  1. Here is a VFX heavy short film I shot on the Samsung NX1 years ago, finally decided to finish it and get it online so here it is! The last scene is the canon T3i all lenses used are the rokinon 24mm f1.4 and Canon 50mm f1.4 Watching in 4k is strongly recommended as YouTube loves compressing things

    NX1 RAW VIDEO???

For me at this point, it just doesn't stack up. I think it's right not to put pressure on the guy though. No ill feelings towards Arikhan. However we all have had our hopes raised for a while now... and so at this point it's a bit rude not to give some kind of findings that justifies the hype! Even if it is just stating the bit depth and bit rate of the 4K raw recordings, so we can see that they get written to SD card and what speed of card we need. It really is not asking for much. I for one need to decide whether to get behind it with the support of the blog, or whether to ignore it. Also from an admin's point of view... He's got himself into quite a bit of a position of trust, which as we have seen before on forums, can be dangerous when our trust gets abused. So only right to ask some polite questions... And with respect for potentially a great talent, probe a bit deeper and figure things out.

    NX1 RAW VIDEO???

I really don't understand the aspect of anyone referring to this as some sort of scam. If he starts asking you to send money via Western Union then fair enough but until that happens, what is the issue? Irrespective of that, I completely understand why @Arikhan is taking his time with this anyway. Last year, I made a small discovery while looking to build a hardware controller for Panasonic cameras and let everyone know how to do that aspect of it with a simple webpage. Within days, the "Hey guys whats up..." vloggers were on YouTube showing everyone 'their' hack for Panasonic cameras. Was I bothered about not being credited? Only by the brazen cheek of it to be honest but the bigger problem was the amount of disinformation it produced which I then had to spend a lot of time on here dealing with, which completely distracted the effort for what I was trying to do in the first place. And what of that controller? Well, it had to be back burnered when I had some real projects to do but what has really stalled it is trying to make it into something people can just get parts for off the shelf and have it work without any effort or confusion. Functionally, it has been working for months and I could give you all a parts list and some code now and you could have it but it wouldn't be slick enough and bomb proof for me to be comfortable with everyone sourcing the parts and building it themselves.I'm now on my third different hardware platform to make it viable in a turnkey way because I know for a fact that even from just handing out the simple Cinelike D webpage hack that you are making a rod for your own back when it goes into the wild if you don't. So, the bottom line is that whilst its perfectly fine for me (and probably quite a few people on here) to go and buy a single board computer, flash some code on it, wire some switches to it, put it in a matchbox with a couple of AA batteries and have it controlling my camera, it is not going to be cool when I then try and offer that up for everyone to do themselves. It really is not worth the grief you open yourself up for, particularly when as with both my project and @Arikhan 's are not intended for financial gain. Even when its for free, the entitlement game is strong with many people. Now, what he is doing is many orders of magnitude more complex than my silly little controller, so he has to make sure the technique is 100% bullet proof before he reveals it because while he might be perfectly fine in doing what needs to be done (both in terms of a mod and any consequential workflow) it will be another kettle of fish entirely when the "Hey guys, whats up..." vloggers get hold of it and pass it on (and pass it off as their own) to the general public. They'll get the fame if it works and @Arikhan will get the blame if it doesn't. Getting something to work is one thing but getting it to work for everyone else without a lot of hand holding is something entirely different and takes time. Again, I think people would be well advised to re-read his original comments about this, which he has re-iterated in subsequent ones, about it being perfect for his application and manage their expectations.

  4. Likewise. It's also getting ridiculous, especially if you don't even own the camera anymore or ever. I'm actually getting disheartened by the whole ordeal. If its real, it's real, if not oh well. I refuse to troll anyone let a lone a kid over it. I'm going to advise him to stop posting replies until go time, it's obviously not doing him any favors. Andrew says a few words and you all go into a frenzy. Really? Arikhan doesn't even have to prove anything, he could keep it all for himself, but his motivation is he wants to give back to this community in particular. As the author of the Samsung petition I know a little something about this. There was never any gaurantee it would work, but at least I gave it a shot. My hope is he will look past the antics of some here and follow through regardless. @lucabutera Its in your best interest more than anyone else here to show support for this kid, as you have some adapters to sell? If this mod is legit it's you that will benefit the most. Your attitude here is confusing to me.

  5. @Andrew Reid Max is right, it's a well-known fact in the Fuji community that Fuji cameras overrate their ISO values, causing both stills (RAW and JPG) and videos to be darker (around 2/3 stop).

  6. Bringing the topic up and summarizing my experiences after renting a shoulder rig for a while. My setup looked like this: (Reds were matched by a pure accident, though it looks really nice) The rig helped me to get rid of all micro shakes and a lot of rolling shutter, as well. Definitely smoothes pans / tilts, etc. I'd need some practice to keep my framing while walking, but it manages to make 'bumps' less apparent. All in all: I'm content with the results and think this thing matches my style of shooting. Can provide some footage to all interested. Thank you all for participating in this thread and sharing your experiences, observations and opinions. Really appreciate it!

  7. The boy has already answered many questions, especially now with his silence he gave a clear answer: He has no proof to show you. I defended her initially but then at the second image I understood the joke! Who would shoot a video vertically? The image has a 4/3 ratio and is downscaled to a 6480 x 4320 = 1800 x 1200 image. This is not possible in UHD video frames but only in a 4/3 image. Moreover, the two images are very different, the second image is clearly a 16bit color sampling while the first presents the characteristic defects of the 4.2.0 and codec h265 that can not be justified by the detail captured by the lens.

  10. I am shocked by the sometimes malicious comments of some (also dedicated and long known) members of this forum. Actually, this forum is characterized by a tolerant and friendly manners. That is also a reason for me to have a look here for years and sometimes to write. Unfortunately, you do not notice here every post that the author should be older or more experienced than Arikhan. Especially as an NX1 owner, it should be possible to show patience and not to jump at any provocation (I mean initial hate posts) just because a young person was not experienced enough to wait a little while to publish his discovery. Give Arikahn the opportunity to prove himself. And please keep your good manners.

    NX1 RAW VIDEO???

The vertical image is a picture. - 4K video frame size 4000 x 2160 = Downscaling 1800 x 972. - UHD video frame size 3840 x 2160 = Downscaling 1800 x 1012. - Downscaling Picture size 6480 x 4320 = Downscaling 1800 x 1200. The vertical image he has published is exactly 1800 x 1200! You can not get a 1800 x 1200 pixel from a 4k or UHD video frame! He has always claimed to have 25fps raw limit from 4k or UHD video. In addition to this evidence add that the two photos are different in shape and substance, add that the first frame is clearly a h265, add that he is a kid, add that he is waiting for the first of April, add that he has no reason not to publish a test file, add that he is reading these posts and remains silent. @Kisahahe can make fun you but not me.

  17. Not sure how they "fudged" the ISO? Care to elaborate? One thing I do like is the exposure meter is accurate in both standard picture profile modes AND LOG mode, unlike on a Sony where you have to guesstimate 1.5 to 2 stops to the right for S-LOG. F-LOG comes out perfectly exposed in aperture priority mode with exposure comp. bang in the middle at 0... Same with Eterna and Velvia, etc. As for low light, actually X-trans sensors have been known consistently for their leading low light performance in their class. It is on par with best Sony APS-C camera in low light (A6500). Compared to my Leica SL the X-H1 looks a full 2 stops cleaner at ISO 1600 in the shadows when both are set to record LOG, 4K, Super 35. I expect the Sony A7 III to be very good indeed, but not by 2 stops. This is easily a ISO 12,800 camera in 4K and F-LOG... Which you cannot quite say about GH5... And with GH5S you lose the stabilisation.

  18. First post in here! @GreekBeast do you live in Greece too? Because this could play a role in buying options. Your choices depend on a number of things: do you absolutely need AF? Will you often use a gimbal? 1) If you want AF on all lenses, the (Canon) Metabones + Sigma 18-35 is a great choice. There is also the much more economical Viltrox adapter (also for Canon) which has received rave reviews but is backordered almost everywhere. I guess you can expect more than two months to receive it in Greece (due to customs clearance times...) 2) If you go the Nikon way (as I've done) there is the Viltrox NF-43x adapter, which features the same focal reducer as the (AF) Canon version, but is much cheaper, easier to get and of course manual focus only. If you already have a number of Nikon lenses, it surely makes sense to go this way. Again, no AF. 3) I have the Sigma 30mm f1.4. It's a quite nice lens, sharp and with reasonably fast AF. You can usually get this for close to 200€ used in Greece and about 330€ brand new. Haven't tried the 16mm but I'd think the Panaleica 15mm f1.7 would make a better choice; smaller, lighter, probably faster AF. Great for gimbal or handheld work. In conclusion, IMHO, the most cost effective solution would be to go for the Viltrox for Nikon focal reducer, plus Sigma 18-35mm, plus 2-3 native lenses that cover your most used focal ranges (the Panasonic 42.5mm f1.7 would make another good/cheap option). Because of your low light requirements, native zooms would present some issues. Then add a couple of your adapted Nikon glass and you'll be well served.

  21. I like the idea of only allowing films in it if they've been rejected somewhere! Of course this is a bit of a gimmick, as ANY film can get itself rejected somewhere. But it is funny, and sometimes you need a bit of a "gimmick" to get some marketing traction. As we were discussing in another thread on EOSHD, some high(ish) power projectors are becoming fairly affordable! Plus a couple of outdoor speakers in a park, and you're away laughing.

  23. The novelty of getting farmer to let you do it in his cornfield or next to his cornfield would be pretty great. Gonzo the thing and make the craptacular-ness of it all part of the fun. Accept film only under 5 minutes so you can watch a bunch of 'em in 4 hours. Suggest charging 5 bucks a submission if only to offset the costs of throwing a halfway decent party with snacks and beers for one night. I'd imagine you might get around 200 or so submissions on FilmFreeway. Maybe at that low price a few more. Maybe give a 50% discount to regional filmmakers. The film festival I'm part of runs a 25% discount during the 1st week of "early bird" submissions. Basically, it's a $15 submission fee 'til Monday. Pretty cheap. If any of you want to submit, it's a great festival simply because the location is awesome. Here's the festival: https://filmfreeway.com/BorregoSpringsFilmFestival And here's the code: "25WORMS" Any festival, especially a small one, takes a bunch of work though to make it special for the filmmakers. If you're wanting to make it nice for those accepted in the fest and those attending, pretty much assume you'll be working a full time gig for a few months before the event. Just wait 'til you're on the other side of the curtain and you'll get wise to why festival do things a certain way. Don't feel like you can't break the mold though!

  25. Color looks to me a Lot different on the GH5s, and in a good way better. It is leaning toward the Orange, Red look that has been popular forever with Canon. More EVA1 looking than the GH4 look on the GH5. But the colors are better on the GH5 than on the GH4. That would not have been too hard to do. They were the definition of the Panny digital look, same with the G7. People from Mars Green to boot. They are really different beasts colors wise.

  27. Just thoughts from me... but I could be recognized for call because I provided somewhere earlier in forum my own test about similar achievable results between GH5s internal vs using Resolve's or Neat Video external NR intervention above iso 3200. But everything above iso 3200 means, imo, anyways stepping into realm of subjectivity and matter of task: how much of losing image details - leaving aside how good or bad is camera's resistance against color shifting - somebody consider tolerable. My conclusion is: GH5s has truly one stop higher margin of fully safe (details and color wise) lowlight capability for any professionally usage than GH5 - and that's impressive and really great, or, more precisely, that's a dream come true for all long time m43 users. Also, if someone is constantly in circumstances of shooting in dark conditions - GH5s also greatly save you time because of respectable but pretty aggressive internal NR. Advance in color science, although obviously exists OOC is, as I see, quite incremental or marginal, and its visibility greatly depends of usage mastering and lenses - even mr Altiser in his lovely enthusiastic youtube presentation admit that he is little bit "picky" regarding color progress compare to GH5... I'd say that any sort of ode to somehow revolutionary GH5s color magic is little bit exaggerating and owe to hype for new nice instrument - I'm personally more fascinate with results providing by such connoisseurs аs @Sage or Juan Melara showing how close in results could be GH5x or other top-prosumers cameras to these of highend professional instruments. Does all of that make enough reasons to prefer GH5s instead GH5 if you have to choose just one of them? For my needs - unfortunately not (although at the very moment I have great opportunity to exchange GH5 to GH5s + roughly 350e)... but, of course, for someone's else needs conclusion easy and fully justified could be contrary. ... I'm just regretting not to have opportunity to test GH5s with Atomos recorders - bypassing internal NR algorithm.

  29. Seems like a cool idea. I'd focus on staying small at first, and maybe even having it be informal. There are lots of generic local festivals, but few that are that interesting. Something small, a starting place to find collaborators, could be cool. If you're going to accept everyone, maybe put a tight limit on how long each short can be. I agree with that. I've heard similar things about Channel 101 being a more insular and self-serving community than it once was. It's sort of turned into what it was a reaction against. But I wouldn't let that sour you on submitting to other festivals entirely! If you like Channel 101 stuff, make a Channel 101 show. The difficulty with being really really creative is that your ideas exist BECAUSE they're unusual and innovative. And so if there are non-creative criteria for entrance somewhere, and the more established the venue the more established the criteria generally, the least creative stuff is valued at the low end or entry level (it ticks the boxes) and the most creative stuff at the high end (it innovates). So you won't be at the level of high end stuff, but you're too creative for the low end stuff, and it's going to be unduly challenging and you wonder what's wrong with you. Well, the question is also what's wrong with the world. Really creative people often never get past the entry level. This is a real problem with companies, the visionary CEO eventually gets replaced with very conservative thinkers. You need to learn to think like your audience, and meet them half way. If this is a problem for you, or you've faced rejection, what to do about it is up to you. Making a festival on your terms is a good idea–it's where Slamdance and Channel 101 were born, even if they later sort of turned into what they began as being defined against. But if you see stuff you like coming out of Slamdance and Channel 101, maybe meet them halfway, and once you break into those communities, be even more and more creative. Once you get in, then you can push the boundaries more and more! Either way, look for other films you like, and find collaborators. Don't be myopic. I'd start small either way! Five-minute run times aren't a bad thing. The challenge is to pack all the creativity into it! Or hone your idea down to the best, smallest version of itself. Your next film won't be your best unless you let it be your last. So keep creating! And don't look (too far) back.

  30. I think 2 stop difference is plausible, considering A7III has a brand new BSI sensor and 1.5x larger photosite, 4K oversampled from 6K while X-T2 oversamples from 5K. BSI significantly boosts sensitivity/SNR while stacking boosts readout performance (both used in A9)

  31. It took waaaaaayyyy to long lol, I did everything VFX related on my own, hence why it took so long for me to complete, I also had little to no knowledge of 3D animating prior. I used element 3D inside after effects for 98% of it all. Used blender for some modeling. Id be getting close to finishing when I'd suddenly have a cool idea for a sequence and figured it would be a good time to learn. The original script for this film was 4 pages, ended up being a 15 minute film, yikes! got a little carried away haha, I couldn't imagine working with #D animation a few years ago. Thanks for watching! :D THANKS! I appreciate the viewership

  32. This is a sleeper camera. I haven't use one yet, and maybe I won't soon, but everyone I know and their wives (litterally!) bought a GH5 in 2017. Easily, that was the fastest and most bought camera I have ever seen in my social circle, since the 5DmkII. I agree with some people here, this should have been an EVA mini, the association with the GH5 does a lot of harm to this camera. GH was always a hybrid series, GH5S is 95% video. The color science seems (and has been mentioned in professional reviews) better than any previous GH or G or whatever Panasonic. Not only it's not Sony bad, actually it is reaching Canon territory optimized for flesh tones. I'll definitely have this in my radar, but even though I couldn't care less for IBIS, the lack of pro worth AF is something I do mind.

  35. So you want a GH5 that can't AF very well, not so hot DoF, not so hot in low light, and is only 20mp, when 70% of your stuff is Photos. Interesting. But it does have a joypad and so does the A7 mk III. I would go with a Olympus EM1 mk II over the GH5 if I was more into Photos if you want m4/3. But no joypad on it either. I can see a joypad as a plus. Works great looking through the EVF IF you are a right eyed shooter. If not your face will be in the way as a lefty. The you can use your nose on the joypad! I have had a Bunch of the Canon FF, APSH EoS 1D type bodies. I know all about joypads. Canon has had one for years and years on their Pro bodies. Not as easy to use as you would think with your face smashed up on the body. You sort of end up sticking your finger up your nose.

  37. The Canon M50... It's going to be a very personal camera, either you will have a USE for it or not. I personally speaking don't need it. For street photography, I'd prefer to use a Fuji or Leica. X-T20 is around same price as the Canon, so it doesn't necessarily have to be more expensive. Plus the native X-mount lens range is on a different planet to what is currently offered by Canon for EOS-M. For video, would rather use A7R II, GH5, X-H1. Of course, all a lot more expensive, but they are high-end... M50 is not meant to be. This is the weakest debut for 4K in a Canon ever, by the way. But if at some point Canon do 4k justice, I'm all in. 1D C was a wonderful beast second hand...and still is. 5D3 raw was a miracle. There's a lot to like from Canon... But it's ok to hate this one... just as it is ok to love it... if you find a use for a low-end camera, then that's great.

Regarding untouched footage - I am not sure why it should be problem. You can always claim to Samsung layers that it was all just joke and footage was captured by eg. RED camera and EXIF of DNG files has been edited However I can understand your worries in case you will release that hack for public usage. Needles to say that Magic Lantern team thinks that tuning own cameras is completely fine in same way as you can tune your own car or whatever. Moreover there were 2 hacks for NX1 in past and I think both guys who developed them have not faced any legal actions. I am sorry to say that but frame you have provided looks like heavily compressed and oversharpened H265. I really hope that real RAW sample is much better than this.

  44. So now it's been about 2 years since I started messing with Resolve and time after time, I find that Visioncolor Impulz luts are the best tools to get any footage - from DSLR to Alexa to look like film and in my eyes to look the best. Their webpage has an incredible manifesto about why using a LUT is good - is cool - is acceptable - and I couldn't agree more: http://www.vision-color.com/impulz/ The other luts I tried aren't - and I've tried them all - well the big ones and the new one but I don't want to mention their names because I don't want to say anything negative but the popular one has too much magneta in the highlights and has weird film pattern that looks artificial and the other one that just came out just has like 10 luts - not customized per each camera's view of what is acceptable for a film stock.
