  1. Someone on my facebook feed earlier called filmmakers who prefer film to digital "hipsters" and basically idiots for wanting to shoot on film. I don't see anything wrong with Soderbergh wanting to try something different. I love my digital cameras, but I've also shot Super 8, and I have some 16mm waiting to be shot. I'll probably shoot something with my iPhone at some point, because it seems like it could be fun. I guess I'm a fucking hipster for wanting to keep filmmaking fun for me. No one ever questions an artist for switching from water color to oil, when clearly they could just paint everything the same way because there's no NEED to use anything else.

  2. Yeah, that's exactly it. Correct. All I got to say is that you should have your opinion taken away. I'm all about removing rights from strangers on the internet and destroying their freedoms. It's just a thing I like to do. Doing that...and hijacking threads from OP's. Life's mission: accomplished. I can die fulfilled. You sure you're not phasing into an alternate dimension? That could be scary.

  3. With you to a point. When I see a victorian-dressed bearded guy in wooden headphones riding a penny farthing in Clerkenwell, however, it's not fear that's my motivation when I snort about hipsters. I wouldn't, mind you, use the word to denigrate someone's choice of imaging technology.

  4. I can't be bothered to get into any lengthy discussion about this, but 28 Days Later wasn't shot on those cameras because they couldn't afford to do it on 35mm. As he says, in the passages you quoted:

Mechanically great - focus throw was huge, it was hard to focus handheld but great for the 1st AC. Fully metal and quite hefty however short. Here are a few screen grabs with a 709 LUT applied. All shot on the 50 or 85

  7. The history of this decision is well documented even by before the film was out in the cinemas in 2002. We discussed the same this subject extensively on film school. They didn't have the budget to shoot the whole thing in film, nor the time, so they had to take "an artistic decision", other people prefer B&W for some similar reasons (cheap 16mm film, rather than color 35), we do such decisions every day when we do not have the budget, the crew, and/or the time, and I do call them "artistic decisions", because in the end, you make a plan and you follow through. Cassavetes and Italian neo reailsm are two of the strongest influences in my life, and they were really far from perfect technical. Hipster in my terminology is someone that takes the motto "form follows function" in the opposite direction. I love nice and beautiful designs, but the purpose of its intended use is not to look at it, but e.g hold it -when this object is a camera - for 5-8 hours per day and earn what I can because is my only sort of income. The first time I read about "hipsters" was in W.S Burroughs "The Junkie", a book published in 1953, since when I read it, I have a comical description of this term in my mind, which changes every decade or so.

  11. Yes, Im very very happy they didn't incorporate a fully articulating screen since I then would never even consider the camera. Remote app I guess could be fun, but I would hate using it so I don't care if its in there or not. PS. just because you got canned from being a moderator doesn't mean you all of a sudden have to agree with everyone. Its ok to have different needs and opinions. And most of all, external controls that Panasonic, Sony, Samsung and Canon simply don't offer. Our only choices really is Leica (not so good video imo), Nikon DF (doesn't have video) and Fuji. But haters are always gonna hate and try to bend and twist arguments, force their opinions and pretend their needs are the worlds. All because they care about what others think about their gear. The thought about someone else not liking their camera scares them so much that they aren't satisfied by defending it on forums. They must also go on the offence agains others who doesn't blindly share their opinions and feelings. I will never get it.. ..And I don't even own a single Fuji camera or lens.

  12. thanks I know about twixtor just haven't explored it further but how higher of a shutter do you have to be to get it right? at 30P my shutter is 60 in normal mode. Another new NX1 100% video footages, the night shots just 1 small LED light with ISO 400 the rest all natural lighting.

    The Cure for Bad AutoFocus

Even with the mighty 1DXMk2, AF when left to camera may have unintended results. With lessor AF systems... which is pretty much everything else that is not using Canon's DPAF system, well, it's somewhat less than perfect. As I see it, we are starting to see some interesting options in this area. Manual focus is always an option, but has limitations. To this end I give you the Tilta Nucleus M. I recently picked one up in hopes that it could help me to vanquish focus woes once and for all. This unit paired with the Panasonic GH5s has the potential to make a formidable filmmaking/doc work combination. From my primarily experience I can tell you the system seems very well screwed together. Solid, in a way that few products are these days. Everything is metal. Even the battery doors are metal. The motors are high torque and tunable for different lenses. I have to say this system seems very complete. I will be digging into it in detail over the next few weeks and months and will offer feedback if the community is interested. PS: A couple of notes... Point 1. The unit does not come with batteries, and will only work with unprotected cell button top 18650 batteries. I generally use protected cell batteries, and as this was not mentioned online, believed I had batteries already. Needless to say, I am now waiting for batteries so I can fire up the unit. These batteries are the one recommended by Tilta. Point 2. You may find that the included lemo cables are a bit short. I purchase a second one from here.

  14. I love fuji and am biased in their favour. I had my cash ready excited to preorder this camera, but I just can't do it. For me, these more consumer cameras are good for getting a good image quickly in scenarios where you don't get a second take and where using my cinema camera would be impractical. If you are going to do long set-up times and many takes, then a cinema camera is better for that type of work. Those are my criteria, yours may be different, so my judgment is based only these factors: can it take a quick shot? does it have good iq? For me, it has good ergonomics and ibis, both ticks, but it is missing one crucial factor, and that is good face detect autofocus. What I am hearing from the videos is that it works on occasion. Even if it was at the level of the a6500 I would be fine with that as the ibis implementation is very good. But it seems to me a step behind the a6500. I just don't know at this stage if I can rely on it to get the image. I may be proven wrong but this is a consideration for me. The second issue I have is with the image quality. Don't get me wrong the colours are great - it's the other factors that have me miffed. Firstly, there appears to be a great degree of digital sharpness that makes the images look videoy. I note the diffusion they used in the professional japanese production to limit this effect. Moreover, the motion cadence is just off and it may have to do, like Andrew said, with the omission of the ALL-I codec. It doesn't look natural to me like for instance a canon or gh5. So I have decided to pass in this instance and see what canon has in store with their new mirrorless which if the rumours are true shall be 4k, will have ibis and will have autofcus face detect - the holy trinity. And nice colour science that you won't need to grade too much with the crappy 8bit codec they will no doubt give you. I don't mind the eos-m mount as the ef lenses are easily adapted.

  15. @DaveAltizer I'm envious of your acquisitions... but at least... you will be a barometer that will be able to test the X-H1 against the 1DC. I'm sure Andrew will do the same, 2 reviews are better than one :D I know you have a youtube channel, and I will definitely check it out when you review the X-H1. Nonetheless, do me a favor: - do an IQ test (some side by side comparisons to 1DC at differing resolutions) - compare the size and weight next to the 1DC & 80D (if you opt for the grip, show that next to the 1DC & 80D too) - Lastly, do a comparison of the user interface and handling next to the 1DC and/or 80D I'm sure if I opt for the X-H1, I can get past the user interface/handling issue (through constant use and practice), but still want to see how bad it is and how long it will take me to get past that little heap of the learning curve. Of course, I want your personal opinion too. Can't wait.

  16. This is what Fuji does to us! Just put a 4:2:2 8 bit codec (if you can't make it 10bit) in there, a better touch screen implementation, a few wireless options that in 2018 most (not all, most, I have to be very careful how to use my non-native language) have and most (same as before) expects, and everyone would be happy! The camera is not ground braking in anyway, so it won't stay in history for something that did first time, or extremely better than any other, so in the end, sales will indicate everything.

  19. This , I suppose, can't be enough stressed. Two 4k focal length possibilities. There's also and third for HD, multiplication is x2.7 and with GH5 we can shoot with All-I amazing 200Mb HD codec - if final delivery format is HD, and if you can go under 800 ISO value, with one fast prime you indeed have some sort of zoom. For example, with Voigtlander 17.5 there are 17.5/25/47.25 = 35/50/95mm full frame equivalent options for HD, or 35/50 full frame eq. in 4k. As everybody here knows - even in work circumstances, shooting is mostly some sort of loving process. If you love your lens(es), you'll find a way to make the best out of it. So, I dare to quote here Little Prince as shooting guru - “It's the time you spent on your rose that makes your rose so important..." (Saying that, just to add - shooting with m43 electronically controlled lenses, for getting mellower cine-image it is usually "the-must" usage of some a-la-mist filter for taming oversharply contrast. From my experience - although I didn't try last Oly pro f1.2 primes - just two of them could be left without filter cloth - one of two is Olympus 75mm on Panasonic, and I don't know why. It is not only that its true detail-discerning capability closely match that of, say, Canon's L 1.2, but also and in color rendition and grading flexibility...)

  22. what a pretty outfit, Mattias! Is the sensor about as good as from Olys compact cameras like XZ2? I like what I can get out of an XZ10 and its raw files. Video is nice? They should come out with a 2400x1200 sensor for HD raw video and give us the ultimate digital pocket 8mm cam, recording in perfect cdng.

  24. X-H1 isn't pushing forward the whole industry, but it is however pushing forward Fuji! For that I am pleased to see. Ditto if Canon released a camera which wasn't say the "best ever", but if (it won't happen) it at least caught up with the GH5 then I'd be happy to see them finally do that too, as it would go a long way to bringing the company forwards.

  25. Never said there wasn't. Thats because you more than once have tried to pass your own feelings as facts. People are different. There you go, a subjective feeling that you make sound like a fact. You forgot to say that this is just your opinion about something you have never tried. My opinion is different. We are both right, there is no wrong.

  27. @Mattias Burling Not a lot of haters here, of everything, that is why we like to communicate and participate in most topics, with the best of our intentions (mostly). I believe there is a nice and creative community going on here. I always liked everything you did and said (I was pushing that "+1" button we used to have, or whatever it was all the time!) and I am surprised that as of late you have acquired a passive-aggressive stance that you mostly accuse others of, while defending curious decisions and older equipment, on a mainly tech forum. You have the right to your opinion of course, and no one ever tried to silence you (of course), but we have the rights to our opinions too. The truth is that this camera is not going forward the whole industry, like A7s, NX1 and GH5 did in their time. Is a better, sturdier version with better implemented "luts" in built, of an a6500. I would never buy an a6500, if I could buy this for 500euros more (yes, gladly to pay the premium), but there are other options in the market, equal, or clearly better, so better waste my money on better sound/editing equipment/or my family than go Fuji for this camera and a couple of lenses that they DO NOT have and I do. If this is the best Fuji can do, then it won't be enough to compete in 2018 with the rest. m43 already offer a a couple better options (and we are waiting for a new Olympus soon with better video specs), the few NX "fanatics" won't change - no way - for a stop better ISO performance really, new Canonikon mirrorless are at the gate and there is a very mature A7rIII, and an A7sIII to end all the video orientated hybrids (that's what Sony would like to do). We are not haters, the statement that Fuji does is not that powerful enough. I would like to see those 2 cheap hybrid - Cine lenses have great autofocus, then it could be an option against Canon/Sony offerings, but it doesn't even does that.

  28. @GreekBeast That was my point exactly! Your second older video, was more to my liking, didn't have a constant movement of its shots, that caused me nervousness. I didn't like the photos zoomed in (you should have shot 4K, and make the zoom ins, or zoom in from 100% to 120%, even this small-ish difference is enough to make your point and does not harm your image, hell, sometimes I do 100-105% zoom in and is enough to make my statement). Ibis is a huge trap, EVERYONE I know have fallen into. My advice is, do not forget your other stabilized methods. A TRIPOD SHOT IS A SHOT USING A CAMERA ON A TRIPOD! Nicosia, yes, but I traveled a little bit, I had many friends in Cyprus from Uni in UK. I leave in Athens by the way (a Greek, but not a beast!). @Frank5I will add again the same lens I did before, because I believe 2 times, that is the best lens for the job! Olympus 12-100 4f!! The separation when you shoot wide open, and above 50mm, is tremendous. The ability to have hard stops on your 2 focus extreme is unparalleled and very useful on the field, the quality in most focal lengths is outstanding, MSC ("Movie & Still Compatible") focusing system, minimum focusing distance at 0.15m (0.49ft)!!! with x0.6 magnification, real 5 stop image stabilization, fully splashproof/dustproof/freezerproof and so small and light! Sorry to say, but the new Pannasonic 12-60 handles like a toy in front of this, is 2.8 only on its wide end, and goes to 60mm, great little lens, good offer, but the Olympus is screaming business! If you do not really care about versatility, just buy one of the primes the people mentioned above. No need for a zoom on an interview situation really..

  29. Very true jagnje. Yes, indeed living in a PAL-country. It is just that the combo 400Mbps, 4:2:2 10-bit ALL-Intra (very appealing as a codec) and 25p in [C4K] 4096x2160 isn't available on the GH5s, even though I think it could be possible. It should be included in a next firmware update.

  30. @jonpais you're right, the gh5 is ergonomically better in almost every aspect. But that is not to say that the XH1 is a wasted effort. It's still better than Sony who have had years to develop their interface. Fuji went a step beyond my expectations by allowing you to change exposure and other settings by touch. Though they would definitely benefit from a bigger, brighter screen with bigger text. On the subject of HLG though. The XH1 doesn't have it but it does have 400% DR in video, which if you've ever used it in stills you'll know pretty much pulls all 12-13 stops of dynamic range out of the sensor. Also, having used the Panasonic G80 for a while now, I can attest to why the tilt screen may be more favourable than the fully articulating one. Of course flip out screens are better for vloggers. But not ever camera has to appeal to every audience.

  31. I don't see anything more beautiful than the colors produced by this camera (I don't give a shit if they are 8-bit even though 4:2.2 is available through HDMI) but I told you already: They should really hire you! Cheers, as both Panasonic (GH5, G7, etc) and Fuji (X-H1 for pre-order) customer, E :-)

  32. Its here: Sony FS5, Sony FS7 have as an option built in auto variable electronic ND continuous smooth. Does exactly what you want - set shutter, aperture, ISO, and exposure is set automatically. Choose your DOF and not worry about lighting conditions. Great for run and gun, doc, eng. No need for clickless aperture lenses.

  35. They seemed to have really done the engineering right. Fuji says they have dual processors just for IBIS: "A three-axis accelerometer, a three-axis gyro sensor and a dedicated dual processor work together to carry out processing and correction approximately 10,000 times every second to achieve image stabilization performance with advanced speed and precision" Plus the new shutter: "The top plate of the FUJIFILM X-H1's shutter unit is equipped with suspension for absorbing delicate shock generated by the operation of the mechanical shutter. This minimizes camera shake risks to maximize the effect of image stabilization. The mechanism reduces shutter noise to the lowest level in the history of X Series" So far it looks better than Sony, but not quite Olympus. Will be interesting to see side-by-side comparisons. Chris I would guess probably not, the grip doesn't add another 70mm in height, or 857g, or make it any wider, or make it thicker.

  36. lol... I was too lazy to actually count.... I didn't want to say most, all or few.... so for the time being the word "many" suited the situation. :D Editted to add: In retrospect, there is only 2 in DSLR form factor with all the above features, and only 1 in this price range.

  37. ^This guy only looks at specs The a6300 4k suffers from insane rolling shutter and dimmed out LCD. While its 1080p is mushy and has all sorts of aliasing and moire. The XT2 and probably the XH1 has no such problems. Fuji lenses are not at all expensive compared to the competition.

  38. If it didn't say Soderbergh in the titles, I do knot know if we would be talking about it, here, there, anywhere, or ever. The aesthetics and style was similar, and that was almost 15 years back. Obviously he is an acclaimed director, have won the Cannes and everything, and our shorts went a few festivals and gained a grand once, and most of us are humble and plain film and video technicians, so I guess my opinion is nothing, because Soderbergh is best friend with all the Oceans, and all. I am not bombed by the "iPhone" aesthetics because I do not take part in any of those. I use some, only for my job and very close friends. There is so much white noise around us, all the time, I can't afford to waste brain cells for things I do not care. Why exactly "Pi" and "28 days later" are here? (after Mulholland, including this, I lost interest in Lynch, Eraserhead to Straight Story, one of my favorites, later on, just experimental for the hype of it.) Pi was shot in 1997-1998 in 16mm, and 28 days later around 2001-2002 with Canon XL cameras. The first is amazing, in everything, the second, could do with a little better image. I remember back then those cameras were workhorse cameras, like the C100mkII are today. Can you not make a film with C100mkII today? of course you can, the 35Mbps codec is a joke in front of raw from Arri and Red, but you still can do it. We were using Letus's adapters with better lenses as well. Later on, we did a lot of work with the EX3 Sony cameras, again, Letus and whatever you could throw in front. But I will let Don Mantle himself to explain the situation. "If I had shot those on a big negative, it would have looked absolutely stunning," Dod Mantle reflects. "It was extraordinary to see those city streets deserted. I knew how beautiful those could have been, but we made an artistic decision and I stood by it. In those particular instances, of course, we would not have been allowed to shoot and take up so much space [in 35mm] for two weeks at such a delicate time before early-morning rush hour." Even at 4 a.m., traffic control could hold back angry commuters for just so long as scenes were shot at Piccadilly Circus, Westminster Bridge and the Docklands. These sequences necessitated the use of as many as eight Canon XL1 MiniDVcameras to cover all angles, allowing shots to be made as quickly as possible. "I placed them all and framed them all," Dod Mantle recalls. "It was very difficult because we had to deal with Walkie-Talkies, screaming commuters just out of frame, police asking when we'd finish and six or eight people operating cameras. Even my gaffer, Thomas Neivelt, and producer Andrew MacDonald were operating some of the cameras. I was trying to Walkie T-stops knowing that they were at six different angles in accordance to the constantly rising sun. It was hell. "As I watched the morning light come over St. Paul's Cathedral with all of these beautiful violets, yellows and magentas, I thought, 'How much of this information am I going to be able to maintain on the final print for a massive throw in a big cinema house in London or the States?'" and there is a lot going on about post, and choices, and filters, and techniques, etc etc They didn't just take one of those and shoot natively. So, the above choices were made from need, and Inland Empire and Soder/s choice is out of need to be different, for no particular reason at all (which I call "hipsterism in motion").

  39. It is not about having extra batteries or not. It is how much time you get with each, for example, people routinely complain about battery performance of Sony cameras. The biggest problem is that Fuji had spent years and years arguing about the size advantage relative to FF, now they offer a camera that has almost the same crop as the top end m4/3, it is almost as big & heavy as the Sony FF equivalent with ~1/3 of the battery performance for video. Add the battery grip and now it is larger and heavier than a FF camera. Why do people always want to defend cameras until death? There are advantages & disadvantages with any camera. Let's be realistic about it so people can choose a bit wisely. Battery performance with X-H1 looks to be crap. No reason to argue against this.

  41. Seen "Inland Empire"? "28 Days Later"? "Pi"? The thing with ambitious film directors is that they go places for their stories without strictures. Automatically assuming that a film is "less" based on IQ is unfortunate understanding of the craft, imho. I'm going to go out in a limb and guess that the storytelling in Soderbergh's film might have a little more emotional heft than whatever y'all did back in the day.

  46. Question for all of you that have been using HLG. What is the input color space and output color space? When I'm looking at an HLG file in Resolve it seem's pretty decent while working in HLG color timeline, but there's no option for HLG output. Rec2020, Rec2100 looks bad. The colors are all shifted. Output to Rec709 looks good but I'm not seeing any more DR on that output than VLogL. Update: I found that using Rec2100 as the input and output is key. It's hard to see any difference on my Rec709 monitor but I'm getting a decklink hooked up to view HDR on the Atomos Inferno.

  47. Ok you changed my mind. Its much better to have a 2018 Datsun than a 2016 BMW... how could I not have seen it. Age is a more important spec than image quality, ergonomics, button layout, lenses, etc. Boy are the XT2 shooters gonna be disappointed when the X-H1 is released. Imagine waking up and turning on the computer just to see all the great photos you had have turned to shit. Phone is ringing with angry clients demanding their money back. Your wife screaming because all the pictures of the kids has turned to turds in microwaves. Its gonna be brutal.
