  1. After an extensive test in Alaska...I found that the Canon 6D Mkii SUCKS BALLS! Casey Neistat and Peter McKinnon are SO wrong. This camera is total garbage. I can't believe Canon would even release a camera like this with the price being what it is. Totally unacceptable. No ALL-I, worse ISO performance than 80D, No headphone jack. Its a total POS. Let me know your thoughts.

  2. Are you implying some people sell their "opinions"? Have I been lied to my whole life? Endorsements are a BS marketing ploy? Dang. And, yeah, Canon rolls out a bunch of gear. A lot of it is hamstrung in video specs. That's how they roll. I hope you're not legitimately worried or concerned about any of this. It's the same story, different day.

  3. Agreed. The noise is fine without weird color artefacts even when very aggressively pushed. I often use iso 4000 to 6400 in decent light just to get a nice grain effect.

  4. He did a great write up on that movie (Mullen, that is). The whole thing was shot on a sound stage and for very little money. David Mullen is a great guy (and a great DP), who shares his experience and expertise willingly and exhaustively with the community.

  5. Ok you changed my mind. Its much better to have a 2018 Datsun than a 2016 BMW... how could I not have seen it. Age is a more important spec than image quality, ergonomics, button layout, lenses, etc. Boy are the XT2 shooters gonna be disappointed when the X-H1 is released. Imagine waking up and turning on the computer just to see all the great photos you had have turned to shit. Phone is ringing with angry clients demanding their money back. Your wife screaming because all the pictures of the kids has turned to turds in microwaves. Its gonna be brutal.

  7. HLG uses more of the tonal range of the H264 container and also has more accurate tonal density than VlogL. Unless using slowmo (cine-D) I use HLG.

  8. I actually woke up this morning wondering if there are other areas of film production that can be completely re-thought (and improved!) the way that FCPX improved the concept of the timeline. It is a very different way of thinking about laying out shots. But because it is so unmoored from legacy systems and thinking, I feel that much more free to experiment with ideas. It took awhile to learn, and all of my processes are not fully integrated with the software. But cutting and iterating through concepts is so much faster that I wish I could work with it for every project.

  9. I always have a hard time saying a stills camera sucks just because its not the best video camera in the world. If video is that important I use a video dedicated camera. But with that said. Nice review.

  11. “Anyone can photograph nature”, a fashion photographer once said. “You just have to wait for the right light!” I disagree. In my opinion, there's more to that than meets the eye. This is the story of Latvian outdoor lifestyle photographer Filips Baumanis. This is me attempting story-driven filmmaking for the first time, as previously I've mostly done landscape and travel content (a seen on www.eaglewoodfilms.com). Shot on the trusty Sony A6500 and Phantom 4 Pro for aerials. Did all the shooting, editing, grading and sound design myself. Comments? Feedback? Fire away!

This is a pretty compact manual focus lens for MFT (cheap too!): https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1383714-REG/opteka_optm3517m43_35mm_f1_7_high_definition.html The 50mm looks pretty small too? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1383719-REG/opteka_optm5020m43_50mm_f2_0_high_definition.html And this: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1387945-REG/7artisans_photoelectric_7a35f12bkm43_35mm_f1_2_aps_c_for.html

They came in a couple of different housings. Some zebra striped and some all black. But they should be very similar in performance. Yes, you unscrew put on the new mount. Everything is included and you get a couple of sweet metal rear caps.

  16. @Andrew Reid, I don't know how many times I've recommended for you to ditch Premiere and go FCPX. I've been using FCPX since the very first version, and because it was so different, I couldn't even put two clips together. But I persisted. To this day, I'd say FCPX has been the greatest creative decision I've ever made. Editing is more enjoyable, it's faster, it's seamless, it's a time saver. You have to regard that FCPX is not Premiere and does everything it can not to be like Premiere. It's a totally different machine. You don't try and drive a car like you would a motorcycle! When you learn to use it fluidly, your head starts shaking in utter shame of the people who trash it day in, day out. Their loss. To me, Premiere feels like a dinosaur with broken legs. It's still editing the "old way". FCPX was an ambition ahead of it's time, and now has matured into what I think is the best editing program today. Persist with it, learn it, and I'm certain you will love it.

  17. Absolutely right. I am continually amazed by the amount of shadow detail I can bring back in my X-T2 stills (haven't really done much video with them yet - awaiting the spring). Also - and many have said this - upping the ISO brings out noise that really does just look like film grain, with virtually no banding or false colour. I shoot mine at 800 most of the time, as it's pretty much noise-free, but one of my presets, based off Classic Chrome, I shoot at a minimum of 6400 and it looks gorgeous!

  18. My understanding is that they sent him one for review and he loved it so much he bought one. He's produced some beautiful stuff with it - for a cinematographer he's a pretty tasty stills photographer! But seriously, @webrunner5 - film is dead? Fujifilm cameras are crap? Did someone steal your car this morning or something? There are no rules when it comes to creative endeavour. People will use whatever realises their creative vision the best - for them. There's really no need to shout people down and disrespect their creative choices.

You said: "There is a PCIe 3.0 x2 bus left if they decide to add something like a CFexpress card-slot,..." That is just perfect, Samsung has an extremely performant memory card as 2TB PRO 860 SSD in M.2 connector (PCIe 3.0), much like any SD card but could be up to 2-3 times longer, with xGB/s transfer rates so I presume even 4k60 in RAW will be easy to write on it. All I can say is WOW and hope it will be!

  23. The funny is the fact the parade doesn't end there at 10,000 lumens... Take a look on this example here: And the utmost is when the 10,000 lumens theory proves to be the spot number. If not, the difference from 10,000 to 20,000 should duplicate the impact. It simply doesn't at all. Interesting to say the least. @zerocool22 you got a home run here, pal (E :-)

    Is FCPX still trash?

You can save the keyframed opacity as an effect preset for fade in, fade out or both at once. Double clicking will apply either of them. You can lift a clip from the primary and apply cmd+t to either left or right bracket or whole clip. You are married to Premiere, Andrew. Move on.

I know i do. tomorrow is a birthday party, i think i gonna shoot some photos there with my gx85 and the 20mm pancake, using it´s builtin flash and plastic photofilm shell for diffusion with some orange gel inside it. missing my gf1 for that, which i lent to somebody. Gonna watch me some classic Mattias Burling video now. cheers

  28. Once you get use to doing things the FCPx way, every other NLE I've used - Premiere, Avid and Grass Valley - is just so slow in comparison. The above video Axel posted is one of a few I watched after the 10.3 update that convinced me to spend some time really learning FCPx after working with the others for years. Now I can't go back. Resolve just doesn't jive with me at all either. FCPx is my do-it-all solution. YMMV. Chris

    NX2 rumors

@Trek of Joy So true, great comment. @timmyturntable "glad I bought it, nothing else is worth trading for it yet" class here too... Like @lucabutera said, after the mobile phones exploded in poeple's pockets and coats what happened? Samsung increased its profit in the mobile department! If they offer that spec list (that will never happen, we are just having some fun here) for 3.000$, tell me who isn't going to consider one of those? Instead of the , let's say, the new 90D that barely will have 4K.. Come one, NX1 was an unbelievable machine, in more than one senses (continuous 78 minutes video, for some this is significant), no over heating in the worst conditions (I know!), unbelievable ergonomics (subjective, but not really!), great JPG engine, colors, AWB, DIS and DUAL IS with some lenses, the unique workhorse S lens and dead cheap very sharp pancake primes, etc. What you were buying back in 2014? 16mgpxls GH4, 16m,gpxls Fuji (not even doing any video) 70D, and 7D, and a6000.. Come on people.. All I can say is, glad I bought it, nothing else is trading for it yet, and now I am spending money on other stuff, rather than consider buying my 3rd or 4th camera after I abandoned NX1 (or never bought it!). P.S actually I bought a 3rd and 4th camera. A NX3000, NX500 and another NX1! Guess what, I do 3-4 camera low budget jobs, I give the smaller cameras to all my relatives to take pictures, and everyone is happy (me too!).

  30. I do! I will be selling it as soon as I finish building the website (which is taking a little longer than I hoped). Some key differences between my design and the other guy's version: Mine isn't made from ridiculous red 3D-printed plastic. The housing is made from anodized black 6061 machined aluminum that I had commissioned. I disassembled, degreased, and re-greased the helicoid with superior lubricant. My mod includes my custom-built dual-bracket 15mm rail support clamp. My mod doesn't require re-alignment when switching lenses. I don't cut corners or try to hide anything. I make no secret that this mod wouldn't have been possible without the help from the good people on the EOSHD forums. I make no secret that you can build this mod yourself (you can read my development thread here). My mod is a turnkey solution - it doesn't require an overpriced, threadless 3D-printed lens clamp. My mod will be selling for less than his. Side note: Like Carlo, I've also found John Barlow (Rectilux) very helpful and quick to respond.

  31. Why all this hate? Did Kodak and Pentax beat you up in school or something? Why get upset over what color or flavor of ice cream one prefers. Im never gonna understand that mentality. Its just seems like such a waste of energy. (Ps. You don't get to tell me what is"best" and except me to blindly agree. Its only your personal opinion and isn't more right or wrong than mine.)

    NX2 rumors

Unfortunately, I predict that due to Samsung "abandoning" NX system in the past, that IF they released a NX2 in the future it would get less market traction than the NX1 did :-( What about those in the middle ground between the two? :-D I've never owned a NX1, but I do own another NX system camera (sitting right here next to me as I type! Closest camera to me at the moment, only because the BMPCC is on the other side of the desk. Oh wait, does the iPhone on charge count instead as the 2nd closest camera? :-P ), because I got it cheap on eBay as a potential future B cam to the NX1 which I was seriously considering buying as my next "main camera".

  33. IMO, FCPX is the best NLE out there for what I do. Ive been working professionally with Premiere and Avid for many years now and Im seriously starting to hate them. So fiddely and flat out dumb. And of course slow. Switching to FCPX is still the biggest leap forward in editing for me. But I remember the initial frustration. It all went away when I decided to learn IT instead of teaching it my way of working. And I have always been able to use LUTs in Final Cut. A funny note. This is the reason why I was the first guy to really try the XC-10 and LS300. True story. Ever since my epiphany in FXPX I started applying it to other stuff. When I see a product get super bashed by people based on specs or quick reviews my new way of thinking is: "That cant be. No way did a big company do all this research and spend money but some how didn't know it would be like this. Its more likely the users that are trying to force their ways and preferences onto the product instead of learning it and how it was intended to be used." So I tried the XC10, LS300, Leica T, Sigma cameras, etc. Had alot of fun with all of them. And now Canons new compact and the Leica CL looks very promising. A general rule for me is hate = interest (And anything the camera store says is the worst probably rocks. Their negative to positive ratio is unmatched.) BTW I also did a speed test once.

  34. Ahh come on Andrew! I made the switch to FCPX the day it came out and haven't looked back since. Its light years faster on slower Macs compared to Premiere and once you learn the workflow, I find it so much more intuitive. Im a huge fan of this program and it's put food on my table for over eight years now and Apple hasn't charged me a penny more than that initial $299 EIGHT FREAKING YEARS AGO! You hit that price in 6 months on Adobe. I have been Adobe"less" for a while now and love using Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo. I also use Apple Motion for my graphics work. I made this VFX 3d heavy music video all on my base model $900 MacBook Air using Apple Motion 5 and FCPX. Would have been impossible using Adobe with their flawed CUDA crap. Adobe basically just wants everyone on PC's. I understand your frustrations, but it took me a solid 3-4 months to re learn how to edit. Im grateful I did. Apple FCPX is seriously lightning fast compared to Premiere. I couldn't live with that.

  35. The rendering times with Neat video NR applied is very long, especially if you use it on 4K footage. With the built in NR function in Davinci Resolve studio you can have almost same results, but with much much faster then Neat. Everything else is possible with Resolve Lite. @Mattias Burling will you do a 2018 edition video about the 5D Raw with 4K? I loved your last one about the 5D Edit: currently im testing the built in NR on underexposed a6300 iso12800 SLOG2, and the results are insane...

  37. This is still experimental so i dont recommend yet to use it, first get used to the 14 bit processing. 10/12bit is tricky if you are not using MLVFS, the black levels are off, and the blacks going pink. You cannot force the DNG to show the picture profile, but there are possibilities where you can debayer in different color/log spaces. It doesent matter, trust me, BMDFilm is perfect starting point and you have the grading skill to get the most of it. If you have lack of knowledge in Davinci Resolve, or you want to use hyalinejim's (thanks again!!) beautiful Ektar 100 LUT then you should transform color spaces.

  38. Never had one, but I have read a few places where they say the imagine output looks nicer. MX has lager Sensor and 16 bit instead of 12 bit. I would not pay much for the original one. But I have seen a few for less than a 1000 bucks body only. Hell of a good way to learn good Pro video camera basics. This is a nice list for comparing older Cine cameras. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_large_sensor_interchangeable-lens_video_cameras

    NX2 rumors

You know when Samsung exited the ILC market, I thought it was a precursor to teaming up with either Nikon or Canon. In my view Sony enjoys a competitive advantage in cameras because it is an electronics company in a business where cameras are rapidly turning into electronics products (a bit like telephones). And Samsung has shown (and certainly has the tech) that it is the one company that can easily out Sony, Sony. I still think that say a Samsung/Nikon partnership makes so much sense. Samsung would bring Nikon all the bleeding edge sensor, sensor af, processing and Nikon would bring its optics, camera infrastructure and commitment. The NX1 showed that even with the best tech in the world, Samsung couldnt make a meaningful (and especially meaningful to a company as large as Samsung) dent in the market.

  40. I was a hard Apple fan for many years. Worked with mac from 1997 to 2014. The spanish financial crisis make that it was impossible to me to assume the costs of constant updates of software and to buy a new MacPro. I use a MacPro 3.1, from 2008, with 10 Gb of ram and a SSD. It was very difficult to work with HD video under Mac OS. FCPX don't worked with my mac because the graphic card was not supported. So i tried Linux. I installed more than 10 distributions and finally use Manjaro Budgie. My old Mac now flies. I can work with a good speed in 1080 and can also work with 4K (this with proxies). For video i use Lightworks (with Pro license) and Kdenlive. All my hardware works well and i experienced very few glitches. For my work i don't need Adobe, so i can use free software and a few propietary (Lightworks for video and Silkypix for raw photo files). My next computer can be a pc, but running Linux.

  41. In the article, it says that paramount did a couple of test screenings and found it to be too intellectual.... Which explains a lot.... I remember being in a second year psych. course in University back in the early 2000s.... And the professor asked a question, can't remember the actual question or what prompted him to say this.... But I remember it almost on a consistent basis.... He said, "You are technically smarter than 85% of the population." Which made me think... It is true on some respects, you need to get the top grades (85% or more) to get into University.... But, is this true in respects to everybody.... I'm starting to believe it is.... I've been running into a lot of them too, and Im sure some of you guys have too.... Examples: Some cashier that can't do basic math, a barrista that can't get a simple order right. Ever get a time when you specifically say... "No mayo" or something similar and you repeat it a couple of times too, and they say "yes, yes.... No mayo..." And the sandwich comes back with Mayo. Then you look at the sandwich and ask what the hell is this.... And she is looking at you weirdly... This has been happening to me on the regular. And, I generally go when it's not that busy cause you don't want to hurt their pea brains with small requests like this amongst all the other requests. I know.... The above sounds a bit petty, especially if you've never experienced it yet. But, if you experience it on the regular... I, especially, try to avoid confrontation too... I completely try to avoid the dumb peeps... I always say, these people work here for a reason. Going back to this movie, if it's only going to appeal to the top 15 percenters.... Then I too would choose those that know how to subscribe and use Netflix.

  44. Yesterday I received mine and i did a quick & dirty comparison: I am quite pleased but I need to do some outdoor shots this weekend. The filter looks a bit like leica glow without loosinh sharpness however. I find a bit more difficult to focus without an EVF on my GM1 - maybe i need to upgrade to GM5 :)

  45. So I bit the bullet over the week and bought the filter. From what I had read the filters work by spreading the light around the image, which is different to simply using a low contrast lens I think. And besides that, I don't want to add another lens to my collection when I already have three superb ones. I started with Ultra Contrast 3. It had good effect but I thought I'd go further so this morning I received the #5. The filters have an immediate effect of making the image look way more filmic. The reason for this is that really do spread the light around the image - but it's not so simple. They take in more ambient light and thus ambient colour. The result is that you get a much more balanced picture in terms of colour and tonality. These filters really are something magical. I have been shooting a fair bit with them over the past few days and will be putting together a video, but for now here's a few images: No filter, Standard iDynamic: With FilmConvert: Tiffen Ultra Contrast #5 (no iDynamic): With FilmConvert and some additional saturation. Each filter costs just over £100 for the 77mm sizes. I do recommend getting the strongest one (the #5). After further consideration I think the #3 is a better choice because the #5 washes out darker midtones too readily.
