I have the Panasonic 8-18, and while I do love that lens and it’s sharpness for photos, it doesn’t really have the practical advantages for video you might think. The autofocus is bad to the point where I don’t even use it for vlogging. I’ll set focus and flick the switch on the barrel to manual. It’s that bad, even in daytime sunlight. The IBIS also doesn’t play very nice with it on the wider end. There’s a lot of jello and background warp happening there. But That will likely be the case for any lens that wide. it is still one of the better options for the system, given that it has filter threads and has great image quality. Just be aware that the autofocus can be maddening and fly by wire is verrrry difficult to pull reliably and consistently. for my purposes, I still think it’s the right choice. But if you don’t mind the bulk of adapted lenses and will be doing mostly manual focusing, there are better options.3 points

Need to rant. Found out the G9 uses the outdated and unpopular USB 3.0 Micro-B port. WTF? The GH5 has a USB C port and somehow Panasonic thought it was a good idea to take a step backwards? Freaking boggles my mind, these Japanese companies.2 points

Have a look at the 2nd hand market. Overseas it's much cheaper. I once bought the Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 for 99 bucks from B&H (so, US to Europe), they had re-labelled it in Germany and came to my doorstep free of additional fees. Of course, one might not always be lucky, but even through the official procedures that SLR Magic might still be cheaper with all charges. There it's 539 USD. So ~ 440 EUR. Shipping. Not sure, 30 bucks perhaps. So 25 EUR. Total value taxed is 465 EUR. Say import duties are 4.2% customs duties (I believe for optical equipment) ~ 20 EUR and 23% VAT ~ 110... handling fee about 15 more. You've got it for about 610,- EUR or 2545 PLN. - Adorama has a bundle up for sale with their vND: https://www.adorama.com/slr1021mfnd2.html1 point

Ultra wide angle for GH5: native or adapted?
Grégory LEROY reacted to Cinegain for a topic
Yeah, that Canon actually performs rather well, doesn't it. Atleast in terms of detail/sharpness... might not have given it enough thought over the years, mainly because of that mount. But like you say, there are ways. Or natively again, that 9-18mm Olympus. Voigtländer seems to have a nice look to it, but not everybody is a fan of the quality. Kowa has an 8mm. And SLR Magic has a 10mm as well of course: https://www.eoshd.com/2015/01/slr-magic-10mm-t2-1-review/ For something between your both ends, 12mm is available from just about everyone. A lot of choice there, incl. Veydra.1 point -

I don't think it is because they couldn't go wider readily but it would have been a lot more difficult and a lot more expensive. Nikon have had a rectilinear 13mm FF lens since 1976 but they are rare and cost a mint now. It is easier and cheaper to make a lens with more distortion now and correct it in camera I think. Another reason I love FF, just much more choice for wide angles (you can get those cheap old 19-35 Soligor's and similar for very little money and many variants of 16/17/20-35/50 type lenses). One lens I have always wanted to try on M43 is the Canon 10-18 STM (I would use it on a Kipon non focal reducer smart adapter).1 point

Very true this...Todays "perfection" is NOT perfect imagery and cinematographic perfection - it's just action / emotion / information / entertainment, etc. Nowadays cinema screen is the smartphone or tablet...And NOONE (OK...not true, I mean 99,9 percent of young audience) cares about "color science" and 300% punch ins... Do I personally like this? For sure not...But we can't refuse to face reality...1 point -

Yeah but in 10 years, who knows, Hollywood maybe a former shell of it's self. There is no real good reason for it to exist much longer in reality. This Harvey Weinstein thing is just the tip of the Iceberg out there. Hollywood has been a Sleazy place since the beginning with the Casting Couch thing, and worse. And oh, no doubt it has been a two way street. Not every woman out there is innocent as hell past and present. I lived in Florida for 12 years, and what women did to try and find some old man to hope to marry, and hope they died in 5 years or less was crazy. In the news nearly every day down there. But in this day you know 10 years from now You Tube or Vimeo, something else will be the New Hollywood. Why does it take 200 million dollars to really make a movie in this day?? Come on. I am aware you can't do a lot of that yet at home, but hell 10 years from now I would almost bet you will be able to. Other than shooting on film almost anyone now can rent or Buy a Cine camera that can make a Big time movie. Right there tells you the end is near. An old Arri Alexa has enough DR right now to get the job done, and has been doing it. We Don't need 6k, 8k. Not that many people even go to a huge movie theater anymore. It is mostly kids, and they don't know crap about video perfection. Casey Neistat Is right. He is the future, not Harvey Weinstein and people like him! Harvey doesn't know it , but he is making it happen even faster.1 point -
Ultra wide angle for GH5: native or adapted?
Grégory LEROY reacted to TARS for a topic
I'm travelling for an indefinite period of time (at least a year), so I only carry the GH5, three lenses, and a microphone. So weight, volume, weather sealing, and the ability to easily attach and remove filters were the things that mattered the most to me. But I am doing video about 90% of the time. But like I say, if you're manually focusing anyway and don't mind a bit of extra weight, I would use something that isn't fly by wire.1 point -

Opinion Thread - Body-mounted Stabilizers
zerocool22 reacted to Fritz Pierre for a topic
@Riadnasla you are referring to an actual steadycam style stabilizer with vest...is this correct?....If you are, I would look at a Came TV or symilar cheap knockoff style vest arm system, and the actual mechanical "steadycam" you buy that carries the camera is where I'd spend the money....although they take practice, IMO a gimbal will never equal the beauty of footage from a good steadycam operator. As the C100 is not that heavy and gimbals are the rage now, you can probably find a glide cam or something symilar quite cheap used.1 point -
The noise is going to be really bad...almost useless. Unless you use higher end drones. Will the final footage be 4k or 1080 ? With downsampling, you probably can reduce some noise. Anything below P4P is useless. I shot Budapest at blue hour. May look passable on small iPhone screen but it's totally crap. THEN, there is the bigger issue of focusing. The focusing on these things are pain, specially in low light. So, regular P4 has a fixed focus, which is perfect for anything farther than 1-2M. But it only has the small sensor. Newer drones have a AF. But, they always hunt and it's a pain, especially the kind of shot you described where you want change your distance from your subject and elevate your position. My suggestion would be to see if you can rent a Inspire 2 with a X5r camera. This is a m4/3 camera that shoots raw. Use a m4/3 lens and set some kind of hyperlocal length manually on your focus and shoot with that. The noise is going to be really bad...almost useless. Unless you use higher end drones. Sony A7R III review - the BBC fixed Sony's colour!
jonpais reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
Yep, this is the problem. I love full frame. I love DPAF. I love cameras that are great in lowlight. I love great hybrids. Yesterday, I was hired to do some content for a new sports product. In the end, did more stills than video! (with a GH5!) I'm being really strict with new purchases - I willingly get another model / different camera / tool if it's ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. The GH5 is doing it's job very well for the moment.1 point -

The guy in this video is right by what he says, however there's something missing from his argument. Most gear talk and hype and all that is a waste of time and a huge distraction from the actual purpose of doing, yet there are times when camera A could offer dramatically better results than camera B with the desired job it fulfils. Some people are just really unsure, because choosing the right camera as a beginner, is overwhelming and daunting. The main message though, he's absolutely right. Yesterday i filmed a studio shoot, and straight away I realised i didn't have enough lighting, and I started adding new lights into my virtual shopping basket in my head. But i had to work with it, used the knowledge I had with lighting and cameras and delivered a decent result. With Casey, I'm not an avid follower but I enjoyed this particular video very much. The editing was clever and the message came through strongly. @webrunner5 - I think the "new topic" is justified as it's a topic that offers great discussion and debate.1 point -

Your Nikon mirrorless wishes
IronFilm reacted to Don Kotlos for a topic
I don't find it unlikely for sigma to be developing lenses for Nikon Z mount. Sigma is planning on releasing several native E mount lenses as well. It would make sense to have a common lens design that is shared across mirrorless cameras with short flange distance. Same way DSLR series exist for 3 mount systems but they are practically the same lens. This would be a golden opportunity for a lens company to enter a brand new mount system that will most definitely have very limited lens selection for the first couple of years, and it will be a good idea for Nikon as well to have plenty of choices for a new mount system.1 point -

I keep a tab open on the main forum index, that means old topics get flushed out by new ones to the 2nd page. If we have everybody opening a topic for each article they found interesting, there's no conversation anymore. I mean, if you want to start a single blog kind collection thread where you post all the articles that you find interesting, that's cool. But likely, we all come around the rumor sites, news sites or subscribe to these channels if that had interested us already. So... when we have that out of the way, we can come here and discuss our own experiences, like you say, help and inspire eachother, you know, human interaction, rather than a flood of posted articles. And yeah, of course, what this guy says: Now I could've dropped that video in it's own topic... but I didn't.1 point

I have the Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO which trully does a spectacular job. But it is huge and doesn't have a filter ring natively. Before I used to fly handheld gimbal stabilizers of the mechanical kind with the GH2 and the adapted Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, but I don't find the image all that satisfying, I find the Olympus has less distortion and better sharpness. But you do need like a 3D printed accessory to be able to mount filters in front. Then more recently Laowa came out with the 7.5mm f/2 MFT rectilinear lens (which the Oly is as well, btw) and it is the perfect thing for wide angle. It's small and light (I have the lightweight version, should I decide to throw it on some aerial platform one day) and actually takes filters natively. Image quality is rather good for the size. People also used to use the Olympus 9-18mm quite a bit, might be worth having a look at. Otherwise... Gordon Laing I believe mentioned it was his favourite lens to come out last year? Just because it's so practical. But I have to agree with you on the look, nothing about these recent Panasonic Leica zooms screams that Leica look, like their primes do (most notably of course the 42.5mm f/1.2). So... dunno. For me, right now it's a mixture of convenience VS quality when I go out, so either Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO or 7.5mm f/2 MFT from Laowa.1 point

One last thing, the down draft from the drone, will most likely ruffle the blanket and hair on your talent. So you probably wont get the shot you want. Remember these drones are very powerful to lift a few pounds into air. So there is a lot of down draft blowing under the drone and it may be distracting to the story you want to tell.1 point

Sony A7R III review - the BBC fixed Sony's colour!
Nathan Gabriel reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
It doesn’t change the situation with Pro Color because the A7R III doesn’t let you select BT.2020 with a standard gamma curve, only LOG (HLG) mode... So you can’t use it for straight out of camera colour (which is what EOSHD Pro Color is for). You need to add a LUT. In the article I say BT.2020 is developed jointly by BBC and NHK. It’s not a Sony standard but a HDR broadcast standard. Canon use it as well. S-Gammut is the Sony equivilent wide colour space. And that needs tweaking to work well and / or expert grading.1 point -
