    NX1 RAW VIDEO???

I got an email from Mr April Fools himself... "As promised, I will send you (download link) the footage of my Proof of Concept on time (01. April 2018) for evaluation. It would be very nice, if you could share your opinion honestly with me - after testing the maleability and behaviour, even when you do heavy grading. Please consider, that I will be not online from 01.04. at about 14:00 European time up to 04.04. in the morning, so I can NOT answer YOUR questions. I will try to write down most settings and as you are a very experienced technician, you will not have any problems with handling, for sure." Since it is pretty clear what's going on here, Arikhan has been banned from further participation in this forum, because he's a time waster.

    NX1 RAW VIDEO???

Exactly... I'm not letting this fly. He is not getting the attention he is seeking, off my back, that's for sure. And I know 100% it is bullshit, and if by any chance it isn't, he's free to post the raw recording mod / firmware binaries anywhere he likes on the internet.

    NX1 RAW VIDEO???

Not that this is a democracy or anything but I think we should let this drama play out... it’s only a day. With that being said, now the kid won’t be available for 3 days to answer any questions... a little too convenient. And with that being said... I don’t think the kid is lying. I think he found something but it’s a fudge more than it is true Raw recording.

  6. I had the Micro and used a 5” monitor with it. The camera is basically the size of a Rubix Cube, so a 5” monitor is ridiculously big for such a tiny camera. They should have either included, or sold, a small monitor that could be powered by the camera or had WiFi so your phone could be used as a monitor. The batteries for the Micro would last about 45min total... recording or not. A separate monitor’s battery lasts about an hour, so you were constantly changing batteries on either the camera or the monitor. I suppose if you want to rig up a tiny ass camera to be the size of a traditional cinema camera (I didn’t) you could have tapped the monitor and camera to a single large capacity Sony battery as you suggested. But if I am supposed to use the BMVA, then they really should have made it possible to control the camera’s menus through the BMVA. As is, working the simple menu interface became a guessing game due to the locations of the button. Eventually you could feel your way around the camera and figure it out but inevitably you would eff up and have to go back into the menu. The BMMCC has a beautiful image but just a piss poor design. Now there are some newer modifications and configurations that with the use of a cage, a break out box and a Ursa handle, you could have a tight little set up and if I were to buy one again, that is definitely the route I would go... native Micro 4/3 lens, small rig cage, Ursa handle, small rig top handle with the Ikan VL35 monitor attached to the top on some type of hinge so the monitor could be easily folded down for transport/storage. Here’s a picture of the smallest I got the rig. This was before there were any cages available for the camera, so improvised as much as I could for a cheap and inconspicuous run and gun solution. Now as you can see, I had a fairly large Minolta lens and adapter. If I were ever going to purchase another one, I would only use small Micro 4/3 lenses... either the Panny 14mm, or Panny 20mm or the Olympus 17mm. With one of those small lenses, the monitor would have dwarfed that rig.

  7. Good find, I’ve never seen this one before but it may just be the best example of what the Pocket and Micro are capable of. If I saw that in a theatre and someone told me it was shot on an Alexa, I would find absolutely no reason to doubt them. The way the contrast was handled, is just gorgeous. Damn. I’ve been searching for a slow motion camera for a while... hmm... I wonder how hard it would be to match it with 5D3 ML Raw footage for slow motion insert shots?

  10. Why me? And why today? And why can not you simple wait for a few days? A few days ... Does your wife have such a stress with you before Christmas too? You only have to wait till tomorrow in the late evening (23:59:59) and then you can: rightfully scold Arikhan or officially apologize here in the forum. Arikhan wrote March 15.: "Im have good news for you: I just shot RAW video with the NX1...RAW VIDEO in 25p - nice workflow with 25 DNGs per second. Just an unbelievable quality (in my eyes). Problem: I'm just writing my graduation exams...after that I'll download the footage (DNG images) and describe the methodology. It's quite special but it's great for my purposes. With the 60mm 2.8 at F6 an unbelievable detail and sharpness. It's quite exciting..." and then: "I mean, I can now shoot video in RAW format with the NX1. Uncompressed." "Internal. Next Monday a friend of mine will shoot exactly the same scene with a 8K RED, edit the footage on a 4K timeline and then...we will compare: NX1 4K RAW vs RED RAW... I am very curious..." "Yeah...I am very excited...Working on this for 7 months now... After exams I will have the time to do a usable workflow description and HowTo. I hope, it will be useful for the community. BTW: I think, @BTM_Pix will like it too, this guy is unbelievable in fiddling with electronics... " "I have economy exam on Wednesday." "But for now...I'm fighting with Keynesian & Marxian economics, globalization BS, European integration and so on for my exam tomorrow. Not funny at all..." "Last post now: I see, there are many questions and much to explain. My programming skills also seem to be better than my technical explanations. But one of the forum members offered me help and it would be better letting him to help me. It's not simple to explain technical stuff I'm involved with to other people. I wrote many assumptions/questions of forum members down, so I can answer them accurately after exams and after posting some examples, so people could see, what we talk about. "Abstract talk" only can get stodgy sometimes..." "Here is a screenshot from an early release. UHD | 25fps | 1/50 | Manual WB (blue hour like human eye sees it) | Zeiss O 28mm 1.4 at F7.1 | edit in post: slight WB correction | File edited with Premiere CC | Workflow recommended by @Mattias Burling --> here <--" "Andrew, just give me some time to work on this...I tried to explain a few things and got provoked and insulted - because people probably not understandung what I mean. I'd like to share the work first...Above this, there are some serious legal aspects to consider - and there is no answer yet from a lawyer society specialized in this issues... When this is done, I will share the RAW footage for evaluation. Please consider, I am a one man band when working on this - and got a live with many friends, family, sports, shootings, etc. After university-entrance diploma examinations, I will have some more time to spend on it. Be assured, I'll share my results here. BTW: Zero interest in financial compensation when working on this.

  11. Wow all three of these shots look like they came from a large sensor in Raw output! Just crazy good work with them, and BM is just amazing for what they produce output wise for the cost of these cameras. Damn it I Need to buy another one! They are that good.

  13. they are not coming with anything, this rumor is based on the rumors we have mentioned here already. It is amazing in the era of social media and "always-on-line" how rumors and fake news travel, and become a reality! IF, and I say, IF ever try to make an NX2, I am sure it will be the most heavy spec-ed and future proof camera ever built!

Wait, @lucabutera I never attacked you. Not once. If anything I agreed that the kid should have shown his cards. And I never defended the kid either. I was as skeptical as the next guy. But I also didn’t care because I never thought it was likely to begin with, nor would it ever affect me because I have no interest putting good money into a dead camera system. However I do love Raw video. But just because I was interested in watching this play fully out doesn’t mean I thought you were wrong.

  17. The biggest problem we had with learning to drive the Gurney Eagle was the damn gearbox. It had a Hewland 5 speed crash box in it. Which has straight cut gears in it and No synchronizes. The damn shifter handle was about 3 inches long LoL, and the gate was about 2 inches long, and hell it was double clutch up and down, matching RPM's. Jesus LoL. Try doing that going into a hairpin turn at 180 mph! I Never got comfortable with it and the brakes were so Damn good they would upset the geometry if you stabbed them, and then you were swerving like hell..It was a Hairy ass ride I can tell you that.

  21. Very nice write up! sony ibis is really weak, probably because there is not much movement inside the camera. I used Sony for full 2 years but still dumped them at end and never look back, at the end I never really bond with them due to ergnomics and colour (though I just got x3000 because its the only action cam with OIS on it and the price is even cheaper than Chinese competitor due to Easter sale XD)

  22. Interesting results. I watched the video on my phone, so could be wrong, but there are a few things I want to say. You defined highlight clipping only by looking at the scopes, but I would say, that if you compare the first and the last test, it's visible, that the hanging leaves on the tree have less detail in the last shot, than in the first one. I'm saying, that maybe even if the scopes are not at 100%, the highlights are still blown. For a better test, I would suggest looking at highlights and shadows together, and look closely at the detail in them (basicaly, analyze highlights the same as you did with the shadows).

  25. Wow some of those cars where back in my hay day LoL. I was a Crew Chief, Mechanic on a D sports racer, and a B sports racer class, different owners, in SCCA back in the mid early to mid 70's. I dove a Formula V racer for a bit. I sucked at it LoL. I was better turning wrenches on them than driving one. Went all over the US for races with them. We won the Central Division once with the D sports racer in 1972 I think it was. That stuff was a Lot of fun, but damn time consuming getting them ready to race, and driving there and back. I don't know if any of you watch that show "Chasing Classic Cars", but the old guy, my age LoL, he Might be a bit older, the mechanic Richard on it, was a Unbelievable Formula V driver at the same time I was in it with SCCA. He was just about unbeatable. But he was a super nice guy, helped anyone that needed it. I think he drove a formula B Brabham BT16 a few times also? I would have killed for that race car LoL. It would have killed me I guess! My best friend and I used to race enduro Go Karts, they were fast as hell. I have a single engine that would do 120 mph on the straights, he had a twin engine one that would do 150 mph! , and he bought a Gurney Formula A race car, # 001, the first one ,Gurney Eagle Formula A, he Ever made. It had a Chevy 302 with Hilborn Injection on it. We drove from Ohio to California to pick it up. It was used, well used LoL but a beautiful car, Red as hell, it was blue and white to start with. I dove it a few times and it was scary as hell. We had it a few times up to 180 mph. He was a Lot better at it than I was was so he drove thank God! Crazy times. He was 4 years younger than I am, and just died of Cancer a few years ago. Scary stuff Cancer. The car looked pretty much like this one. Hell could even be it for all I know? Sure looks the same other than the color. It had side Pods on it when we bought it. Had to, due to rules changes. Before he bought it it had been wrecked at Laguna Seca and ended up in a Tree!! It had been repaired before we bought it and raced after. We talked to Dan Gurney a bunch of times on the phone. He was a damn nice guy.

  26. I Think it was either 1998 or 1999? I bought it from a camera store in Cincinnati, Ohio. The person traded it in for a DCS 560. I traded in my last 2 Hasselblad bodies and lenses for it. My wife and I, on the side, were doing model portfolios and it just seemed like the way to go at the time. And at that time most model agencies wanted prints in B&W, and wow film was Hard to get right at the time consistently, and the DCS 460 had just a beautiful B&W output with the Hot Mirror off. And they only needed 8x10 prints for the model agencies from the models. And the 460 could do that easy, and quick also. We had a full blown Dark Room at the house, and a photo, video studio, but it was time consuming compared to digital, and really pretty expensive with mistakes, and well trying to get the best results. We might take 50 shots or more , and that is a LOT of developing, printing effort. So the 460 paid for its self pretty quick. Plus we were doing a few weddings yet, not many by then, we wanted a couple of Weekends off LoL. Plus we were doing video ads for local company's, so we needed as fast of a turnaround as we could get. We jumped on the digital era as fast as we could. I was lucky my wife was as crazy as I was about photography, Video. But she died of cancer like I said before, in 2002, and I just lost my desire to go on with it. She was 50% of the engine that made it happen. I could not have done it if I wanted too. Plus I had 1 young son at home yet. So I gave up all the Photo, Video stuff and just moved on as they say. We were Too busy to be honest. I sort of blame myself to this day that maybe all the stress caused the Cancer with her. Hell I don't know. Hell I had a heart attack myself 4 years earlier from running my Excavation Company. Stress will kill your ass I can tell you that. We were about as busy as you can get. And in our mid 50's. Too old for all that shit on paper. My advice is to live as simple and debt free as you can. Having Lots of money isn't worth shit if you are gimped up or dead. It really is not worth it. But there are all kinds of people in the world, some can never stop working, and others who would rather not work at all LoL. It is what makes the world interesting. Be happy with a BMPCC or a GH4, A7s, unless you are making a living with Video. And if you are making a living doing it, well then you are going to be in a Never ending race for having to have the next best camera out there to stay on top! Been there done that! Not much to write home to Mother about at the end of the day when you get old and look back at it. Times goes fast as hell, but if you are enjoying what you do fine, but if you aren't, well you are wasting your precious time.

  30. I don't think they've been able to work out how to get higher resolutions than 720 vertical pixels to work properly when using the full aps-c sensor, due to the way the EOS M is designed, although they were trying find a way around that and they started having some success... but the video files so far resulted in a lot of corrupt frames. Here's the discussion about it: https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=16608.0 Perhaps MLVFS might be able to convert the files and read AWB properly? I believe it should now be able to work with lossless mlv files, however I don't know where to get the latest version of the program! With MLV App on Windows I can convert the MLVs to cdng without any issues (with the option to export uncompressed or lossless). Maybe try a previous build of the program to see if it works?

You sum it up pretty well. Thanks for reminding people how simple life was before people ask demanding things out of the given timetable. I am not sure if people realise how important are the graduation exams for educational systems such these. It definitelly influence at least the next -and probably most productive - decade of our lives, and for some, the rest of their lives. People having at least a university degree, understand for sure.

    Sony a7 III discussion

As much as I want 4k60p and as much as some of the competition is doing it so I'm sure Sony is feeling the pressure, I'm not super optimistic we'll actually get it, given that they can't even get 30p without cropping on the A7III. That does not bode well for going all the way to 60p at 4K. I'm guessing maybe we'll get a higher bitrate and maybe 10bit..
    1 point
  33. And it’s ProRes. The Pocket and Micro are amazing cameras. And still 4-5 years later, there is not as cinematic of an image from any camera at this price point. Who cares about 10bit, when you can have 12?
    1 point
  34. Yeah they really are special cameras. Every time I read too much discussion about 4K this or 4K that, I go back to my Vimeo favorites and watch some videos from the Pocket, the Micro or some ML Raw. This was shot handheld with a 14mm f/2.5 on the Pocket... no rig... no Speedbooster... just the Pocket and a native lens... I don’t even think he used an IR filter...
    1 point
  35. They really are amazing. Not as convenient or as loaded as some of the other cameras available, but for the price you cannot buy a nicer image. I think we all know that in this forum though. THAT'S who she was calling. I thought she was calling B&H.
    1 point
  36. I agree. However, the RX0 actually has preset zone focusing for video that exploits the 24mm lens - close= 20"- 3.5 feet. Far=3.5+. This is perfect for blind shooting. You just press one button to go from one to the other and one press back (you can actually use this to do a focus pull while shooting!).

  37. A frame shot run and gun in natural light with the pocket, it says a lot to me, you guys are impressing me with the Micro, I just sorely need a 4K cam
    1 point
  38. Either Sony releases a comparable camera form factor that delivers UHD at 60p or they have conceded that they can't compete with the GH5. Doubt that they will make such a concession.
    1 point
  39. I like the 60p, but it just has a different look that I prefer and I also find the screen on the Pocket to be a real pain, especially as my eyesight gets worse in my old age. ;-) I feel like if I'm going to hook an external monitor up then I would much prefer the Micro.
    1 point
  40. Do you know where I can set the gamut in camera on my F3? I could hire a colorist, because I don’t know how things work, or I cold try and understand how things work, and then make a sober decision. Not to say I didn’t reach ot to colorists. I did. Wanted to hire someone, but one of the candidates pointed out that my grade can actually look good, but on my screen exclusively. So he said that even if I hire him and he grades to taste, on my monitor and in my environment it will still look off, or different or even worse then what I currently have. So I’ve invested ina good monitor and decent calibration for now and am trying to understand the cam and it’s footage better.

  45. Thanks for that. I agree with pretty much all you found. The Sony advantages are slight, aside from full frame. The Fuji advantages are large, and unique to Fuji. I watched Northrup's follow up video last night. The clickbait headline was "2x better image quality" basically, and he knew full well what sensationalism that was, fresh from the Sony press junket, then tries to back peddle in a follow up video full of disclaimers, and that "2x = 1 stop" line, which should be infamous... should be on t-shirts... If I ever see him at a show or PR event, I'll shout "2x BETTER = ONE STOP!"

  46. I'm guessing you're pretty young? Building up a network is CRITICAL in this industry if you ever hope to advance in it. The old saying, "It's not what you know, it's who you know" is a harsh reality. Film festivals are a very good way to acheive this. At first, your network is a couple people. But then you have to imagine those people know a couple people, etc. Suddenly your web of people has grown and is growing expodentially, so don't feel it's unachievable. If you're shy, and lack confidence that's okay. All you need to work on is building up enough courage to start with small steps. Your confidence will grow as you get better and better at it. It's best to intact confidence while you're young. By the time you hit full adulthood people will have fuller expectations of you. The truth is, as a naturally shy person that feeling never goes away. But how you mitigate it can blossom to the point no one would have ever guessed you are shy. I'm very introverted. I don't like large crowds, it feels exhausting to me. I adore my personal space and I like a small group of close friends and deep conversation rather than idle chit chat. But we live in a world that caters and rewards the extroverted. That's just the way it is. Although introversion is becoming more accepted within western society, it's still not tipping the scale much, unless you're the troubled-starving artist type like Tim Burton. To be succesful in my career, I had to learn to adapt to society's expectations and demands. That never changes who I am on the core level. It simply just refines me around the edges so that I can acheive success in a world that implores to exist on the surface. Even organizing a small film festival could also be a great confidence booster for you.

  47. If (but I'm not) I was going hardcore (but still doing it on the ultra cheap "indie" budget) into color grading then I'd be buying an OSEE (or FSI if I could swing it) as my personal grading monitor. Plus some "cheap" (but decently good. OLED) BIG screen from JB HiFi (our local big box retailer, also over in Australia, but pick whatever is appropriate for your country... "Walmart"?) with the BMD Teranex with a reverse LUT as the set up for the client monitor. Together with either a Tangent Ripple or Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve Micro Panel.

  50. Its probably the cheapest working Alexa ever sold, at $7800 for the body only (best offer). With shipping and minimal accessories, there was another 1.5k added on. The seller neglected to mention (or didn't know?) that it had a history of salt water damage (I called Arri about the serial number). What this amounted to is that the SD card slot wasn't working when I received it. I got creative and cleaned the contacts in there, and it worked (the electronics in the cam are water-sealed after all). The upside of this is that it is a very recent model, with only 536 hours on the body. I intend to make a reference quality color conversion for a variety of cameras, with side by sides to document the conversion. And then, I'll probably use it for close ups and 120fps slow motion for a narrative thereafter
