A few grabs of a music video I shot using an FS7 and Zeiss CP.2s. This is from the first shooting day. More to follow when I get the footage back from the 2nd Day. I applied a LUT and a light grade then added a bit of film grain.

^ This in spades. ^ I've learned this quickly over the years. So many people understandably focus on the camera, but really that's only half or less of the entire picture. In my view you want a tripod, a shoulder rig, a 3-axis motorized gimbal, a glidecam, a slider, a vest, a drone, a jib/crane, a gorilla pod. You want it all basically. It is not very difficult to find justifications to purchase or rent it. To not have it available to you is like a mechanic trying to fix everything on a car with just one socket wrench. It's not happening. This is an expensive field. You're going to be paying considerable costs for this interest and profession regardless how big or small your setup is. The tools of the trade are pricey, and if they're cheap they're pricey in other ways that make you uncomfortable on location or set. Give us your set up time. ? Do you show up to the gig early or are you having the client waiting on you for setup? I always try to show up early. I personally hate having clients and talent watch me set up my rig and start asking technical questions, or look at me like, "Is this really nessecary, can't we just point the camera somewhere and hit record?" I worked recently with a very impatient Director. It was hell. Instead of mitigating the expectations of the talent on the ground, the director made setups much worse by trying to rush me through them and encouraging the talent (mostly amateurs) to start telling me what my job should intel and how long it should take. I mean, how much time does it take to whip out a smartphone and hit record, right? Lots of sighs and moans and sideway looks. It put a lot of pressure on me and ultimately the shoot suffered big time. Also, the Director didn't believe in blocking or storyboarding or anything that resembled planning. Never again. ?

On my computer Adobe and the in camera simulations ends up 100% identical with zero effort. So for me its raw or nothing. But I can definitely understand the appeal of good jpegs. It depends on what parts of the images making process one appreciate. Same thing goes for video. If one loves shooting but hates grading, then a bmpcc isn't exactly a killer camera. But if one enjoys the post process a low bitrate stills camera might feel underwhelming.

Rent one and check for yourself. A shoulder rig isn't just about holding your camera.. You have 4 points where your body is connected to the camera, 2 hands, shoulder and your eye. This allows movement and a look you don't get with anything else. You can attach a follow focus and pull focus without shaking. You won't use it all the time- it's a tool for special scenes like a Steadicam or Dolly, you only use it when needed. (Or if you do like an event all day long) If you like the feeling of your rented rig, don't buy a compromise- no gorilla pod and no rig with one handle or anything that costs less than 200 $ (new), you will get pissed of because of screws getting loose and things like that. You always can atttach weight to a rig, but i recommend doing this after all is set up and you can balance it right.

I knew I hadn't imagined this. It was an LX100 and he just soldered a mic input to the ribbon where the internal mics connected.

This is the first documentary that I have done. It was shot on Sony A7sii, Panasonic GH5, Sony Rx100m4 and a Phantom 4 pro. Would love to hear your thoughts! Editing a 30 minute piece is soooo much work. I applaud people who work in this format every day!

Sometimes work for free means they feel they are entitled to do whatever they want since everything is "free" I got a friend who owns a FS7 and did a "free" shoot for a "student" project. When it finished they never show gratitude for his time and gears (and the crafty is the usual shit for this kind of stuff) , and cut him off completely after it wrap up so he didn't even get to see what the final one looks like. I usually stay away from those projects as far as possible, I rather do something worthwhile for myself instead, like go on trip lol. No one fucking bossy me around in my own damn free time.

IF you have to stay m43, then your choices are obviously limited. That being said, GH anything is not renowned for it's stills. That doesn't mean it's bad, but it hasn't been turning a lot of heads to say the least. In my opinion there's only 3 choices when you want equally good video and stills in one camera body. Sony A "pick your poison" Samsung NX1 Fuji H-X1 (as controversial as it's been here) Interestingly enough all have 8bit output.

I have it. I use it occasionally. The problem for still shots is that it rests on your chest so you get breathing motion.

The new Fuji processing software that uses the camera to process raw files is a great way to get the 100% authentic Fuji look if Adobe or whatever you're using isn't cutting it. The caveat is its slow/clunky and the number of supported cameras is limited. Though I think Adobe has gotten a lot better since the "Fuji Rethink Raw" video above was posted back in 2016. Personally I shoot a lot of high contrast scenes outdoors, jpeg's just can't capture the DR like a raw - I hate blown clouds/sun/skies and I mostly shoot handheld so bracketing is usually not something I can do. For me even the jpegs still need tweaks. For portraits the jpegs looks great, especially with Astia as shown above. Arcos is awesome for B&W SOOC and I really like Chrome for cityscape or street stuff. The new Eterna is going to be my go-to profile for video, and it looks like it'll be good with landscape stills as well. I'm in the "hates grading" camp Mattias mentioned, so I really dig Chrome, Pro Neg and now Eterna. Chris

Wow if anyone on here has an eye toward Photojournalism this live Camera Store broadcast is the cats ass. Spoiler alert: She uses a Canon 5D mk III. She is scary good with it, she even shot the latest Olympics with it, and this video puts the reality , you Really don't Need the latest and greatest to make Photo, Video stuff happen. It is a very Looooong video though. Probably an hour or more. Well worth watching I don't care what you do. This woman is a Pro and gives some damn good tips. Watch it, all of it, it is that good. There is something in this video that everyone on here can gain knowledge about. She knows her stuff.

Each 'bubble' on the legs have a rubber ring around them and they're surprisingly grippy. Combined with the fact you can bend it however you'd like it can do an ok job. The most significant issue is that as everything is flexible and there's no way to lock things down (there is no tighten adjustment) if you put enough force on something then it will move. I don't think you'll run into this problem if you get a large enough one (this is why I went with the largest model) but you can't expect it to be completely rigid either. Great advice. Rigs are personal and depend on what you're shooting and how you are approaching it. @jonpais what a great rig - reminds me of the contraption I've built for my next family holiday... It has the XC10 and Rode VMP+ pointing forwards and the GoPro and Rode VideoMicro pointing backwards so that I can get shots of myself included in the video. Including the GoPro also means that I can do things like time lapses (eg, if we stop to eat by a nice view) without having a separate rig. I'm also taking my phone with the a phone gimbal for those wide panning shots that I can never get smooth handheld. Time will tell if this rig is genius, ridiculous, or both! @heart0less view this as a sign of what NOT to do!

Yes but make sure that the ones you look at have the HDMI input as some (as in those links) just connect directly to the pins of the Raspberry Pi. But if you want to get really fancy....... This is a 5.5 inch 1080p OLED panel complete with the interface to allow you to connect HDMI and to power it from USB. The screen is the same resolution but slightly bigger than say the SmallHD 501 and at 350 nits is not quite as bright but still at least 2x brighter than the camera LCDs. Now, obviously, you don't get the focus aids etc so its just the monitor but its a hell of a monitor for $99. Thats for a minimum order of 5 though. OK, I've just run a test. The one I have is 3000 mAH so its slightly higher capacity and it has 4 LED bars for showing its charge level. After 2 hours running the monitor, it is still showing 4 bars so I think you'll be fine with the one you've bought !

In addition to the above advice, another option I have opted to go with is a Job Gorillapod (I bought the largest one, I think it's called the 5K?). It's a small tripod with bendy legs, and is a jack-of-all-trades-but-master-of-none. If you're familiar with Casey Neistat it's what he uses on his hand-held rigs. It can be used: as a very short tripod (~30cm tall) if you bend the legs so they're together it works as a handle if you have a bullhead you can adjust it so the legs go straight out behind the camera horizontally and it's a crude shoulder rig if you have the legs coming back at you then you can have them make two points of contact with your chest, with your hands making three if you put one leg towards your chest you can shape the other two out to the sides in a W shape and they become two handles - one on each side of the camera a variation on the above is that the leg coming back goes over your shoulder making it a shoulder rig with handles it's grippy so it can be wrapped around trees, poles, etc etc etc etc It won't do any of those things as well as dedicated rigs, but it's probably the most flexible rig you can get. You said you didn't want to go overboard - this will give you some extra stability but will also ensure you aren't going too far! My other suggestion might be a monopod. Super stable if you're stationary, and if you're walking then it makes a decent counterbalance a bit like a glidecam.

You know what's nuts about Canon and the C200? It has a 10-bit codec. But you're forced to shoot at 60fps. 125 MB/s for 12bit 30p. 125 MB/s for 10bit 60p. Canon doesn't want us to have 50MB/s 10bit 30p. lol Won't be renting this camera anymore. Shoots a great imagine, wanted to buy it, but the media issue is seriously fucked. Only 1 cfast slot, and no 10-bit 30fps.

I have been using the rig in the attached photo lately. To make the rig more stable, you should position the weight as spread out as possible. Putting the powerbank on the end of the rods makes a big differenc, and it's also nice to have it powering the camera. The mid handle is in the centre of gravity which makes it better to handle. I attach the front handle when I want to shoulder mount it. All together the pieces cost about $150 from eBay

Nope - No improved RS No sound (at the moment) No 30/48/50/60 or higher fps Same miserable failure in low-light as generally known No DIS (but lens stabilization + AF working) No overheating encountered (till now) Not coming before or on April first... ...but the undefeated detail and sharpness king for 4K beauty shots in controlled light and daylight scenarios...and ridiculously maleable in post, even in the eyes of professionally working picky VFX and grading experts...

My partner is starting her own business and part of her duties is public speaking, so I'm learning a bit about editing those videos. When you're going to smaller events they only film them with one camera (if they film them at all) so if you want to edit the speech down for length or to take out awkward moments then I've found punching in to be very useful. As much as I think people look down on YT and vloggers I have learned a lot about low budget film-making from watching how the best of them handle difficult situations. Partly because their publishing schedule is too fast to allow endless re-takes of things, and partly because they often talk about filming, or walk past mirrors, etc so you get to see a bit of behind-the-scenes as well. I particularly benefit from the fact that they have little to no planning, shoot under uncontrolled conditions and then have to make the best of it in the edit room, as that's also what my run-and-gun shooting is like with family holidays etc.

Its intended for game capture from PS4 and XBOX etc but it can record anything with an HDMI output. It has the mic input so that gamers can add commentary as they are playing and it is embedded with the recorded video onto the USB stick. For vloggers this means that they could use it to capture video from their camera and get themselves the mic input that manufacturers don't want to give them. It was a slightly tongue in cheek suggestion but to be honest its viable in situations where you might want fast turnround and don't have the latitude to record external audio and post sync. And at fifty quid its cheaper than a camera upgrade !

Someone (Otto) tried to use a USB mic with the NX500 but it doesn't work, i guess... The NX500 is almost perfect. No, I have no experience of it but, like the others in that sector, it'll be suitable for its target platform which is YouTube. Which of course is the same target platform as vloggers. With regard to mic inputs, someone cut open a Panasonic (either GX80 or LX100) and did it so its possible. I'd be curious to see a tear down of say a G80 next to a GX80 to see a comparison of where the mic input is routed...

After watching the shootout and the videos, the EVA grew a few inches in my mind! The C200's benefit is internal raw (but EVA will give a few internal codecs and external raw in a week or two, that was said in the shootout) and most importantly DP touch AF (that is still a strong selling point for Canon). In everything else the EVA seems like a better bet. It even has a programmable 3 positions switch (inside joke for whoever watched the aforementioned video!)!

Alway thought the Osmo would be an ideal vlogging camera, especially the Plus version as its wider angle and has the optical zoom. Smaller sensor but tons of features (including mic input obviously) and free orientation of the monitor. The double tap thing to rotate the camera from selfie to world view would be a boon too I would imagine, let alone the stabiliser. They're available at decent prices used as well. Anyway....... Here is some lateral thought to get round manufacturer's borderline kinky fetish of not putting mic inputs on any of these cameras. If you're making an honest documentary, a director lets the events go where they go and then you build a narrative out of what happened. A good director can anticipate the shots needed and collect moments that will ultimately make sense. Still, salvage ethnography is always a challenge because so many biases of an outsider director will move the story in ways of which they're probably not even aware. Aside from that, however, the whole process is affected by the process of assertively observing, (which is what you have to do to get shots with a camera) but that doesn't mean valid compelling truths will not exist in the footage and eventual narrative. So it's been since the dawn of the genre. I mean, "Nanook of the North" is almost a complete fiction, but there's still something legitimate about it.

Terrible characaters, terrible "race-relations". A Fricking "Kick me" sign...REALLY??? A plot with an obvious payoff and a completely botched climax. Did not enjoy it at all.

Get a 34" 3440x1440 ultrawide. Perfect single screen size in my opinion, started using mine and will never go back. You don't have to deal with scaling issues and gives you tons of screen real estate.
