Fuji X-H1. IBIS, Phase Detect 4K beast?

Thought to myself, "I'll go to the X-H1 thread and talk about some of the assumptions about Fuji AF being substandard versus my contrary experience of of the AF using the X-T2 for some very demanding tasks and also my tests of the Face Detect AF on it last year and....." Well, then I opened the thread....12 points -

@Mattias Burling I really wonder how I was part of that conversation, and If I have any rights to be offended, by you, PM-ing people calling names on me?!?! At least, my "fanboism" ( I wonder to whom? To a dead as a Dodo camera system? Even your "accusation" is ridiculous) is happening in front of everyone and not behind personal messages and firewalls. This is a sad story written by a sad individual. I would say we need a new Fuji X-H1 thread, about that said camera, and not people's psychological issues. The camera will be out soon and we do not need all this white noise.4 points

my point exactly, however, i am not sure the list was that constructive at all... as yet again he berates Fuji ergonomics even going as far as "to encourage photographers to think about whether an aperture ring is really more efficient than a thumbwheel" which indeed should be perceived as flaming since the aperture ring (and ISO/SS dials which he also likes to complain about) are inherent core elements of the Fuji X system. the list also suggests "Fuji might have made better use of the LCD screen real estate" as I believe the LCD icons are too small for his eyesight (?), yet he disregards H1 addressing that with the new top sub-monitor giving clear settings info (even when the camera is off!) and allowing the back LCD to be clutter-free. the rest of the list "reminds", "speculates" & "alerts"... anyways, I just find it all reeks of negative bias, and has all been stated over & over which is why i called him out on that.. must agree this thread is definitely a dead-end mess. SMH3 points -
Of course bugs and bad testing is not acceptable. I can easily name plenty of things which I think suck and should be improved on my X-Pro 2. I think the list that jonpais wrote now in his last post was constructive. The earlier repeated posting about how the manual controls are not right is ok to say once but when it’s repeated again and again it can be perceived as flaming. I mean I wouldn’t post repeatedly in a GH5 thread how the camera is broken because it doesn’t have an aperture ring. Ergonomics are subjective. Therefore a variety of designs is a good thing. One of the things I’m most excited about in the XH1 is the option of linear manual focus. Finally. The other is the supposedly shortened lag when the camera switches between finder and screen. I find this intolerable and therefore mostly have my camera set to “viewfinder only”.3 points

I quite like the slight cyan shift in the blue skies, almost like a touch of that orangy blue look you see a lot of but in a good way. I think the Eterna profile with the extra dynamic range mode could be a great route to a pretty cinematic image for those with limited colour skill or less time (both me). I think having a great deal of the look baked in helps with the 8 bit too, i think its quite a unique feature for this camera. Hope im not droning on too much. m50 has a 1.6x crop when shooting 4k,that's about 2.5x crop from a ff sensor. And dual pixel AF is not available when shooting 4k, the Contrast AF is very slow more over, the battery life is terribly short Why Canon keep making those weird things?2 points -
So yeah, big crop and no DPAF in 4K... so basically the same crop as the GH4... add a Speedbooster and you’re at 1.7x crop. And if the Tracking AF is as good as it is in the G7X Mark II, it will still have the best AF in its class... and the crop will let me get Canon 4K (which looks pretty good) with C-Mount lenses... so that’s kinda cool for the glovebox camera I’m looking for.2 points

@jonpais a crime no. but stating the above repeatedly over & over is excessive and reeks of negative bias. you've made these points clear pages ago, why not give it a rest and move on? camera clearly isn't for you.. me personally none of what you list there is even close to being a deal breaker and aperture ring control (along the ISO/SS top dials) is what drew me to Fuji in the first place.. different strokes for different folks2 points

HDR on Youtube - next big thing? Requirements?
Axel and one other reacted to Matthew Hartman for a topic
I can see why ppl would be attracted to HDR technology. Colors pop like no one's business. It creates a rich viewing experience, as opposed to simply watching something. And I'm all about the tech and propelling the industry forward and questioning those old conventions that were perpetrated on misconceptions. That being said, I'm on the fence. Is it possible to create a film that's so vivid and rich in detail and color that it takes your audience right out of the story? I'm not sold yet that this is a good platform for narrative work. For advertising, it can't come soon enough. This is going to make product shots absolutely pop and scream "buy me immediately".2 points -
haha! i still poke my head in here to see what's going on, but I've been cutting a special for HBO since the first of the year that's been keeping me busy. we just delivered it yesterday and am looking forward to finding some time to shoot. In mid-january I was the cinematographer on a short performance piece. EVA1, contax-zeiss 35mm f/1.4 modded with an internal 2x oval aperture. Also, we've been prepping for the release of our latest feature (I didn't direct this one) shot on two GH4s.2 points

No. I am sorry. The entry level, lowest camera in the M line is the M100, but even the M3 is still on the shelves. I would neither consider an 800 USD camera as entry level. For this price, the M50 is rather an insult. Actually, the whole M-line is a mess. Incomprehensible naming, i.e. segmentation, mediocre lens line-up, and empty marketing buzzwords. The "5-axis "image stabilization is "non-axis", as Canon uses electronic, software-based picture make-up, The 4K is a joke, huge crop, no dual pixel AF, and on this "Vlogging-monster" the microphone input blocks the articulated screen.1 point
-
The resolutions I've mentioned are the limit that magic lantern imposes on this particular camera - that's just the way they designed it. It might be because it would be unstable to go beyond, not sure. In any case, the limited card write speed (40 mb/s) plays a major factor in this limitation - with the higher resolutions you can only record a couple seconds of footage before the buffer fills up.1 point

Very nice colours in that Nepal video. I like how Eterna make the skies a tad cyan. Nice dynamic range and the night clips are beautiful too. Nice AF shift to that boy that suddenly enters in front of the main subject. I disagree with Northrup that the XH1 should have had a fully articulating screen. I really dislike them and it would be a definitive deal killer – I don't want to look down at my screen off the camera's center axis. Annoys me to no end. The articulation also adds extra movements that have to be performed to view the screen. Should just be a flip up motion like on a 500CM or Rolleiflex. I understand that it is valuable for vloggers but there are better cameras for vlogging than a reinforced sturdy pro body like this. For the occasional self portrait or weird angle I've found the smartphone app to work perfectly well.1 point

They are kind of a disappointment. They are just extended lenses that are going to be front heavy. It should be far better to get the Nikon/Canon mount with the Sigma adapter. Much easier to sell, and of course use on other cameras.1 point -
Canon M50 mirrorless camera features 4K video
Inazuma reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
There's about 5 years of pent-up demand in Canon's fanbase for affordable 4K video with a decent spec. So this is a right slap in the face whichever way you look at it. An entry level camera is $350. This is $900. Here's the main innovation - Canon has realised that the days of savvy customers carefully researching a camera and weighing up the pros and cons is long gone, what makes the big money is YouTube and celebrity stars with massive social media followings pushing products on their followers.1 point -
Using the full sensor you can't go beyond 1736x692 without cropping on the eos m, and it's not very usable given the amount of aliasing / moire unfortunately. Instead I'm using movie crop mode which allows you to record 1800x1024 with a 4.66x crop (from full frame). Using the 5x zoom mode you can shoot 1920x1080 (4.37x crop) and even up to 2.5k, but then you don't get the correct framing on liveview, it's very zoomed in.1 point

Is a7R II in Super 35 Better than a6500 / a6300?
Aussie Ash reacted to ThomHaig for a topic
Hey Mark, Thought I'd chip in. From what I've seen, a6500 and a7rii at S35 footage look, in practice, Here's a pretty detailed IQ test that might help: My a6500 is actually up on ebay at the moment. It's a good little camera, but whilst I thought I'd be able to get over the awkward ergonomics, I never truly did. It took all the fun out of using it, and when I got a decent shot it felt more like pot-luck that I got the setting right, rather than capable of being confident that it was doing what I wanted! Plus, as someone who shoots with their left eye to the viewfinder, I really came to be frustrated with the off-centre EVT, and ended up sometimes changing focus region with my nose. Would much rather their APS-C bodies had the same shape as their full-frame ones.1 point -
Is a7R II in Super 35 Better than a6500 / a6300?
Mark Romero 2 reacted to Geoff CB for a topic
Couple of differences. DR is very slightly better on a7r II. Body is better: viewfinder (I would never go away from this), grip, balance, card slot placement, etc. FF 1080 on the A7rII is good, Super 35 is unfortunately pretty bad. Most importantly, you have the full frame option available to you Biggest losses: Image preview in S-log and the loss of Sgamut3.1 point -

webrunner5 reacted to markr041 for a topic
Yes, autofocus prowess really matters for Vlogging: you see plenty of instances where the camera loses focus on the Vlogger's face - even slight head movements do that (GH5 anyone?). And many Vloggers like to move around with the camera at a set distance (selfie stick), and the same ugly thing happens as something in the background appears and attracts the attention of the AF. Pro-wannabe's and pretenders of course claim they use manual focus exclusively. Only amateurs, tourists, and hobbyists "need" AF.1 point -
Here's a very quick test I shot with a Schneider / Beaulieu Optivaron 6-66mm f1.8 super 8 lens. 12-bit lossless, continuous shooting at 1392x1028 resolution. You can't really go higher than this resolution without getting excessive vignetting, and 4:3 aspect ratio is definitely the way to go with this lens. Also here's a test with an EF-M 15-45mm stock lens, this time at 1792x1030 resolution. I wrote the music on ableton live for both these videos.1 point

It's just tiring to see a company become so big they're scared to change for fear of losing money. You have to pay a lot more to get the features you want in the cinema line which is fine because the work pays for it- but with cameras like these it's kinda like buying an artificially speed restricted car. The only reason we can make films is due to technology improving and becoming more affordable, yet they obviously are too afraid to allow the potential of the technology be utilised (look at Magic Lantern on the 5diii) I guess it all makes business sense, but then that's the problem- Canon need a shakeup.1 point -
In the magic lantern menu, I'm using the "real-time preview" option under the Raw video options (selectable under the Preview options). This gives me the correct framing (including correct aspect ratio) in live view if I press the "info" button on the camera a couple times until the magic lantern overlay appears. Also Global draw has to be enabled - ensure that's switched on in the magic lantern menu. I'm doing this with the Movie crop mode enabled (i.e. the "600D style movie-crop mode"). If you try this with another crop mode, you won't get the correct framing.1 point

Is a7R II in Super 35 Better than a6500 / a6300?
Mark Romero 2 reacted to Don Kotlos for a topic
Even if they are differences they should be fairly minimal. FF 1080p with A7rII in terms of resolution. Same A7rII is better. Additionally, with good light, you can use the FF 4K mode which has very good rolling shutter performance. Maybe A6500 is a tiny bit better? I am not sure. A6500 I think also adds sgammut3.cine which imo is the best space to work with. I am not sure there is a significant difference here either. It should be about an hour or recording for both. As far as PB test goes, the only thing that changed with the speedbooster was the angle of view, which made the rolling shutter appear smaller. But essentially it should be exactly the same as without the speedbooster.1 point -
Is a7R II in Super 35 Better than a6500 / a6300?
Mark Romero 2 reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
I know the Rolling shutter is better, but what is interesting is Philip Bloom put a Speedbootster on the A7r mk II in the s35 crop mode, and that pushed it back up to FF, and the Rolling shutter was almost gone. And the Overheating issue is Way better than the A6500. About the resolution in s35 mode. No clue what the A6500 is in APSC . But below is the info on the A7 mk II. "The camera also offers a cropped Super 35mm mode, while still capturing a higher-resolution 5168 x 2912 (5K) frame and condensing it into the 8MP-equivalent 4K video size." From Imaging Resource. I am pretty sure AF is a Lot better. When it came out they touted it could focus a Canon lens on it faster than a Canon body can! ISO wins by a ton, A6500 tops out at 51,600, A7r mk II is 50 - 102,400 Dynamic Range, it wins by a mile in FF, s35 crop I have no clue what it is? I mean these is really no way you can compare the 2. I know the 1080p is better on the A7r mk II also. The A7r mk II until the new mk III just came out was about the best camera in the world for stills and video. Christ it is a beast compared to a A6300!!1 point -

If it's in RAW and you're using Resolve, a little spatial NR on the first node will do the trick. I've gotten away with some serious underexposure when shooting in 4,6K RAW that way.1 point

All 4K is pretty useless at this price point, so I don’t mind the crop. Sure I’d rather it be less, but it isn’t and I’m not going to lose sleep over it. I get that, I love Canon’s IS lenses. Even the modest 2 stops on the 28-135mm is pretty steady at the long end. At 4 stops, the 35mm f2 is damn near tripod steady... as is the 24-70mm f4. Please post some videos when you get it... I probably won’t pick one up until the summer or fall.1 point -

nice looking stuff i'm no longer shooting on 5d RAW, but my workflow was rather easy: 1. Mount the MLV files in MLVFS (this mounts a new virtual hard drive where all of your files miraculously transferm into cinemadng in real time) 2. Import the files from the virtual drive into Davinci Resolve. Transform the RAW into linear, then linear to Arri LogC. 3. Cut and grade at leisure. 4. Export as dxnhd or your preferred codec1 point
