  1. If your already used to Gfilm. Put in the same settings and set the gamma and color mode to "Still". Been using that setting alot when I don't want to grade much. I've had more luck with the default Cine2 than Cine 4 myself. EDIT: Also drop saturation to +1, or the colors start clipping.

    Panasonic GX9

Good for you if you don't mind the crop. I was just comparing the two offerings from Panasonic. I paid 599 Euros for my GX80 when it came out. I've seen it new for as low as 20% off, but I'd be surprised to see it for 50% off (link?). At $999 with the 12-60 Panasonic lens (too bad they didn't match it with the 20mm or even the 14mm and make it less expensive), the GX9 isn't as good of a deal IMO, unless the GX7's usability features were really important to you. The Panasonic 12-60 is too big of a lens for this camera IMO; it's a much better match for the G7, G8, G9, GH4, etc..

  3. Never seen this product before, as it is a brand brand new product that isn't shipping yet. But as a Marantz it should be worth checking out. Has a low low price of US$399 2.4 GHz Digital Transmitter (like RodeLink, no need to worry about what frequencies are legal) All info on the top, which is nice. But perhaps my favorite feature: "Receiver Can Pair to Two Transmitters". Handy! Annoyingly the input is a 4 pin XLR, which doesn't match up with any transmitters I own currently. Unfortunately it is not shipping yet, and there are no reviews of it online, but it looks like a product to keep an eye on! https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1340330-REG/marantz_professional_pmd_750_2_4ghz_camera_mount_wireless.html

  4. I'd say Fuji is reacting pretty quickly considering this is only going to be their second serious attempt towards videographers on a hybrid camera and that they don't even have high-end pro video departments like Canon, Sony, Panasonic etc.. I'm particularly looking forward to DCI 4K & 2K at 200mbps (which btw is something even Sony's current flagship mirrorless aren't offering).

  5. There's no question that the technology is enabling a lot of people to make some very pretty looking stuff now. But if you dig into a bit, its debatable whether that actually translates into them being able to produce cohesive work for clients on time and on budget and dealing with all that that entails. You see stuff on Vimeo and YouTube that is pretty amazing but you often note of course that its a passion project about something or someone or somewhere that they have a particular feeling for. How they would fare when they're asked to bring that sort of vision and feeling to a corporate film about solvents is another matter. More people will be be fancying their chances as Its unquestionably easier to make images that look professional but I think its still quite a leap to get to the stage of being able to be produce that sort of level consistently where you can be considered to actually be a professional. Its definitely a case of many are called but few are chosen.

  6. Your skintones should not exposed higher then 60 IRE if you are using Cine4, otherwise it will be highly compressed, just like on your sample image. If you are using default metering you have to underexpose about 0,66-1 stop to get proper exposure

  7. Or maybe it grows like an organism. It was born ten years ago and isnt ready for the spot light until its sweet sixteen. I guess then it runs on batteries as well as water and a mixture of protein, fat and carbs. I wonder if its vegetarian?

  8. Imagine how much a premium brand's image would be harmed if a bunch of low budget idiots would start using them? I can just imagine the complaints already: "It has shit battery life! I had to buy these expensive V mount batteries, which didn't come with it in the box. Dodgy RED trying to upsell you on hidden costs!" "It sucks at low light when I'm shooting outdoors at night in the forest with my Canon 18-55mm kit lens!" "It broke my PC when I loaded these 8K files into my editor and it crashed!" "This dumb camera doesn't have a portrait selfie mode!" "The autofocus is hopeless, I wish had never ever brought this camera! I'm sending it back and buying a Canon Rebel" And so on and so on and so on the reviewers, commentators, social media, and forum posts would go on and on. Then of course would come the avalanche of dreadful awful looking footage shot with this new "premium" but affordable camera. Because their talent/knowledge/budget/experience isn't even 1% of what the camera is capable of. If this is allowed to carry on unchecked for too long, it would end up harming sales of their high end budget cameras as well! So while I wish Arri would make a $3K camera, I also totally understand the reasons why they wouldn't want to do that.

  9. Though, ironically, MEGADRIVE sounds exactly like something RED would call a £100 per gig SSD product And DREAMCAST is a fairly accurate description of some of their expected release date announcements.

  10. This is actually really impressive. Top work! How does the GH5 footage feel to grade once converted? I presume it wouldn't handle quite as nice as actual Alexa footage?

  11. If you liked the gh2 and gh5, why not go for a gx80 plus 12-60 kit lens, can be found for 650-700 in the eu. 4k does not interest you, but you can still misuse it to have really good full HD.

  12. I'm desperate to ask..... HOW? :-o Why? A Panasonic G80/G85 would probably be cheaper, and surely would be better for filming with. Lowlight with the Panasonic cameras is getting better with every generation. The G7 is better than the GH4 in lowlight. And now we have the GH5S! The new "king of lowlight" Plus with focal reducers or a T0.95 lens then you've nothing to worry about (as for "crop factors", ignore the F.U.D. from the competition! This is a total non issue) Here is that old GH2 again: And if you're a non-pro I reckon it is even more important to maximise your bang for buck if you're feeling the budget is tight. So that means secondhand Panasonic G7, or G80/G85 If you can only buy ONE lens then I'd say your budget is either way too low, or badly missallocated and you should shift some of the camera body budget over to the lens budget. (or look at cheaper lenses) This! Own a G6 myself, and the only thing the G6 loses is no live HDMI out :-/ https://www.eoshd.com/2013/07/panasonic-g6-review-the-gh2-redux/ So called "full frame" (i.e. 135 format) doesn't automatically mean better lowlight. I'd rather use a BMPCC with a 1" / S16 sensor in lowlight than a "full frame" 5DmkII!

  13. Well if he's getting into the making shit up business then he's picked the right company to do a joint venture with I think his goal of partnering up with RED and making a very, very affordable imaging system is easily within reach for him. What he'll still have to deal with though is it ending up being stupidly expensive again when RED insist on putting it inside a case forged from some rock that Elon Musk brings back from Mars complete with titanium fins and platinum exhaust pipes. They'll no doubt do two versions with different resolutions called SHOCK and AWE. You have to think that if its going to be truly affordable in the sense that we want it to be then its a collaboration that might not ultimately end up being in a RED branded product.

  14. Looks like I've come back to the forum at the right time. Is this offer still on as I quite fancy a GH5s. Do I just mail in the receipt or what?

  15. Talk is cheap. Red is not. And has never been. Remember 3k for $3K? This is not about inexpensive, high quality prosumer cameras for everyone. Nor is it about Foxconn getting into the camera game. What this is really about is RED getting into the expensive (read 8K video) telephone business. All the rest is hype and BS.

  18. PhotoMatch is an app, which can auto-create LUT by a given image, and in development right now is an image-adjustments module, with custom algorithms. I'm looking for some feedback from you. Do you like the image-adjustment algorithms better than the standard ones, used in just about any other software? What do you think about the color-matching option? You can run the app through just about any modern browser: https://kinoseed.com/ Here are some examples of what it does: Here's example of "temperature change" algorithm: Color-match algorithm:

  19. Tech moves fast. Basically I kinda think we'll have Alexa level IQ in consumer grade stuff in -give or take- 5 years. Can old dudes like me make worthwhile videos at career rate$ when EVERYBODY is making worthwhile videos for free? Wondering if and how I can differentiate myself enough from the horde to expect someone to pay me for stuff. Do I have the creative mojo for success -- since having tech-mojo is going to be (is) a mundane commodity. ...Wondering if legitimate work-for-hire might be a dead-end within the decade.

  23. I understand the fear, but luckily reliability, creativity, and being an easy-to-work-with person trump "free" in the long run. I've been slowly and steadily increasing my rate despite the barrier to entry getting lower and lower, and it's all because I focus on delivering more than just the video. Ever since the 5D2/7D/T2i got popular there have been clients unwilling to pay for videos, but those aren't the clients we want. Clients who are worth it will be looking for things like consistency and long track record, so as long as we keep working we'll always have that leg up on the new kids on the block. Having said that, we can't ever get complacent or sloppy or we'll get chewed up and spit out faster than you can say "vertical videos suck."

  24. Cine4 uses illegal values (0-255) and most programs do not recognize that correctly. Are you using the correct ranges? What color profile are you using? I have had a great experience with Cine/Pro modes with slight adjustments to the color depth. Also in the past, I had noticed differences in skin tones when contrast was adjusted between programs: By the way, like @Geoff CB I have also switched to Cine2 as well for most things

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

Thanks Juan; grading the Alexa seems especially silky to me. Perhaps its the ProRes I frame, the diffused 2k, uniformity of the bits, psychology, or some combination of the lot. The conversion is largely smooth and uniform, as a continuous transform of the space. The GH5 has quite a bit more detail than my Alexa C From what I can tell, it seems very similar, perhaps with a less green red. There are also the new clipping fixes like in GHa, though the rolloff remains sudden. GH5S support is the plan; Colby Moore will be sending me his GH5S to do the conversion with once I am done primary work on the new process

  26. Better yet. It literally is a little being that is learning how to paint a picture.... currently everything looks like finger paintings... eventually you get to choose creative styles like Van Gogh or Picasso. Can’t wait for the little guy to learn Orogamy so it throws out next level 3D projects :oD

Nah, I have a Sanken CS3e for a mythical future Sonosax ;-) An Aputure Deity is just there as an emergency back up. I'm sure I could afford a 633/664/etc if I really wanted to. Like I said, I otherwise live like Scrooge McDuck himself!

    Zoom F1 recorder

I was only comparing it to the zoom F1 or other compact recorders such as H1. If you don't need something this small or you don't want to go to F4 then I agree with you the Tascam is the best choice.

  29. Yeah, it was for a very simple live application and for Panasonic FZ2000s so I wasn't fussed about it recording and just wanted something small and cheap so this looked ideal until I actually saw it mounted to a camera. Attaching that to something like the FZ2000 would look a bit, well, you know

  30. Ditto drones. This is another point I should have made. The set of skills and expertise to manufacture and market high volume products is very different to the process of making and selling niche premium products. It would be a big risk trying to switch over from one area to another. (or you could just do a Hasselblad and simply stick your name onto an existing product) Partnering with another company does substantially reduce that risk, but Foxconn makes parts and not complete products (I think? I could be wrong), and they have no marketing/distribution experience in this area. But hey, maybe that is where RED's closer alignment with Apple might come from? (using Apple to sell Ravens) hahaha! oh my, so true, on both counts

  32. @jonpais I'm using the Shogun Inferno. Decklink Mini 4k. Right now I have HDMI running from the Decklink to the monitor.

  33. I got an answer. I just tested the Panasonic GH5 with the newest firmware and the Small HD 503 / Atomos Shogun Inferno. First of all. If you want to record with the folllowing settings internally: Anamorphic 4:3, 4992x3744, 24p, 200Mbps, 10Bit 4:2:2, Long GOP, MOV/MP4 .. you WILL NOT have a picture on both monitors. If you records with the other setting: Anamorphic 4:3, 3328x2496, 24p/25p/50p, 400Mbps, 10Bit 4:2:2, All-Intra, MOV/MP4 .. you HAVE a picture on both monitors. But the Small HD has a scaling issue. It is basically a picture-in-picture. You can punch in via the DSLR scaling, but it still has black bars left and right. The Atomos Inferno was fine and looked great. HAVE A NICE DAY! Jonathan

    Panasonic GX9

Well, if the tiltable viewfinder and focus button are what toots your horn, go for it! For me, it wasn't. Funny enough, you never did put the GX7 on your top 5 list, nor any other M43 camera. I'm beginning to think you don't even like the system. Again, I'm not a pro-reviewer... just a consumer on the lookout.

  36. They would be pretty much exactly the same accept for more moire in the a6000 and it costs more with a speed booster. Again, it would be nice to see links to the stuff people shot that they where not satisfied with to figure out whats wrong. And not bad stuff they have seen from others, that has no value what so ever. Im interesting in what they have shot themselves. Unless of course they have never used it and are just posting stuff they think they know about it. But that never happens on forums right.. Congratulations. Its a great camera. Same image quality as the A7, maybe a hair more moire and smaller sensor. But its close enough. And imo, APS-C is almost starting to feel like a sweet spot bellow MF. I hope you have fun with it!
    1 point
  37. Exactly! Lowlight on the A7 is worse than on the G7. If you use G7 in 4K, it´s not even a contest. Plus the codec is one of the worst of the last five years of DSLMs. It has an image like the VG10, aliasing and mushy and falling apart quickly. It will look nice with blurred out background though. Charlie, congratulations. I never filmed with one, but there is a lot of great footage outthere. Still I would have recommended the G7 But A6000 with a focal reducer will satisfy your interest in the look of 36x24mm sensor size. You might also consider the codec update to 50mbit XAVC, which gives you much more robust material. cheers Hallo Yannick, HD on GX85 is not so nice unfortunately. G6 and especially G7 have much better and indeed very nice HD.
    1 point
  38. I'll admit it took me more than a moment to spot where it was :-/
    1 point
  39. @Charlie Hallo, since you are asking. I would rather suggest a 5diii instead of an A7. I think A7 looks awful video wise. Or you can get a Lumix G6 for really cheap, having a nice gradeable codec and beautiful HD. If you did so great with the GH2, you will love the G6. That, if video is your main goal. G7 has even better HD plus 4K and in 4K one stop better lowlight, iso 1600 being good enough. It might be the best deal for DSLM videoshooters.

  44. I hope they are pricing whatever they do like the early Blackmagic cinema cameras, but with much better sensors and much smaller design concepts with low energy consumption. Mini Epic without a fan, with DSLR size battery. This could be the Blackmagic revolution all over again. Mega exciting!!

  45. Yeah but the damn thing is just like Red. You Have to buy their backs, their Grip, you are going to buy their 5" monitor, they probably have a in house tripod base for it, on and on. It is that stuff that cost damn near as much as the camera body. Then down the road they will come out with their own Media just like Red did, saying off the shelf stuff is not reliable in their cameras. The grip to me is just plain stupid. It won't rotate when you want it to, and the damn thing has 3 tiny ass screws that hold it on. Who the hell thought that idea up??? Yeah it has a great output, but like any new company you are a test dummy for them, and you have to hope they are around 3 years for now. AJA Cion is a great example of , Christ I am glad I didn't buy into them years ago, and I Almost Did! They have shit around, shit around, and it still looks like shit. But it is definitely tempting I can say that. I would imagine it has as good of chance as any of them. But down the road I think even Arri will have a 5, 6 thousand dollar camera on the market. They will have to to compete with Panasonic, Sony on their Mirrorless by them. Hell maybe even Canon with their new Mirrorless will wake up by then. The days of these 80k dollar cameras are coming to an end. Think of a GH6s with 12 bit and Raw, throw a Speed Booster on it, game over.

  48. Over the course of several years that I've been following Kinefinity and owning the KineMini I've found that there is a certain group that has a negative bias towards the company and try to pick apart every little detail that they don't do right. It's like Trump supporters still moaning about Hillary's emails. Yes, I've been critical of many of their choices and many times I considered moving to a different brand. Now I have a Terra 4K being delivered any day. Why? Because it is perfect for ME and MY line of work. But whatever. If you don't want it, don't buy it.
    1 point
  49. I wish they added 4K60, but yeah, probably not gonna happen. I also wish for 10bit, internally or externally. I'm shooting F-Log with the X-T2 and with 8bit it leaves some to be desired. And I'm not sure if it's just my X-T2 or a general issue, but the camera gets hot relatively fast when you use HDMI out. And thermal noise appears after a few minutes at ISO 6400 and above, which you won't see when you only record internally. Oh and it would be great to have waveforms or rgb parade in video mode. And adjustable zebras.
