  1. Thank you Dave. Canon really does need to be called out for being the laziest camera company on the market. Like you, I am a long time Canon owner, and love my 1DC. Over the years I have owned the c300, c100, xc10 and various 5D iterations. I spent huge amounts of money trying to chase Canon's differentiation strategy...this camera for stills, this one for good video, this one for compact portability, etc. When in truth all I wanted was a Sony A7r/s or GH5 with Canon color (and I have owned Sony, Samsung and Olympus as well). No more. I am done with Canon. I am tired of a company that so aggressively handicaps its products...5D IV's crop and no IBIS, fixed screen, 6D Mark II's 1080p (forget 4k) which is more like 720p and lack of dynamic range, the C200's lack of middle ground codec below RAW at that price point. I still love my 1DC, but it is 2018 and I want good 4k with IBIS, good video focus, touch screen and a smaller form factor. Sony, Panasonic and Olympus actually seem like they try to make good products for their customers, I just don't like their color science (I know others feel differently and they are getting better). I have been slowly selling off my Canon gear. If the Fuji XH1 is what it is rumored to be I am pretty sure I will finally have the camera I want: 4k, log, IBIS, good focus, touch screen, reasonable form factor and great color science. I could wait for the rumored mirrorless option from Canon, but I think its safe to assume with metaphysical certitude that Canon will do something to handicap the camera (weak codec, no ibis, weird lens adapter for EF...something). That is their thing, it is in the very DNA of the company at this point. I am sure they will remain #1 in sales, but they won't be doing it with my money anymore. I will give it to a company that is actually trying to compete and not just rest on the halo of their brand from previous eras. I am definitely going to be tracking the XH1 announcement next week.

  2. After an extensive test in Alaska...I found that the Canon 6D Mkii SUCKS BALLS! Casey Neistat and Peter McKinnon are SO wrong. This camera is total garbage. I can't believe Canon would even release a camera like this with the price being what it is. Totally unacceptable. No ALL-I, worse ISO performance than 80D, No headphone jack. Its a total POS. Let me know your thoughts.

  3. https://www.eoshd.com/2018/02/fuji-x-h1-cinema-4k-200mbit-hybrid-camera-ibis-rival-gh5/ A Fuji "A6500" basically, but in a bigger body. However it does have Fuji's colour science and ergonomics. And the A6500 was already pretty cool. Then there are the lenses - they're better as well. I think it's not to be sniffed at... But it falls short of the GH5 and GH5S in terms of overall feature-set and codec. Should have had 10bit.

    NX2 rumors

If we want to fantasize and speculate on the post appeared on the site mirrorlessrumors, we can say that it is very convincing, Samsung must develop new technologies to be always technologically advanced, even if these products should never go into production. The construction of a prototype serves to test the capabilities of their products, this has nothing senseless and personally does not surprise me at all. I agree that the marketing of the photo department of Samsung is totally wrong, communication with customers was very disappointing, but it is also true that the quality / price ratio of the NX1 and NX500 was the best ever, also it is to be appreciated that the Samsung It has never charged extra costs for major firmware updates like the professional DR color profile. If tomorrow Samsung officially announced that it is building the NX2 I would be the happiest person in the world. I bought the NX1 in 2015, three years to replace a camera is a very reasonable time frame, I would think poor those who buy Sony and Panasonic, not even have time to unpack their new camera that after six months is already old !! My humble opinion is that Samsung must continue to build cameras to be present in the photographic industry, of course Samsung knows that this involves the need to reorganize the work team, the technical staff must be numerically reduced and the work must be well organized to optimize expenses, Samsung has everything ready to make the leap in quality and move on to the professional video industry. In conclusion, Samsung produces every type of electronic product, look at home you will certainly have at least three products with Samsung brand, so why close only the photographic department precluding a secure businness, having the necessary professional potential?

  6. Paramount don't think Ex-Machina director's next film, starring Natalie Portman will make any money so they scrapped the cinema release and dumped it for cheap on Netflix's porch like an abandoned baby. https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2018/01/annihilation-paramount-netflix/551810/?utm_source=atlfb These execs are going to be the death of cinema. Good thing is we have great TVs now and HDR Alex Garland is one of the most talented directors and writers working today, loved Ex Machina and it was a huge hit. Intelligent sci-fi is in. Black Mirror on Netflix is popular. Arrival was a hit. Why not this? Apparently Annihilation is a direct to video B-movie in the eyes of these Paramount idiots whose summer schedule consists of a Transformers spin-off called Bumblebee and another Mission Impossible... and practically nothing else.

  7. After two days and about 10 flights, here are my first impressions: >>> THE GOOD - Small and light, about the size a of a mirrorless camera or small APSC once folded. The gimbal design is much better than the Mavic Pro. Less exposed in case of crash and without shitty rubber band attachment. - The gimbal is very stable and there is little amount of horizon/IMU drift. The wider focal (24mm) also helps. Even in windy condition (tested up to 16mph) the video looks very smooth and stable. - The 100mbps bitrate makes a big difference in terms of grading and image artifact. 4k becomes manageable. However I noticed some noise in the shadow, even at 100 ISO but I need to check that more carefully and see what exposure and image settings perform best with this camera. - The drone is very fast and agile in Sport mode (I reached 40mph ground/GPS speed with no wind). It’s very slow to descend in regular mode (1.5 m/s). Switch to Sport mode to increase the descent rate (up to 3 m/s). - Flight time is about 15-16 minutes to 20% battery in normal flight mode. So about 17-18 min to drain it down to the minimum (by this time it will enter in RTH mode) >>> THE BAD - The Wifi mode instead of Lightbridge or OcuSync is bad. The radio quality and range are horrible, it’s ok in remote area free of any RF interference but as soon as you are in sub-urban area (whether in 2.4 or 5.8GHz band) the video starts getting bad at 1000 feet or so. Loosing signal at 2000 feet. Using a cheap “range extender” (dish that focus the signal to give higher gain) improves the situation (better video and 20-30% more range) but it's still bad. TIP: You will loose video signal before RC control and telemetry, turn 90 degrees to position the antenna on the skids facing you, it helps to regain video (then you can fly back sideway with the roll axis until you regain better signal). The problem is not only the range but the lag of the image. Note that modern phones and tablet perform better. Older one will generate more lag (lack of processing power) - There is no EV indication on the screen anymore (perhaps I missed it in the options) but you can enable the “overexposure” indicator, basically zebra. You can also assign one button to lock the exposure. - There is no Log curve, only Cinelike-D but you can adjust the picture settings (sharpness, contrast, saturation) to get a "log-like" custom profile. - Controller: same as the Spark. The second top wheel is missing so forget about this one to change the shutter speed, you’ll have to tap it on the screen. Tablets won’t fit on the controller and the side grip are still too small. Only fits very slim smartphones without their protective cases. - As you can expect on this type of tiny sensor, sensitivity and low light capabilities are very limited. The image starts to degrade at ISO 200-400 depending on the exposure.

  9. Loads of people use SLOG on 8bit codecs... even the Canon C200 is 8bit only with CLOG. Its not one battery per 20 mins. Its just a record time limit for each continuous recording

  10. But is there an accessory that gives the GH5 manual controls, a proper tilt screen, bigger sensor and X-Trans... If power consumption is important then this might not be the camera for you. For me its somewhere in the bottom of a long list of things I look for in a camera.

  11. So I must start using still cameras as video cameras and not voice my opinion or go around calling people I don't know "frauds" for not agreeing with me? I have a third option I want to run by you. What if I use what ever I feel like and dont judge others for having other preferences? That way I can focus on what I actually know, my needs and preferences. And not waste energy arguing about others needs and preferences which I just like you know absolutely nothing about

  12. It's true the video quality on this thing is laughable and yet they are marketing it towards the YouTube crowd. Reminds me of the episode of the IT crowd where Jen was tricked into showing the internet-in-a-box to shareholders... But because they were fucking clueless too, they lapped it up!

  13. Higher bitrate, Flog internal, DCI, 120fps, better controls, bigger grip, touchscreen, high spec EVF - they're making great strides considering its only been a little more than a year and a half since 4k first appeared in a Fuji body. And they're finally releasing the MK Cine lenses in X-mount. Chris

    NX2 rumors

Who needs an NX2, when Fuji has a new video-centric camera that can do 6 minutes of 100 frames and cropped 4K? And 20 minutes of 1080 video!

  15. Since we first had S-LOG and advanced Cine picture profiles from Sony there has been a restriction that they can't be enabled in Silent Mode, which uses an electronic shutter. This got me thinking - the A9 makes a big deal about it's electronic shutter - and low and behold has no picture profiles. Do you think Sony left them out as they conflict with the electronic shutter somehow - maybe they were afraid sports photographers would be confused about why their max FPS just dropped from 20fps to 5fps, because they had PP1 selected. I think that's it. Of course, this is a stupid decision by Sony. First basic solution I just plucked out of my ass...make the damn profiles work with an electronic shutter! How hard can it be! Second basic answer... make the picture profiles work only when video mode is selected on the mode dial. Avoids confusion. Third point is this - how can Sony have the BEST full frame 4K picture, even more detailed than the A6500 on their FLAGSHIP and MOST EXPENSIVE camera and NOT put S-LOG or Hybrid LOG Gamma on it?! The A7R III and D850 full frame 4K both fall short of the resolution and almost zero-moire achieved by the A9. So they have the most capable full frame mirrorless camera on the market for shooting 4K... with the least number of picture profile options. Well done Sony! Thing is getting down to £3k used now, so actually cheaper than the A7R III with all the same nice things, but better 4K, bigger buffer, extra dial, faster continuous shooting, better electronic shutter and yet... no S-LOG!

  16. @Andrew Reid if you want to fade to black, you need some black to fade to. Snap the cursor to the beginning/end of your clip and hit Alt-W. That drops in a slug. Now you can Cmd-T (or drag any transition) onto your clip and it will transition to black. Simples. You have to stop thinking of the timeline as a static, empty canvas. It's more like a sculpture in space. The magnetic timeline is made up only of the elements you add and their interrelationships.

  17. The only reason I am not buying the A9, is the lack of picture profiles. The only reason I am not buying the A7rIII, is that I am hoping A7sIII has the same electronic shutter as A9. In the end, Sony will get less of my money. Makes no sense.

  20. Well Sony and Fuji's engineers clearly disagree. It works in 8bit. Clear advantage over Rec.709 colour profiles. I've used it and seen the difference for myself. It isn't a 10bit-only colour space. S-Gamut is also a wide colour space, and that can be compressed to 8bit as well.

  21. I got the Air for an incoming job, I need to travel and it will be my "B cam". For practical reasons, I can't take two P4P on this trip. I agree with the 100mbps, that's the minimum today for 4k video.
    1 point
  22. Didn't realize you had one. Me too. So what made you get the Air? I don't think I can ever use a drone anymore without at least the 100Mbps h.265... It's game-changing.

  23. Spec and features wise its way ahead of the GH5 for stills and close enough in video. At least for my needs. But time will tell, wont know anything until I have tried it. Panasonic have nice video but in the stills department they are always playing catch up. Olympus is ahead imo. Thats not what it means. You are reading it wrong.
    1 point
  24. Kind of a straw man argument, don't you think? You have to pay for Vlog, which brings the GH5 to about the same price as the XH1 with the grip - at least in the US. And unless you only shoot with a single battery for the GH5 for all of eternity - which seems unlikely - you're still spending roughly the same amount of cash once you add Panasonic batteries to the mix. So do you want 10-bit and 60p with the GH5, or a larger sensor, much better hybrid AF, cleaner files at higher ISO's, much better stills, better color profiles and more DR from Fuji? If you shoot stills and video, the Fuji is a much better choice IMO. YMMV. Its good to have options.

    CANON 6D MKII SUCKS!!!

I'll admit at the Indian Wedding I was filming tonight I was kinda wishing I had a C300 with DPAF rather than my F3 with a Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 Nikon F mount lens. Was tough initially! But with practice it got easy, I'm probably also rather rusty having not done weddings in a while since last season (and even then I only did a few). Having a better monitor would have helped too! I was just using the LCD on the F3 itself.

    CANON 6D MKII SUCKS!!!

Your original comment was "I always have a hard time saying a stills camera sucks just because its not the best video camera in the world. If video is that important I use a video dedicated camera." The essence of this, the whole forum here, and posts by @Andrew Reid are exactly about those cameras. I am truly surprised that you haven't noticed that. Mostly we care about video in smaller, relatively cheaper, or not, hybrid cameras - cameras that a big, or even the biggest proportion of its life will shoot video, etc There are unlimited photo-centric forums around, I do post on a couple, because photography is my hobby, but here, I mainly come for the video aspect of things. My comment was sarcastic, because the famous people on the original post of the OP, are using this said camera for video, so it is only fair that we can review the video performance. No one judged anything, but you, the ability of us to use "photo" cameras for video, and review them for the ability, or not, to shoot adequate video for our needs. I do like cameras to be 50/50, that is why I staying NX. I do use dedicated video cameras with bigger projects and I love them, my next buy I want to be one (hopefully a C100mkIII or FS5mklI). Your opinion is well respected and heard all the time, no need for passive-aggressive statements. Peace.

  27. Worse DR isn't exactly true. It depends on the ISO. Again, right tool for the job. Price is relative. A photographer that can't get great shots with this camera should focus on skills, not gear. And what the DSLR video thing is about isnt relevant. A still camera manufacturer cant take responsibility for what a few people would like to use their cameras for. 99% of their customers thinks the video is adequate for what they do. And most of them never touch it. This is a stills camera. And therefore I cant say it sucks just because the video isn't better than an FS7. But I've said this already. Ps. A dedicated video camera is smaller, not bigger.

  28. Seems like a great camera. For me personally a Fuji is a usable stills option in all scenarios I can think of. It rivals FF. Ive shot sports, portraits, doc, you name it with a X-Pro2 or X-T20. So the stills department is in the bag. Not as a compromise but top notch imo. If the intended usage of video is 50% or lower it is a great camera and I would probably love it. For something like 70% video I guess a GH5 would make more sense but anything higher than that and I rather have two cameras, one dedicated for video. But that's just me.

  31. Canon AF adapters are now out for Fuji. Plus Canon 17mm is not nearly as wide as a 16mm on a Fuji body either since the Fuji has less crop and 16mm is wider than 17mm. And how many high quality APS-c lenses does Canon have outside the excellent 17-55? Remind me which Canon APS-c body has IBIS? Shoots 4k? 120fps? Or even actual 1080p? But there's always DPAF, the 5d4's massive 4k crop and goofy file sizes.... Not trying to be a dick, but if you're talking APS-c, there's really no comparison. Fuji wins hands down.

  34. True! I also said that they have "decency"! Fuji is a well respected company with a lot of passionate people working there. I follow them closely and always read interviews and their opinions. They have the will, they just don't have the resources. Unfortunately for Fuji, in this race there are other horses too, and no one will wait for them to reach 2018 specs, a couple of years later. Edit: I would buy this instead of the a6500 any day. That's not even close in my opinion.

  37. Thanks for the write-up. I'd be interested in seeing some footage if you have any. You've got a P3P, right? Which do you think you'll be flying more often? If anyone cares, my prediction, based on the Mavic Air: I think the Mavic Pro 2 is going to be everything the P4P is, maybe even with longer flight time (and of course it will fold), but they're going to leave out h.265 and variable aperture. Idk about P5P but I'd say 35 minute flight time and 4K60 will finally be h.265.

    NX2 rumors

@Trek of Joy This is exactly what we are saying, Samsung needs a prototype camera - or a limited edition one - to show case their sensors. Samsung is one or two new fabs away from making a dent on Sony's sensor sales. Most of Samsung's experimental sensors (I used to follow them) were best in industry, but Samsung had neither the capability to mass produce (even for their phones are buying Sony sensors), or Japanese companies didn't buy from them. Sony's biggest earner is the adoption of 3-5 cameras on each phone (3-5 sensors), biggest buyers were Apple and Xiaomi, with Sony have 42% of the whole sensor industry and in general this (current fiscal year) is the best Sony year since 1998. With all the good ones, I have to add that "Sony has made thousands of job cuts and asset sales, and focused on gaming and image sensors to drive the turnaround of its business after years of losses." 228 billion Yen for sensors. 76 billion Yen from Consumer Electronics, mainly boosted by new 4K TVs. 55 billion Yen in Games and gaming, increase on PS4/PS4pro sales. 244 billion Yen in Films, mainly because of the new Spiderman(?!wtf?!) 94 billion Yen in music, because of Spotify partnership and the game Fate/Grand order (mobile games belong to the Music division for some reason). We are talking about something like 7 billion $. On the other hand, Samsung is the top manufacturer of components, memory chips, smarthphones, television sets, and on a moderate year for them, their fiscal year revenue was 220 billion $, with operating profit 50 billion $. The next fiscal year will see a big growth in both revenue and profit for various reasons (too much to mentioned all of them here!). "In 2018, Samsung will provide 8nm and 11nm processes to meet customers’ needs and start a risk production of 7-nano. In addition, we will increase its mass production capabilities at the new S3 and S4 lines for various products including mobile processors and image sensors." People in general underestimate the power of Samsung. Most of the camera manufacturers (except Canon and Sony) could be plain bought out by Samsung every day of the week, including weekends.

  43. @webrunner5 I don't own a Fujifilm camera (mainly because they don't offer dedicated video cameras at the moment), but I worked some days with a X-T2 and compared with my Sony and Nikon hybrid cameras. More than that, end of 2017 I've done some polls on German language Social Media sites to find out more about colour preferences of my audience. The results were for me - as a NON-Fuji-owner - quite astonishing: About 64% of the 16-25 years old spectators say, thy prefer Fuji-Colors (not graded, out of the camera color science) by far more than Nikon, Sony or even Canon. Period. The 25-40 years old German spectators prefer mostly more neutral / cool colors out of a Sony or Nikon. Then Fuji, and Canon is on last place (lol)... The 50-65 years old spectators prefer with 58% the Fuji color science... Plus exceptional build quality + a very good customer care and (repair) service (speaking for Germany) + a nice and affordable lens collection. Fujifilm is miles ahead from the crappy Sony hybrid playticky cameras image capturing devices - which I own and shoot (mainly because of their dedicated video cameras offerings and insane low light capabilities of their A7R / A7S xyz line). Last but not least: It's a pleasure (for me) to shoot a X-T2. Unlike holding the Sony hybrid shit in my hands...But as I need their dedicated video devices and beeing in the Sony lens universe, I will have to keep shooting crappy Sony hybrids...

  45. I do! I will be selling it as soon as I finish building the website (which is taking a little longer than I hoped). Some key differences between my design and the other guy's version: Mine isn't made from ridiculous red 3D-printed plastic. The housing is made from anodized black 6061 machined aluminum that I had commissioned. I disassembled, degreased, and re-greased the helicoid with superior lubricant. My mod includes my custom-built dual-bracket 15mm rail support clamp. My mod doesn't require re-alignment when switching lenses. I don't cut corners or try to hide anything. I make no secret that this mod wouldn't have been possible without the help from the good people on the EOSHD forums. I make no secret that you can build this mod yourself (you can read my development thread here). My mod is a turnkey solution - it doesn't require an overpriced, threadless 3D-printed lens clamp. My mod will be selling for less than his. Side note: Like Carlo, I've also found John Barlow (Rectilux) very helpful and quick to respond.

  46. Pentax 645 is shit in this day and age. Film is dead people! There is Phase One, Hassy, Fuji and Pentax in that order for MF cameras. And that is the order of how good they are also. Pentax is last just like in the DSLR market. And all those cameras in the Camera Store test all had the same disadvantage like people on here like to call it. Well guess what Pentax sucked balls. It was last. Good God the iPhone beat it in a few shots. Give me a break about how good it is. X-Tran is the worse thing they ever came up with. Their normal Bayer Sensors cameras look better than the wonky colors on the X-Trans ones. They are clown colors, not natural looking like a Canon or Nikon. Your test included a Sigma Quattro, probably the worse camera Ever made for colors and 1 shot a minute speed. By the way I like them. A Leica that well cost more than the rest of them combined, and has not been known for the best digital colors, B&W well yeah, and a Fuji. No wonder the GR won! All those cameras are the LAST ones I would wont if I Had to own one. They are all Old tech on the end of their lives as a camera company. Fuji Might survive. Only one. Hell most of those cameras don't even do video. Why the hell would I want a damn stills camera at all, let alone one that doesn't do video, or if it does, like the Fuji does, pretty piss poor video at that. You guys act like you are 90 years old living in 1970. If I want a stills camera it will say Canon or Nikon on it. Hell a iPhone 10 and a Samsung Note 8 make all those cameras LOOK like they Are from 1970. Like I have said before, there are some funny people on here. ehh this is 2018, repeat after me, 2018, 2018. You guys ought to get together and open a Antique shop!

  47. I wish they added 4K60, but yeah, probably not gonna happen. I also wish for 10bit, internally or externally. I'm shooting F-Log with the X-T2 and with 8bit it leaves some to be desired. And I'm not sure if it's just my X-T2 or a general issue, but the camera gets hot relatively fast when you use HDMI out. And thermal noise appears after a few minutes at ISO 6400 and above, which you won't see when you only record internally. Oh and it would be great to have waveforms or rgb parade in video mode. And adjustable zebras.

  48. They scrapped cinema release except in the 2 huge markets of USA and China. Looking fwd to this film. The score used in the trailer was a hook.

  49. That’s because studio heads were former producers that loved movies. Now they’re run by Harvard Business School graduates that look at the movie business as if it were any other widget.

  50. If it's *just* about money, if the only votes that count are those of the shareholders, this industry is doomed. Applicable to everything. If we are measured by by the degree we can be exploited, our kidneys will be sold and the rest becomes soap. Watch The Cooler. The old casino mafia ruled this frivole business with cruelty - and passion. Then the bankers appeared and took over. And the world turned to shit.
