  1. This is the first documentary that I have done. It was shot on Sony A7sii, Panasonic GH5, Sony Rx100m4 and a Phantom 4 pro. Would love to hear your thoughts! Editing a 30 minute piece is soooo much work. I applaud people who work in this format every day!

  2. 3x + the 1.6x crop of the sensor. If you want s16 and RAW, just get the Blackmagic Pocket or Micro. It reliably shoots Full HD in RAW as well as ProRes, with a s16 sensor.

  3. Yes, even at DR100, it looks herky-jerky. Is that somehow usable? There's a difference between saying that it's less bad at DR100, and saying that CAF for video is actually usable. Also, I find it disturbing that folks seem to be almost preemptively anticipating problems as inevitable; that they'll later be fixed in firmware as part of Fuji's world-class Kaizen. My understanding is that Kaizen (the Deming cycle, Toyota Production System, call-it-what-you-will) was meant to discover and prevent flaws like this from being pushed into market in the first place; not to fix errors that were sloppily discovered only after the release. A more accurate term for what Blackmagic, Sony, and now Fuji and others are doing is the well-known strategy of "Release it Now; Fix it Later." For $1800, I expected more. (And a headphone jack.)

  4. still trying to figure out, if @jonpais has a personal problem with Fujifilm or is just trolling. Anyway, the thread got absolutely useless through input of people just repeating what they heard somewhere and not trying the camera. There is no gain for me visiting this thread, so if anyone has any questions about the camera (I own it for nearly 2 weeks now, so have a bit of experience) feel free to ask. But link me or pm me, because I don't think I will visit the thread anymore.

  5. No. If manufacturers would instead build better cameras from the start with longer support cycles I believe most people wouldn't feel the urge (as much) to replace it with something new and shiny. The tech blogs/journalists do not help. At the end of the day they're not your pal. Not to sound hypocritical but I've picked up the Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k not because it was a camera that as released in 2017, but because I like what it has to offer my workflow and ultimately the image is is priority one for me. I will end up sticking with it for a good while and learn how to get the most out of it despite newer models sure to be released and other new cameras hitting the scene too. Oh well. This philosophy is better for the consumer, but not so great for the manufacturer who needs to keep rolling in that dough cycle after cycle. But I don't care about them more than I care about my own needs, and neither should anyone else unless they own stock in a particular company. These companies have no shortage of profits. They don't need anyone's charity. This very thread is a prime example of the negativity that comes from fanboying way too hard over something that's only trying to meet a small niche. People end up placing more importance in things rather than each other, when in any other circumstance that wouldn't be the case. Even though no one likes being reminded (or preached to) of that it's important to stay grounded and focus on what truly matters in life. I doubt anyone on their deathbed was like, "Damnit, I should have gone with the Fuji".

  6. Which Sony 1080p cameras have gotten 4K in firmware updates.. oh thats right, none. Ok which Sony cameras have gotten useful features added... oh.. Ok, I got one. Which Sony cameras have had regular issues and bugs fixed...?... hmm.. 8 months vs Eternity I own a Sony and zero Fuji cameras. And Ive bought at least ten times as many Sonys vs any other brand over the years. They are nice. But one thing they really suck absolute balls at imo. That is Firmware Updates. Fuji on the other hand is leading the pack there. And given that this is a Fuji thread I will say that the A7iii can go suck it. I would never say that in a Sony thread, but here I can say it. Im am so under impressed about the A7iii that I find it almost comical that people are so extremely excited. Its a cool camera but the hype is so massive. I mean are there even any good reviews on the Sony out yet? (no, the Vegas reviews do not count at all. Thats just promo material. Im talking user reviews.)

  9. Why the hell someone at Atomos isn't going "You know what, that 4 year old Ninja Star product could do with an updated version that does 4K" I just dont know. They do a lot of stuff aimed at other cameras like GH5 and even LS300 and yet there is this Canon shaped gift horse giving them a massive toothy grin and they sail right by. Maybe at NAB they might release one and shut me up!!

  10. Of course not, we are all waiting for the Zacuto shotout! Seriously, the C200 is on no man's land right now. I have a week long shooting with it on a couple of weeks from now, but the lack of a middle codec is huge for me, as shooting raw is like 0,3% of my workflow, and if I need more, we always rent camera/lenses anyway (C300mkII is just excellent for most jobs). I would like to have reliable touch focus in my next video camera, though, there are rumors for "a new C camera, and another videocamera that don't belong to the C line". C100mkIII and C300mkIII are rumored, and I have posted here a patent for an XC type camera, with IL(interchangeable lenses). The oldest C camera is the C100 right now, but it could make sense to see something like a C400, and a lowly XC camera with EF-M mount. The second could be an instant hit (if have touch focus and good old Canon 1080p and some kind of 4K). An XC camera with the 22mm and the 11-22mm could be amazing for most jobs, and of course there is a native adapter as well.

  13. Panasonic are on their 6th GH release that they've been working on improving for the past 10 years. It's a video-oriented product & they also have a pro video department to work with.. Fujifilm is a stills oriented camera maker with X-H1 being their second serious attempt at video on a hybrid camera. They're essentially newbies to the playing-field. Personally, i think they've done remarkably well considering this context and they are known to not abandon their cameras which is always reassuring (indeed what other company adds 4k to a camera 2 years down the line... and for free?!). That being said if you want to stay on the safe side, it's always good to wait until a company irons out bugs before jumping on first or second gen products.

  14. Seeing how this is the beginning for Fujifilms video endeavours I think it’s ok and it will get sorted. The X100 and X-Pro 1 has abysmal autofocus and plenty firmware problems in the beginning. Today I would argue that the X-Pro 1 represents amazing value second hand. It was updated into a really excellent camera over the years. My X-Pro 2 has had its AF system updated twice since it came out. The X-H1 again has a new system with far more detecting areas and, with optimisation, should be far more reliable and faster than the already good XT2/Xpro2. It is true that early adopters perhaps shouldn’t be beta testers but it’s tough competition. The excellent Hasselblad X1D had plenty of problems in the beginning but I think most has been fixed through updates. They could have released it a year later but the camera still worked, one could still make pictures with it. I think with this sort of cycle there is a choice. Im trouble by all the bloggers that shout for an articulated screen. Of course it’s good if you’re a vlogger. For me it would be a deal breaker, I can’t stand those screens.

  15. What happened to Bohus? Thanks for the link. I am fairly sure that there is a 3x crop mode in Magic Lantern, but I don't know what resolutions are possible, nor if one can shoot in that mode and not suffer pink/green focus pixels. It is difficult to determine Magic Lantern capabilities as the only mention of features is sometimes spread over many threads on their forum, with some threads having 60+ pages of posts. Well, if Metabones doesn't make a speed booster that mounts on the EOSM, some of their competitors already got the EOSM covered. Plus, if an EOSM-m4/3 gets made, that would allow the use of a lot of m4/3 focal reducers on the EOSM, including Metabones. Metabones should actually make their $peedboosters with interchangeable camera mounts, so you only have to spend $500+ for one set of optics.

  16. Oh my God don't get me started on Cars! I have owned close to 300 cars in my life from Ferrari's to Fiats. And no I have never owned a car dealership or had a Dealer License. I have only owned 3 new cars in my life. But wow I have owned some crazy nice cars. Way more foreign cars than American cars. But when I was young, younger, really neat cars were damn cheap to buy. Especially Foreign high end ones. Lambos, Ferrari, Jags, Porsche on and on. They were too expensive to pay someone to fix them, and rich people just sold them cheap and bought a new one, or a newer one. And I made good money, and had the credit line to buy them. And buy them I did. I just happened to be able to fix them mechanically. And a friend of mine owned a body shop. Bingo. The rest is history. Porsche was probably my favorite, like 18 of them, Lambos next, 7 of them, Corvette, I have owned 22 of them, nearly every model they ever made, and little Fiat Abarths. Rusty little buggers, Alphas, Ferrari's were nice, had 6 of them, but damn stupid expensive parts cost on them. Enzo would Only deal with you when racing season was over. A lot of stuff the factory had to Make for you. No spares. Neat cars for the money you could buy them for, but not fixing them LoL. You are not working on these new cars anymore anyhow. I can't even stand to look at car auctions on TV. Cars that cost a million dollars now I could buy for 15, 20 thousand dollars years ago. 75 thousand dollars Corvettes today were like 4,000 dollars. I feel sorry for young people now. Anything old now is collectable, when I was young old stuff you could hardly give it away. Goofy world. I just sold my 2008 Nissan 350Z NISMO end of last year. Damn nice car. Probably my last boy racer car I will ever own I guess. Driving a 1998 Chevy 3500 Dually extended pickup truck now with a 454 cu in in it. Original paint on it. Zero Rust. It was a Florida car. Using it to pull a 5th wheel camper RV. Gas Hog from hell. I sold my 36' Class A motor home. Just too many goofy things to go wrong on them. And hardly anyone will work on them. Too big. And I am too old now to work on them myself.

  18. Agreed. Sony lags far behind Fuji in terms of updates and improvements. Improvmevents usually come by the way of new models. And in the case of the play memories apps, features disappear, never to be seen again. My XT2's are so much better since it was released, with AF improvements coming in two different updates. My a7r2/s2 saw an update that improved startup with the usual mystery "minor bugs and fixes." I still can't believe in 2018 they can't even include a intervalometer in any camera - not the $4500 a9, the $3200 a7r3 and now the a73 - something just about every other current mirrorless body has. Stuff like that makes it really hard to stick with Sony. I'm in their camp because their sensors are second to none, but I don't like shooting with them. So yes Fuji sucks for not including video exposure tools, Panasonic sucks because its still using 2009 AF tech in its $2500 bodies while pretending PDAF doesn't exist, Sony sucks for its lack of support across its lines and for fattening the spec sheet while leaving basic usability tools off its bodies and so on. Pick your poison. I am confident the XH1 issues will get sorted, Fuji has done major FW updates across all its models over the years. Even if its 8 months - which I don't think will be the case - its still better than what we see from others. Cheers Chris

  19. I posted a comment on one of their youtube videos where they demonstrate the adapter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPseT8Ok3EA&lc= I think the only way to get close to a 3x crop (which is approx Super 16 size) is to increase the horizontal resolution to 2.5k (using 5x zoom mode). However at that resolution you only get about 3 seconds record time, and the vertical res is limited to 1080. The resolution I like to use with movie crop mode (1800x1024) gives you 4.66x crop which is a bit larger than super 8. It's closer to 1/1.7", same as the Pentax Q-S1 sensor. I actually emailed the metabones sales team last week about their plans to make a speed booster for the EOS M mount (since it would be useful for the Canon M50 too), and they say they plan to do it but can't provide further info at this stage. If they do make it, that would be one way of getting super 16mm field of view on the EOS M! Nice to hear MLV App reads the white balance properly for you. Did you change any settings in the program? On the PC version it always defaults to 6000k. With exposure I have the zebras set to LumaFast, over 99% which I think is the default - apart from that I judge exposure by eye. As long as I'm not blowing out highlights with this zebra setting, the image seems fine. In the Destination Docklands video I posted above, you can see instances of blown out highlights with harsh clipping where I shoot directly at the sun or backlit clouds (visible on the cover image). I could see the zebras in liveview when shooting that shot but it was impossible to avoid.

  23. There are two options when filming in crop mode (also called 1x1 crop mode to avoid confusion): 1) There's "movie crop mode" (selectable from the magic lantern menu), which I keep referring to in my previous posts on this thread (see my "Destination Docklands" video on previous page for a demonstration of this mode). The max res is 1800x1024. There are no focus pixels if you shoot in 10 or 12 bit lossless raw. This is my favourite mode as it gives you pretty much the proper framing in liveview with a realtime preview, and the record times are generally reasonable at that resolution. 2) There's 5x zoom mode (selectable by pressing zoom twice on Canon's liveview touchscreen). This allows you to shoot at a higher max resolution of 2520x1080. In 10 bit lossless raw you get around 3 seconds of record time at this resolution, so it's not so convenient for most uses. Also liveview is zoomed in a fair amount, so the framing isn't right - though at least it's realtime. @Matt Kieley mentions there's a 3x crop + the 1.6x crop (from the aps-c sensor). That's correct and adds up to a 4.8x crop in comparison to 35mm full frame (i.e. 3 x 1.6 = 4.8). That applies to both crop modes mentioned above, but the exact crop factor will actually depend on the resolution you're shooting at, because 1x1 crop mode uses 1x1 pixel interpolation (there is no pixel binning). With movie crop mode at 1800x1024 resolution, the crop from 35mm full frame is 4.66x. With 5x zoom mode at 2520x1080 the crop is 3.33x I've just checked and there is indeed a 3x3 "crop mode". This is completely different to the 1x1 crop modes mentioned above! The "3x3" refers to the fact that the camera is doing 3x3 pixel binning. 3x3 crop mode allows you to shoot with the whole aps-c sensor width. To activate, you have to enable crop_rec module under the modules menu (using the experimental firmware). In the Canon menu you need to switch to 720p 50/60 fps recording. Then you can activate it in the magic lantern menu by selecting "crop mode". However, the video quality isn't very good. The difference between this 3x3 mode and the regular full aps-c recording mode (which apparently uses 3x5 pixel binning) seems marginal. I think there's slightly less moire. The max resolution is 1736x688 which gives you a 2.5:1 aspect ratio. The focus dots do make a comeback, but they can be removed with MLVapp.

  31. I believe you Im just talking about my needs and experiences. Ive never challenged anyone, thats just something the angry fellow makes up in his head. Must be the sun down there. I see no difference between them worth mentioning. I see zero reason to play with shadows and highlights in camera since I have been able to replicate it in post. That doesn't mean you didn't see a difference. We simply might have been under different circumstances, expose differently, or edit differently. Or we just have different bars when it comes to what we view as a significant difference. Its just like when I said Im glad they stuck with a flip screen, because I have much more use for that than a fully articulating. Some would just chalk it up under "a different preference". And a few angry fellows will go ape shit and try everything to ridicule it, convince me its "wrong" or just act up like a baby.

  32. Out of likes, this is the best advice so far today. Hype and new releases are never gonna be the way to reliability. If one really wants good video, a video camera might be even better (haven't watched Tonys video but I did glance at all the hate the video got since the response videos about it got more viral than his review. I wonder if the A7iii is the new NX1 which will be brought up like a broken record in every single thread.)

  34. Ok.......back to it for those interested in the X-H1.. Couple of further relevant experiences: 1.) Rollin' shutter in 4K 24p. This is completely anecdotal and not measured/timed, though I can imagine some might think this is an issue for moderate speed switching of angles etc. i.e. It's certainly noticeable if not handled with care 2.) Memory cards are an issue, certainly with the 200Mbits/s recording. Whilst my Lexar Professional x1000 cards seem to work fine for short periods, they also cause abrupt stops to recording every so often. Probably wise to follow (expensive) fuji recommended SD card guidance here (http://www.fujifilm.com/support/digital_cameras/compatibility/card/x/)

  37. Co-sign here as well on the A7 III. i've actually spent some time on a unit at a local preview event.. and was so severely underwhelmed by it. The menu is just a total nightmare to navigate. Endless side-scrolling. Doesn't help the touchscreen doesn't work in menu navigation. Actually the touchscreen functionality is sort of a joke.. you can't even pinch zoom on playback.. virtually no gestures. Just touch focus and double tap. The EVF hasn't evolved since the II series, same aging 100mb XAVC-S codec, it's got an OLPF. I wasn't even that impressed with the new AF system, couldn't get eye AF to work in video either (although could be user error). I tried the XH1 an hour later for the 1st time and felt immediately at home (ergonomically & functionally) was instantly reminded why i love Fuji and dislike Sony. Keep in mind this is without even going into color science, or IQ...etc just shooting experience, design philosophy & handling. PS: no horse in the race either as i don't own a Fuji atm (my XT2 & primes was just stolen during holiday in Morroco )

  38. 8 months? Fuji are pretty responsive imo: - XT2 was released Sep.8 2016 - First XT2 update was announced Oct.31 2016 and was released Nov.29 2016: http://www.fujifilm.com/news/n161031_02.html No company is immune to bugs/firmware updates these days.. and early adopters are (unfortunately) prone to dealing with them. Let's not play the blame game. Buyers of gear need to inform themselves before purchase and make their own decisions. Personally, i don't think shooting at DR100 is that big an issue. Might even go forward with my XH1 purchase now that the bug is identified..

  39. DR100 uses straight sensor processing whereas DR200/400 use off-sensor processor trickery to get that extra DR. My guess is Fuji hasn't compensated for the extra DR settings in video mode (which weren't available on XT2) hence AF struggles at DR200/400 because of this. Surely a firmware update will fix this, in the meantime DR100 seems the only option for AF-C.. annoying but at least looks like we got an explanation for the inconsistent AF reports. someone should shoot this up to Fuji HQ..

  40. Paper and pencil will always be the quickest way to get things from your brain to materilization. You are using different centers of your brain doing this, as opposed to other methods like navigating an app. But as far as refinement, polish and the details of focal length, sun direction/light source, this app looks promising. I'm going to try to find something similar for Andriod...

  41. This may be the case and the device may turn out to be awesome. I think most reasonable people can accept the time it takes to develop technology like this, especially as a mom and pop venture, but that's no excuse for long periods of silence. Does it take a lot of time to jump online and post a weekly status report? A paragraph or two? You're sitting on people's hard earned money, they deserve updates just as any investor would and typically demands. Had I been working on a project for work and gone silent in communicating status with my director I would probably end up getting fired. Do what you want with your own money, but you have certain obligations tied with investment. When you have to repeatedly apologize to your backers, you're doing something wrong. This is good news for the product and I'm interested to see what it offers, but I'm hoping the creators can pull away with some valuable take aways on better PR practices. Again, I dont think anyone was asking for much.

  42. Just contrast it to the term "surge". Even a 5sec short is almost insignificant amount of energy compared to what is stored in the battery, I was just referring to the common perception that shorting a battery must draw a "huge amount of power" compared to normal use since it draws max amount of current. A surge, even if it where a lot higher current during startup does not really draw a huge amount of power overall. But as with shorting a battery wear and tear does come into the calculation. My point was that surge is insignificant overall unless you use it for 5sec every time, and by that point it's normal startup time gonna be more significant anyway. And probably hospital bill due to epilepsy.

Just to put some meat on the bones (or Metabones in this case) of what you could expect from the Sigma 18-35 in terms of DOF on a Micro4/3 camera when coupled with a speedbooster, I've just gone outside and done this quick test for you with a Panasonic GX80. This is it at its minimum focus distance wide open at 18mm, focused on the 0 of the scale. With the effect of the Speedbooster this is f1.2 at an equivalent FOV of 27mm. This next one is it at its minimum focus distance wide open at 35mm, focused on the 0 of the scale. With the effect of the Speedbooster this is f1.2 at an equivalent FOV of 51mm. And this last one is it at its roughly 2 feet wide open at 18mm, focused on the 0 of the scale. With the effect of the Speedbooster this is f1.2 at an equivalent FOV of 51mm. In all instances, the ColorChecker is 6 inches behind the focus point (i.e. 0 on the Spyder Lenscal) With a roughly 2 inch DOF at this aperture even on a Micro4/3, you might want to stop down a bit for run and gun

  48. If you are using the GH5, if you engage the EXT TEL option it will crop the sensor and leave about what you need for a 1" C-Mount Lens and it will save you about a stop of light over using a 1.4x optical extender. If the EXT TEL crop is not enough, you can also engage the IBIS / sensor image stabilization and it will crop even more. I have an Olympus 1.4x MTF extender and it is designed to go inside of the lens it attaches to so it will not work with a C-Mount lens. There is an advantage to using full gate 6k recording when scanning the full sensor readout so in that case having an optical extender that allows you to cover the whole MTF sensor may have resolution benefits, but many C-Mount lens are not designed to resolve 6k, let alone 4k, so you may find using the extender hurts resolution more that if you just record 4k cropped without it.

  49. Other than the 2 you've described... I doubt it. What you could possibly do is... take another system's teleconverter that's both able to adapt C-mount and adapt to M4/3? E.g. the Sigma APO TC 1.4x DG in EF mount. EF-mount can be adapted to M43 and is able to adapt C-mount itself. Atleast... that's my theory... (might be too much protruding parts to adapt the shallow C-mount adapter though).
