Fuji X-H1. IBIS, Phase Detect 4K beast?
Mattias Burling and one other reacted to Trek of Joy for a topic
Agreed. Sony lags far behind Fuji in terms of updates and improvements. Improvmevents usually come by the way of new models. And in the case of the play memories apps, features disappear, never to be seen again. My XT2's are so much better since it was released, with AF improvements coming in two different updates. My a7r2/s2 saw an update that improved startup with the usual mystery "minor bugs and fixes." I still can't believe in 2018 they can't even include a intervalometer in any camera - not the $4500 a9, the $3200 a7r3 and now the a73 - something just about every other current mirrorless body has. Stuff like that makes it really hard to stick with Sony. I'm in their camp because their sensors are second to none, but I don't like shooting with them. So yes Fuji sucks for not including video exposure tools, Panasonic sucks because its still using 2009 AF tech in its $2500 bodies while pretending PDAF doesn't exist, Sony sucks for its lack of support across its lines and for fattening the spec sheet while leaving basic usability tools off its bodies and so on. Pick your poison. I am confident the XH1 issues will get sorted, Fuji has done major FW updates across all its models over the years. Even if its 8 months - which I don't think will be the case - its still better than what we see from others. Cheers Chris2 points -

Sony isn't immune to bugs... https://www.eoshd.com/2016/01/sony-fs5-codec-problems-and-4k-ripped-edges-bug/ ..and firmware fixes: https://nofilmschool.com/2016/02/sony-firmware-v1-1-1-fs5-xavc-codec-image-issue Some could also argue they still haven't fixed their color science2 points -
DR100 uses straight sensor processing whereas DR200/400 use off-sensor processor trickery to get that extra DR. My guess is Fuji hasn't compensated for the extra DR settings in video mode (which weren't available on XT2) hence AF struggles at DR200/400 because of this. Surely a firmware update will fix this, in the meantime DR100 seems the only option for AF-C.. annoying but at least looks like we got an explanation for the inconsistent AF reports. someone should shoot this up to Fuji HQ..2 points

dbp says he is in the m43 system (lenses, etc.). So, why do experienced people (owning a m43 camera they talk about) not give him some advice on this? I doubt, someone here had already his hands on a A7 III. Why giving advice with NO CLUE about this camera and considering Sony's well known abysmal quality control and expensive lens line? Why not trying to help him with a recommendation within the m43 universe, so he could save some money and time? Why even speculating on Canon cameras to come in 1/2/3 years?2 points

Just hung this up in the living room. A 4k Hdr tv that looks like a picture/art frame on the wall. It displays an image as long as motion is detected and adjusts its brighness to the ambient light. Extremely believable and love this feature. The reason I mention it here is the 4k hdr. Horrible. I come from a panny plasma and a 65" 4k hdr lg oled. I assumed a 4k hdr panel from samsung would look somewhat respectable. Nope. Turned off all the typical motion, sharpening, contrast, etc... Still horrible. Oversharpened with terrible motion. If this is the type of image folks are used to viewing, no wonder no can ever agree on what cameras look good. Drastic difference in the look of shows I know and you tube camera tests. Shocking a $1400 panel can look this bad in comparison.1 point

This was originally in response to @IronFilm asking in the Blackmagic area about a cheap screen for vlogging on a BMPCC but thought it might have some interest for other cameras too. Plus, I've moved it on to be just a bit more than a vlogging screen as well. So... This is all based around of the 3.5" monitors that are designed for the Raspberry Pi. It is completely barebones but supply it with an HDMI feed and some USB power and it'll do the job for you. I just put it in a cheap phone hotshoe mount and voila, cameras like the GX80 here can have a front facing vlogging screen. If you want to be posh then you can have it in an acrylic case for a tiny bit more ! Because of its resolution, you're only going to want to use it as a framing and a "is this thing on?" aid but if thats all you need then its adequate for that. I've tested it with Panasonic (GX80/G7), Canon (EOS-M), Sony (RX100), Nikon (D500) and Fuji (XT-2) cameras but I can't vouch for it with all cameras. Its got a fairly low res screen but the the cameras I've tested it on scale their output but with the JVC LS300, you have to set it 480 and there may be others out there like that but for £12 the worst thing that can happen is you've got a handy little plug in HDMI cable checker. There are a gazillion sellers so take this one as just an example EDIT >> ORIGINAL EXAMPLE LINK DIDN'T HAVE HDMI SO CHANGED TO NEW EXAMPLE - SHOP AROUND FOR BETTER PRICE THOUGH https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/1080P-IPS-3-5-inch-HDMI-LCD-Screen-Display-for-Raspberry-Pi-w-Acrylic-Case/382391593643?epid=8015535815&hash=item590850aaab So, the additional part is that this morning I've been busy with the gaffa tape and the lateral thinking and turned it into a full blown powered EVF. I'm using the loupe that comes with the Sigma DP0 but any old £12 DSLR one off eBay will do and you can supply power via a usb power bank and in this example I'm even running it off a little box that gives you USB power from 3 AA batteries. Once you have it like this then you can then put it on an arm or whatever to make a fully fledged adjustable system. My loupe has a plate underneath for mounting it to the tripod thread of the camera and a lot of the cheap DSLR loupes have this as well for adjustment which makes it easy to attach an arm. I have to stress that the resolution is not all that so take it on the merits of it being a cheap and cheerful way of adding a vlogging screen or a more flexible EVF than your DSLR offers for those occasional times when you may need them without having to invest a load of money and you won't go far wrong. For the LS300 though, which has an utterly abysmal EVF that is so bad that you will actually question whether its faulty, then this combo actually completely smokes it. To recap Screen : £12 Loupe : £12 Power : £3 Mount : £31 point

Which Sony 1080p cameras have gotten 4K in firmware updates.. oh thats right, none. Ok which Sony cameras have gotten useful features added... oh.. Ok, I got one. Which Sony cameras have had regular issues and bugs fixed...?... hmm.. 8 months vs Eternity I own a Sony and zero Fuji cameras. And Ive bought at least ten times as many Sonys vs any other brand over the years. They are nice. But one thing they really suck absolute balls at imo. That is Firmware Updates. Fuji on the other hand is leading the pack there. And given that this is a Fuji thread I will say that the A7iii can go suck it. I would never say that in a Sony thread, but here I can say it. Im am so under impressed about the A7iii that I find it almost comical that people are so extremely excited. Its a cool camera but the hype is so massive. I mean are there even any good reviews on the Sony out yet? (no, the Vegas reviews do not count at all. Thats just promo material. Im talking user reviews.)1 point -

I don't use the expanded DR settings myself either on the X-T2 but a "positive" that can be gained from this issue is that it may actually offer some insight for Fuji regarding why the AF seems to be gathering reports as being inferior on the X-H1. It might not just be the DR100/200/400 setting thats impacting the AF but an indication of an interaction between certain image processing tasks and performance. I wouldn't wait for 8 months with this one if I was them though as that A7iii is batting its eyelashes and showing a lot of ankle to potential X-H1 owners right now.1 point -

Sony doesn't fix jack in my experience, they are the absolute worst in that respect imo. Not bugs and definitely not adding stuff like Fuji and Blackmagic. I can confirm I also discovered that DR400 autofocus inconsistency was the problem, and when on DR100 it is really good from my tests. DR200 also seems good and I'm unsure if it's the same as DR100 or slightly worse at this point. Seems like this is something that can be fixed. Is there a technical reason why performance would be worse at DR400?1 point -

Best photo/video hybrid?
mkabi reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
You make a good point, but.. he is talking a 2000 dollar m4/3 camera. If you are willing to spend that much why not look at all the options. Unless you buy new lenses, it is pretty damn easy to sell them for what you paid for them used. I doubt many on here has a bunch of native lenses anyways. I see no reason if you have a GH4 to even buy a GH5. What Really are you gaining other than IBIS. 10 bit. Hell we have been using 8bit for I bet as long as most of you on here have even lived! It has seemed to have worked hasn't it. HDR, hell like others have said, I don't know Anyone that even has a 4k TV let alone one that does HDR, I don't have one. So why bother going in debt for something 99.9% of the people can't even see.. So OK my advice, Don't buy a damn thing. Learn how to shoot. Buy better lighting, better audio, better tripod and fluid head. Probably the best gain. And if you are making Video mostly your income you really Need a Cine camera. Even if it is a Canon C100. By the time you rig a DSLR or a Mirrorless it is well, pretty stupid looking, and it still sucks controls wise. If you want to play with the big boys you have to have big boy toys. If not they will probably always win.1 point -

I have used the 502 and loved it. Great monitor, very clear image on the right conditions. With strong sunlight, even with the hood, it's difficult to see. Should be OK I think. Off the shelf ones like this one here have quite respectable lag times (certainly at lower res) so hopefully the optimisation that LukiLink have described doing to their version will be even more impressive.1 point

It seems that SmallHD have discontinued this model, probably to have a new one with the touch screen interface. It is a good price for what it is (and it isn't the SDI version, just HDMI In and Out), when I bought the Focus, that was almost 300euros more, so no comparison. I haven't use this one though, so I can't really tell about the differences. Spec wise, the 501 is 1080 vs 720 for the focus, pixel density 441 vs 294 (PPI) but the Focus is 800nits vs 400, and it is almost half the weight (both pretty big deal, and 720 on 5" is pretty good, alright).1 point

Cheap bokeh setup?
webrunner5 reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
Just to put some meat on the bones (or Metabones in this case) of what you could expect from the Sigma 18-35 in terms of DOF on a Micro4/3 camera when coupled with a speedbooster, I've just gone outside and done this quick test for you with a Panasonic GX80. This is it at its minimum focus distance wide open at 18mm, focused on the 0 of the scale. With the effect of the Speedbooster this is f1.2 at an equivalent FOV of 27mm. This next one is it at its minimum focus distance wide open at 35mm, focused on the 0 of the scale. With the effect of the Speedbooster this is f1.2 at an equivalent FOV of 51mm. And this last one is it at its roughly 2 feet wide open at 18mm, focused on the 0 of the scale. With the effect of the Speedbooster this is f1.2 at an equivalent FOV of 51mm. In all instances, the ColorChecker is 6 inches behind the focus point (i.e. 0 on the Spyder Lenscal) With a roughly 2 inch DOF at this aperture even on a Micro4/3, you might want to stop down a bit for run and gun1 point -

Anyone with YT Red want to do a quick review of his videos to see which are sponsored? IIRC it indicates which ones are. That kind of attention must be a sponsorship of some kind - Casey has good commercial instincts and isn't afraid to ask for money.. There was a video back when he was raising money for Beme, and Casey told the story that his mentor said something like 'make a list of all the people you can ask for money and then call them all and ask' and Casey made the calls and got some investment, and on the back of the fact he actually called people and got investors his mentor also invested.. IIRC - I do a bit of stuff with start-ups so the respect for action caught my attention.1 point

Fuji X-H1. IBIS, Phase Detect 4K beast?
TheRenaissanceMan reacted to KitaCam for a topic
On a positive note, it's true, Eterna looks really great, really really great. BTW you can't use ISO < 800 with Eterna as per using Flog. If you're going to use an external recorder (why bother now - ok exposure tools like FC an zebra's - c'mon the FW update) get a straight connector HDMI cable not one with a 90degree bend as it won't play nice with the (sensible) accompanying screw-in HDMI cable holder. Yes I've broken one HDMI port on the X-T2 before with very light use. As others have said, the camera is a beefier X-T2. Build quality is excellent, it's noticeably heavier, but frankly very quick to acclimatise to and very similar. Is it better/worse, I prefer it certainly and not just because it's new, however, I would always use the X-T2 with battery grip. With the X-H1, I prefer without the grip (spare batteries in pocket) as it's certainly not subtle with the grip attached and say 16-55. I love this camera with the now brilliantly stabilised 35mm 1.4. Touchscreen performance, hmm, not spectacular. Certainly room for improvement here. Spare batteries, it's true that you'll need a few without the grip. Not really a massive headache imho. The Q-button, hmm, not sure this is placed in the most sensible position (on the thumb rest) as it frequently get's knocked/activated Exposure compensation (photos) button, again, not loving this location/button type at present. Ergonomically not great for me at least. Depending on how you use the camera will determine how big a deal is this, for some loads, for me not really if i'm honest. More testing reveals that Autofocus is in fact not toilet. Could you rely on it 100% for more critical shots, of course not, not at this stage of FW development, but despite some strong words on the topic, it's really not appalling and certainly does deliver wonderful transitions (not always noticeably stepped btw) at times. I feel it is strongly influenced by the amount of available light, which perhaps is not that surprising. Is there room for performance improvements, I certainly hope so and based on past experience believe it will happen. Fuji have created a great camera here, if you like Fuji, you'll like this, as after all we put up with the evolving software for the pleasure of the hardware right? Which other cameras feel this solid/crafted within a reasonable price bracket? How to solve how to switch between video and photo mode via the top rotating toggle (and loss of 1/48th shutter speed), buy two bodies of course. I see the frustration with this, would be nice to have a short cut to directly jump into video record from photo mode. Question, probably very simple, does anyone know how to avoid (turn-off) focus magnification punch in when in manual focus mode? I seem to be able to disable this in photo but not video mode.1 point -
@mercer. I got the 24-35! Yes I have installed the hack, however I am not sure if I will really use it. I used something similar on the sony6000 and didn't get all the color back. To be honest I don't trust a small codec to capture all the informations when they are compressed. Still it is a nice hack! But natural seems pretty nice too. My picture was shot with the sigma 17-35 1.8 and an old canon 500d.1 point

Sony NEX5N or NEX5R or NEX5T all make very nice pictures and are priced at around 150eur for a body. Screen flips and can accept a loupe too. Tech heads will moan about the avchd codec but it's the same codec they gave c100 and fs100 users for in body recording. Add a focal reducer adaptor and he will have an extra stop of light and will gain full frame field of view from your lenses meaning a basic 35mm/2.8 russian lens will become a 25mm/2 lens. Wow! I had no idea that such adapters existed. Thanks! Here's the Fotodiox version, by the way. Indeed, both mounts have the same flange focal distance (18mm), plus the EF-M has a slightly wider throat diameter at 47mm, compared to the 46.1mm throat of the E-mount. So, it should be a little easier to make a M4/3 adapter for the EOSM. Can you post your Fotodiox contact info? I would like to "second" your proposal for such an adapter. By the way, much of this thread involves shooting with a "Super-8m" crop on the EOSM. I would like to enjoy the same HD resolution and raw benefits, but shoot with a Super-16 crop. Would that be the equivalent of the 3x crop? If so, can I shoot that crop on the EOSM with full HD, raw, 24p at 10-bit? Thanks!1 point

You're my newest best friend here. ? I was looking at the Rokinon XEEN series but at that point as might as well just buy an Alexa and sell the blood of my first born child. ? I've done a general search for anamorphic on a PL mount online, but since I have little experience with anamorphic I really have no idea what qualities to look for. I'm finding a lot of affordable anamorphic projector lens, but I'm assuming that won't work? I really like the look and quality you got with your Bolex, but I don't know if thats unique to the wider format or the properties and characteristics of that particular lens? You definitely have the most experience with this that I've come across online. I'd love if you could share some of your knowledge, like requirements to get the NX1 to conform with anamorphic, what systems are valued as the gems, what systems are considered acceptable, which ones to avoid. I wish we lived near eachother, I'd love to talk shop and explore NX1/anamorphic setups with you, because above anything else I've seen in terms of making the NX1 produce a more filmic quality, I think you are onto something with the biggest potential. I'd like to see some results with some diffusion filters on the end of your Bolex lens, as well as shooting faces with diffused lighting. I think this trifecta is the 3 combo power punch into filmic quality on the NX1. And then there's this photo: And a recent shoot using faux cinescope in Premeire:1 point -
