I'd definitely try to find an S that fits your budget. Over the A7, the A7S will have a bunch of extras like 50Mbps XAVC-S, 4K out over hdmi, 120fps @720p (1.5x crop), and of course the god-like ISO performance. It really is one of the cleanest images at base ISO anywhere. I may never sell mine.1 point -

Right of course no camera will make a shitty filmmaker better. That’s why for every good example of a camera on YouTube you see a ton of bland/generic/shitty reels of footage. It really depends on your workflow/what you want/shooting style etc. If you have your heart set on that camera then get it! Shoot it. With the quality of camera bodies available to us my money is going more toward lenses/lighting these days. But yeah man get whatever you want and use it with all its unique quirks/pros/cons.1 point -

FWIW, I'm aware of the company you're doing this for. Although I'm sure they appreciate the shooters they "hire" going the extra mile to do the best they can, you're over thinking it. However, if your using their platform to cut your teeth and develop a skill set for future career work, then by all means, go at it with that ulterior motive. ...but don't think that they're all that concerned about quality at their price point...and they'd admit as much. And, even though it's tempting because you're doing something to get paid, never consider that level of pay "professional."1 point -

Panasonic GX9
John Matthews reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
Panasonic's nomenclature has bit them on the arse with this I think. All of the previews I'm seeing of it are referencing the GX8 rather than the GX80/85. Its a better GX80/85 for sure but if I'd been holding off buying one of those waiting for this then I'm not sure I wouldn't be at the shop looking for end of line stock and put the £250 saving towards lenses.1 point -
I'd have been really excited by this announcement last year but my X-T2 experiment has by and large wound down now in terms of it being a viable complete replacement system for my stills work so I'm probably about to walk out of the same door as a lot of people will be walking in with regard to Fuji. And I think this will get a lot more people through their door to be honest. Curious to know whether they'll do an X-H10 version a few months down the track in the X-T1/X-T2 to X-T10/X-T20 tradition. That one would probably get me back in.1 point

Its the distillation of my hardware Panasonic controller experiments from last year. Self contained, internal battery, pocketable, magnetic base for mounting. It acts as the central interface to the camera so can be used standalone to change settings or as the middleman to pass on commands from more ergonomic controllers for focus and aperture control etc. And it actually sort of kind of works as well.1 point

Nothing to write home about. At least not for the 100 series (which is what people usually mean when they say "G3", or now "G4"). Some improvements with the 500 series, but at their higher price point I think a person should just seriously think about Lectrosonics/Wisycom/Zaxcom/AudioLtd/etc instead. Often people seem to not have a clue at the true value of items (leading to prices waaaaaaay too high, but also prices waaaaaaay too low!). I've paid prices kinda similar to that myself in the past for wireless. Sometimes you get lucky! ;-) But do double read the auction, and inspect the pictures carefully.1 point

In this case, Canon gave him money and the camera. I'm just curious how you managed to miss so many shots; my experience for situations using AF-S is that the Panasonics are very good. I used a GH3 for a couple of events (not my type of photography even) and it acquitted itself very well.1 point

I didn't say the GH5 was bad, it's just not as great for still photography, what is there not to understand in the listed issues I had with it? My very first wedding I shot was with a T1i and although I got the job done with it there were drawbacks, I later got a 5DIII and it served all my photography needs perfectly. One can very well build a photography career from using a GH5, but it just didn't suite my personal needs in the event photography setting. I still got nearly 2000 usable photos, but I also had many missed shots, that's not acceptable to me. But I still LOVE the GH5 for video, and that's what most other people talk about here, NOT about it's photography side, I was disappointed in the camera not living up to its potential as a true hybrid camera that can do both photography and video well (don't we all want the perfect hybrid). We're all free to use what we want, you can go ahead and use an iPhone for photo/video work and if you get the job done then great!1 point -

Killing the GX8 and its potential upgrade makes a lot of sense. The camera market is shrinking. Panasonic don't need a pro and enthusiast DSLR style body, a pro and enthusiast rangefinder, pro and enthusiast compacts, and now specialty offshoots of the GH line as well. It's overkill. I don't think the GX8 sold well, and if the G9 really is replacing the G85 as has been rumoured, they need to focus something on the lower end of the market. Pushing a few models that each have a specific section of the market in mind makes way more sense than releasing a whole bunch that trample on each other's intended demographic. Makes it harder to market too.1 point

Mark Romero 2 reacted to EthanAlexander for a topic
@Mark Romero 2 5D3 raw is best used for passion projects with long turn-arounds. The workflow is time consuming and the storage requirements are super high. You also won't get much more dynamic range over h.264. On a sensor level we're talking 11.7 stops max vs 14.5 on your D750. If you're shooting at ISO 1600 or more though they're all similar in dynamic range:1 point -
This is a conspiracy by storage makers to sell us more hard drives or other storage solutions I think Red needs to do this. You can see the writing on the wall. Sony 4k or Nikon 4k or Canon 4k small bodies, with IBIS and AF will take over the market. How long before we're talking about Sony 4k 120P? remember a 120P 4K camera can theoretically combine two images at different exposures giving you a 60P but with a Arri level of highlight rolloff. So the reason you see Red is doing mobile or doing a consumer-style 8K video, is because THEY HAVE TO, or they will be out of business. They can do a 8K consumer video camera and at the same time still do a pro-level camera with all the XLR, etc. connection. But have much higher margins on the pro camera and distribute their R&D cost with their consumer stuff.1 point

Dynamic Range of ML RAW vs h.264 / h.265 Cameras?
Mark Romero 2 reacted to HockeyFan12 for a topic
Unless you have chroma clipping or are inept at setting white balance or dealing with a camera with poor white balance inherently (looking at Sonys, here) mixed lighting is difficult to work with in general. The Alexa handles it best, even in ProRes, so it's not necessarily about RAW. (Fwiw I agree about dynamic range, the 5D Mark III has less than the Sonys, but better tonality.) The high end $100k stills camera guys I know use strobes and heavily light their real estate work. For video it's not so easy but I think (I could be totally off base here) the ultimate solution to get great quality is to bring color correct fixtures and gels with you to swap out with what's there. Lots of LEDs or kinoflo bulbs to swap, maybe. Really really cheap to buy, but not always possible of course.1 point -

@Andrew Benton This is exactly the argument @Mattias Burling did with the T3i, but on the other way! If one can make a professional videography career out of a T3i (is this the 600?) in 2018, then surely one can make a photography one with the GH5! That noone of these cameras are the appropriate tool for the jobs you have suggested, T3i for video, and GH5 for photography hasn't passed through your minds? In the end, I thought we all here agree that anyone can use whatever for his own pleasure and work. I do not understand what is so bad about a GH5, while a T3i is so special.1 point

Depends what you're using them for. For documentary production... you're right 8-bit is totally workable. But for anything "cinematic", anything with VFX... ect. Yes, all those cameras are crap. And trust me, I used to think people like me were a**hole trollers... I used to roll my eyes at all that "client-facing" or "professional" talk... but damn, I was wrong. I had to eat my words when I started working on some of these productions. Sometimes these people want a crazy stylized look to the footage... but a certain paint, or fabric, whatever, needs to be isolated and colored to advertised specifications... and the image cannot lose fidelity. You simply cannot grade 4:2:0 8-bit footage in any real sense or use it for VFX (where I mainly work). I've tried... I've had colorists try... it always ruins the image and cannot be presented outside of "crash-cam" or "spectator" footage. But to say something somewhat constructive... I will say the detail looks very good in that video though. I've been wanting to get a GH5 or GH5s... and I just cannot find a video that looks like it even resolves a 2K image. I guess I had never looked at the footage that closely... but something is ruining the images from those cams... even the "camera originals" people offer for download. There must be heavy noise-processing that cannot be turned down all the way. Everything has that "digital-gause" that ruins fine details and textures. Even the older Blackmagic 2.5k camera appears to resolve more detail than the GH5. So, anyways... the Fuji does look allot better in this department!1 point -
NX2 rumors
Nicholson Ruiz reacted to GiM_6x for a topic
It is clear that Samsung show its muscles. At least from time to time. It is clear that Samsung is not much interested in a photo/movie CAMERA industry as we think it should be - since he has nobody to compete with ( !!! ), but this is where he show what he can really do, since as always a "regular" photo camera is something more serious compared with a smartphone camera. Not that its smartphones cameras are not the best in the smartphone industry. I am sure these specs, what we call right now NX2, will materialise in a real camera, but is not necessary to be produced and distributed as we want or believe it should be, it may be a limited edition as NX1, it may be a super-limited edition - not public - as for R&D show to prove its capabilities (or just its toys as someone said), it is clear politics, and not the last to show that NX line is not dead - but is not the kind of company as Canon/Nikon/Sony who make few cameras each year with so little increase in specs that only the "professional line" clients will follows each step. I do like / love this at Samsung, every few years a real new product, some real increase in performances, for real photo lovers. I bought NX1 last year + 16-50.S, not for Samsung name/line (also I believe in this name), but for NX1 specs/performance/price, and I am not a photo pro, the money invested are a sort of loss for me, but I will enjoy the photos/movies I did and will do with this camera. I will ad one-two lense(s), Samsung will repair if needed (lets hope not!), and since I am an older photo sinner (yeah, 6x), for an NX2 (or whatever the name) I can trade my wife (yes, I know, Samsung will not like / want her ), but at least I can try :-).1 point -
NX2 rumors
Nicholson Ruiz reacted to lucabutera for a topic
If we want to fantasize and speculate on the post appeared on the site mirrorlessrumors, we can say that it is very convincing, Samsung must develop new technologies to be always technologically advanced, even if these products should never go into production. The construction of a prototype serves to test the capabilities of their products, this has nothing senseless and personally does not surprise me at all. I agree that the marketing of the photo department of Samsung is totally wrong, communication with customers was very disappointing, but it is also true that the quality / price ratio of the NX1 and NX500 was the best ever, also it is to be appreciated that the Samsung It has never charged extra costs for major firmware updates like the professional DR color profile. If tomorrow Samsung officially announced that it is building the NX2 I would be the happiest person in the world. I bought the NX1 in 2015, three years to replace a camera is a very reasonable time frame, I would think poor those who buy Sony and Panasonic, not even have time to unpack their new camera that after six months is already old !! My humble opinion is that Samsung must continue to build cameras to be present in the photographic industry, of course Samsung knows that this involves the need to reorganize the work team, the technical staff must be numerically reduced and the work must be well organized to optimize expenses, Samsung has everything ready to make the leap in quality and move on to the professional video industry. In conclusion, Samsung produces every type of electronic product, look at home you will certainly have at least three products with Samsung brand, so why close only the photographic department precluding a secure businness, having the necessary professional potential?1 point -
NX2 rumors
Nicholson Ruiz reacted to lucabutera for a topic
When talking about the Samsung NX1 camera, in the comments you clearly distinguish 2 types of people: The pessimists and the optimists. 1) The pessimists are those who have never had an NX1 in their hands; 2) The optimists, that is, the enthusiasts who own an NX1 and are happy and satisfied, some of them sold the NX1 by switching to another camera but regrets the NX1. I do not want to speculate on the news of a possible NX2 (although I would have reason, considering that I worked a lot and lost time to support the NX system with the NXL speed booster), I just want to say to the defeatists who think it is not convenient for Samsung, that the camera market is niche, which in 2018 will drop an asteroid on the earth, etc ... Maybe Sony is crazy about investing in the photo market? Yet he took a lot of the market away from Canikon! Nobody knows the business dynamics of a giant like Samsung, sometimes certain products are produced for different reasons, to be present in that sector too, to show muscles, to satisfy customers, to experiment with superior technologies to be used in another sector such as that of the smartphone. Some time ago I hypothesized that after the release of Red Hydrogen on the phone market, Samsung could get a professional camera that was able to incite fear to the Red camera, this thought is not so crazy if you think about it. The Iphonenauti sect is difficult to erase but the sales of the Galaxy 9S could be annoyed because of the many guys who are passionate about photography and video that would buy a Red phone instead of a Samsung. Did Samsung expect double the NX1 camera sales? Well, just double the sale price and get a better result! I for the NX2 would spend twice as much as I paid the NX1 and buy the new Galaxy 9S, why? Simply because it knows how to do everything right, it is a small and light camera that never disappoints you. When Andrew says that Samsung is the only one who can do it, it also means that Samsung has cut many design costs derived from NX1, also has all the components that are used in other appliances. I think they should focus only on a high-end model, the NX2, the top of the class, no compromise, the best camera on the market with a single set of S lenses including the monstrous 300mm f2.8 ready and never marketed! A dream maybe but dreaming does not cost anything and then it is not so far from reality.1 point -

You can't sell a smartphone these days without 4k, let alone a product with the word cinema in it costing many dollars more. As soon as smartphones starting gaining 4k capabilities 1080 became old news as far as consumer perception. The new buzzword will be 8k soon. This is not a good trend, as most cinemas are still running 2k projectors and 4k televisions are still not widespread yet. We don't need more resolution, we need more dynamic range, cleaner sensors, and smaller acquisition and distribution footprints. Resolution is already at the tip between quality and diminishing return, there are other factors to innovate upon. As smartphones narrow the gap between portability, capability and quality, the markert is going to get real murky, and I question what affect this will have within the film industry. No one in their right mind is going to spend 40k when they can get what they need in a $2,000 or less package.1 point
