  1. I think that in any serious evaluation of BM impact and consequences it is аdvisable to consider one highly important factor - pure personality behind. If I am not wrong, Grant Petty has total drivе-control of BM policy, and it seems to me that it is a man devoted to personal vision and strong feeling of his world-mission. For him, profit alone is not The most important goal - although of course important - but craving to make/left some relevant trace behind him. Some sort of Steve Jobs, maybe... What BM done with Resolve is wonder - and it seems that Petty decisively follow his idea of democratizing movie-making to the utmost boundaries... So, to me all other reasons/aspects of this one attempt are simply executive and secondary - it seems to me that here we are also witnessing to higher evolution of someone noble self-actualization, in the meaning that, say, Abraham Maslow gave to that syntagm...

  2. Firstly this review was with the old firmware and Samsung addressed most of the issues with the later firmware. The credibility of Cinema5D is probably less than Mata Hari the double agent. And their ability to take criticism is worse than Uwe Boll. The sheer number of rude comments on this very post of Cinema5D highlights the very problem with brazenly biased reviews. They wrote a scathing initial review of the GH5 too calling the Vlog a joke or unusable or something on those lines. I believe Panasonic threatened to sue, so they took down their article to re-write It, removing all the vitriolic rubbish that had made itself to the initial review. This kind of shamelessly biased writing dismisses any hope of credibility. That's more than a lot of full frames of that time (including the 5D Mark ii and iii).

  3. Sir, you are, to put it mildly, talking out of your ass. I'd shot Canon for years before jumping to the NX1 as my main photography camera (commercial, portraits - studio and outdoors), and it's not even fair competition to the Canon (ever tried lifting the shadows off black hair on a Canon?). The NX1 has an insane dynamic range, and I find it does comparably well next to a Nikon or Sony. And I say this as someone who still uses the NX1, and has done photo shoots side by side with a Sony A7R2 and a Nikon D850.

Yeah but the damn lens is another Variable Aperture lens. Who the hell needs that for video? That was part of the problem with the original lens. Crazy that Canon of all company's going to a 4/3 sensor! Wonder if it will be the same Sony sensor that is in the GH5s, 4K BMPCC, Kinefinity 4k Terra?

  6. I wouldn't switch now, especially from a 1DX2 + $6K Canon glass. All rumors are pointing towards a FF mirrorless from Canon probably announced around Photokina. Also 1DX2 is a beast and imo destroys the A73 in terms of IQ. The file sizes might be huge but they produce super thick imagery with that cinematic intra-frame motion. The A73 AF is good, but nowhere near Canon's dual pixel reliability & smoothness. Let's not even get started on color science & WB..

  7. I dont know what your problem is BUT he is a 1Dx ii user who had the A7iii 'for about a week'. It is almost certainly littered with 'new toy' exaggerations although he did at least vlog with the camera.. But the Op here asked for opinions. And I dont know who is better to give opinions than someone who has used both cameras. Admittedly a week isnt a long time but it is fairly long in terms of the A7iii when the camera was only released in the US two weeks ago. If you happen to be better qualified to give your opinions go ahead....

Cokin do a little adapter to use their A series filters with compact cameras that might be come in useful for you for this problem. It attaches to the tripod mount of the camera and has various lanes you can put it in to move it front and back. I suspect it might not be long enough to put the filter far enough forward with those lenses but its trivial to extend it out with a piece of aluminium etc. A Series filters cover equivalent of up to 67mm filter thread so will be fine for anything up to there and the holder takes 3 of them. Obviously, once you have Cokin A series filters you get access not only to their workman stuff like NDs and grads etc but also to their classic 70s and 80s soft porn toolkits !

  9. Thanks! I don't know about 60p in Raw, I'm not sure I've hard of anyone doing it. It actually crashed a few times when shooting with the bitrate at 3x so I had to drop it to 2.5x (I also tried 2.7x but that crashed too). All you need to install ML is the right Canon firmware 2.0.2 or whatever, and a fully charged battery. This is a good video that walks through how to do it: Incidentally, the maker of the video, Ryan Moorman, made some great videos with the EOS M and ML. His videos, as well as the videos of Victor Suwatch, and Johnny Santo Domingo were my initial inspiration to get the EOS M. These are my favorite EOS M videos:

  10. The Canon XL2 was a fabulous camera. I still wish that Canon would release a Super 35mm camera in that form factor. It reminds me of an Aaton or Eclair film camera. Off the tripod, on the shoulder. And the colors were excellent. In that same vein, I also look upon the DVX100 fondly. That first generation of 24p DV had some kind of special sauce. I own a C100 mk. 1 and while it's not yet vintage, I think that people will keep shooting with it long into the 4K, 8K, 16K, etc age. A lot of soul and charm in a small package.

  11. If they do come back with a new camera it would be hilarious if they announced it had RAW and was being released on April 1st. This forum would turn up outside their door like this. With a lone voice pleading to think of the children.

  12. I dont see it myself. The numbers dont really add up. The digital camera market (ILC/compacts) is a US$10bn a year market of which Canon/Nikon/Sony hold 85%. If Samsung re-entered the market and we heroically optimistically assumed they gained a 10% share - it would only amount to US$1bn a year - less than 0.5% of Samsungs US$200bn+ annual sales. Compare that to the US$500bn a year smartphone industry. However there are, I think, two 'possibilities that could bring Samsung back into the market. First, Samsung and Nikon are almost a 'perfect' fit. Samsung key competencies are electronics and Nikon's core competency is photography - ideal when cameras are turning into electronic products. Samsung brings image sensors, image processing, lcds etc and Nikon brings lenses, brand, market share and distribution. Furthermore, Nikon is ultimately going to be seriously disadvantaged long term relying on Sony for sensors (Sony being a major and growing competitor in cameras). So a joint venture/strategic partnership between the two makes a lot of sense (assuming that Samsung is interested in the digital camera to showcase its tech.) Second, and related to this, Samsung could quite easily acquire Nikon. Samsung is a US$300bn market cap company and Nikon is a US$6bn market cap. company. So acquiring Nikon is chicken feed to Samsung. So if Samsung wants to reenter the market, it makes a lot of sense to buy into the market rather than try to recreate their market share from scratch. But even the Nikon/Samsung tie up in one form or another I see as pretty unlikely because Samsung really hasnt shown a lot of ambition in the image sensor market (despite some press reports to the contrary.) Take the flagship S9/S9+ as an example. It continues to use both Samsung and Sony image sensors (and people dont seem able to tell the difference.) https://***URL removed***/news/0634864640/tech-insights-teardown-confirms-galaxy-s9-uses-samsung-and-sony-image-sensors So if Samsung cant be bothered to showcase their image sensor tech in their flagship smartphones, I dont think they are likely to do it in digital cameras.

  13. What kind of filmmaker thinks he can just grab a LUMIX camera and shoot a film? Don't people know you can't make a movie without accurate skin tones, non-oversharpened footage, good camera work, and a real microphone? Somebody should tell this so-called "filmmaker." He's obviously in way over his head! ;-) https://youtu.be/jpjRQokeQNo

  17. Quality of the mic pre-amps, more channels, dual level recording, compressors and all the other reasons you'd use an external recorder? The control box is attached to the recorder and speaks to the camera wirelessly (wifi on Panasonics and Bluetooth on the Pocket 2) so keeps you cable free if you have a dedicated sound recordist or the camera is on a gimbal and you want to keep the recorder off it. Yeah, the DR70 could do with a grown ups mode where phantom power can be switched on without it reacting like you want to put a toaster in the bathtub.

  18. I actually like the look of the RawLite footage very much, although it is a little too saturated for my tastes. I think the biggest “issue” with this test is the randomness of it. It seems you are really trying to work out the kinks of using a new cinema camera. So, I’m unsure if using an event like this is the best time and place to sort it out? If I were you, I’d find the most peaceful, beautiful place in your town. When the light is perfect, go there, with your tripod and shoot no more than 3-5 minutes of footage... edit that down to a 1-2 minute video and correct and grade the footage. I also think that just using Lumetri for your tests may yield better results. Keep the correction/grade as simple as possible. Also, are you shooting cLog? Because a simple cLog to Rec709 LUT should give you a great starting point and then just a light contrast and saturation adjustment will get you the rest of the way there. And... doesn’t the C200 have built in ND filters?

  19. I've had access to an A7III for over a month. My opinion stands. Same 8-bit 4:2:0 100mbps XAVC-S codec. Hot pixels. Motion issues. Even more convoluted menus. AA filter. strong NR at high ISO..etc ..so I'd disagree with "significantly better than their predecessors in every way possible".

  20. This is the most facinating camera I have ever seen in my life. Not just because of its technical ability or its ridiculously low price. Its the sheer marketing balls that BlackMagic has to challange Panasonic and Sony in such a cut-throat way. (Canon is so far out of this discussion that we cant even include them) Here is the shocking part. If Sony didnt develop such an incredably advanced STARVIS IMX294 sensor, (or IMX272 ) would we be this excited for this camera? If this camera used a common CMOSIS or Fairchild MFT sensor that topped out at 800 ISO.....would all of these other great features be wasted? Is the image sensor of this camera driving this entire show? Has Sony single-handedly enabled or gifted the "small" Micro 4/3 format with the power to actually compete with large sensor cameras?...(something M4/3 could never do in the past?) Sony Semi Conductor company seems to really have turned the screws on Sony Imaging Company. Sony Imaging is forced to compete against new cameras that are using Sony's best core technology. They are competing against their own patents! This is REALLY a massive industry shift...a true earthquake. We are going to see the shockwaves from this for years and years to come. Once tbe genie is out, its VERY hard to push him back into his bottle!

  21. IMHO the new generation of Sony cameras A7III/A7rIII/A9 are significantly better than their predecessors in every way possible. So I would suggest people keep their mind open and avoid propagating false information unless they have direct experience. That being said, the experience at least when shooting pictures is very different between a DSLR and a mirrorless. I still find the OVF a pleasure to use but only when there is enough light. When things become a bit darker the EVF is far ahead. Tracking should be faster in the 1DXii, but if you shoot prortraits/people then the Eye/Face detect is very useful. The other advantage of any mirrorless is shooting with the LCD which is still clunky with most DSLRs. On the video side, sure the AF of the 1Dxmkii will be better but the newer Sonys are actually very close. The IBIS is the major factor that drove me to mirrorless really. Having the ability to stabilize any lens makes shooting so much more enjoyable as well. I also find the colors of the new Sony cameras very good. To my eye after you play around a bit with the settings they can definitely be better than Olympus/Nikon/Panasonic. If you have the money, I would suggest to rent on for few days. You might like it or hate it and it can save you quite a bit of money in the long run.

  23. 12 minutes is about the same length of time as filming using 35mm cassette on a "proper" movie. It's only wedding videographers who obsess about the video limit. 12 minutes is a long time & ML does an auto restart if necessary so you lose less than a second. I have owned both 5D2s & 5D3s. They feel almost identical in your hands. The build quality of both is exceptional. They will take a lot of punishment. I wouldn't worry too much about reselling a 5D2 in a few years. I doubt that the used price will drop much lower. Shutter count can't be relied on as a measure of how much use the camera has has as if it's been used mostly for video it may well have a very low shutter count.

  24. @Matt Kieley thanks for posting your videos and the three others above, all really good. I never realised video on the EOS M could look this great without using crop mode, shows how useful the h264 bitrate hack is! When shooting raw without crop the amount of moire is extremely bad, and I'd assumed it was exactly the same with h264 video but that's definitely not the case, it's much more usable. I like this one from Ryan Moorman with the 4:3 aspect ratio:

In my experience you can get better results with the cine gammas + the pro/cinema/sgammut3.cine gammuts than the HLG+rec2020. As scotchtape & Robert already mentioned, try playing around a bit and you can make the colors look as you want. After moving from A7rii to A7riii, there is a significant improvement in color even with the same video profile settings. Even the default jpeg profiles look better than they used to. Sony finally started paying attention to color, and they even released the FS5II with better color being the only real improvement. Adobe has also improved their color with Lightroom. I like this direction!

Canon are so incredibly stupid, they could have did this 5 years ago and everyone who had invested in their lenses would have bought into this for eternity! At Canon they have one policy, ie "What's the least we have to do?", because that's what they keep dishing up!! I'm over Canon, they're completely useless and unnecessary now!

    Sony a7 III discussion

Not a fan of Ken Rockwell, but his review has some pretty much in your face shots on his review of the A7 mk III. I guess this is what they look like Color Science wise. https://www.kenrockwell.com/sony/a7-iii.htm I have seen some shots from it that look more Canon looking than a newer Canon! To me the newer Canons are looking more toward Red than the older ones that were a Orange Red. Maybe it is because Canon wants a more punchy look, or maybe they are a bit sharper now even in 1080p. Or well maybe both reasons?

  35. I’ve owned/own several alpha series cameras. My 1DXMK2 is like cheating when it comes to capturing great stills. And for CGing the codec holds together better. But honestly I started only using baked in colors on the Canon. It’s good enough not to have to monkey around with. I don’t consider the Sony alpha series to be in the same league as the Canon. If you want great video in a smaller package, opt for the Panasonic GH5S if using a gimbal or other stabilizing equipment. Nothing I have seen will beat the Canon for straight out of camera results for video and stills.

  37. Based on your interest in full frame Raw, then really it's either the 5d2 or stretch and get the 5d3 if you can find an amazing deal. Obviously, many of us have different priorities, but if that's what's important to you, then it's basically down to those two and seems to be mainly an economic choice. Electronic viewfinders and screens are actually easier to focus with, because you can usually do a pixel-to-pixel magnification and/or focus peaking. Optical viewfinders can be more fun to use, but focusing with an evf is easy, too. Shooting Raw on a Canon camera is not simple. The post workflow isn't bad, though it will take some experimentation. The main problem is that when shooting HD raw, you get like 5 minutes from a 32GB card. Compressed raw and lower bit depths were announced since the last time I used ML, so the situation is a little better now, but it's still very different from shooting all day on a 32GB SD card like you can with H.264. If you go raw for an all-day shoot, you will either need a LOT of cards, or you will need to dump cards to a hard drive as they fill up. Not to dissuade you. Like I said, the image is worth it. But you will need to budget for cards and hard drives. I have a set of Nikkor K lenses that I love. Great character (not terribly sharp, lots of distortion and CA, but wonderful vibrant colors), great handling, they can adapt to anything, easy to declick (if you're into that). Would definitely recommend them for the price.

  39. I respectfully disagree about the video quality being better on the a7iii than the riii. I’ve used both extensively and I agree about the a7iii being maybe one stop better in low light and more detailed in full frame, but there’s something about the image of the riii in full frame that’s simply more pleasing, even if you get the occasional moire and aliasing artifacts. Maybe it’s got something to do with the riii having less rolling shutter or being a tad “softer”, thus resulting in a more organic image. I also feel the build quality and evf (obviously) being a notch above the a7iii. Is the Riii worth the price though? Highly questionable for 99% of potential buyers who are more video oriented. And what about those ghosting artifacts? They are nowhere near as severe in the a7riii due to possibly better nr algorithm. (Read Arturs description).

    Canon XC-M ???

We have discussed this already, but it didn't have a dedicated thread. This seems like an exciting possibility -especially now that Pocket made the hybrid camera, but with the video first in mind (and not the opposite, like all the rest of the hybrids), a reality - a XC-M camera could be the best of both worlds (and more capable taking pictures), and put Canon first in this new - and non existent yet - category of products. XC ergonomics, with M lenses (the 22mm and the 11-22mm are good) and touch focus DPAF would be good news. Still the M has some obvious problems, just a couple interesting options, no pro lenses at all, many kit zooms and only 7 lenses in total, no other competitive M camera existing - so it is difficult to envision a competitive XC when there aren't any M with great features, and how good it can be, and how cheap, when there is no C100mkIII, and the mkII is still a 35Mbps 1080 camera, and the next one, is a 9000euros 15minutes RAW camera (C200). If Canon was someone else, I would be very excited, but now, it could be a very limited camera, with a very high price (2500-3000euros).

  44. 'Upgraded my phone' is a pretty 'odd' expression that we all use. I mean absolutely noone has ever said 'I just bought a new phone and my phone calls now are just so much clearer'. The biggest 'delta' in a new phone these days is the camera. I would guess that Samsung sees itself - not as a company that has 'exited' the camera business - but as the biggest camera manufacturer in the world. I dont think that 'proper cameras' will become 'more niche' they are already outnumbered by smartphones 100:1. Here in Asia I feel there are more 'proper cameras' being bought now, as people get bitten by the 'photo/video' bug and then look for something better. But I dont really have any hard numbers to justify that.

  48. Umm that is a hard NO. Why do you hate BMD so much? The guy that filmed it clearly stated he pulled it out of his RX100 mark V to use. He said it was a very slow SD card but that was all that he had. He actually got an email from BMD to remove his download link because they are releasing test footage very soon and review models have already been sent out. So no, this is just the case of poor sd card and not camera performance. 12-bit is not any more difficult than 10-bit beyond the data rate which isn't camera intensive. Higher frame rates aren't difficult as the GH5, GH5s can easily handle those in a smaller body with limited cooling. Blackmagic has lots of cooling. Switching to a new sensor is not easy and it's not like they can do that very easily. You make it sound like its easy to remove/add features in 5 months before the camera is supposed to release and production needs to begin. The only feature blackmagic has announced that has ever been removed from a camera was the Global shutter feature of the 4.6k sensor. They had it working but it had too many problems. The Turret for the larger URSA is also not likely happening due to the costs and issues with manufacturing it, but it totally does work and there are images released.
