  1. I don't know what's going on with you but over the last few months I've noticed you've gotten quick to become aggressive. No one here is out to get you. Just because some people don't find certain features useful doesn't it mean it's an attack on you. Just like how AF isn't a priority feature for you, lack of 10bit might not be a deal breaker for others. Repeating the same things over and over isn't going to change people's minds.

  2. THIS. I was that guy - I did my research, bought the XC10 and then read the 50+ page XC10 thread on this board to try and learn how to get the most out of it. The purchase was one of the top 10 most expensive things I've bought in my life and the result of much research and conversations with my significant other to get financial approval, and by the end of the thread I thought that I'd f*cked it up, both for buying the wrong camera and also not realising it was only worth about a third of new price on the second-hand market. Now I know that not only had most of the critical people in that thread never even seen the camera in real life, but that many criticisms were factually incorrect (ie, they hadn't even read the spec sheet), they don't actually know much about film-making, and are just aggressive ass-hats. But I didn't know that at the time. In terms of what that means for this forum - I registered to every other film-making forum before joining this one. I read all threads on this board with the assumption that every second person can't read, can't make films, and is unpleasant. I don't have that mindset on any of the other forums I'm on - it may not be related but they're all industry forums where almost every single person is courteous, respectful, and tries not to talk out of their a**es. That's why I had a look here today. I literally thought "I'll have a look in that thread - let's see if there's any chance that there's usable info there - I'll read the last page and if not then I won't bother reading any further".

  3. Well that was the guy who hacked the GH2... I assume he has some contacts? As deezid said, the 6K anamorphic mode seems to have less in camera sharpening... so with a good downscale, you can probably get some cinematic 2K/3K. Now I only shoot 1920x810 2:35 on my 5D3, so I agree 1080p is usually more than enough. But with the GH5... the softer 6K anamorphic with IBIS is definitely a selling point that the more expensive GH5s cannot do.

    NX2 rumors

People on eBay right now when they try to outbid EOSHD members for used NX1's.

    NX2 rumors

Nope - No improved RS No sound (at the moment) No 30/48/50/60 or higher fps Same miserable failure in low-light as generally known No DIS (but lens stabilization + AF working) No overheating encountered (till now) Not coming before or on April first... ...but the undefeated detail and sharpness king for 4K beauty shots in controlled light and daylight scenarios...and ridiculously maleable in post, even in the eyes of professionally working picky VFX and grading experts...

  6. If I can rent one I can compare to the rolls of s16 Eterna 250D I have in my freezer (stocked up when it was discontinued)

  7. That guy is the main, pretty much Only moderator on there. I have seen him say some total Jack Ass stuff on there. I am sure he is a smart guy, but rumors are a dime a dozen. If you want to take the word of Another website, A Rumor site at that, and put it on Your website as Gospel, yeah he is a Jack Ass. I Never go to that stupid website anymore ever. Same with DVXuser anymore. They overall are a total joke, other than a few people now. It used to be good, well better is a Better word, but now... I think most of the really smart, make a living people don't come to Any of these forums often. They are too busy making money, putting food on the table, talking to others that are experts on email, or the phone, Not on Personal View! There is a TV show called the "View" that sort of reminds me of that website!

  8. Eva1 owner here! Truly an amazing cinema camera. It’s definitely in the Varicam range of image quality!

  9. Could someone with the camera shoot a second or two with for example Eterna in default and then the same scene with lifted shadows and different DR setting. And then share the clips? Would be interesting to see if there truly is a difference or if its replicable in post.

  10. All about plausible deniability isn't it ? I might go with "Remember when said I fancied an iPhone X dear? Well, good news, I've found something cheaper so I'm actually saving us money here". Although 3D cats could actually also be just as effective. I was thinking about the GoPro fusion as VR does fascinate me but if I'm going to flush money down the drain on something with a completely uncertain adoption fate then it might be better to be in on the ground floor of something new with the Hydrogen. Although by the time RED ship it, I might only exist in virtual holographic form myself!

    Samsung "The Frame"

Just hung this up in the living room. A 4k Hdr tv that looks like a picture/art frame on the wall. It displays an image as long as motion is detected and adjusts its brighness to the ambient light. Extremely believable and love this feature. The reason I mention it here is the 4k hdr. Horrible. I come from a panny plasma and a 65" 4k hdr lg oled. I assumed a 4k hdr panel from samsung would look somewhat respectable. Nope. Turned off all the typical motion, sharpening, contrast, etc... Still horrible. Oversharpened with terrible motion. If this is the type of image folks are used to viewing, no wonder no can ever agree on what cameras look good. Drastic difference in the look of shows I know and you tube camera tests. Shocking a $1400 panel can look this bad in comparison.

  12. This is the first documentary that I have done. It was shot on Sony A7sii, Panasonic GH5, Sony Rx100m4 and a Phantom 4 pro. Would love to hear your thoughts! Editing a 30 minute piece is soooo much work. I applaud people who work in this format every day!

  13. Yeah I dont think they ever tried to emulate exactly with Acros, velvia, etc. Its more a naming thing with a hint of those stocks character. And I also agree on the less need for post to save skin approach. I gave up dialing down contrast and saturation a long time ago. My philosophy is that someone have spent alot of time and money on the baked in curves. And they are probably a better starting point than what I can get. On fuji I usually pick a look in camera and only do minor luma tweaks in post. Looks great imo.

  14. And if I had to hazard a guess, then I suspect if you did the same trick with the ribbon cable I've marked here with a star on this GX80/85 motherboard picture then you'd have yourself a MIC input on those as well....

  15. I have been using the rig in the attached photo lately. To make the rig more stable, you should position the weight as spread out as possible. Putting the powerbank on the end of the rods makes a big differenc, and it's also nice to have it powering the camera. The mid handle is in the centre of gravity which makes it better to handle. I attach the front handle when I want to shoulder mount it. All together the pieces cost about $150 from eBay

  16. I'm afraid they would even charge much more if they would call it Mini-Eva... LOL So, GH5S is not actually a bad denomination choice to state it quite frankly and pretty straightforward. I am personally done with smartass manoeuvres from business players trying their best to go and get deeper from my indie pocket. Nuff said, Panasonic is usually a decent brand. Even though, that premium fee is not the best signal under such policy. IMHO that's a business mistake. So, in this perspective because 2500 bucks for this outstanding machine it is still a bargain anyways, I am really not surprised with the clientele reaction on GH5S sales. With IBIS, focus hack results (AF mantra has been a sales distaster IMNSHO) or changing contrast AF with DFD technology for a most accurate autofocus proposal indeed and the same price of GH5, this camera would be a terrifying hit, count on it : ) In any case, it is the best cinema camera out there for the price, no doubts on it. If you can only buy one, buy this toy and you won't have buyer remorse at all but a purchase which will heedfully convert in your utmost investment to date. Dare yourself and you'll see the real meaning of this statement, not only virtual words somehow addressed in any tech forum ;-) Don's fully right... This cinematic device is the best tool available nowadays to shoot a feature with. At this price range and hybrid (I'd rather call GH5S 'handy' : D instead) class ride. E :-)

    NX1 RAW VIDEO???

April 1st is calling "fool's day" for a reason! If your system isn't right for you anymore, nothing will change that reality. Only an NX2 and a couple more new lenses, which is not happening.

  18. I consider that website as 2 steps down from DPR when it comes to video IQ. And that ain't saying much. True, true. Hard to be Cinematic in 4k or above.too sharp. Even the old films were not really sharp other than B&W They were creamy sharp. Some of them are just breath taking. Now I guess some of the Panavision stuff was good at the time for detail, but no film stock is without grain even at 64 ISO, it is comprised of small particles of a metallic silver.

  19. Its intended for game capture from PS4 and XBOX etc but it can record anything with an HDMI output. It has the mic input so that gamers can add commentary as they are playing and it is embedded with the recorded video onto the USB stick. For vloggers this means that they could use it to capture video from their camera and get themselves the mic input that manufacturers don't want to give them. It was a slightly tongue in cheek suggestion but to be honest its viable in situations where you might want fast turnround and don't have the latitude to record external audio and post sync. And at fifty quid its cheaper than a camera upgrade !

  20. The 6K mode on the GH5 is actually less sharp (sharpened) than 4k. It looks smoother but shows more detail if that makes sense.
    1 point
  21. Can’t say I have as I do not have a 6k monitor. Also, is more resolution really the answer? I’ve seen some pretty nice HD footage that looked very cinematic. Of the many Oscar nominated movie the lion share used Arri.., and the highest resolution was 3.2k... so perhaps the more resolution, the less cinematic?

  22. Alway thought the Osmo would be an ideal vlogging camera, especially the Plus version as its wider angle and has the optical zoom. Smaller sensor but tons of features (including mic input obviously) and free orientation of the monitor. The double tap thing to rotate the camera from selfie to world view would be a boon too I would imagine, let alone the stabiliser. They're available at decent prices used as well. Anyway....... Here is some lateral thought to get round manufacturer's borderline kinky fetish of not putting mic inputs on any of these cameras. With this portable HDMI recorder you can add a mic input to ANY small camera for only £66 I'm almost certain it can be persuaded to be USB powered as well. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B074Z3K8C1/ref=psdc_949408031_t2_B00VM4J4Y6 And how can you resist a product that lists the mic input feature as "Support the microphone input voice more vivid to show" ? As Doge would say....

  23. I feel exactly the same way! Any great vlogging cameras needs this. Wish there would be 1" compacts with these simple features. I wouldn't mind that too much. But the G7/G80/G85 are kinda bulky ish, so I wish that say the future GF6 successor (which has has a flip up screen) would simply gain a mic input (and of course it would have 4K! d'oh) Been so many years and still the a5100 hasn't been updated :-( An a5300 (even if it overheats and has short battery life) with a mic input and 4K would be a sweet choice for vlogging with.

  24. I saw this move Annihilation its ok but I don't think there is much there, there. It feels like one of those endurance movies testing the boundaries of patience and comprehension... very dream like reminded me a lot of Solaris(1976) SPOILERS BELOW ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What I found of note is the director read the book but refused to go back to it afterward as he wrote the script on the "feeling" it gave him and the things general things he remembered from reading it. Some think its a cancerous bubble on earth that is deconstructing and rebuilding itself to be the perfect hidden organism like the shimmer was a giant petri dish where the thing started to copy cells then move on to simple organisms like grass and flowers and build its way up to Humans the ultimate organism?and after it mimicked us perfectly it destroyed its "Lab" or "Cocoon" the shimmer had birthed its own Adam & Eve that could do whatever they want or populate the earth undetected and unimpeded. Some say it's about the power of human will and resolve or lack thereof... All the women that went in the shimmer had basically destroyed lives and no real reason to come back one was an addict one lost her family, one was facing terminal cancer. All but the protagonist chose this suicide mission with the idea in their heads they are not coming back. So perhaps like some twisted genie the shimmer granted their wish not to exist in different ways but portman was determined to get back to her husband she had purpose and will so it granted her that wish Some say It speaks on the Idea that many times we are our own worst enemy and sometimes destroy our lives subconsciously Pertaining to natalie she was a seemingly happily married successful Phd but chose to cheat on her husband perhaps feeling she doesn't deserve her happiness... I believe she said something like I hate the person I cheated with and I hate myself as well the freudian death drive... some people that have what seems to be everything wealth status etc. and are compelled to do stupid things that make no sense harming themselves (Bill Clinton, Anthony Weiner...etc Trump?) She didn't enjoy the sex it she hated herself for it yet she still did it....and its implied the husband found out about the affair and accepted the suicide mission in melancholia for her actions. Why was her house in the shimmer? don't know.... Because he subconscious will to get back home was so strong the shimmer manifested her goal? The sheepish quiet chick perhaps her greatest subconscious wish was just not to exist anymore and she just disappeared? It seems every woman got the the fate they wanted or expected. Would like to see again when Netflix puts on USA servers (When?) And don't get me started on that whole cave thing... ??? I think this movie it is a work of art. it has something to say. Perhaps the ultimate theme is: be careful what you wish for or expect (consciously or subconsciously) because the universe may give it to you.

  26. It’s literally the 3rd comment down from the top of the page linked. It very well may be BS but Vitally may have some insider knowledge. Either way, always a pleasure. I was making a joke about the GH5s not getting IBIS due to that Amazon show needing a couple of crash cams...

  27. I do like a good TV series; anthology series especially. More like a novel whereas a movie is like a short story. I'm with you there. Mother was wonderfully bonkers and metaphorically crazy. More of that ambitious stuff for me.

  28. I agree with the above, but would add that 4K can be nice for talking head stuff for people whose channels are higher quality and more like they're the presenter of a show rather than someone recording inane verbal diarrhoea to amuse themselves while in-transit to somewhere unimportant (which - let's be honest - is most vlogs). This camera could easily do the presenter style videos because those people shoot under controlled conditions (essentially in a studio set) and so manual focus and a chair with a backrest would work well in these instances. RS doesn't matter as much if the camera is on a tripod and it's just a person talking. If they had to make compromises (it's Canon, so we'll let the ML team determine if they were necessary) then they're not so bad for vlogging I think.

  29. Well to be fair... The Grand Tour ordered 4 GH5s’... so that’s just guaranteed money in the bank... The GH5s is intriguing and I agree that sensor is pushing a little more mojo than the GH5 but dollar for dollar, if I were in the market for either/or, I’d go with the GH5 for IBIS and 6K anamorphic. However, I still think both cameras have an innate videoish look to them that reminds me of PBS local programming or low budget travel shows.

  30. I took a look at 'Bright' (which I had never heard of) mostly because of this thread. In the UK we have an expression - a marmite film - meaning that you are going to either really 'love' it or 'hate' it and I do like watching marmite films. But Bright, I stopped watching after 20 minutes. It almost certainly isnt the worst film of the year but it was pretty terrible. According to Cinemascore the worst film of 2017 was 'Mother'. It received an 'F' - the lowest score you can get and the first film to receive an 'F' since 2012. Mother is definitely a marmite film - I loved it.

  31. @webrunner5 It is a miracle, you've perfectly nailed it with your American English, but don't blame the Fuji device, buddy! People kill people, not the tools ; ) I don't think people see Fuji's as their savior in any way other than as matching their tiny agendas by their inner own. On the other hand, Fuji has no high-end to protect other than their medium p-h-o-t-o-g-r-a-p-h-y format. A feature takes ages to comply. We live in hurry times. People have no time to read, why should they have time to go beyond easy LUTs? :-D Ditto & Amen : ) Don't forget Panasonic brand is known by their innovation and prosumer approach, extending their high-end abilities to their minor offer if we can call it so :X

  33. Well that did it. Now my obsessive curiosity just kicked in. ARGH! If this is true and the record time is decent (get ready for large and fast SD cards) this renders this camera up there with the top of the line cinema cams. That image sensor has a 14bit 6.5k RAW signal.

  35. 54 pages on this freaking camera. (Or any) Why is this particular camera so controversial here? I feel bad for the people that actually bought and like this camera, I'm sure they came to this thread to enjoy talking about it with others that like it too. I wonder if Andrew can close this one and start a new one for those that actually care about it? For those that don't, simply disregard it, it's really not that hard. I have to say, it's been a long time for me where I've seen people so vehemently debate each other's opinion and preference, as if that were even debatable. It felt like I was reading an Android vs iOS or Windows vs. OSX comment section. I'm officially checking out of this one fellas. Seen you on the flip side of the moon.

  37. Great work! It reminded me the La Soufrière from Herzog. Not only because of the absence of the expected sublime event but also human nature. Wikipedia describes it nicely: "Driven by either madness or complete harmony with nature, the subjects of Herzog's films exemplify life at its most spiritually extreme. The people who remained on the island had accepted their fate, and had given their lives to God. "

  39. No, its just that's what the screens are usually used for. You just give it HDMI and some USB power and away you go. There are some very thin credit card sized USB power banks that you could just tape on to the back to both keep the size down and make into a case. As I stressed in the original post, don't expect it to be a replacement for a SmallHD 501 or whatever but I'd say that for vlogging it's more a case of confirming framing so its adequate for that. The thing about Sony is that they have the flip up on their much cheaper HD only APS-C A5100 which is pretty much the same form factor case as the A6300 so they ARE doing this to annoy you

  40. I've read that too, many times! Crazy What they don't realise is: good video = sells more cameras. More cameras sold = more cameras to spread fixed costs over. Lower fixed costs = lower priced cameras for everyone! (including "pure" photographers)

  41. Your aggression and unpleasantness is starting to seriously impact the enjoyment that others derive from this forum. You derail thread after thread with your deeply insulting scattergun imprecations. We get that you don't like what Fuji have done with their new camera and we get that you don't like Mattias. So why don't you do the adult thing and leave both this thread and his posts well alone. Edit: for the avoidance of doubt, I'll be using the ignore feature from now on. I shouldn't have to do that, in a generally respectful forum.

You're probably right, but I hate upscaling to 2k, which is what I typically target for my output resolution in case my clients want to take their work to festivals. 2K is still the main theatrical standard with 4k projectors on the rise, which is probably why Arriflex stuck with that resolution for so long. It's a tradeoff, and I would consider lower resolution in fast paced scenes as opposed to that rolling shutter. Thankfully, the Ursa Mini is on it's way and I won't have to worry about so much pronounced rolling shutter, just my back instead.

  47. Veeeery nice. I have plenty of my own words to digest now. Never realized you're such an artist in this ilk of filmmaking. 100 percent agree about feature work being a subgenre, my post should of been a bit more diplomatic. Again. Your work is great. I asked mostly because I just got over the technology bug and am trying not to relapse. I went full circle with owning so many dslrs that shooting and accomplishing goals took backseat to doing a plethora of test and voicing complaints about 8bit limitations.

  48. SOOC my ass. You can say a Canon T2i has a better color science, it might be better than the GH5s, but it doesn't mean it is worth a crap to compare to each other. Hell this is sort of suppose to be a Cine type forum not a beauty contest. Ohh my Reds are better than your Reds is what is happening with this Fuji X-H1 on here. It is a nice camera but it is like comparing a Sony FS5 to a F55. Both are good, one is great. That is what I think is the difference. It is amazing how few people on here even give the GH5s a look let alone talk about buying one. It is a miracle camera for the money. You can make a living with it. A feature movie. There is hardly anything it can't do. And there is like 20 people on here in a Cine forum that could gives a shit, and there is 1,000 that think the X-H1 is the second coming of Jesus Christ! Crazy place, just crazy LoL.
