  1. I just bought the X-H1 in Barcelona whilst I'm taking a break, and I am more impressed with it so far than I thought I would be. I'd say it is a genuine alternative to the GH5 and A7 III, given the similar prices of all 3. It does things the Panasonic and Sony don't do as well, or differently enough to make you have a strong personal preference for one or the other. First of all, the small things... You can assign 1/48 shutter for 180 deg to "T" on the shutter mode dial. Instantly go from auto to 1/48 in the blink of an eye. Very useful. The e-ink top-display is very useful and something the GH5 and Sonys lack! One of the bigger things is the quality of the stabilisation. It's insane. I actually think it might even be better than Oly/Pana. Steady handheld shots are almost completely locked-down as if on a tripod. Even walking glides are perfectly doable. Slider-style moves with your arm come out well. This is one area where it is FAR superior to the Sony cameras, and it has a larger sensor than GH5 yet possibly even better 5 axis.... THAT is unique. F-LOG and Eterna seem superb... I am not missing 10bit. Skintones, codec, all very good especially at 200Mbit which is insanely high for an IPB codec. Would be nice to have an ALL-I option but I have a feeling Fuji will do a BIG firmware update in future. The EVF I think is superior to the Panasonic and Sony side. I dare say the AF is better than the GH5 too, though not as good as A7 III / A7R III. The tiny Fuji primes are wonderful, esp. 23mm F2 WR and the 35mm F1.4. It is very responsive... recording start / stop doesn't have any lag or weirdness. I still dislike that movie-mode is on the drive mode lever, it should be a single button press to toggle between movie and stills mode. Firmware? Stills side is stronger than GH5. The mechanical shutter is the best I have ever had in anything. So quiet and dampened. Mega satisfying! Of course, larger sensor than GH5 and better JPEG colours (Fuji film simulations). I wish the further X-T2 style crop in 4K was not a thing... but it's no biggie, and there's Speed Booster for X-Mount. I wish the quality of the 1080/120fps was a little better... but it's a very nice creative tool. Plus you can access it instantly through a func. button. On paper, A7 III and GH5 are better. In reality.... it's game on.

    NX2 rumors

Why? The NX gear you already own (I saw 2 of the NX1 in the other thread), doesn't limit you at all - unless you are a coal mine, tunnel or night-life documentarist, shooting permanently in horrible lighting conditions (without the possibility to light up your scenes / models), where the NX1 doesn't shine. Or a Hollywood DOP or blockbuster filmer - but in this case there are some production cameras, beeing probably a better option than a NX1. Getting out by day some hours and taking some beautiful shots with your NX1, could probably satisfy you more than the belief you were limited by gear. I'm not a physician and don't aim to give any medical advice, but after some hours of challenging shooting, you could sleep better at night. I would just try to get more shooting fun than better/more gear or specs. Have fun. BTW: @Matthew Hartman will get his hands first on some samples. After discussing, criticism, proposals, I will put the footage down here, so you guys could take a "first look" and evaluate it from your POV. Technical or even workflow aspects are not as important as aesthetical/IQ considerations for the first...

    NX2 rumors

I think I'm one of the 'oldest' nx supporters on this forum. I bought nx100 back in late 2011 and since then I bought nx200, 300 and finally nx1 in feb 2015. So it's just been 3 years that I've been using nx1. I love it and along with s lenses it's really powerful. The news about dng recording is simply great. I followed the hacking scene from day 0 and this would be a tremendous achievement for a system which is proving to be the longest lasting reigning apsc on the market as far as I'm concerned. Kudos to you if you can make this public.

  4. I would 100% agree with this statement. I haven’t used the GH5, but I have lots of experience with Sony, including full frame and APS-C bodies. Eterna alone is a massive factor in my opinion.

  5. I don't mind Canon really but, playing devil's advocate, there must come a point where the controlled trickle down has to speed up a bit to stop even the loyalist of customers thinking its all gone a bit stale and seeking pastures new ?

    NX2 rumors

Some shade isn't completely unwarranted. As powerful as HEVC is over h.264, it's still a lossy distribution codec at the end of the day, in 8bit no less. If more can be drawn out of the camera, that's a win in my book. Of course, it will depend on the workflow and reliability. I'm sure some here are willing to meet those requirements.

    NX2 rumors

I would say 4k raw would definitely double the horsepower of the nx1 for my purposes, as long as the workflow isn't entirely unreasonable. The difference in quality can be experienced by shooting a timelapse with raw photos and comparing that to a hyperlapse shot in h265. The color depth and malleability just doesn't compare. I'm not throwing shade at the nx1's video quality (i still use it regularly after all), I'm just saying usable 4k raw video would put the camera in another league altogether.

  12. Yes the Pixapro 200D is a bit more powerful but still I would like it to be even more powerful. Even though someone said to me that it really competes against the Aputure 300D which I was suprised. I was thinking that Aputure would win easily hands down. But what I can say about the Pixapro leds is that these lights can REALLY stand some rough conditions. I recently shot a music video in cold finnish winter weather. We were shooting outside on a frozen lake. Middle of the night, -20 degree celcius. I used all my Pixapro leds (4x 100D MK II + 1x 200D). All of them survived from that! I asked from the manufacturer before the shootings what they say about using them outside in really cold weather. They just replied to me: ”we really don’t know...” Here is the video, just released:

Ok, so here we go : My only battery had 66% left, so I could only record 1 hour and 50mn. The temp in my room was 21/22 °C Results : NO OVERHEATING AT ALL Neither warning sign. Of course, results under the sun might be different, but I'm quite satisfied. I'll do a longer test with a powerbank later.

  16. I say mostly wait. Sell your D700 and get a used D750 as a stop gap. Gives you a second better video body and a better photo body. Wait on everything else. Get the Sony if you want to drop Nikon. I did it, but it was a relatively rough transition, and a lot of your Nikon lenses wont AF properly on the Sony for your photo work. If Nikon makes a good mirrorless stick with them, if not switch to another brand.

  17. And RED is no longer alone in the "greater than 4K" market, as Panasonic, Kinefinity, & others have offerings in this niche as well.

  18. The reason is Canon NEVER intentionally sparked DSLR filmmaking, they stumbled onto having the crown of the #1 choice for DSLR filmmaking entirely by chance it sometimes seem. Remember how the Canon 50D was a whisker away from having video in it. But was only thanks to Nikon introducing video in the Nikon D90 that Canon felt that they had to respond with their own HDSLR camera. (because Canon and Nikon watch each other like a hawk) That crop is waaaaaaaaaay worse! As the 5Dmk4 has no way to easily handle this crop, as the EF mount means no access to native mount lenses designed with that crop in mind, and also no focal reducers can be used. Canons (unlike Panasonic) have historically been known to overheat.

  19. This is just getting silly now. Canon is a company that is in business to make money. To make money, a business needs to offer a product or service that people want or need. If the entry level market needed these “features,” that Canon apparently diabolically leaves out of their lower tiered camera models, and Canon was losing sales opportunities based upon these needed features, then why wouldn’t they include said features? Furthermore, I am one hundred percent sure Canon understands the entry level, interchangeable lens, camera market better than some videographers on a forum does. It’s been repeated time and time again on this forum that the market share isn’t large enough for all of these companies, so eventually other companies will go the way of Samsung and I can guarantee it won’t be Canon. With that being said, I do wish Canon would be more aggressive with their lower tiered products because I love using Canon cameras. But when it comes time for me to upgrade, and if Canon doesn’t offer a product I need or want, then I will look elsewhere but I won’t waste my time assigning conspiracy theory motives to their marketing and product choices.

  20. Even without RAW output, you still have a great system on your hands. You can get some great coverage with 3 cams that will all match up perfectly. Well, that would be the cleverest strategy I've seen to date. I'm going to suspend disbelief on this one though. The guy is highlighting some very technical approaches in PM that have me seriously thinking this is legit. Either way, the kid seems pretty brilliant.

  22. In addition to @BTM_Pix's suggestion, you could use an EOSM AC adaptor and connect the dummy EOSM battery to a Sony NP battery plate. Then you could just use readily available and inexpensive Sony NP batteries (which come in various sizes/capacities), with the added option to use wall power with your EOSM.

  25. Actually, if you upload in 4k, you get into a higher 1080p bitrate tier as well. I can confirm this to be the case with a number of my videos.
    1 point
  26. That's an interesting question. The original file definitely looks better than the 1080 version on youtube, and I have heard that if you upload a video in 4k, YouTube will show a much higher bitrate version, but I think that's only if you watch the 4k resolution on YT. I did a 4k export and uploaded it - you can see it here:

  27. You are Not going to get 13 stops on a BMPCC without using Raw! Silly stuff. You will get 10 to 11 without Raw. And every camera made in the last 5 years can do that. And even in Raw if you don't have your exposure perfect, WB set to 40 IRE, nothing much over 100 IRE, you Aren't getting 13 stops either.

  31. Dude, get a grip, don't flame this forum like you do on DPR. Why to push to 25600 when even the 6400ISO in NX1 is really bad, and you do not even own a NX1, why you care? Also, if you'd like to see more hacks, you can start reading, or pay someone to do as you ask.
    1 point
  32. All else is rarely equal. DOF, Lowlight capability, DR, Resolution, the super vague term "image quality", none of it is dependent on sensor size. There are 1" sensors that kick FF sensors ass at DR, ISO Noise and Resolution. DOF is decided by the lens.

  33. Aha..cheers for the info. I meant physical control to keep them distinct from a user perspective and separate the change from one mode to the other. As I understood it though, the X-Pro2 is only a subset video wise of the X-T2 and doesn't quite require the same overhead? Does it only allow 720p recording when using the app too ?
    1 point
  34. Doubt it since the Pro2 doesn't need to switch drive. the X100f does but not with a physical button. But mostly because the camera most likely doesn't have any true mechanical switches. All cameras I know these days needs the battery pulled when they freeze for one reason or another. If the power switch actually was a powers switch that wouldn't be the case.

  35. The NX1 announcement won't in anyway compete with a full on cine camera. I do not know what wizardry Arikhan will brought in, but it won't be the same as having a dedicated cine camera able to record in multiple formats, ND filters, or the bell and whistles of a proper cine-ergonomics, and all. Kinefity's sound great, but we don't see enough, here in Europe. UMP and EVA would be safest bets for sure, and especially the EVA has a great price tag and 5.7K raw on a week, or two.

  38. And that is why it could be a good thing to point out the flaws in Canon and drive away potential buyers from Canon. As likely Canon will only come screaming kicking to the table to offer us more, if their bottom line gets hurt. That is what is need for them to jolt awake and pay attention. Indeed, and that is what allows a greater variety of companies to thrive rather than just one monopoly.
    1 point
  39. Because Panasonic/Sony/BMD/Kinefinity/etc on a per $ basis do far less "crippling" than Canon does. So yes they segment it a bit, but at least even at the lower / mid range of their selections, you're getting far better value for you $ than the equivalent priced one from Canon. Canon is a target of bashing exactly because of this contradiction of them being the #1 camera company and being poor value for money due to holding back more than others do. (am sure if Canon was say #6 ranked player in the market, then no one would give a flying hoot, and we wouldn't see the "bashing" like we do now in forums) Exactly. I've sometimes felt that Panasonic's camera division is a bit like the mainstream version of BMD.

  41. Yeah but 10 to 12 stops is pretty damn good to be honest. A lot of older cameras are at 8 stops, 8.5 stops. You have to figure pretty much the finial output to Rec. 709 is going to Only be 7 stops! If you go down to the bottom of the page it shows the DR of a lot of cameras. And Anything we can afford to buy is lucky to be 12 DR tops. https://wolfcrow.com/blog/where-cameras-stand-in-dynamic-range-film-vs-digital/

  44. What was the point of shooting at 60fps if you weren't going to conform it into slow mo? There is no other point in using that frame rate as 30fps is plenty suitable. @dbp Samsung doesn't sell mojo. They sell technology. The mojo is up to the person behind the camera. It's a cellphone with a suitable point n shoot camera slapped on the back of it. The smartphone has very little to do with the premise of a phone in the traditional sense. What they truly are is tiny computers with phone capabilities.

  47. My partner is starting her own business and part of her duties is public speaking, so I'm learning a bit about editing those videos. When you're going to smaller events they only film them with one camera (if they film them at all) so if you want to edit the speech down for length or to take out awkward moments then I've found punching in to be very useful. As much as I think people look down on YT and vloggers I have learned a lot about low budget film-making from watching how the best of them handle difficult situations. Partly because their publishing schedule is too fast to allow endless re-takes of things, and partly because they often talk about filming, or walk past mirrors, etc so you get to see a bit of behind-the-scenes as well. I particularly benefit from the fact that they have little to no planning, shoot under uncontrolled conditions and then have to make the best of it in the edit room, as that's also what my run-and-gun shooting is like with family holidays etc.
