500. Massive price hikes.

  25. It's very nice. A few initial thoughts in this thread: The 4K quality is superior to X-T20 and no crop like there is on X-T2. Rolling shutter is worse though.

  27. Quite shocking seeing the difference between the URSA Mini 4.6K and 4K, identical cameras! Except for the sensor...... But really, no surprise to us who have been following BMD over the years. Basically the Panasonic G85 is as good (or even a little tiny bit better) as the URSA Mini 4K for DR

  28. How is that possible when the image circle is a constant for m43? Look at the image circle and the various aspect ratios, they all have corners that touch the circle, hence the diagonal is identical. Its 2x relative to FF, always. DCI is no different than 4:3 or 3:2 with that sensor because the image is still coming from within the same image circle - per Panasonic. So yes 2 x 0.64 or 1.28 crop with FF lenses. My previous comment you quoted didn't make any mention about IQ or codecs, just the crop factor with FF lenses and a speed booster. chris

  30. You know that same sort of thing happened to me in 2008. And at the time I lived in Florida when house values went down the crapper. So I lost most of my money in the Stock Market and just about gave my paid off house away. I was a year from being able to retire at 62. So I sold off all I could, got out of debt and hated the hell out of my job for a year. Then I retired. I am pretty lucky to have Social Security and 2 Pensions. My first wife died of Cancer so I get her pension on top of mine for the rest of my life. So yeah I could use extra money, who can't but I don't really need it to live month to month. Just to buy Toys LoL. Things happen that you have very little control of. When you are younger you can bounce back back. My age not so much. One thing I can tell you younger guy to do. Naturally not try and get a zillion dollars in debt, but to try hard as hell to keep a good credit rating. And try hard as hell to repair it if it is crap. When you are older you can't show a lot of income unless you are lucky as hell so if your credit is crap you have to Buy everything at a higher interest rate because of bad credit. Or hell you might not be able to buy it at all. And say you want to go on a big trip, or buy a RV you have to have a couple of credit cards with high credit limits in case your RV breaks down, your truck blows an engine, or on a vacation and you are snowed in for a month. Without them you are screwed unless you have a Mom who will send you money by the hand fulls LoL. And by the time you are old good chance both your parents are dead. My Mom is still going strong at 93, but my father died at 62. You Never know. It takes money to do anything, but if you are 1,000 miles from home you REALLY need money at times. Keep Good Credit! It will bite you in the ass if you don't. Young or old.

  31. Very unlikely. One inch sensor would require a larger camera and lens, thus bigger motors and gimbal to handle the load with higher ground clearance and larger vibration dampening system (=higher skids, bigger battery to handle the front heavy CG, etc.). There no free meal. I'm not sure that you can design a compact drone like the Mavic with a one inch sensor. The Typhoon Plus is interesting, the main point of this drone is redundancy. Thanks to it's 6 motors, the Typhoon can withstand a single propeller, ESC, or motor failure whereas any quadcopter would spin-crash to death in case of prop/motor failure (note: the Inspire 2 has ESC redundancy). Unfortunately I doubt that Autel and Walkera can shake DJI technological and commercial advantage. Autel is facing DJI lawsuit and they announced drones in the past that failed to materialized (X-Star 3 & Venture II). They are lagging in terms of technology. Their RC link are way behind DJI lightbrige and ocusync digital links. The Typhoon plus is based on a classical PX4 flight controller. DJI owns the market. The pathetic attempts like the 3DR Solo and the GoPro Karma have been commercial failures. DJI will probably announce a new Phantom or an updated Mavic (higher bitrate, etc.). Perhaps a new Osmo or X7 compatibility.

  32. Whut. No more entry level does-it-all-quite-well sub 1000 bucks cam like the G80/85? I mean, that was already an up from the G7 both in price, but as well capability, but to leave that segment to the GX-range alone, seems a little... strange. The gap between that and a G9 is quite big... and apparently they don't have a problem with diversifying their line-up, so they really think they can push people towards a G9 like that? Hum...

  33. Well, I'm telling you it is. Panasonic told me directly!

  34. The Sony FE lenses tend mostly to have the more quiet AF motors, but some of the high-end GM lenses do make a clicking sound. The Batis 25 and 85 are great... and silent. Very impressed with the Sigma 24-35mm...As well as world's fastest full frame zoom lens, the quality is as per Zeiss Batis 25mm F2 prime... Which is more expensive by the way, and only fits one mount... But with the Sigma, you are getting a 24, 28 and 35mm prime in one lens...that goes on A7R3, 1DX, 1DC, GH5, you name it... and a handy 50mm field of view when you switch to Super 35mm mode to boot. All at F2.0 and pin sharp, with Dual Pixel AF quality autofocus in 4K on the A7R3. Most of the Sigma lenses I've tried so far do all make a noise when focussing though, so you won't want to use the onboard audio with video AF... Same situation as on a 1D X Mark II, just for the record The 18-35mm seemed a lot quieter though, almost silent?! It's just very very positive to finally have Video Autofocus with Canon mount lenses... Albiet just the Sigma ones. The Canon lenses DO NOT autofocus in video mode, and neither do Tamron or the older Sigma non-ART lenses. Throw them on the scrap. When did they introduce this BTW? MC-11 has been out for ages but I haven't seen a word out of the other bloggers and sites about C-AF in video mode + Sigma lenses. Dickheads lol Metabones still works better in stills mode with Canon lenses... but reliability is shit with Sigma ART. So you may end up having to get both adapters. At least the Sigma is competitive priced. Mine was 250 euros brand new.

What about the Mitakon 85 1.2 in EF mount? I do love my old 85 1.2 FD but it has the dissolving bearings problem some FD lenses have so focus is very loose. You could always get a FD to M43 focal reducer to go with the FD 85 1.2.

  37. Here's where the logic comes in: 2 x 0.64 = 1.28, similar to APS-H, as you say. But you're not comparing apples-to-apples if you're using an FF camera to shoot video. Because they have a 3:2 sensor, if you want to shoot DCI 4K, you've actually got a ~1.07x crop factor with any FF camera. So 1.07 vs. 1.28 is only a 1.2x relative crop factor. Which is of course noticeable, but very small. And given that the GH5S has a much more robust codec than any of the FF video cameras currently available for under $10K, and the new sensor appears to have higher quantum efficiency as well, you can call that 1.2x difference essentially negligible.

  38. Wow. That's great news. Hopefully a Mavic Pro @ below $1500 with a 1inch sensor.

  39. It would probably help us if you explained what type of stills and what type of video you do. Also if you could clarify a few things you said: What does that mean exactly? What sort of work did you find yourself having to do with the GH5 that you didn't have to do with the gx85? How would the a7r2 be a compromise on stills? It is one of the best stills cameras around, as far as I know. How much of your income is derived from stills? How much from video? It sounds to me like maybe the new Sony a7r III MIGHT give you a good compromise of stills quality, video quality, less weight. But it is hard to say without knowing what you shoot day to day. I want to believe that whatever Nikon comes out with will be great, but I am not willing to bet the farm on it. Will they be able to source sensors with great on-sensor AF performance? And if so, what lenses do they have that will work WELL with it? As far as I know, most Nikon lenses are REALLY BAD with on-sensor CDAF, and I would wager that they wouldn't work well (or at all) with any future sensor-based AF technology. My guess was that the new P lenses are designed with an eye on working with any future LiveView AF, but P lenses are few and far between, as far as I can tell. Have you considered how much money you might be leaving on the table by NOT going with two separate cameras / two separate systems and waiting for something that may or may not come?

  40. I've built prototypes of an iscorama-style single-focus adapter, but its really only suitable for shorter focal lengths in the 35mm to 75mm range. Also, its a bit large, and the front element moves during focusing, which may cause some issues with matte boxes. I'm also building a second type better suited for longer focal lengths in the 75 to 200mm range. I'm still debating whether to modify these for internal focusing, which would be good for heavy-duty cine use, but would make the adapters larger, heavier, and more expensive. To be honest, I've put the adapter project on hold until I get a few focal lengths in my anamorphic prime series completed.

Please do! Even with that basic post work, the images look so thick and juicy... cinema cameras cannot be beat. If I wasn’t such a run and gun shooter, I would definitely consider the F3... but I doubt I could go incognito on a ferry to shoot a scene while looking like a tourist. But for the price...and maybe double the price... the F3 is the best image around.

  44. It’s a pre-production unit. So hopefully this is rectified by release. The final judgment will be the image. If NR is good, and doesn’t turn the image to mush while it maintains high IQ, then I’m ok with it. I’m honestly hoping this thing pans out. We will know soon enough. Like I’ve said before clean 6400 ISO would be enough to make me happy. Anything beyond that is just gravy.

  46. December is a strange one, don't know why they are so slow! Maybe the other stuff is holding up 4K, like getting the autofocus tracking to finally work properly But thank you Fuji for giving us this rare gift. It is the first time in the camera industry that 4K has been added with a firmware update. Such a dramatic leap in quality from just firmware Just shows they are playing us for idiots most of the time... as the 5D Mk III shows also! The X-Pro 2 is my favourite fuji camera... So I will be selling my X-T2 and X-T20. This firmware update has saved me a lot of money

  47. So tomorrow is "Fujikina" aka party time and 4K firmware update for the Fuji X Pro 2!! If it doesn't happen, we are going to have to hang the DJ (FujiRumors) from a VERY high post. I have my hopes up like anything!! I see they are reporting in-body 5 axis stabilisation for the X-T2S as well... That would be a very nice move by Fuji.

  48. I don't find this to be the case. The GH5 does both stills and video while getting out the way. It's seamless, and far more convenient to use than a cinema camera. It has auto-exposure, a button to start recording, a very long run-time on one small battery and goes in the palm of your hand. Not so a highly specialised RED Epic which is heavy, requires a brick for a battery, has no point & shoot modes or full auto and needs specialised knowledge to use.

  49. A quick video demo of the new prodder in action. All controls are real time with feedback of the parameters on the LCD screen. The video shows a recording of the G7 being controlled (and of it being controlled as the changes are live when its recording) but will obviously work with the other Lumix cameras. Parameters controlled are : Profile type (Standard, cinelike D etc) Contrast Noise Reduction Sharpness Saturation Hue and ISO so you can see any effect changes that may or may not occur with your current settings at different ISOs Now there may be no bugs in the software but there certainly was in the video. A real life bug crawling across the Colour Checker!
