  1. Hey, finally done with the trailer to our debut feature film at 55Media shot almost entirely on the Panasonic GH5 (some shots on the GoPro6 and P4P) in just 12 days. Our best work yet. Movie is still going through post-production. Production company: 55Media Director/Writer: Uche Aguh Director of Photography: Dennis Schmitz (me) Assistant Director: Ukairo U. Ukairo. Starring: Jarius Drew Sowells, Kayode Akinyemi, Vincent Ramirez, Thiree Pinnock, Julian Horton, Obum Nwankwo and J Shawn Durham as 'Daddy G' Editing done in Premiere. Colorgrading done in Davinci Resolve. Dealing with the usual quirks of this camera, but results are still great. More information: www.imdb.com/title/tt7928156 www.55media.net

    Motion Cadence

@sam first of all thanks for the very informative test. To me it seems that there are occasional "hiccups" where S8 and 1DC in lesser degree miss a step and skip to the next. So motion cadence (defined as the quality of motion?) is affected not only by shutter speed, shutter type & codec but also consistency of frame times. But there is no need to get defensive... fuzzynormal just stated his opinion, and to a large extent I agree with him since shutter speed to me affects the motion cadence the most. Even in your test at the beginning I could not tell the difference, and only when I slowed down to 1/4 the speed I could point to the delays. I might not be the most sensitive person to the motion cadence, but I doubt the majority of people would notice either especially when not comparing it with other cameras. For example has anyone complained about the motion cadence of 1DC ? Now the tessive shutter article that you posted is also very interesting. I didn't know about it, but that at least partly explains our subjective opinion that a slower shutter than 180 can help with the motion blur. Let's keep this place on the positive side, and I welcome any tests that you do! Cheers

World class DP's are not wrong. They've earned the right to squint hard at their images and navel gaze about 'em. They're upper echelon craftspeople that pixel peep because they can/should and have opinions that are relied upon for big budget productions. I, on the other hand, am using a consumer camera that cost less that the Twizzler supply at their craft services table. And, even then, the camera I'm using creates images that look ridiculously amazing. The gap between what I have on my computer desk and what Roger Deakins is using is so close that even I sometimes have a hard time telling the difference. And even if I could readily tell the difference, would it really matter anyway at my level? For me the answer is "no." I'm blessed with great cheap gear. If it's not perfect it doesn't bother me all that much, honestly. I just work with it and make it the best I can. Slowing the shutter is one trick I've used that I really like. I dunno. I'm a guy that likes noticeable motion blur. Which, BTW, the tessive filter appears, to my eye, to allow. So, a little more motion blur from a slower shutter just looks kind of "analog" to me --and that's neat-o. I suggest that if anyone is bummed about how their camera renders motion cadence at a 180 shutter, try slowing it down a touch. You might appreciate the results. You may not. But experimenting is allowed!

  5. This is not a DSLR, but it probably has the most lasting value of any: the Sony FS700R, which came out in 2012 and has been upgraded by firmware updates since then. It has the same sensor as the FS7 and FS5, and now shoots via SDI 4K DCI 12bit RAW, 4K DCI 60P , and 4K DCI 120P in burst mode via the SDI port (exactly the same capability as the FS5). No actual camera has yet best that. It is ugly and ungainly, but its innards are good and its buttons and dials work well.

  6. This looks great, I can’t wait to watch it! I’m going to make another post about older cameras and how they’re still viable today so I won’t step on this post’s toes anymore. Hopefully people will link to some samples like this. @sanveer sorry for the off topic.

  7. The mewlips controller is unusably laggy for me also. After finding that the remote viewfinder app only worked with native lenses and the mewlips was unusable, I too searched for a way to monitor with a smartphone. I found nothing that was inexpensive. Apparently, you can use some sort of USB capture card and OTG cable for Android, but it would have been expensive and inelegant. Hopefully, the LukiLink project will finish soon because that seems like the solution you and I are hoping for. If you're on a tight budget and just need an external screen, you can get Raspberry Pi monitors for cheap.

  8. Keep at it Danilo, maybe write a one minute short film to propel your tests. When I got my 5D3 and started shooting ML Raw on it, I jumped into a short and I was forced to not only learn the ins and outs of the camera but also to think more about composition and light. In the end, I think it really helped. Good luck and please keep posting your progress... there aren’t many C200 owners on this site.

  9. Looks very good. Out of curiosity, did you think of adding some grain? It already looks very impressive as it is, the grain may just add a little bit more. My two cents.

  10. I was having a discussion in another thread and like I usually do, it got off topic. So rather than step on the other OP’s toes, I decided to make a new thread. About once a year, usually when a new camera is announced, I become nostalgic about the cameras of yesteryear and I realize how many great cameras have been on the market the past ten years... WOW... has it been almost 10 YEARS since the beginning of the DSLR Revolution or as Andrew Reid likes to call it... “the democratization of filmmaking?” I’ve been lucky to test out a few of those cameras, but there are a bunch that have eluded me. Maybe I am feeling nostalgic as I watch footage from my 5-6 year old camera but it seems there are some gems that are still available both new and used on the marketplace. Part of me wants to test them all before the new models make those fossils extinct. So I figured I’d love to hear some of people’s favorite cameras over the past 10 years and maybe some videos to show those cameras at their best. I posted this in the other thread but I can’t stop watching the first and last couple minutes of it. It was shot on the original C100 and to me looks as cinematic as they come... And here are a couple from the GH2 that makes me smile every time I watch them... Please share some of your favorites and if you were forced to shoot with an older camera... which one would you choose?

  11. Some observations: The clip is obviously dropping frames. No doubt the SD card the person popped into the camera wasn't fast enough to keep up. The clip was shot with a frame rate of 25P. I figured this out by interpreting the clip at different frame rates and at 25 the sound syncs perfectly with the picture. You can hear the clicks on the camera when the operator was changing the exposure. Each click should sync with a change in brightness of the picture. And this happens when the clip is playing back at 25P. All in all a good showing.

  15. I used a manual Nikkor 50mm f1.4 as my interview lens for the longest time. On a Canon 5D first and then speed-boosted-adapted onto M43 cams. While you can see some quality gap between a cheap "dumb" Chinese speed-booster and Metabones I really felt like it wasn't enough a a difference for the $$. That's me. Not sure how particular you are. So, cheap booster bought on ebay cost, what, less than 100 bucks?

  18. It is pretty amazing what can be done with this camera. I still have mine. I paid $175 for it during the original fire sale. No real reason to sell it, so I figure I may start messing with Magic Lantern on it. I did try Raw on it a few years ago but I really couldn’t get rid of the pink dots without chroma smoothing and the IQ took a hit. With the new leaps of SD cards and ML Raw, it sounds like some interesting things for the future. But the crazy thing I’ve noticed is that even the simple 3x Bitrate bump does wonders for this camera. @Matt Kieley has some great samples. Sure it isn’t Raw but for small, fun little videos why put up with the added workflow?

  19. New real video from the FS5 II minus the new PP and the black ND dial. Shot in Slog2 RAW, recorded on the Shogun Inferno using ProRes HQ, graded in Resolve Studio. Is a test of the $298 Sony DT 55-300mm lens.

  20. That motion blur looks bad too. I have doubts as to whether that is really shot on blackmagic or whether that's graded GH5 log footage.

  21. The "original" is not a clip from the camera. It is not ProRes 422, but 28 Mbps, H264, 8bit 420. This is totally misleading or else I did not see an explanation. This is just an edited promo piece. It could have been shot with anything.

Yep I too find that using a slower than 180 shutter works great. 1/40 for 24p looks fine for fast motion.

  25. I've started calling it the P4K after I saw someone use it. BMPCC was already kind of ridiculous, but BMPCC4K went straight to plaid. P4K-422 sounds like a Stargate SG-1 destination.

  26. Ah ok, well, you can download the Lite version of 15b1 on the website and try opening that? Quick link for anyone who wants it: www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/ Speaking of the website, I just saw that on the Video Assist page, under the 'Work with Professional Software' heading, it says 'Since it comes bundled with DaVinci Resolve Lite......' So @Cinegain is right, and I'll stop looking for that card haha. Here's hoping you have better luck with the studio version if you get the P4K @jonpais What are we nicknaming this camera anyway? BMPCC4K? P4K? Batcam?

  27. The viola is cool! It's not super bright, but for its size it's quite good and useful even for non-special purpose work as an on-camera LED or fill light. Its LEDs seem weirdly harsher than usual but not a big problem. The strobes show some rolling shutter, I only see it on the attack and not the decay which is weird but probably just chance and they sustain for a while, so it's nice. Don't use this if you have epilepsy... very crazy light.

Yes. 4k clog mjpeg. I went through a check list for each cam to make sure each setting was as it should be, double checked right before recording. Fuzzy, Did you check out the link to the cml thread? Or the tessive filter? If it was as simple as changing your shutter why would world class Dp's be discussing this topic? Why would the tessive filter exist? But I do agree with you about not always needing to adhere to a 180 degree shutter. Love the look and feel of the clips you posted fairly recently by the way!

  29. Hi! Here are some good quality screenshots from a clip that was posted in a BMPCC4k Facebook group. I have the footage in my HDD (12 GB for about 4 minutes), I may re-upload it (original link is gone), but I already feel like a thief writing this post ^^ The footage looks clean and beautiful. No visible noise, just a fine grain. It is not really representative of the final output of the camera but it looks very promising. I graded it with FilmConvert and the BMPCC video preset. No sharpening, no noise reduction https://www.dropbox.com/sh/z7p2hmyot33myhh/AAAULea367Tvyf3zJ4qYcHOZa?dl=0

  31. Ha! no, worries, just imagine how we feel when we pay the prices here. 1.295USD is 1.050euros by the way, so you get the point, it is even worst! That applies to Japanese and Korean products too, much more expensive in Europe, Chinese are similar I guess.

  32. With that much money in glass why cheap on out the adapter? Just get the speed booster XL and be done with it.

  33. It’s on my list of films to watch. In regards to your last statement... I can never tell if you’re poking fun or actually giving a compliment due to the language barrier but I tend to just accept the positive interpretation. Lol. With that being said, while I enjoy all of the benefits of new technology and cheap cameras discussed in posts like this, there are so many great cameras from yesteryear available for next to nothing now. And any one of them is capable of creating beautiful visual stories. In some ways, a $1500 C100 sounds more appealing than a $1300 P2. And in every way, the same story told on both cameras will have the exact same visual and emotional impact.

Yes it does. So does the 1dc. To give a better idea of the distance and speed the pendelum travels, the length of the pendelum is roughly 6ft, and the outside black lines 6ft apart. So for most of the clips, the pendelum is only moving about 3ft. (1.5 ft on each side of the center) Also consider it basically comes to a stop at the peak of it's arc. In other words, natural human movements, like walking at a casual pace, picking up a coffee or an actor turning their head quite easily have the potential to be effected. Maybe subconsciously people notice this. Or not ?

This is a portrait I took with the Voigtlander 17.5mm and GH4 a couple of years ago. With all these cool M43 cameras out/on the horizon I wish I'd kept the Voigty set now. . . and added the 10.5.

  44. A "pro" shared by all three (yet is very rare at this price point!): timecode inputs! It is an unknown however as to which of the three are implementing it best, my money is on perhaps the BMPCC4K https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1304877-REG/panasonic_dmw_xlr1_xlr_microphone_adapter.html The Panasonic DMW-XLR1 is a specific pro in favor of just the GH5. The mini XLR input is a pro just in favor for the BMPCC4K

  45. Yeah, I'm a big false color user myself, and I wish Panasonic added that to my GH5S.

  46. I think it's interesting that in all of the promo shots and in all of Grant's interviews the Pocket2 always has an Oly 24-40mm on it I understand their choice from an aesthetic perspective it looks good on the camera...almost like a system. But I have one pretty much always mounted on one of our Micros. It's kind of a perfect "all around" lens for the new camera - a relative 25-83mm 2.8, it will allow for push AF and has great two stage manual focusing and it's the sharpest zoom I've shot with.

  47. No in camera NR and Sharpening. That's what I want from Panasonic, and they're actually able to do that (EVA-1). Why is this so hard?
