    NX2 rumors

Guys, a community always can have some more useful ideas than a single person. The problem is the technical implementation and the workflow after getting the results you want. One more problem could be the legal aspect... As the processor of the NX1 is very powerful, I invented a workflow called IDOB - Image Data Optimization Blocks. It can combine 2 RAW images and output a single DNG file (16 bit) with a convenient amount of data (much less than a single RAW) but with a tremendous amount of DR. And it fits in a modern workflow with Premiere or Davinci..... This ground principle is not my invention: When putting (stacking) more images together (even shot under same conditions = similar EV) you will get a single superiour image with great DR and tremendous possibilities to work in post. Just try it: Go with your camera and shoot in quite dark conditions JPEGs in burst mode (even without EV change). Stack them in post to a single image together. Do some post work on it and compare this result with a edited single picture...By far more details and DR...Have fun...

  2. With DPREVIEW: - The EOS M50 offers 4K video and Dual Pixel CMOS AF, but not at the same time. Is there a technical reason for this limitation? "With the EOS 5D Mark IV, we do offer 4K video and Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus, so technically it is feasible. But given the position of the M50 in the lineup, we can’t include all of the features available in a product like the 5D IV. Given the position of the product, we wanted to achieve the optimal balance [of features] in a camera in that range." We all knew Canon was crippling its products. Now is another proof. How can they dare sell you completely crippled shits for so much money? And people buy that. What a ridiculous company. I am speechless.

  3. Went out and shot some more footage today with the X-H1 around 4pm, hoping to see what kind of dynamic range testing I could do. It was overcast, but the sun was still pretty bright in the sky. All of these shots were using the Eterna film simulation, and almost all at either 60p or 120p, slowed down to 24p in post. I graded this in Resolve and just added contrast and saturation, with slight white balance adjustments as I saw necessary. It wasn't this vibrant in real life (it was a gray day), but I wanted to see what it looked like when I pushed saturation. YouTube definitely makes this footage look mushier than it did when I was editing it.

  4. Pretty crazy. When I was young we busted our ass to try and get rid of Grain, and now every wants to add it!

    NX2 rumors

Hi guys, After taking a look at you posts, it's exciting to see how every of you would do it. Some of your thoughts were mine at the beginning of this long way I've done. To tell you a bit more about it: The biggest advantage of my method is the great maleability in post. It's absolutely the same as working with other professional RAW formats. @All - to say a little bit more...The speculations on data rate transfer limitations are not useful - because I've "opened the box"...Now I have partial direct access to the heart of this beast... But please consider, "heart surgery" is not as simple as it sounds - specially for a small guy like me...And it could possibly imply legal issues... @Juxx989 Cynism and giving up when disappointed don't make films or fotographs. Please consider, that BM manufactures professional productions cameras with multiple codec options. XLR, NDs, etc. Not comparable with a modified hybrid camera - even when it's a great one. There's a great difference between playing around and reliability & professional features (not IQ only) of a dedicated professional camera.

  7. It sounds like he is talking about size and price. The balance is, "sure we can put in anything you want but its gonna cost you and make it bigger. And that's not what this camera is about."

  8. C’mon now Jon, Panasonic doesn’t even give the all-i 1080p to any of their sub $1000 cameras. All companies have product tiers with more features in the higher tiered products. The 5D4 is nearly two years old with the older processor. And to many, mjpeg is a solid codec that editing programs can cut like butter. Some of my favorite Panasonic videos were shot in mjpeg with the GH1/GH2 hacks. I don’t really care what cameras people use. In fact, I love the competition these companies have. It only helps us. But this notion that Canon isn’t innovating or they’re holding back is ridiculous. They’re the first company to have fully manual video mode, first 4K DSLR, first 4K 60p DSLR, first company with usable video AF, first company to put a Log Profile in a DSLR... etc...

  9. That's the funniest thing I've read all day! I never get the endless Canon bashing here, as if they're the only one that segments its lineup. Olympus doesn't put the focus stacking and pixel shift in all its bodies - or PDAF for that matter on anything below the EM1. Panasonic doesn't put 10-bit in anything other than the GH5(s) or a competent AF system in anything. Sony doesn't put anything beyond 8-bit 4:2:0 with the same 100mbps bitrate we've seen for years in anything below the FS5 and so on - yet people here are shitting themselves with excitement over the a7III and its non-existent weather sealing, partial plastic body, cheap spec LCD/EVF and so on because of oversampled 4k and what looks like a great AF system for a mere $2000. Fuji, geez, just check the XH1 thread. Where are the threads bitching about the G9 being crippled for not getting 10-bit? Or the a7r3 with its cheap ass single UHS-II card slot and no 10-bit or even a higher bitrate at $3200? The a9 is even more offensive at $4500. Everyone segments its cameras. Its a shitty reality we're forced to deal with. As to Canon, they're clearly waiting to release the mirrorless 5d4 without cannibalizing 5d4 sales. Chris

  13. Not bad. The 1080 does upscale to 4k nicely. Here is a 3k to 4k upscale i did awhile back. I still haven't found a camera that can match the color, detail, motion cadence of the 5DMK3 in raw unless I want to spend a fortune. Canon could really truly rule everyone if they wanted. It's such a tragedy. :-(

  14. So, this is filed under the NX2 rumors thread...but, if true, I thought this warrants its own thread... 20 hours ago, Arikhan said: Im have good news for you: I just shot RAW video with the NX1...RAW VIDEO in 25p - nice workflow with 25 DNGs per second. Just an unbelievable quality (in my eyes). Problem: I'm just writing my graduation exam...after that I'll download the footage and describe the methodology. It's quite special but it's great for my Ipurposes. With the 60mm 2.8 at F6 an unbelievable detail and sharpness. It's quite exciting...

I am not trying to provoke debate. I am just saying that given all the information we have todate the logical thing is Arikhan is just yanking you for a ride. Also, personally I would much rather be wrong then be played.

Wasn't ML released on April 1st? I've been in contact with Arikhan. If this is a joke he's been rather convincing both publically and privately. If it turns out to be a bluff, it is what it is, we got played, that's the tradition of April Fool's. I think whatever the situation, you can't denie this has many of us intrigued, including yourself. A great many of us have felt through out the years of onwership and use that the NX1 had more technical potential then Samsung enabled. I think our very own Andrew Reid would agree. This possible revelation plays right into the hands of these speculations, and if true, its not only good for existing and potential NX1 owners, but the broader mirrorless market altogether. This would perk up the likes Panasonic, Sony and Fuji for sure. It would be a serious call to action.

    HLG to VLog Conversion

Hello Sage! I'm very interested in your idea! Yesterday arrived my new gh5 and I discovered all the dynamic range of HLG! WOW! Highlights are there! But I'm stuck with editing workflow since premiere pro doesn't support rec2020... I found this topic so the idea is to use your hlg-to-vlog lut in premiere/lumetri color/Basic Correction/Input lut and in premiere/lumetri color/Creative/Look aplying vlog-to-REC709 lut. Am I right by doing this? Thank you for sharing your work!

  19. How is this any different from what every other camera company does? All this hand wringing over an entry level model not having the specs of a higher end body. Its laughable how others get a pass and Canon gets ripped for actually saying what everyone is doing. I don't have a stake in this at all as I don't own anything Canon anymore. Why is this so shocking or offensive? Everyone does it. Sony still can't be bothered to put a simple intervalometer on its cameras and prior ones required us to pay for the app. A $500 Olympus from 2013 has one. I'm sure weather sealing will be equally bad as previous models and I believe part of the chassis is plastic. But I'll wait for a camera in hand to test before passing final judgement. The sensor and its AF is impressive, but Sony hasn't added anything outside HLG to its video spec in years. And its still a $2000 body, not a $700 entry level model like the Canon, apples and oranges. chris You don't get 45% market share from brand loyalty, there are plenty of new users buying Canon cameras. The interview clearly spelled out how Canon is marketing the lower end cameras, usability, AF and image quality. Seems to be resonating with buyers if Amazon's sales ranking are to be believed, since the top is littered with entry Canon's.

  20. You'd have to be a whole lot richer to buy it in the UK. Just added all those items up at a big UK camera store and its $8800 if you buy those parts here so your $5499 is the sale of the century !

  21. I think it is really a subjective/preference topic because I love the look of 16mm. I can understand not loving it if you prefer a clean look. I personally am partial to a clean image and like something a bit more imperfect and organic. There is just something about grain that looks so good to me and makes an image come alive. But hey, to each their own!
    1 point
  22. Looks a bit like old 16mm footage with all that grain. Like it! Color separation indeed is great using V-log. With HLG it's kinda lacking...

@Pavel Mašek It seems to be a misconception out there...You can't increase DR endlessly - this would be a perpetuum mobile and so...impossible. At the end of the day, output DR is limited by the maximum DR-capabilities of the sensor. By stacking together you can only get more and more near to the DR limits given by the sensor - and get more maleability in post by gathering useful information to work with in highlights, mids and shadows. So, that's a kind of optimizing and NOT increasing. Only sensor manufacturers can increase the DR capabilties of a sensor...

  25. The main reason I see using them is to make damn fast lenses even faster. You take the Sigma 1.8 lenses and put them on a Speedbooster, you are a happy camper. And a ASPC camera as a whole are cheaper to buy, and the native lenses for them are a lot cheaper than their FF counterparts. Plus the overall package probably weighs less on average also. Win, Win.

  26. And indeed a lot of filmmakers spend a ton of cash buying the Canon's C line - which makes us to come back to the first two posts. People still buy Canons a lot - why they will change? They will only change when the revenue starts to drop - could be the case, since last Canon's interviews mention mirrorless cameras a lot. I see two possible outcomes: - They are smart and have mirrorless prototypes under works for a lot of time. In this meantime, the market had matured, the desired features are more or less known, and they can release cameras for each segment (segmentation will never go away) much more focused. - They still afraid of canibalizing DSLR's and Cinema C line and really are behind.

  27. I dont really get the 'smart marketing' from Canon. It more strikes me as a company that is dependent on 'brand loyalty' for sales not realizing that brand loyalty is a two way street. From a marketing perspective Canon just seems to be a company with a 'lot of potential' that 'simply isnt making an effort'. That maybe not true but it is the impression Canon gives. At the opposite end of the scale, Sony's marketing 'perspective' seems to be around 'trying ' to give as much 'value' for as 'low a price' as possible.

  28. Whatever fantastical AI driven gazillion megapixel light field camera recording onto a grain of rice that manufacturers come up, you can bet your life they still won't put a microphone input on the entry level ones.

  30. Market fragmentation is a very well documented concept, it applies to everything humam created, from shaving razors to spaceships. Obviously there are small compact cars with basic safety tech that cost 10.000$€£ and Volvo's (admittedly the safest cars, they even have a pedestrian air bag!) that start from 30.000$€£. Most of the modern safety features (except the aforementioned airbag) are just software implemented or having 1-2 sensors. Total real cost could be 10$ per car, but as an extra, each one costs from hundrends to the thousands. I do not see anything weird here, only that Japanese can be very honest on their interviews, unlike western executives that always say what you want to hear, or what they want you to hear!

    NX1 RAW VIDEO???

If @Arikhan is completely serious, I want in on the hacking as well. I'm an EE student as well and have been writing embedded firmware for stuff like SSD's, so this linux-based camera is so freaking cool to me. I've been on this forum on and off for like 2 years now. Recently I started looking again for an NX1 with S Lens on Craigslist and Ebay and I can't find any good deals. Been deciding between GH5, Ursa Mini, and NX1 for semi-pro use, but would love to get an NX1 so that I could try writing some hacks. Been slowly trawling through @Otto K's github repo and a good amount makes sense but the some of the setup instructions don't (I think they will once I have a camera and start digging through the menus). Anyone see any good deals?

  33. What is this RAW internal recording on the NX1? What is it exactly and who is working on it?

  34. You could always do the old mini dv trick of stacking the same shot on two different video tracks. A B&W video track of the same clip with a lower opacity can beef up the image a touch.

My guess is it's doing 8/10 bits. But even with 8bit RAW, the image should be much more malleable in post and recover shadows and highlights better, you control the amount of denoising and don't have to worry about nailing perfect WB or using log. All this is very welcome over H.265 imo.

  41. Seems interesting. I wish Kinefinity would come out with a pocket camera. If it were cheap enough, I’d definitely give it a try... and maybe a direct competitor for BM would give them a kick in the ass to develop a pocket 2 or lowering the price of the original.
