  1. That is an excellent review shared by @jindrich. Interesting to see the behavior of the IBIS in the "Laguna Beach" video. I've just packed up the X-H1 I recently purchased and sent it back to Adorama. It really is an excellent camera and so many improvements over the X-T2 for a true hybrid shooter. These were my issues: I also experienced too much jerkiness with the IBIS. In "Laguna Beach" you can see some of the hops and jerks now and then, even within their chosen edit. Even with smooth, slow pans, I would have a fair bit of this. I spoke with a Fuji tech yesterday and "Dan" informed me that is was likely an issue of "buffer on the sensor" and that was all he could say. There are time too when the IBIS produces an effect akin to a warp stabilizer in post that I loathe. I also picked up a Fringer Pro adapter and much prefer the quality of the stabilization I get in my Canon 17-55/2.8. I am using this with both my X-T2 and tried it with the X-H1, both IBIS off and lens stabilization on and IBIS on and lens stabilization off as well as both on. For me, relying on the lens stabilization in the Canon produced the best look consistently. I would love to use my fast, small Fuji primes, obviously, but this 1st gen. just IBIS just isn't there yet for me. The other issue I had was the increased aliasing in the X-H1's 1080p/60 vs. the X-T2. It's there. So with the Fringer adapter, the upcoming firmware, and examples like what @Vladimir posted, I've got a lot of mileage to pull from my X-T2 still. Feeling good about that. Excited about that shutter mechanism coming to the X-T3 or an X-H2 with better IBIS and aliasing control. Oh, lastly, I think the new grip is not universally better. It is better than an X-T2 w/o the battery grip, which I shoot with, but felt just a bit more than what I wanted. Subjective, is all.

  2. Inspired by this thread, I dug up my first clips from the FS700R and made a 4K DCI (60P and 120P) video to show its colors are still competitive. Shot in Slog2, recorded by the Shogun Inferno, and edited In Resolve Studio with no LUTs (Davinci Color Management).

  3. For dual ISO you need separate analog circuits on the sensor. So hardware. The software just switches between these analog circuits at a specific ISO value. There is no strictly software dual ISO because that means applying gain, which would always amplify the noise floor as well.

Very brief trip to London where I decided I wasn't going to trawl around used shops and buy a lens. And I succeeded in that I didn't buy a lens but two. Both quite different and many years apart in age. Had about 10 seconds to put them both on a GX80 and take a short clip in the street with each before I got on the train. First up is one that @jonpais turned me on to which is the Sigma 30mm f1.4 native MFT Next up is saying hello to an old friend 20 years after I sold the first one I had which is the Nikon 105mm f2.5 AIS The discount on the Sigma paid for almost half the price of the Nikon. Which is the story I'll be sticking to when I get home.

  5. It is not "crazy", it is the most common situation, at least in my field. Current corporate job, we have the common trio of EF lenses (18-200) and I have to change a lot of dozens of times per working day and that is the least of my concerns. We have a car full of equipment and just 1 (me) and a half (DoP) people to do all the carrying, setting up, sound, using the cameras e.t.c same story in TV, and documentaries, live events e.t.c Directors and producers do not carry anything -hardly themselves, and have no clue what focal length they want, so better to have a couple of zooms, instead of 5 primes! I seriously looking forward to have a camera and 2 lenses combo for my next setup, hopefully parfocal with AF and a zoom rocker, not see it happen though.

  6. It seems those blinking pixels mentioned in this thread will be fixed with the new 1.01 firmware, which is already downloadable: Resolves an issue where blinking pixels may appear at bottom edge of the camera setting and with certain lenses, especially during XAVC S 4K (PAL 25p) recording Resolves a rare issue where the touch panel cannot be operated Improves overall stability of the camera

  10. I think the thing that astounds me is that for a standalone 5 inch daylight viewable external monitor from a company like SmallHD you are looking at a price not too dissimilar from the price of the entire camera! But along with including LUT previews, you also get the added benefit of baking in LUTS. The OS of the blackmagics is second to none. The touchscreens are like what you would find on a smartphone. The same cannot be said of Sony's or Fuji's top-end cameras which leave a lot to be desired. Canon and Panasonic get it right, though. That's some kind of value. Really makes you think about what the profit margins are for companies like SmallHD and the bigger players in the industry.

    Feiyutech a2000

The new Feiyutech a2000 was sitting at my door waiting to great me on Friday. I had purchased this gimbal as a replacement of the Zhiyun Crane V2. I had found the Zhiyun to be less than ideal for flying the GH5 with the anamorphic adapter installed. The is largely because when counterbalanced the movement of the camera is more limited. Comparing the two I would say the Feiyutech is better made, and better thought out. It can easily accommodate the larger anamorphic setup and at no point feels overworked. The remote is built into the handlebars, which can be folded for transport. setup is a breeze and minor changes to the balance of the camera do not require rebalancing. It is easy and fast to use. And these are two things I like a lot. Below is some quick footage of the GH5 with SLR Magic 40 Compact anamorphic adapter on the a2000. The taking lens is the 35-100mm f2.8 ver 2, which is quickly becoming my goto lens when shooting anamorphic. Comment welcomed. Enjoy!

The 35mm f/2 was one of the lenses I regret selling. I had a great copy I only paid 70 bucks for. I had it for a year, sold it and nearly tripled my money. Of course now it’s hard to find a good copy for less than $200. I had sold it in favor of the 35mm 1.4, but since realized I should have kept the f/2 instead. The 1.4 is special but my copy had a weird color shift wide open... blues looked brown. Obviously I could correct for it, or stop down, but at that point I should have just kept the f/2 because my copy was pretty sharp wide open. Oh well, you live, you learn. Since I last replied, a half hour ago, I started looking at some of the original SMC Pentax lenses. I think they’re referred to as the K Versions in Pentax circles. What I find interesting about them is they’re supposed to be the same optical formula as the Takumars with better coatings, and they didn’t use Thorium, so there is no risk of the common yellowing that some Takumars have. I briefly had the 50mm 1.4 and 35mm 3.5 a few years back and they were pretty amazing. As I said in a previous comment, I only have a couple Series E lenses and some old non-ai’s, so I’m not really invested in Nikkors right now... My other option that kinda intrigues me is slowly collecting some old Canon FD L lenses and then getting the Ed Mika conversions done to them. I had a Canon 50mm 1.4 that was converted and I really liked how they easily rendered a vintage look with similar color characteristics as their modern EF siblings. I don’t know... just thinking out loud. My GF could not care less, so luckily for you, you’re stuck reading my musings... lol. And yeah, the Sigma looks good. And you’re right it could act as a fast modern 55 or 58mm lens. Are you definitely getting a Pocket 4K... I’m kinda undecided now. I’m definitely not going to be an early adopter, so for now, I am going to continue to enjoy my 5D3. What happens next year, when I’d be ready to buy one, who knows? It’s insane to think about what could be available. Although unlikely, for all I know, a Canon FF mirrorless could have 1080p RawLite with DPAF... that would become a no brainer for me. For my style of shooting, I’m really interested in getting a camera with DPAF, but for the money, the P2 is pretty special. But then I’ll be pondering a new lens quagmire. Ugh. Lol. Anyway...

It ended up costing £140. I've seen them cheaper but it is in very decent condition so I'm not complaining ! I'm going to Japan next month for the first time in just on 20 years so I'm going to try and root out a couple more ais lenses from my youth like the 35mm f2 and the 200mm f4. They won't necessarily be any cheaper but my experience of buying used in Japan is that they are almost without exception in far better condition. That Sigma has a lot more vibe in it than that grab would suggest when you get in closer by the way. I think its a very decent choice for a standard lens on the Pocket4K as with the smaller crop it won't be far off 55mm equivalent FOV.

  21. I’ve always had a soft spot for Sony and the FS line, and that video is proof why... really nice. I love how you didn’t use any LUTS. I struggle with post color, and I’ve recently stopped using LUTS all together and started watching a bunch of tutorials. It seems in the long run, it will pay off, even if it’s a more difficult process.

@BTM_Pix they both look nice... but damn that Nikkor! I’ve been exploring all of my lenses and lens options over the past few months. For financial reasons, I’ve sold some I wish I could have kept and tested some I wish I never bought. And in the end, for my manual lenses, I’m gonna end up going full circle back to ai-s Nikkors. The price/quality ratio really is unmatched on the used market. I hope to keep everything in the f/2 range and that 105mm looks brilliant.

  23. Both. Everything in hardware has implementation in software. And vice versa. Even Sony Entry-level ILCs like the A6300 ans A6500 have dual native ISOs and that is why their low light is pretty usually upto ISO320 or ISO6400.

I would say the majority of the shots were out of focus, if any main subject was the point - the dog, the woman, the man. The motions were way too swift, and almost nauseating. I am not sure what this video is supposed to demonstrate about this rig. With camera movements that fast you can often get away with no gimbal. To see a gimbal's prowess I would think that you want to asses if there is shake for a static shot that lasts more than 2 seconds and what happens when the operator moves with the camera, not so much (as here) what happens when the operator stays in place and the camera is moved around.

  26. That makes sense. With dual ISO sensors they way the circuitry is tuned, usually you sacrifice the performance at lower ISOs in order to gain performance in the higher ISOs.

  27. One thing to note about Mitch Gross is that he's the *cinema* production manager at Panasonic, and as such has no responsibility for the GH5 or GH5S. I don't know what the context of that comment is, but I've very rarely seen him drawn into comment on the consumer range. He is someone who would likely know what they're talking about on this topic though. I believe he spent the previous while working for atomos on their recorders.

  31. @salim Thank you for the post on the Largesense camera. We have discussed it before in this forum in a few threads, but it is always helpful to revisit the camera, especially now that Largesense seems to be taking orders. Thank you for the link. I had never heard of this project. Basically, he has made a large format DOF adapter, except this adapter uses front projection, rather than the typical rear projection. That makes it unique, but it sort of necessitates dual tilt or dual shift (simultaneous tilt or shift with the each lens). I would guess that a rear projection DOF adapter with condensing optics would be more efficient than this front projection system, but a lot depends on the projection screen material. Speaking of large format DOF adapters, our own @Gonzalo_Ezcurra created the ECyclops (20"x20") and the "Mini" Cyclops (14"x14") several years ago. Here is one of his videos showing the rack focusing on the MiniCyclops: In addition, our own @richg101 created the splendid Forbes 70 medium format DOF adapter.

  33. Here's a long, somewhat professional, video-centric review of the XH1: And here what it can do under professional hands: I'm about to try out the camera soon, but I'm almost decided. Fuji+Flog+Eterna is the closest I've seen to an ALEXA under €10k, highlight rolloff, color, and motion. On top of that, lenses are superb, it's a perfect hybrid camera -it's great for photos-, the new Linear ManualFocus solves focus by wire issues, the High EVF with focus peaking is perfect for MF, and the XH1 along with the XT20 make a great A/B combo system -for peanuts.

  35. The EOS M50 Rocks! It's not the spec king of mirrorless cameras but the canon eos m50 just works! The auto focus, canon colors, canon menus, and just the overall ease of use makes this camera perfect for me and my passion projects. Here is a link to some shots I grabbed with the camera while my students were filming their short film. Forgive me for the bad sound. The students recorded sound separately but not while I was filming. The sound is decent. Overall this was just a test to see how would this camera would look under cinematic lighting. I got this camera for vlogging mainly but after seeing what it was able to produce with good lighting I'm definitely going to be using it for my short films. Here is the link to the camera test:

  36. Some observations: The clip is obviously dropping frames. No doubt the SD card the person popped into the camera wasn't fast enough to keep up. The clip was shot with a frame rate of 25P. I figured this out by interpreting the clip at different frame rates and at 25 the sound syncs perfectly with the picture. You can hear the clicks on the camera when the operator was changing the exposure. Each click should sync with a change in brightness of the picture. And this happens when the clip is playing back at 25P. All in all a good showing.

  37. Good to know thanks. I had the 12-35mm with the OG Pocket and it seemed okay. Most likely I’ll use c-mounts or maybe I’ll get a Voigt. I saw a few videos and the Panny 14mm f/2.5 looked pretty good on the original Pocket as well.

  38. Thanks. With my Sandisk Extreme Pro 95mbps cards I was getting bitrates into the 90s sometimes. These are my EOS M videos. Both have grain added but the original images were very clean. The first video is 3x bitrate and has some grading, but the lobster claw segment is the off the card color, with grain added. The second video was entirely 720p60, with the bitrate between 2.7-3x I believe. The detail/sharpness isn't bad considering it's just 720p, although you can tell the moire is a lot worse.

  41. This is not a DSLR, but it probably has the most lasting value of any: the Sony FS700R, which came out in 2012 and has been upgraded by firmware updates since then. It has the same sensor as the FS7 and FS5, and now shoots via SDI 4K DCI 12bit RAW, 4K DCI 60P , and 4K DCI 120P in burst mode via the SDI port (exactly the same capability as the FS5). No actual camera has yet best that. It is ugly and ungainly, but its innards are good and its buttons and dials work well.

  48. Strange indeed. I don't really see a point to upgrade to this if you own the mk1, but then again if you are going to upgrade from an fs5 you're probably going to move up to an fs7 or something similar.
