  1. Last year I DP'd and edited two films for the 15 Second Horror challenge, and I meant to share them here, but forgot. The first is Crawlspace, written & directed by my friend Chess Maxwell: Crawlspace made it onto Lloyd Kaufman's top ten, which was exciting for us since we're all fans of The Toxic Avenger and were inspired by Troma when we were teenagers. You can see it and the rest of "Uncle Lloyd"s Top Ten here: The other film was "A Gripping Tale" written & directed by my friend Steve Sanders: Both were shot on the Panasonic G7 in CineV with Canon FD lenses. This was one of the most fun shoots I've worked on recently. Both were shot at the same location, same day, back to back, with the same cast and crew, and I'm pretty proud of our work on these.

Oh no, what have I done? Have I gone and bought the bmpcc again? I tried 4K, it was fine, now I'm back to the land of better color and DR, and ProresHQ/Raw files and that s16 sensor. Feels good. I'd say this is still my favorite camera. Anyway, I decided to compare some of my c-mount lenses. Don't mind the quick and dirty lighting and grading, this is more about the lenses and their sharpness wide open. You can tell the 12.5mm is the sharpest because of the aliasing in my beard. I still love the camera though. Here's some bmpcc/c-mount lens footage I shot a year ago (which is what made me want to get the pocket again) with the KP 26mm, KP Yvar 16mm 2.8, and Fujinon 18-108mm 2.5 zoom:

  3. Something I have noticed... Nobody talks about this cam! Panasonic, Fuji, Sony... tons of topics on forums everywhere. Nikon? tumbleweeds. I suppose everyone interested in video went out and bought a A7R III or GH5 instead!? Thing is, D850's 4K and stills are better than both of them, and so is the lens line-up. Yes it lacks IBIS and good video AF. But so does the Canon 1D C. The D850 shoots a comparable image, yet without a crop and without MJPEG file sizes. I can really see myself picking the D850 above the A7R III if it carries on performing like it does... Such a clean codec, so little moire in full frame 4k by comparison to the Sony, and way better colour.

  5. I am. Shifting one of my XT2's for the XH1. The more I see, the more I'm looking forward to it. IBIS looks much better than Sony's first effort, Fuji really did their homework with the mechanism and the dual processors. Its faster for shooting action than any current Fuji, and the XT2 is no slouch. I like the bigger grip and the touchscreen. Yes as you've pointed out, there's room for improvement with info on the display, the implementation of the touchscreen and the need for the grip to really make it a complete camera. 60p would be nice, but its not a deal breaker for me. The camera will get better with updates as well. I was watching the Fuji Guy with the Camera Store duo last night, it sounded like he hinted that there's room for a video oriented camera in Fuji's lineup. IMO Fuji is moving toward more video features, a XV1 seems inevitable. They're just so beholden to a group of curmudgeon still shooters that whine about any feature beyond pushing a button to take a photo, so there moving slower than others. Might be the end of my time with Sony and the a7r2/s2. Though giving up the 42mp stills will be tough... Chris

  6. You really seem to forget the horrible ISO performance, really horrible, looking like a handycam above 1600. Lenses for low light? Sure get the premium S lenses, used, and you can just trash them after you decide to switch system. Need more low light? Sure buy the adapter for the price of a low end panasonic mirrorless, again that you will trash since it can't be used in the future. It was an amazing product no doubt, anyway let's not forget about its flaws for low light when others were way better already. And fixing those issue by giving away for money for a DEAD system is not something I would advise or feel good about it, honestly. However if the NX2 was real........

  7. Now I don't know what to think... two authorities which I equally deeply respect suggest me different attitude... Emanuel: "Imagery is not real, it is always fake!" ... Matthew Hartman: "Trust your eye"... And it seems there's no Mattias to resolutely resolve this dilema... Moreover sage Webrunner is still mute about that question, which is significant sign. There's no even good sober Jon Pais with his dancers from American in Vietnam movie to help... Damn! All in all, I feel myself little bit confused and desperate... Last time I remember similar filling was when Krishna explained to me something about reality at the field of Kurukshetra, but I was too stupid to understand.

  8. Am I off in saying I really don't care about a camera's particular color cast? I always grade my footage, always have. I started my career some 25 years ago in print as a graphic designer. I'm used to playing with color and I know color theory like the back of my hand. I just take care of it in post. Isn't that what you all do as well? THIS one I know the technical reason why we don't perceive vibrant colors as some cameras resolve. Atmosphere. Atmosphere diffuses how our eyes see protons, i.e. light, i.e color. I'm ready for my gold star now.

  10. 1.) Rent a very expensive cine lens the size of a small canon, probably on a PL mount. The lens gives the image a personality or character. You are actually mostly looking for imperfection here. 2.) Good diffused lighting, staying away from extreme contrast ratios and harsh shadows with short falloffs, especially if you're shooting in 8/10 bit in camera. 3.) Camera settings. Go flat if you can't shoot RAW. Turn down or off internal sharpness and reduce contrast. Saturation can be left at default. 4.) Set a custom white balance using a white or 50% grey card. This will help you greatly in post get an accurate color balance. You should fair well with your Fuji. 5.) Subtle grading. Most ppl want to fill up their entire waveform chart and have deep contrast, but I think the sweet spot in emulating film is sitting 10-15% below 100 and 5-10% above zero. This is obviously subjective and contextual, and rightfully should be. Learn about qualifiers. 6.) Tiffen Pro Mist 1/4 (or silimar) helps reduce digital sharpness. Industry even uses them on $60k cameras. 7.) Aviod handheld with cameras that have bad rolling shutter and jitter. If you need that look add it in post with tracked camera shake presets. You'll spend much less time not having to fuss with warp stabilizer, which in practical terms is no magic pill. 8.) Movement/Composition/Line/Texture/Contrast ratios/Lighting/Visual Narrative/Sound/Musicality. Study up on these subjects. They will boost your production value x10 even on a Dora the Explorer Fisher Price camera. Swiper, no god damn swiping! Looking at your details and plight, I honestly don't see a strong case for you to upgrade either. You would be gaining minimal improvements over your current setup. I would instead invest any extra cash on other gear. I hate how these manufacturers make people feel like they MUST have the latest and greatest. If we thought of these cameras in terms of say a cresent wrench, would we "upgrade" so often? I have a question for everyone. How do you purchase your gear? Cash? Credit? If it's credit, is the upgrade honestly worth going into debt over? I spent considerable money on my current gear in the last couple years. Now that the spending frenzy is over I'm looking at all this gear and I'm in disbelief. The odd thing is I knew I was on a spending high at the time and I did it anyway. Spending money is a high and one can get addicted to it, even going into considerable dept. What's the saying, "The eyes are bigger than the stomach"?

  11. There's a feature slated to be shot on the NX1 that's going to hit several festivals, with the hope and actual intent to bring some positive attention to the camera. Here's the guy's rig. I wish him well. Feel guilty? Corporations don't have feelings, and I seriously doubt the Samsung family does much emoting.

  12. Well, that escalated quickly. Thanks to Saturn in Berlin leaving a GH5 unattended I was able to do a quick sniffing session and the app does indeed control the angle increments so I now have the command to do it. Its a bit of an unusual structure so I suspect the camera needs to be in the specific mode to accept the offset parts of the message but its something to go on when I get back. I'm not convinced it will work on the GX but you never know. At least I can include it in the device for GH5 owners if nothing else. Cheers. Yes, I've been busy with real work but also with making big changes to the controller. No, the camera hears the command and then does absolutely nothing to action it. Might as well tell a teenager to clean their room.

  13. Hey all, I've just finished up a new grading tutorial especially for any of you shooting CinemaDNGs. It actually works with any CinemaDNG, not just limited to Blackmagic cameras. In the tutorial I show you how get access to the full dynamic range, richer colours throughout the full range, and all in a curve thats a lot nicer to grade than BMD Film. Feel free to leave any feedback or questions and I'll do my best to help you out!

  16. Well... I didn't lie! But it looks like these guys came up with a very clever mod for the sony Rx0 (1 inch sensor): https://www.back-bone.ca/product/ribcage-rx0/ With a Speedbooster i think we can have something close to 2x crop (or you can enjoy with your c-mount lenses like on bmpcc times). Unfortunately this price is hard to justify..

  17. I think it’s just two years too late unfortunately. Things have moved on. We need IBIS and AF these days I guess. It’s been almost like a second revolution in video from the dslr movement. I just hired a full time shooter/editor to help me with my YT videos and he’s never used a large sensor camera that doesn’t have good AF. He is fresh out of college and they learned on the C100mkii and 70D. I handed him my 1DC and he didn’t know what to do. I told him he needs to learn..but still, it’s going to be a whole new crop of kids coming up in the film industry never touching manual focus lol

  18. I'm impressed at how lifelike they look but not with the look itself. The image doesn't really speak to me the way a fuji's does. The G80 has a similar thing. Great, lifelike image (apart from when it sometimes decides to go radioactive) but not inspiring. This is all very subjective mumbojumbo though and i would not expect everyone to carry the same opinion. @jonpais Were they colour corrected or just a curve correction?

  20. This camera is ideal for prosumer or amateur videographers." Point and shoot" with continuous autofocus (CAF), gamma DR all parameters at zero, dual antishake (OIS+DIS) and P mode. This video was shot handheld with the EVF and the 16-50mm S lens. The resolution is superior to anything I have seen ( 70mm film in a Cinerama or Imax theater not counted). You guys might say it´s "oversharpened" but I bet in that case you don´t have the up to date display which is an oled or VA panel FALD UHD TV. Yesterday I shot a video with the 50-150mm S lens and it is on YouTube also.

  21. @anonim @Matthew Hartman I don't know if you guys have ever shot with Fujis or not but for me, the Fuji's give the most accurate representation of the feeling of a scene through their colours and tonality. And there is no colour bias on skin tones, like Sony's have with yellow or Panasonics have with orange. This is why I often end up not editing images out of the Fujis. If I want to change the mood, then I go to colour grading. BTW, regarding that video about the religious indian men.... it seems to me that they are just crazy homeless people?

  24. I'm going to be honest, I actually can't explain it in technical terms. I just know it when I see it. Take a face for example. With my NX1, every freaking clogged pore, wrinkle and hair stubble is very detailed and pronounced along with of course the eye area. (Which is excellent) But when I see footage from an Alexa, RED, BMD, Canon (cinema) only the eyes are in crisp detail, everything else is somehow smoother or more "weighted". Skin looks thicker and there's generally a sense of more dimension in what the camera resolves. I also notice edges don't suffer from chromatic aberration, or edge fringing. Now, I'm not saying this isn't possible with a $3,000 camera. It is. I already know that through my own experiences. And obviously certain lens' have different characteristics, I just personally see more footage in this bracket [$3,000] where it looks "too sharp" or what some here have been calling "thin", 'video-y" "digital", etc. One of these days I'll be able to put it in better technical terms. Maybe someone here can help with that? @anomin "wow-emulation beautiness" I'm stealing this!

  25. That's the topic where we have to be intelligent and where I find the value of evaluating forums as EOSHD. Simply put, I find that there are major and minor upgrades - task for manufacturer is to hide that minor upgrades are minor and present them as enough big... That's, for example, why I'm not interested in GH5s... I think in-reality-minor upgrade and minor (or even major!) downgrade IBIS wise. GH5 is major step in every field - not at least at finally getting Iso1600 usability that stay rich and cinematic-manipulative... GH5s looks as ISO3200 usable, but under the hood of agressive NR I found it is the same as GH5 with Resolve NR. Everything above is a gimic - type of shown in TheCameraStore lowlight scene above. To conclude this excursion trying to be exemplar about the camera I know - Panasonic don't squeeze everything from new senzor... just little bit of finer color manipulation... so I even expect there will be one more GH camera between now and widely expected 2020 Tokyo version. GH6 or similar with GH5s sensor and back of IBIS integration and even better color-codec usage. Sorry if I pollute Fuji topic too much with such observations.

  26. Cash. But I'm very cautious to sell everything I tried and didn't find best choice for me (and you have to be lucky to accomplished it if you are not in the big market country). Just now I kept only Voigtlanders 17.5 and 42.5 and Olympus 75mm. Reason for Voigts - I found that you have to have every single gout of light for Panasonic GH5 to keep it under 1600Iso. (That's also reason, besides construction, why I preferred V42.5 over Panalaica 42.5 which has T value about 1.6-1.8) Reason for Oly - also light capability and pure optical (not electronical) details discerning power that, in conjunction with ETC mode, made this lens as 3-4steps zoom (because of pure sharpness, it is quite easy to magnified in PP a little and stay quite safe).

  27. Then you should use SLOG2 - S-Gamut with the official correction LUT Or (not) use SLOG3 - S-Gamut3.cine with official correction LUT The problem here: if you expose properly, then you have to correct exposure before adding any of the LUT's above. With s-gamut there is a color shift from magenta to green while the exposure rises, so after the correction you may have green tint... Or use Slog3/S-Gamut3.cine correction which not shifts with exposure, but banding may occur with slog3 on 8 bit cameras. The best case if you are using Davinci Resolve with Color space mapping and use SLOG2 with S-Gamut3.cine > SLOG3/S-Gamut3.cine > official correction LUT After that a little tweak on the skintones, a little hoax on the green and the blue of the sky, and BAAM, you have the same image what filmconvert can provide :D

  28. Yeah, I have more affection for mini primes too. Do you not have a local rental house? I know you're not in the states so I don't know the logistics of your area. Those mounts not shipped yet would make me OCD. I'd be on the horn every day until they ship. $85 is not chump change.

  29. I was thinking about this marketing move from Samsung and trying to place myself in some of the comments made here. But to be honest, Samsung said as much when they left the market. The official statement is that there is no money in mirrorless systems and the impetus was to instead focus on smartphones. Well...isn't that exactly what they're doing here? They are making the claim here that the NX line was the "old" venture, to be replaced by the new. This is exactly the narrative being portayed in this marketing video, at least that's what I'm reading. I'm sure in Samsung's perspective, 120 FPS in UHD 4K is better than 30 FPS in UHD 4K. They tend to make assertions about quality based on the spec sheet, and they are proud of their stuff. I think what they, Samsung fail to understand, or have no dedication to, is the veiwpoint of the prosumer here. Than again, the consumer trumps the prosumer in terms of profits by miles and miles. I have this running commentary in my head (I take medication) complete with British accents, that the NX1 was never meant to be a prosumer camera, at least where it concerns upper management. I think the more professional features were "snuck in" by the workshop elves as it where and management in passing and on the way to prison just said, "right, cheers". Oh, I don't freaking know.

  30. Haha. Well according to statistics most of us are in that same pot on a slow boil with you. ? Dude, that was pretty mean spirited. Jonpais is very partial to facts and has been known to go to great lengths to back up his assertions. He throws them out there but if that doesn't interest you just disregard it. No need to get insulting. He's a real person with real thoughts and opinions. That being said, Jonpais, I think you should lay off of Mattiaus a little, he's a good guy with a big heart and contributes a lot to the online photographic and video community. This topic got out of hand a little. It's just a camera. Lets not lose our good sense over differences of opinion.

  31. If you look at this Gallery and can call the colors natural well. And I doubt DPR fiddled with the color output. Colors are a bit over the top. Olympus was the same way at the time. I am not saying a lot people didn't like it, but they sure were not accurate, at least to me. But you are right a lot of weddings were shot with a Fuji at the time. But there is a reason Canon has been the 800 pound gorilla. Their color science is pretty accurate other than a hint of Orange in Reds. But I am really more of a Nikon color fan than Canon most of my life. I think they strike a good balance between the two. Wow if there was a ML Raw Nikon D750 I would be all over that! And at the same time the original Canon 5D was the king of weeding photographers and I would imagine the 5D mk IV still is.still is. I used to use the original 5D for Model Portfolios and friends weddings as a guest for years. I just was never a fan of Fuji colors. Now for landscape most armatures like a Fuji because there is not much you need to do for printing. But that does not make them ideal for true color. I have never been a person that likes HDR photography and that is sort of what the output of a Fuji looks like to me. Not my cup of tea. https://***URL removed***/sample-galleries/3299540988/fuji-finepix-s3-pro-review-samples/6308448159

  36. Most of the videos so far don't really show off Fuji's IQ I must admit. I think it's because most of the footage put out is from that Eterna profile, which is a not a very interesting or impressive profile. However, having shot with many cameras under the $3000 range (from a Nikon d5200 to a Canon C100 II and many in between) I can attest to Fuji having the most pleasent image of them all. I mean just look at this. Shot with the XT2 with 35mm f1.4 and classic chrome

  37. I read the Andrew Smallman post and can not disagree more. I don’t understand why that perspective is relevant in a thread about Fujifilm cameras. If one doesn’t like these ergonomics there is almost literally every other manufacturer on the market. Camera ergonomics are a subjective thing. Different people work best with different types of tools. The XH1 certainly pushes the envelope in that it is a fantastic photo camera firstly but also a fantastic video camera. The A7riii might be better but it’s in a different price class. Especially when factoring in lenses. The GH5 isn’t nearly as good a stills camera and the A6500 isn’t even close for lots of reasons. Olympus comes closest but again, not as good a photo camera in my mind.

    Panasonic GH6 - Predictions

Yes but no way that the first camera carrying this sensor will be a GHx camera. This tech is too good to put into a 2500 euro prosumer cam. It will most likely make it's debute in a new Varicam or be called Panasonic Space 3000 CAM.

  39. They seemed to have really done the engineering right. Fuji says they have dual processors just for IBIS: "A three-axis accelerometer, a three-axis gyro sensor and a dedicated dual processor work together to carry out processing and correction approximately 10,000 times every second to achieve image stabilization performance with advanced speed and precision" Plus the new shutter: "The top plate of the FUJIFILM X-H1's shutter unit is equipped with suspension for absorbing delicate shock generated by the operation of the mechanical shutter. This minimizes camera shake risks to maximize the effect of image stabilization. The mechanism reduces shutter noise to the lowest level in the history of X Series" So far it looks better than Sony, but not quite Olympus. Will be interesting to see side-by-side comparisons. Chris I would guess probably not, the grip doesn't add another 70mm in height, or 857g, or make it any wider, or make it thicker.

Mini Epic without a fan, with DSLR size battery. This could be the Blackmagic revolution all over again. Mega exciting!!
