  1. I have had the camera for over a week now and even though I promised myself, not to post in this forum again, I will give my opinion about a few things, maybe they help someone. These are mainly about handling, the image quality seems to be very good and I don't want to start the discussion about 8bit vs 10bit again. The video options are set up nicely, the addition of DCI 4K is very welcome. You can start the recording with the touchscreen, if you set it to Shot. I also like the silent controls, even if they are a little bit small. I just touch it once to start it and then use the joystick to navigate and set the different options. Not only is it much faster but it doesn't close the menu after setting up one item either. the new linear manual focus option for focus by wire lenses is great. That Fuji implemented this before Panasonic or Sony does is interesting too. Talking about manual focus, you can punch in either with a key you set up (per default the back wheel) or by double tapping the screen. There are two magnifications, between which you switch by circling the back wheel. You can move the magnified field during recording either with the joystick or by pressing the corners of the touchscreen. Resolution of the magnification is very good. The same two magnifications are available in the viewfinder, but you probably won't need it, because the resolution of the EVF is very high. There is an Auto-magnification too, which starts when you turn the focus ring, but you have to activate it in the menu. I only did a few quick tests on autofocus. It worked fine 90% of the time. Nothing to write home about, but acceptable. There are some AF options which I haven't played with too much yet, handling tracking speed and focus speed. slow motion has to be activated separately, either through the menu or a function button. I did program a swipe gesture on the touch screen to open the slow motion menu. Overall you notice, that this camera wasn't designed for video as it's main selling point. But coming from Fujifilm cameras, this is a huge step up. There are a lot of new options and you get the Fujifilm colors, which compensate for some drawbacks, at least for me. Overall I am impressed by the camera, especially for people shooting stills too, this is a very nice option. The new shutter is extremely quiet, you can probably shoot at a set and have no one noticing the sound.

  2. A great application for the Hydrogen would be someone to make documentary about how many no doubt otherwise sane grown adults suddenly lose their shit like the front row of a Beatles concert when they log on to that board. In 3D obviously. Or 30D if Jim announces they're working on it.

  3. I didn't know where to post this, not worth another thread, but there are a lot of rumors about a XC15/XC20 with an EF mount, this is a very interesting patent here of a hybrid camera, seemingly targeted on video first (that would be a first for a hybrid). https://www.canonnews.com/first-hint-at-a-hybrid-video-stills-ilc-camera While everyone talks about an EF mount, my guess is that it can possibly has an EF-M mount, and that would be very interesting, indeed! I am sure @mercer could appreciate such camera, and probably a lot of buyers world wide.

  4. BLOCKER by Afternow A new way to previs with your phone. You can program which camera you'll be using, and different focal lengths. Drop in characters, adjust their height, and sun/light placement. Then figure out blocking. It has a few funky bugs but it's freakin amazing for a free app. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/blocker-by-afternow/id1256222832?mt=8

    Samsung "The Frame"

Just hung this up in the living room. A 4k Hdr tv that looks like a picture/art frame on the wall. It displays an image as long as motion is detected and adjusts its brighness to the ambient light. Extremely believable and love this feature. The reason I mention it here is the 4k hdr. Horrible. I come from a panny plasma and a 65" 4k hdr lg oled. I assumed a 4k hdr panel from samsung would look somewhat respectable. Nope. Turned off all the typical motion, sharpening, contrast, etc... Still horrible. Oversharpened with terrible motion. If this is the type of image folks are used to viewing, no wonder no can ever agree on what cameras look good. Drastic difference in the look of shows I know and you tube camera tests. Shocking a $1400 panel can look this bad in comparison.

  6. I got one. Indy film festivals are a dime a dozen. There's thousands of 'em. There's not all that many that are hardwired directly to Hollywoo. You know how it is, big name festivals earn the luxury of advanced screening of studio films. It happens when the brand and event goes corporate. SXSW is now an industry event. You ever been? I was there once 10 years ago and it was already pretty much big biz'ness. Actually, I should give all y'all here a submission code discount for the festival I'm a part of. What do you think? You want an indy fest, let me tell you, we're definitely an indy fest.

@mercer you mean 35 1.8 over the zoom? I like the zoom because 24mm speedboosted is the least wide that I am okay with and also the 24mm is much more expensive than the 24-35 zoom. I'll give my feedback about which lenses fit with the zhongyi speedbooster once it is there

You could apply that to my fireplace! Its my job to review the performance of live orchestras and I depend completely upon a hearing aid. I have my entire life. The sounds I hear are this devices own rendition and interpretation of the original source. The aid I use can only pass through 6 different frequencies and plays some extra loud and even changes some frequencies altogether (although I have no way of knowing this) I just traveled to a small town in Alaska last week. It was so cold the musicians had to wear gloves! To me the orchestra sounded amazing! I write up a glowing review. This small community orchestra with only 5 members and all under the age of 10 are easily on par with the last orchestra I reviewed, the new york philharmonic! Did I mention I got into making reviews just 2 years ago, when I left my country western band because of difference of opinion. They liked acoustic and I like electric. To be honest I cant tell which is which, but my guitar just has this mojo I cant really explain. But im thinking ill trade it in for one of those new tiny violins anyway, you know the ones so small you play with just your thumb and finger. I think they are called the worlds smallest violin. I hear if you play a song on them, its just like hearing an entire orchestra. But keep in mind alot of other orchestra reviwers are claiming you need 10 strings at least. Watch out for the 8 string ones. In fact I think ill write my next review on this. But first I have to go visit JCS. I thought this stuff was supposed to wear off by now.

@mercer Just watched that GX85/Minolta 28mm montage. I definitely think that’s a good look for that combo! Honestly I got some chills after a while with that music choice, kinda had a subtle haunting vibe that really fit the shots.

  10. Blimey, that looks troubling. In the days when you used to have to ruin your images with cheesy effects in camera rather than in Lightroom, Cokin used to do a filter called the Diffractor Cosmos 040 Looks like Fuji have been emulating that as well as film stocks

  11. That's weird, it seems to work for me. Even when the magic lantern overlay is on liveview, I just press the Q Set physical button and from there I tap on the screen to choose different colour balance presets, which include AWB. I always leave my camera on AWB since it works very well. Very true. I've also checked with Fotodiox as they already make a Sony E-mount to M4/3 adapter, as do various other manufacturers. The Sony mount is very similar to the EOS M mount with the same flange focal distance so should be easy to produce an adadpter for EOS M to m4/3, even if it lacks electronic contacts. Fotodiox said they'd talk to the design team and see if they can make such an adapter.

  12. So far I haven't used it for an actual storyboard. I've mostly been playing around with different focal lengths and character blocking.

At least you have a piece of art you can enjoy for your 1400! It’s interesting isn’t it - we discuss image quality from capture devices and how “we” can manipulate it to “our” preferences. It sort of forgets that once it’s in the living room of the consumer who knows what travesties are being applied.

  14. As someone who preordered a Hydrogen and is genuinely quite excited about what it might be able to do, I registered with reduser for a source of information. It is quite astonishing just how poor the quality of discussion over there is (at least compared to here). The only information - other than that from RED itself - consists of wild speculation, absurd hyperbole and seems to be totally dominated by one or two individuals... Not a great public face for a great company producing great products. There is no doubt (in my opinion) that Hydrogen will be something special. But only relative to what phones currently offer. And not necessarily “useful” or “game changing” or even, given time, “unique”. But goodness, anyone naively reading the Hydrogen threads in The Other Place must be totally baffled (one of the latest themes is that you really need 4 - or is it 64? - Hydrogens to really optimise the 3D capabilities - or is that just to feed the world...) Looking forward to seeing what it’ll do however!

  17. An XC with an EF-M mount/APSC sensor would be indeed very good. I am sure it is going to cost at least as much as the XC15 but it will still be a great seller. A mini C line.

  19. There is a PL mount to EOS M adapter, but it's from MTF so it's expensive: https://www.srb-photographic.co.uk/pl-mount-to-canon-eos-m-mtf-camera-adaptor-9290-p.asp I don't know if there are cheaper alternatives. There are PL to EF-M tilt adapters for US$195. I seem to recall non-tilt versions selling for a little over US$100, but I can't find them anymore. Another option is to get a PL to EF adapter for ~US$100 and merely attach that to a dummy EF to EF-M adapter (US$9). The flange focal distance for M4/3 is 19.25mm while the flange focal distance for EF-M is 18mm. So, it should be possible to drill matching holes in a M4/3 mount to match the screws on the EF-M mount and shim the mount ~1.25mm further out. Of course, making the locking pin work is another consideration. Also, safe clearance for the EOSM's EF-M electronic contacts should be considered, to prevent damage.

  21. Well if you have a family it is your job to provide for them. So unfortunately you might end up with a job, your own, or working for a company you hate but. well, it is your Job. But I think, me included, in the US has Way to much stuff. Toys if you want to call it. If a person is not a materialist person you Have time for family and are probably more happy and healthy to boot. But everyone is different and that is what makes life interesting. Out of Likes, but a great write up on your part. I guess I would have to add a sailboat to your wants in the last sentence. That would work.

  22. And to make matters worse most photographers work for a company. And guess who owns the rights to the photos, the Company. Ain't no money in stock photos unless you are nearly a household name that that people go to your website to buy stuff. And to get those type of shots, takes lots of money for gear, to pay models, to rent a Helicopter or fly to China on and on. You aren't going to shoot many Stock photos walking around your own town unless you live in Paris or Rome. And then you are in business, and being in business is not as glamorous as it sounds. Been there done that 3 times in my life. 2 of them incorporated. 10, 12 hours a day or more, maybe 7 days a week. As a Photographer if you are doing weddings, they are Always on the weekend, or own a restaurant etc you will be working 7 days a week. Good way to get divorced, or have a Heart Attack, or both LoL. Speaking of Stock Photos, I do like this one. It is on Adam Lillard's Facebook page.

  23. I use a Blackmagic Video Assist 4K with the X-T2, and I have to start recording on both the camera and the recorder. If I don't press record on the camera, it sends out a worse quality signal. This step is easy to forget, I'm not sure if they fixed this on the X-H1. Also, when recording for a longer period, you will have thermal noise in your F-Log footage. It was not visible with the built in film simulations, only with F-Log. It basicly looks like a lot of hot pixels, but it's only visible in dark shots. Since the X-H1 manages heat better, I believe you won't have this issue there. The biggest problem with X-T2 is that F-Log is kinda broken, the red channel is very problematic, it breaks very easily, which rendered some my footage almost unusable. I tested F-Log coming from the X-H1 and it is WAY cleaner. This is something noone seems to talk about, I had to find this out myself. Oh and if you use film-simulations, the in-camera recordings will be full range, but when you send it over HDMI, it will be video range, so you'll have slightly less precision, if that matters to you. I can't really recommend an external recorder for the X-T2, but a smaller monitor like the SmallHD Focus can be very useful.

It’s on eBay but I only sell in the US. For the amount that eBay and PayPal take from a sale, and for the price of the lens, it’s not worth the paperwork to sell it overseas. If you’re looking for a great Minolta prime, look out for the MD 28mm f/2. I shot this with it on the NX500. I was going for a muted, vintage look, so it isn’t tradition Minolta colors and contrast but it will give you an idea of the lens’ characteristics. There’s also a shot or two from the 24-35mm... the ones of the boardwalk binoculars.

    How would you grade this?

Oh no, haha, I was being snarky. A few of the grades on this thead had pretty aggressive sharpening. Too much and it looks like video and you have to hide it with grain. Grain is really good at hiding artifacts and blown highlights. You have to cheat somewhere in your grade and I like to do it with skin. Pump up the contrast and you can pop the talent without messing with the rest of your image. Love doing it with 8bit log. You can keep all that dynamic range and still have great colors and skintones. Makes the shot look really expensive. Like you had a whole crew and cinema camera.

  28. Unless you're renting an entire set there's not much point. Low end modern zeiss glass isn't very exciting (even the cinema variety). Until you go to Ultra Primes or Master primes they're all pretty dull and lifeless. Rent a 28mm Otus instead. Now that's a cool lens on both aps-c and full frame!

  29. They're not getting away with it. Several videos and discussions about it. Fuji definitely F'ed up. H1 is sold as having superior AF. A firmware fix is bound to come quickly (or sales are going to hurt). I know I'm not be buying one until this is fixed.

  30. No, but I'm definitely considering 15 Stops of dynamic range. ?

  31. Ive done tests and have found when it comes to baked in profiles the 5DIV actually appears to have better IQ than 1DC. I should do a real review/test and see. I haven't tested the 5DIV Canon Log yet. Im sure its great

  32. The next month or so should reveal more information apparently. The problem I have is that the go to source for info about it should be the reduser site but I can't last more than a few more minutes on there because of the sycophancy. I went over there earlier to see what it was all about regarding RED selling the cameras through the Apple store and pretty much did this.
