  1. How dare they make stuff for people with less money. Only rich people should be allowed to take pictures.

  4. HDR is for raw HDMI out. Don't think we are getting that for video lol. The 4k timelapse mode is another indication that this is targeted firmly at the vloggers and is a nice feature. What I like about canon is how easy there cameras are to use - they may be late to the party but when their products arrive you know they will work properly and do the job.

  5. "For 720p" lol Hey 2008 called... It wants its resolution back! Let me run out and buy a 5D Mk IV... I am so excited for that 720p! Especially as my GH5S only does 1080p 180fps and now 240fps for almost half the money. Hmm.

  6. Of course there should be pricing for all people, everywhere. And I suspect the 40000000000D is aimed at China. Big, growing market there. However, you shouldn't defend the bastards They are not providing value for money. They are providing plastic mounts and keeping prices the same. The FIRST thing a budget user should do is check out your YouTube channel and watch some of the videos. Then they would get value for money. The LAST thing they should do is walk into a big box retailer who doesn't give a shit about their needs, and have this shit from Canon pushed on them for $300. $300 would get you far more on eBay, or indeed new from other manufacturers.

  7. The best part about this new Fuji imo is that it spawned this article: https://www.fujirumors.com/photographers-anonymous-hate/

  8. @EthanAlexander my favorite: Let's kick some ice:) Great to see the variety of concept. @mercer Your shots look great. What don´t you like about the 50mm, did you have chroma and UV haze with it? I think FDs are awesome on S35 digital format, but they go bonkers in midday sun.

  10. Hey Eoshd, posted a couple months ago of a new web series on working artists I created with my friends at the UUU Art Collective. Our original chosen name was ART:WORKS which we really loved, however due to similarities with a local series called ART/WORK we decided to rebrand. We only lost a couple hundred views so in the grand scheme of things no big deal. So i'd like to share the first 3 episodes of our new series: WORK. Repoussé Mural Arts Studio Photography We're really trying to reach and inspire other freelance artists, filmmakers included. I may thrn the camera in on myself in a future episode. Cheers everyone!

  11. Huh? I think I know what you are alluding to.... Art over tech? The constant evolution of technology, and this incessant need to attain the best that is offered in terms of technology meanwhile sacrificing art in the process. I guess so... I also think that you can't wait for that "unicorn" of a camera... Just use what you have to capture that idea in your head.

  12. @jonpais I'm glad if it so... 1000$ less temptation Personally and strangely - regarding curiosity - I yet had no chance to try 10.5.

  13. I believe the original eos-m was at a higher bitrate but I’m pretty sure the t2i was still at that 24mbps. Either way, the specs match other cameras in that price bracket... the GX80 1080p is pretty low and the 4K bitrate is the same. I don’t think this camera will be industry leading or anything but at least it should be in the same ballpark as the competitors... with a bigger sensor and DPAF. We’ll see. I had my hopes up for the M5 and was let down, so I don’t expect anything at this point.

  14. C100mkII is 35Mbps also, and it is a S35 sensor. Bitrates don't mean much. The proof of the pudding is in the eating!

  15. Yeah, if the price is at the M6 price point, this will probably be the glovebox camera I’ve been waiting for. This and the 22mm, or the EF 35mm f2, should make for a nice little hybrid for street shooting.

  18. Sure there are a lot of people like that. And I see the potential buyer getting ripped off to be quite honest... These are the current cheapest new interchangeable lens cameras in the UK at WEX... A reminder of all that the GX800 gives the customer, including 4K https://www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/cameras-camcorders/lumix-g-compact-system-cameras/dc-gx800.html Whereas the 1300D is practically 2008's low-end technology.

  19. Unlikely. It looks more like the the M5, which I believe was $1000. Some nice details to note: On/Off switch is on the right side The camera strap shoulders are fixed like in their DSLR bodies. No more noisy loose things! Overall there seem to be less buttons and dials than the M5 unfortunately

  20. Not according to your earlier posts. But like I said, lets not debate this. Some people would rather have an a6000 and some people think mirrorless sucks ass. None of them is right or wrong. There is no "better" camera, there is only personal opinions.

  21. I thought that must have been what you were going for with the lens character and to be honest it works really well. Especially as the actors face seems to be saying, 'I am freaking the f– out'.

  22. There: SDR, to put it that way, has to compose an image with rough strokes. Shades, lights and colors are there, but the differentiation is too weak to be subtle and seductive. Vignettes, sDoF, background motion blur and *more cuts* are used instead. With HDR (and of course UHD), the viewer's gaze can linger. The take can last longer, it can be a wider shot, containing more detail. The rarer the cuts, the more powerful they are. They become lean-forward, hold-your-breath moments. Yes, I can see how HDR may change the way films are made. These are creative possibilities indeed. Not yet explored, and there's a lot to learn.

  24. You only have to go to a big box store to confirm this - around 3/4 of the TVs on display at my local Curry's (one of the main UK TV shops) are 1080P.

  25. If Canon didn't make and sell stuff like this it's doubtful they'd have had the resources to research and develop DPAF - so that's good, right? Anyway - they make cameras for every segment - why grouse every time they bring one out that isn't for the segment represented on this forum?

The behavior is correct - Alexa does it too ; ) With wide gamut to 709 primaries, most saturated blues become very saturated

  27. Personally I think the character of the lens distracts a bit, so I did a little bit of smoothening too.

  28. I would use masks/keys and Resolve's deband filter for this kind of stuff. Just one frame: before | after I did not finetune the key so there is some detail loss here and there, I also modified the sky's color a bit. This is way faster than grain + denoiser.

  30. @Gregormannschaft thanks, the background is challenging in this shot. I really didn’t want to give away too much about the story, but I also don’t want to seem too willy-nilly about it either, so I will say that the cluttered bokeh fits with the character’s state of mind in that scene. With that being said, I will probably reshoot that shot, I was hoping to get away using a lens I already own, but I think I need a longer, newer lens to get the full benefit of the effect I’m going for. But I really like your take on it... the tones pulled out the inherent separation.

  31. This was a lot of fun, cheers Mercer. Great still, even if the background is hella busy.

  32. Thank you for your suggestions and contribution to this exercise. Your “cool” version was amongst my favorites. I am a zero budget filmmaker, and wear all of the hats of my production. I started filmmaking in pursuit of another outlet for my screenplays. Meanwhile, while attempting to acquire a modicum of skill, I was bit by the filmmaking bug, but I would never consider myself a cinematographer or a DP. I really have no interest in being one. I’m hoping to be a competent camera operator before my film is finished... But somebody needs to film my movies... so I guess it has to be me. With that being said, I appreciate every bit of info I learn from you guys on this site. To add, I tend to think of cinematography more like Kubrick or Polanski would (obviously not nearly as talented) from a director and writer’s view. I respect the traditional role of the cinematographer but the film is the director’s... visuals and all. Just my opinion.

  33. Dude, I'm really surprised more here in this community aren't showing you some love for this. I've linked your website to some local filmmaking groups in my physical community. I can't thank you enough. I know how much time and effort goes into this type of stuff.

  35. Yup. Leica is making money as well. Its actually so profitable that Blackstone was ready to get return on their investment. Talk about a successful placement from those guys. They saw the merited and well trained horse in the back that the crowed somehow missed, blinded by the flamboyant younger stallions in the front.

    Lenses

@mercer thanks. To be honest, I think the same angle with the same grading would look awesome with a lot of cameras. The light was really beautiful. But it directly hit the lens so I had to crank the contrast all the way up. There are a few reasons I considered just now: 1: It was my moms camera (she didn't like me taking it to the desert, haha), so I was deciding between a new sony 6000 and gx80, at the moment, both cameras are at the same price in germany. 2: For pictures with heavy grading as well as 50mbit fhd the sonys are great, but I think the panasonics have better color space, which is important in compressed video. 3. The lenses for sony are overpriced, so I chose to go for a cheap camera and invest more in the stuff around it (like lenses, speedboosters, microphones and stuff) 4. The sony overheats, so it is not futureproof if I work for serious clients :D 5. The gx80 has IS. I think that could be really great when using old glass and tele lenses. 6. The gh2 sundance winner and Andy Lee got me sold on panasonic, even though I don't think that Andy Lee's movie was finished :D To be honest, if I happen to prefer the sony, I can just sell my gx80 used and buy the sony6000 so that is a maximum loss of 100 dollars Also I shoot everything manual, so I don't care about any kind of autofocus tracking. I will try to shoot events with the gx80 (pictures) and see if anyone notices that I am using a tiny camera with vintage class. Thanks for your tipps: I am really bothered right now because the lens turbo md to m43 is out of stock. Also I don't know if there will be problems with the lenses hitting the glass of the lens turbo, so I don't wanna ship it all the way from USA and then have to return it. How did you solve that problem with the minoltas? I am looking at the 28mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, 35-70 3.5 md (4 glasses) and the 135mm 2.8. Fun Fact: My gx80 is already kind of famous. I already have a dump adapter and took my minolta lense to a movie festival. A television team from german 1st. programm was there that wanted to finish their scene but ran out of time. I was like: I have a 4k camera, I can finish it, so I did. German actor Götz otto was there. I asked him to sit down on a sofa on the event, and gave him directions from 5 different angles. He was like: Man, you are giving a lot of orders for a director, and started laughing, but he really gave me all his acting skills. In case you didn't know, he was the bad guy in james bond, tomorrow never dies. I guess that makes me one of the few people in the forum that already directed a hollywood actor, haha. Will post a short clip if anyone is interested. (sorry for writing so much) Cheers

  43. My involvement with movie / stills (even as an amateur till this day) is (I think) kind of interesting. I love music (more in the past - free time is shorter to enjoy it each day that passes), love to go to concerts, but...my memory is kind of weak, a lot of moments in concerts end being forgotten. Hence I had the idea to film parts of the concerts as a way to remember. It was a time that smartphones are the Samsung's with Tizen, Android did not even exist yet, and I bought a Kodak Zi8 - a little film camera, fixed lens, with 1080p (a rarity in those days). And started to record some shows. Soon I upgraded to a Sony HX9, much better quality and sound. And with it, tried to start to take some stills - and liked it. Than start to search for a camera that could make good movies and stills, Google mentioned a camera called GH2, I found a site called EOSHD, which owner made a video in Tokyo with that camera that blowns me away...and the rest is history. Video brought me the stills, and I love both. It gives you that kind of satisfaction from a thing that was created, and done, only by you, a sense of accomplishment. As I guy that likes art, it is the closest that I can get to it. But I think that my stills side in much better. All photos with m4/3 cameras, "which sucks for concerts, you need a full frame one". The second one was published in the Franz Ferdinand's Instagram account, good moment.

  44. The advantage with vertical shooting is that people's expectations are much lower and it's much easier to stand out among other vertical videos. I have shot some vertical videos (with a proper camera) for facebook, and I would definitely recommend it for short facebook content. Most people keep their cell phone vertical while watching video on their cell-phones (except for netflix perhaps), but whether you should film vertically or not depends on how well the app which the video will be played from supports vertical resolutions. As an example, YouTube supports vertical videos well in full screen mode, but people watching it on their phone will most likely either turn it horizontally it for full-screen, or watch it vertically with comments underneath, which would remove the whole point of filming vertically.

  45. When i started shooting (stills) all i did was grab the camera walk around the city where i live and try to look for interesting things happening around me and i do remember the feeling i had when i actually captured something nice! And at the time i was using medium format so i only had 12 chances to get something awesome, and i really miss the ritual of going out shooting and then developing those rolls just to find what came out of it, they werent always the best picture one could take but it was my own personal ritual which i think i will go back to.

  46. I think it’s just two years too late unfortunately. Things have moved on. We need IBIS and AF these days I guess. It’s been almost like a second revolution in video from the dslr movement. I just hired a full time shooter/editor to help me with my YT videos and he’s never used a large sensor camera that doesn’t have good AF. He is fresh out of college and they learned on the C100mkii and 70D. I handed him my 1DC and he didn’t know what to do. I told him he needs to learn..but still, it’s going to be a whole new crop of kids coming up in the film industry never touching manual focus lol
