  1. This was such a simple shoot, but the story really just fell into place and came together. This is a little piece on my Great Uncle that I shot several years ago on my 7D and a 24mm L Prime lens. This video changed my career...

  2. haha! i still poke my head in here to see what's going on, but I've been cutting a special for HBO since the first of the year that's been keeping me busy. we just delivered it yesterday and am looking forward to finding some time to shoot. In mid-january I was the cinematographer on a short performance piece. EVA1, contax-zeiss 35mm f/1.4 modded with an internal 2x oval aperture. Also, we've been prepping for the release of our latest feature (I didn't direct this one) shot on two GH4s.

  4. It really does come in handy. You can always just use a sheet of white printer paper, or the white part of a clapper board. Anything as close to pure white will get you a decent WB and bring you along to about 95% nailed in camera. Besides, the NX1 does a decent job with skin tones as it is. You can of course get calibrated color charts (for a premium) and bring that into Resolve if you want to get strict color accuracy, but I'm not that analytical with my color, and I try to steer away from mixing/shooting different camera brands.

  9. Haha I don't know what your objective in this thread is really.. Are you trying to pull everyone to buying an NX1? Since the camera is several years old, I reckon many readers have already considered it and skipped past it (or tried it already). The NX1 is actually 550g without battery (http://www.samsung.com/uk/cameras/nx1-16-50mm-premium-s-lens/). The battery is 80g http://www.samsung.com/au/camera-accessories/nx-battery-bp1900/ which brings the total to 630g, so still less than the Fuji but not 123g less

  13. Same as the others, I'm either using the daylight preset or custom WB. Really wished Kelvin worked. I previously used a gray card as well, but i recently bought a white balance disc that you shoot through similar to an Expodisc. It works well, it's just obnoxious to carry around. I need to start using Matthew's technique and shooting a white card so I can make sure it's nailed when editing.

  14. really? come on now just about every single post of yours in this thread has been about the H1's shortcomings and how vastly superior the GH5 is to your eyes (including multiple H1 vs GH5 screenshots) ? also how do you explain several people in this thread stating their desire to switch systems from GH5 to H1, if they aren't competing? i'm sorry but it certainly feels like some of the posters here are eager to put down this not even released product in an effort to justify their own gear purchases.. meanwhile, in the real world, the H1 reached top 10 position on amazon's best mirrorless sellers on pre-orders alone (while GH5S bottoms at +50th): i'm pretty sure Fuji have a hit on their hands, no matter what the so-called pundits in here may want to make people believe..

  15. Yeah. I‘ll probably stop coming here. My camera should arrive March 1. It‘s probably better to learn how to work with it instead of being told what it can‘t do and that it doesn‘t stack up to the competition here.

  17. it says „Filmed on FUJIFILM X-H1“ It feels, like most of those Fuji X Photographers got 2 copies of the camera. One to shoot and one to film it. Sith limited time and most of them being photographers and not film makers I am honestly impressed, that there are even some good looking videos coming out. Fuji should really think about limiting the quantity and go for more quality of promo videos,

  19. Anyway, here’s my latest attempt, and final, after trying a few in computer calibration and color profiles. It seems to represent itself the same in the editor as it does on my iPhone. But for all I know it could be off? Honestly, I don’t love the shot anyway due to lens choice. The bokeh is intentionally busy and chaotic but it is a little harsher than I was originally going for. Thankfully, the luxury of being a hobbyist gives me the ability for reshoots. Ehh... a little too saturated... ugh.

  20. I can assure you even professional sets use plenty of DIY gear, maybe not when they're pitching the budget to a client, but it ends up in there, trust me. ? I think a lot of enthusiasts make a self defeating assumption about their own work. "Professional" in practical terms means a lot of different things to different people, and I suspect some enthusiasts undervalue the quality of their work and that the term "professional" holds some secret magic sauce. In my view, professional to me means passion and work ethic. The dictionary definition says it means those that exchange currency for a good or service. But in practical terms I think that means very little. So I'm here to say if you're an enthusiast and have this idea that small budgets and DIY gear means "unprofessional", you can think again. Then rewind and repeat. If I'm short a hair or kicker light, I'm not going to order/purchase another $700 Aputure frensel, instead I'm going to the nearest Home Depot and getting a shop LED with the highest CRI for $50. Not uncommon at all. The client won't likely even know the difference, and the grips won't be complaining either, one less trip to the truck.

    How would you grade this?

This was meant to be a test for fun... not to decide upon the knowledge or talent of the colorist, or filmmaker. It's all subjective anyway. I think all of the images are interesting and I've learned a ton from this. But honestly, i don't love any of them and how could I... none of you could be in my head and understand the theme and narrative within that scene... but I sure do like a lot of them and most are better than what I came up with.

  24. Yeah I have to admit I have had a Blue Screen of Death a few times myself in 10. I think I have had some in Every Windows version I have ever had. No clue why. Virus I would suspect a lot of times. Bugs probably the rest of the time. Yeah is that close to the ugliest dog you ever seen. It is so ugly it is almost cute LoL. And you know I suspected it was an African name. That might be an Akita. I have had a few of them They are scary big and when you play with them they can get a little TOO Rowdy at times LoL. Super powerful dogs. Yeah I have found most of the time it is a video driver problem or the card it's self going bad.

  26. Just been catching up on the video clips and reviews for this camera. I think i will give it a go, i have a gh5 and my use is 60% video 40% stills. I had been thinking about picking up a seperate stills cam but this has the potential to be a better hybrid than the gh5 for me and my priorities. Im loving the general colour/tone/vibe of a lot of the footage which means more than 10 bit to me ( altho i wish it was 10 bit ). I will pick it up before selling my gh5 just incase im wrong or change my mind. Quite excited though

Sorry to say and I apologize, but after reading last contributions to thread, my first idea for next poll question is Do you think that formulation (regarding all participation so far) as "I think I will enjoy my Sunday now. And I think I will skip this thread until some people who actually have the camera can try to get it back on course." is more a) pathetic b) theatral c) arrogant d) just pure opinion that doesn't mean anything else...

  33. How big do you print? I worked with an extremely successful high end photographer who would make wall-sized prints from 12MPs. The shots were stunning, but IMO they didn't quite hold up when you stand close. If you print bigger than 11X17 I might reconsider, but it depends on your personal standards so no one is going to be able to answer this question for you.

  35. The Sony is a toy next to the Canon. I’ve owned both, but still have the Canon.

  36. Mweh, it's the sum of all parts. Sony cams e.g. are very good on paper... yet they don't have a camera I'd actually pick up. I'm willing to compromise on some specs, as long as the camera overall outperforms others in terms of overall features, reliability, handling and ultimately bang for buck. And I guess as well the ability to keep lenses fairly small, the thing that really makes a system compact. That's why I went the GH2 route over the 600D/T3i back in the day.

  37. I have owned 3 Sony A7xx cameras and I Never found the menus confusing. Sure they can be better, But my Olympus EM1 was just as complex, and I found it easy after awhile. IF you use them you know what to do. If you own 10 different brands of cameras you sure are not going to go from one to the other very easily as if you would be familiar with one brand. All these new cameras have 50 buttons on them you can program what you need on average for them. Hardly any real reason to even go into the menus anymore. Heck a lot what you need it right on the LCD touchscreens now. Now I admit I wish on all these cameras there was a way to move items around like you can on a Cell Phone. Put all you usually need say on the first 2 or 3 pages, now that would be sweet. And no I have Never owned a NX camera. It at the time was too new, and I NEVER buy into a new system as I have seen a lot of brands go away as old as I am. That is why I would Never buy a Kinefinity. You have to be rich to be a Guinea Pig for startups. It is all about lenses not cameras anyway. And even today the Samsung lacks a lot on native lenses for them. What they have is good, but not enough of them. And even if they have a ton of them buying new is a ball buster compared to used ones cost wise. So that system has to be around a pretty long time to find used ones in quantity. I have been a Sony man since I got into video in my TV days. They are the best at it, at least for broadcast, and I know they will be at the top pretty much forever. When they do something they don't shit around. Their main problem to me is try to make shit propitiatory and I hate that. Red is the biggest Whore in the world for that. But Sony has been trying to do that for years also. It all boils down to skill anyway in this day and age. Like has been said 100 times on here, any camera made in the last 10 years can take great pictures, and in the last five years most have pretty damn good video in them. I am as guilty as anyone on here. I look at, dream about, 50 different cameras and sit here on my ass producing hardly anything. I could have been at the Cannes Film Festival using a Canon T2i if I had the skill and drive to do it! But I doubt it will change LoL.

  38. Of course it can also function as a video camera. It is a hybrid just as the designer is saying in that video. jonpais could have taken a screenshot of the interview two seconds later when the same guys says “especially for photo use”. He also says a few seconds later that this camera can function as a solution for very small video projects. It’s not a professional video camera. It is a professional grade stills camera however. I remember reading elsewhere about this too. Perhaps it was Billy in the camerastoretv interview saying apropos the lack of 10bit that let’s not forget that this is not primarily a video camera. I forgot. In the dpreview interview the same designer talks about how the XH1 is made with DSLR users in mind. The grip, robustness and improved autofocus makes this camera a more viable D500 or 7D alternative. The Fuji 200 f2 is coming later this year and that is a large heavy lens that this camera was made for. I can see it as a perfect mate to the 50-140 2.8 and the 16-55 f2.8. We can start counting photo features vs video features in the design. It’s more optimised for photography. As are the lenses with the exception of the new MK zooms. Hybrid cameras are in demand and it’s great to see Fujifilm putting some good video features including one simulation for video. I think it can be a very versatile camera but if my main objective was video then I think the GH5 is still better, for video. But I don’t think the XH1 was ever intended to really outdo the GH5 on video. The XH1 is a professional mirrorless stills camera with excellent video features. Just as, say, the EM1ii.

  42. I was a Beta tester for Windows 10 hell 3 years ago it seems. I have Never had a problem with it after like Beta version 3. Windows 7 is like running windows 95 in this day and age. That was what I was running before 10. It is day and night different, but in a good way. People complain about Bloatware. Shit it is that way since it has way more features. You think a program is going to get smaller that has more stuff to offer? It is like the same crap people complain about Sony menus. It is Huge because it has a ton of features most of the others don't have. Hell if you don't even have 4k, face detect, IBIS, EVF, on and on I can have a menu that is only 1 page! Can it be better, well heck yes, but it Ain't going to be 2 pages long. Get 10, it works and has worked for years now. It is sort of foreign at first, no doubt about that.

  43. most eos m owners already own that 22mm, its a sharp and fast lens but really not suitable for arms length vlogging 11-22mm probably much better, even with 2.4x crop it is 26mm which is totally fine without crop the 15-45mm is perfect it will be the best seller in youtube industry and hurt a lot of Sony/Panasonic entry - mid range budget cameras

  47. I also use the custom white balance in the WB settings and snap a photo of something as close to pure white in the scene. A white or 50% gray card would be beneficial to have on hand for this. This technique is not 100%, yet close. I also hold up the same white card in the beginning of the take. (Just the initial take will do if it's the same scene) Then in Premiere and with my footage loaded, in the Lumetri color panel, I use "WB Selector" eyedropper tool and select on the white card in the beginning of the first take. Then I check my RGB parade scope and maker sure the 3 color channels (RED, GREEN, BLUE) are sitting relatively equal around 120-230 You should have pretty reasonable WB at that point.
    1 point
  48. Here's what I do: Use the custom white balance with a grey card in most indoor situations. Especially when setting up lights. If I'm outdoors in daylight I'll just use auto. Sometimes auto during golden hour doesn't get it warm enough so I'll choose cloudy preset. But I don't like the presets that much. I agree the Kelvin setting is glitched out. Random tinted frames. Such a shame.

  49. Me too, I'm curious as to how it missed in situations where it shouldn't; subjects lit by spotlight, in broad daylight, not even moving for that matter. I too have used the GH3 and still use the GH4 extensively and I haven't experienced what I did with the GH5. GH4 just snaps on to where I want to focus in photo or video mode as it should, I have lots of nice and sharp action shots, some of my all time favorite photos were taken with that camera. So naturally I assumed I would get the same performance or better with the GH5 but I'm left being more cautious on shoots now. Using lenses such as the 12-35, 35-100 and 75mm 1.8, either the AF was completely worthless and won't even let me get to take the shot, or it would just be inaccurate and focus slightly forward or behind, so for a while I was thinking those lenses were actually not very sharp wide open, or I thought it was something to do with the GH5's sensor design, as when I go to see GH4 shots the lenses were definitely sharp enough.
