  3. In a sense, going from one medium into another is taking another step forward into seeing the beauty in everything. I remember years ago when I was working on a music project with a friend and we were writing abstract minimal electronic music, we got to the point where everything had artistic value. We were auditioning a song and quite by chance one of my neighbours unlocked their car, and the beep from that coincided spectacularly with the track. Everything is about context, and so if you can change your brain to be open in the right ways then everything is art. Moving from one medium into another is learning to see and appreciate things we hadn't before.

  4. Hi. There are a lot of heated threads and arguments on this forum about technical details but what's the point if there is no creativity behind? We have many talented people here but wish I could see more of your actual work instead of all the useless "fights." So, what's your best video? What is the project your are the most proud of? Please post the link of your video with a few words about the gears and production. I'd love to see what you guys do in real life and get some inspiration. Hopefully we can ask questions based on actual material instead of spec sheet. Cheers.

  5. By videos shot for HDR I mean videos shot with an emphasis on scenes that would benefit in particular from the extended DR of HDR, especially highlights. Here are three examples, shot in 4K using HLG with REC2020 color and uploaded to YouTube so that those with HDR viewing devices can view them in HDR, those not in SDR. But, because these videos emphasize highlights that can best be captured by HDR, the view in SDR will miss the point (to exaggerate, like looking at a picture of a rainbow in B&W). The SDR versions will look perfectly fine, but they will be far less interesting. To view in HDR, if you can, you must go to the YouTube site to view by clicking on the YouTube logo. First up (already posted in the contentious YouTube HDR thread) is a video shot on a sunny day after a snowstorm. White snow expanses in bright sun are almost blindingly bright in the real world, ideal for capture in HDR: Next are two videos shot at the golden hour. The bright, golden light reflected off surfaces and/or coloring objects are again captured well in HDR (white surfaces reflecting bright light are the most impressive).

  6. When I started imaging more seriously, I was shooting 95% video/5% stills. I have now shifted to the opposite, and often when I head out my dedicated camera is incapable of shooting video. A lot of my casual shooting involves family and the kids, and with video you just end up observing the moments behind a camera worrying about getting the shot rather than whats happening. I find with stills, I can get the shots I want and still be involved for the majority of the activity. For me the entire workflow has become key -take some shots-->pop SD card into iPad/iphone adapter-->load into LR mobile-->adjust then and there or later on desktop at home or on phone when have spare moment, very very fast and flexible and has changed the way I work. I have just got an instax printer, and am enjoying the merging of digital and analog - its been great seeing how both adults and kids react to actually being to hold a photo of themselves rather than just seeing it on a phone screen (for most kids it all they know), and sticking 'real' photos of the kids on the fridge is magic.

  9. It's ten years next September since Canon's 18MP sensor was first introduced in the original 7D, and ten years this October since DIGIC4 showed up in the 50D. It'd almost be impressive how much longevity Canon have gotten out of those components, if not for the comparative lack of progress elsewhere since then.

  10. Tamron just announced an AF version of their 20mm for FE mount. Why is it great? Well imagine this: you get a 20mm F/2 on your A7RIII that is light and small with great low light and that should be perfect on a gimbal, and at the push of a button you switch to S35 mode giving you a 30mm equivalent, close to the famous 35mm. And since it is digital, you do not need to rebalance your gimbal at all nor changing lens. Amazing. FF-S35 mode is really great to allow light travel with 1 or 2 primes. I really hope that they release a 18mpx A7S III with S35 mode, with 4K60P 10 bits and A7RIII AF this would kill the segment.

  11. @mat33 it was similar for me in the beginning. I wanted to shot - edit on smartphone - publish. Lately I don't do that as often but I still prefer a camera with wifi or native DNGs for when I do. I too have an instax and love that thing. Its my analog instagram. Later on I also got me a nice large printer. At my old job we had our own printing house so I started missing the occasional large print as well.

  13. Has to be dynamic range for me. I could deal with 1080 resolution for the time being but blown out highlights and clipped shadows drive me bonkers to no healthy end. And it makes sense. Our eyes are going right to the lightest and darkest parts of the scene, and what do many videos have in the background? Blown out skies and practicals. ARGRHGHAGHEUHGH. ????????? Badge? You mean brand?

  15. I still remember the smell of all the chemicals used in the process. It's funny how that stays with you after so many years. Last time I processed negatives and went into the darkroom was about 1996. My least favorite part of the process was loading the film into the canister for the chemical process to expose the negatives in complete darkness. Everything was done by touch. Man, thinking back, what a long multi-step process to get from A to B. It was all experiemental. I can't decide if I miss it or not. At least I know I don't miss the cost or brain cell damage, nor the unforgiving nature of making a mistake. ?

  16. I was a Beta tester for Windows 10 hell 3 years ago it seems. I have Never had a problem with it after like Beta version 3. Windows 7 is like running windows 95 in this day and age. That was what I was running before 10. It is day and night different, but in a good way. People complain about Bloatware. Shit it is that way since it has way more features. You think a program is going to get smaller that has more stuff to offer? It is like the same crap people complain about Sony menus. It is Huge because it has a ton of features most of the others don't have. Hell if you don't even have 4k, face detect, IBIS, EVF, on and on I can have a menu that is only 1 page! Can it be better, well heck yes, but it Ain't going to be 2 pages long. Get 10, it works and has worked for years now. It is sort of foreign at first, no doubt about that.

  19. When you said you don't see a difference I respected that opinion. I gave my opinion but respected yours. You however are trying to force your crap on me and are trying to say "Im right and anyone not agreeing is an idiot". The only thing I take away from that is that you are not a photographer. You haven't convinced me of anything except that. In my eyes you are now a camera guy. There is no need to debate or argue about this. You see one thing, I see another. Respect it and move on.

  21. I used to drive a nice oldtimer. A classic Jeep. A nice one. It's a very stylish and cool car. And for driving and transportation, it's way ahead ot any cheap Toyota at maximum of 2.000 $ you can get today. Driving this car regularly was a joy. The glorification of modern digital is BS. I have dozens of HQ (even on metal paper) prints proving this. Just say: "I don't like it!" Saying it's not unique, is saying you are not able to see the look when working with film out of a classic camera. And yes, you need hours to get the same look. With film it's a matter of minutes. Just do a blind A/B test...

  24. @Kisaha Thanks for your comment. Music was composed by a great guitarist who is from that area in France. Bretagne is a big part of Celtic world, full of history and legend. Bretagne is, for example, the land of Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Concerning your question I used the JVC at a max of ISO1600 and got no problem with noise, as I am always setting lights for my indoor shot and I also get a great range of lenses with a wide aperture when needed. @Anaconda_ I am using this ND filter trick as well, but still, I have to use this terrible knob to get the right exposure on Lumix lens. I prefer not to count on the exposure correction too much during post-processing as this often deteriorate the image. The one push auto exposure was a feature I was used to on all the ENG camera I worked with for documentary (from Sony PD150 & Digibeta, Panasonic HVX200 & HPX 500, AF103...) and I am missing it here as soon as Log profile is selected. It can be very useful while moving (or panning) from shadow to light progressively while shooting. ND filter turn does not allow this. On the LS300, I tend to use the aperture ring on Voigtlander or non-native lens with adapter (Nikon AIS).

  25. $5 says no DIS while recording 4k. And probably with a hefty crop. Also the best they could do was 24p? If it's not even fast enough to do a full 30p (or 1080 120 fps), that doesn't bode well for the video quality. But maybe they'll put whatever magic they put in the 1DC and it will actually be good.

  28. I'm shooting the Nikon F5 for months now - very intensively. My conclusion: IQ wise, nothing you could NOT get with a modern digital camera. It's more the pleasure and the hype than rational reasons - at least when speaking of APSC / FF. And it's about deceleration of a photographers work. Putting reflection, lighting and composition in the center of our work. At least in my eyes... "Discovery" and promotion of an alleged outdated technique is common nowadays, as people are oversaturated and bored with permanent new camera releases and latest specs and bells & whistles. So - in my eyes and experience - a nice entertainment claiming "mojo of old film". The truth is, there is no special mojo when it comes to image output of film photography. Nothing a skilled person could not do quite fast when post processing digital images. For myself, I'll put my F5 back in the shelf and spend my time on keeping improving my Photoshop skills, when it comes to making and post processing photographs. And I am not the only one coming to this conclusion: https://petapixel.com/2018/02/22/film-vs-digital-can-tell-difference/ Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  29. Such awesome thread and posts. Shows how much of a great community this often is. Discussing with eachother instead of one against another. Some awesome inspiration I had been getting from post like these. I searched the Eoshd treasure chests for gems like these. This is a great archive. Found some more musicvideso from Oliver Daniel. That kid has been putting out stuff for years now. Just like Mattias doing his awesome camera and lens video essays.

  30. Here is a project I mainly shot on JVC-LS300 camera in LOG mode. The only limitation with Log mode is losing the possibility to quickly adjust the exposure by pointing the camera at something average and pressing the "auto" button once to get a starting point close to the exact exposure. Sometimes that limitation slows down a bit the process while switching from indoor to outdoor shots using Lumix lens as the aperture knob on the camera is not precise and not easy to handle. B cameras were Panasonic G85, GH3, and GH4

  31. Well, yes, I suppose it IS a bug. Just tried it now, in the same project where nits/cmd/m² were available before (in the scope settings dropdown menu), these are now greyed out. Feedback sent. They have to iron out some really annoying things asap, I think.

  32. Round tripping would be an option, but if I remember correctly, as well 10-bit as HLG and 4k (the limit is UHD) clips from the GH5 are not supported in the free version of Resolve. And it makes no difference whether you created Optimized Media (=ProRes) before or not, because Resolve will refer to the original media in the roundtrip. Your only free option was to create ProRes copies outside of FCP X. Or, but this is a little awkward, extract the Optimized Media from the Library bundle and re-import them to a new Library. I also feel that it would be better to work in ProResHQ, and you can't choose that for Optimized Media. Is the fact that the histogram of the FCP scopes doesn't switch to nits in an HDR Library a bug? Another color-related bug? I'm not sure. Note that in this Ripple Training the histogram isn't even mentioned, it's the waveform in RGB parade: And, apart from that, the known Color Wheels issue (behaving weird in rec_709) isn't an issue for HDR/rec_2020. And the comparatively simple workflow described above is for the faint-of-heart. (this is redundant for jonpais, I know)

  33. Here's my favourites - Both are 1 man productions. I did sound, lights, camera, editing, writing etc. for these. 1st one is my day job (the only thing I DIDN'T do for this was the voice over because it's for American audiences) And this one I did while working my day job, as a little hobby and to learn more. The best way to learn is to teach right? This is 100% 1 man show.

With online distribution it becomes very challenging, next to impossible to stop piracy. And if you can even track it down you then have to have the money for arbitration costs. When you sign on to a network it becomes their IP and they have their boardroom full of lawyers to assist in protecting their IP. On the bright side, you get your check and/or royalty, not to mention any new projects that spawn from that exposure. It seems as if losing strict control over your IP is almost the new norm. I mean even the big media networks can't stop it. That being said, piracy is still very much illegal in most countries so technically speaking the laws still protect you. https://www.bradley.com/insights/publications/2012/03/international-copyright-protection-how-does-it-w__

  42. When i started shooting (stills) all i did was grab the camera walk around the city where i live and try to look for interesting things happening around me and i do remember the feeling i had when i actually captured something nice! And at the time i was using medium format so i only had 12 chances to get something awesome, and i really miss the ritual of going out shooting and then developing those rolls just to find what came out of it, they werent always the best picture one could take but it was my own personal ritual which i think i will go back to.

  43. I think video is a slow art, cumbersome and complicated. There's a definite attraction to the simplicity and enjoyment of stills shooting, and great shots come quicker, sometimes one after the other. With video, they pass you by... sometimes, even whilst you're adjusting the tripod. I started getting lazy for casual video - handheld, instead of a tripod, autofocus instead of manual focus, slow-mo instead of 24p, music instead of ambience, and so on... I want to go back to the slow way. Photography does have just as much power, and lends itself to pointing and shooting. Whereas video, when it is point & shoot, often lacks the same magic. Video is best when it's a slow burn of circumstances directly under your control... Less run and gun... More stopping and waiting.
