Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

It sounds like you’re threatened by this camera so you’re making sure you point out any and all shortcomings you can. Isn’t sissy a bit emotional ? You’re reaching. Some people will be happy with 10bit 422 as their maximum image quality as long as they have a tilt able screen and autofocus. Most serious image makers know that 12bit raw and 10 bit ProRes for half the price trumps the MILC features you’re desperately trying to remind everyone your precious GH5s has. Mostly because “filmmakers” don’t tend to use those features anyway. I don’t use AF. But I shoot narrative drama. What I need isn’t what others need. For the majority, they will prefer the utility of the form factor, longer battery life, AF and IBIS on the GH5 and will find the bare minimum for serious work 400Mbps codec to be good enough. People who care about image fidelity will likely prefer what a Pocket 2 produces side by side and will also decide that they can work around the shortcomings that pertain to the way they work. The same way others will prefer to work around the shortcomings of a lower bit depth more compressed and sub sampled image because other features are important to them. On board batteries on an Alexa mini on my last show were lasting about 40 mins by the way. I guess you’re calling me a sissy. JB EDIT by the way, I don’t think it’s at all appropriate to use sissy, a word that means effeminate man or homosexual. Maybe you want to change that.7 points -
This is ridiculous guys. Maybe there should be a 'bullshit' thread? Is it a good idea to talk about the projects people hope o have this camera in time for? I'm shooting a film festival in September and really hope I have this in my bag by then.4 points

Hi. Thank you for the words. I only used a Gimbal in Curiosity and it was only for a handful of shots. The orbit around the actor on the bush track and the wide in the water pumping station along with a few shots at the end. Intrigue, the other clip, is entirely hand held aside from a couple of obvious car mount shots (where I forgot to turn IBIS OFF) I have mixed feelings about gimbals and just like IBIS, they’re good in certain situations. I tend to use something like a gimbal for tracking shots rather than relying on IBIS. As I mentioned way back, ibis works best to stabilise hand held shots that aren’t tracking in some way. Which is not the same as locked off shots. Any good operator knows that on a long lens the shot is easier to hold steady if you keep it moving slightly. This can be a gentle rock of changing weight as you operate the shot. By keeping the shot “alive” you’re less likely to notice jitter. With very light and small MILC and dslr style cameras they’re actually harder to hand hold when they have less mass. IBIS helps smooth out the jitter on hand held shots like this that aren’t tracking but you’re also not locked into one position. Depending on the storytelling style you might prefer hand held in a more “natural” style too. After trying gimbals out for a while when they first became available I’ve tended to not really use them except for very particular shots that they’re great at. But for 97% of my work it’s not stabilised by gimbal or IBIS, mostly because I only use these kinds of rigs for shots where I need IBIS. JB3 points -

Thoughts on self distributing DVD's?
Liam and one other reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
If you're an independent artist of any type you gotta hustle. If you can make even $100 bucks selling DVDs that's $100 more bucks than you had before. Doesn't mean though that you don't explore more modern methods of distribution in conjunction. I feel like people are too quick to move on to the latest technology, eager to leave behind old technology before its even dead yet. Physical media still accounts for 15 or so billion dollars in sales last year. Streaming only recently, as in 2016, made more revenue than physical media did. That's pretty remarkable given Apple hasn't updated/supported DVD Studio Pro since 2009 and Adobe hasn't updated/supported Encore since 2012, showing how early they'd given up on physical media. Indeed there are still areas in the country that don't have fast enough internet suitable for high quality video streaming. Other countries are even further behind. I live in a very rural state, Vermont, that has areas where they don't have high speed internet or even high speed wireless. For those areas streaming/downloading isn't feasible. I personally still get Blu-ray copies of movies I really love. Classic horror movies that have limited edition cases mostly. I'll then rip a digital copy for myself that I can watch while traveling, etc.2 points -

kaylee and one other reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
While those people buying DVDs are declining there's still enough of a market, at least in independent professional wrestling where I work in, for them and Blu-ray to still warrant releasing them in my line of work. I think there will always be people that want physical media. Vinyl, cassette tapes, even VHS, have all maintained a consumer base, and in the case of vinyl, have seen that base grow. If my company can still make $400 or more (profit) selling DVDs or Blu-rays at wrestling events then, for me, yeah, it's still worth it and will remain so until it becomes too much work for not enough reward.2 points -

Canon EOS M50 - an accidental 4K Digital Bolex
will d reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
It's 2018 and a good video feature arrives on a Canon EOS! I immediately assume it's an accident, so taunt is Canon holding the leash on performance. The 6D Mark II even managed to step back on quality from the 2012 predecessor which was already dreadful by the standards of 6 years ago. That's no accident! Indeed, what makes the M50 appealing to me is the happy accident of what crop factor you get when you cut an 8 megapixel window out of a 24 megapixel sensor. All the best things are happy accidents when it comes to Canon, who gave us DSLR video by accident, then later RAW video on a 5D Mark III with Magic Lantern by accident, then with the M50's ridiculous crop - a Super 16mm camera! The 8000s are indeed only splash proof as they incorporate a fan for settings at 6300Lumen and higher. 5000, 2000, and 1000 are waterproof. Light and motion started making dive lights so if they say 100 meters then I would believe them. They do have a specific dive model of the light ... back end looks exactly like a Stella Pro. Here is a review of their build quality: Doubt that these would light a large room ... more for interviews and eng closer up ... or lighting a part of a room. This youtube video is on the 555 Kit ... three of the older 5000s: You will find other stella pro information clustered around this video. BH still lists the older 5000K Head light, nonRF here: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1181850-REG/light_motion_850_0335_a_stella_5000_led_light.html 5000K 90 CRI 93 TLCI and the new 5600 replacement head here : https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1327560-REG/light_motion_800_0318_a_stella_pro_5600k_head.html 5600K 92 CRI 93 TLCI There description of the 5000K RF Action Kit with the new head shows older specs similar to the original 5000K light but this is a link to the Light and Motion listing: https://www.lightandmotion.com/choose-your-light/stella-pro/stella-pro-5000-rf 5600K 92 CRI 93 TLCI Reviews of the older lights showed a green spike ... but minor and easily corrected with a custom white balance. Ideally ... all of their lights should have a similar color profile show correction for them would be consistent. Definitely a niche product ... but works for me as it covers small video scenes and all of my still photo needs.1 point

jonpais paraphrased Frank Glencairn, who in spirit (if not literally) wrote that battery whiners were sissies. Did he intend to insult gays? Well, english is not my native language, but to me "sissy" sounds more like "pantywaist". Frank is living in Bavaria, a country that's not famous for diplomacy or political correctness or much respect for "snowflakes".1 point

Shooting with a 4K pocket camera - the exceptional Panasonic LX100
Cinegain reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
See, I feel like the LX100 did pretty well because there was a lot of talk about it for the first year or two of its release, with all the usual suspects releasing glowing reviews of it. There was also pretty frequent videos shot on it all over YouTube. Not saying that it set the world on fire, but it certainly didn't seem like it was released and then immediately lost in the abyss like some cameras were. That we still see videos on it from within the last year is pretty impressive, honestly. If they released a new model with some key updates, especially a mic input, I'd snatch one up in a heartbeat even though I really don't need another camera. I think a lot of people would. It'd serve so many uses for a lot of my stuff.1 point -

It seems like a bit of a cable mess in my opinion. How does tall people feel about shoulderrigs? I often end up feeling like I'm filming from above when I'm using a shoulder rig like that, so I've assembled one where the camera is slightly lower than my shoulder.1 point -

"hey guys...and if these tablets pleasest thou, yay, may thouest not forget to like and subscribe?" Anyway, Liam's a midwest guy, correct? DVD still goes a long way in the fly-over states, especially if you're angling towards anyone GenX or older. The thing you need to keep in mind is that if you're gonna go around and hustle your wares in the flesh, you have GOT to be good at it --and that means enjoying doing that sort of thing. If you don't like it, you're just going to be wasting your time.1 point -

Agree. I remember that I was sold for usability of solo and solo+gimbal possibilities of IBIS after watched two brilliant examples, and after remarkable author encouraged and favored combined usage of both in the second example: "In fact I tested the camera on the gimbal with IS turned off and on and I expected that having it ON would make it worse because they would fight each other....however I found that the camera IS being turned on whilst on the gimbal helped improve the overall feel of the shot and took out a few of the minor jitters."1 point
-
The point is also that not a lot of other people are doing it. And that it's in person. Blurays would be newer but probably actually less likely for everyone to be able to watch it. And with DVDs, there's a case with the cover on it that could get you interested in the film, and it looks like a product. So.. I didn't feel too crazy, sorry. Maybe I WILL go back to 2004.. when people were nicer!!1 point

I know plenty that feel IBIS is almost as good as a gimbal and therefore can be used in place of a dolly for tracking shots. As as opposed to me in a car tracking someone, the example I gave. Thats two different types of tracking shots. And by the way you said “locked off” shots which I didn’t actually say and is not what I’m talking about IBIS being good at. Keep trying. JB1 point -

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
newfoundmass reacted to John Brawley for a topic
I'm not sure what point you're making ? I use many cameras in the course of the work that I do. One of the reasons I CHOOSE to use a camera like the EM1 Mark II is because it has IBIS. I just used it recently on a pilot I was shooting in Chicago for some tracking shots in a vehicle. The small size is perfect and the IBIS works great. Those shots are in the finished pilot and the director loved them. But I wouldn't use IBIS all the time because it's not really a replacement for a dolly move or slider, though a lot of people expect it to be able to do those kinds of shots. Does that clarify your confusion ? JB1 point -
I’ve been playing around some more. I found a better wide angle adapter. It is able to go over the entire lens just enough to cover the lens and be gaff taped onto it. the autofocus works perfect and the new focal length is 14mm. So we now have a 14mm f2 autofocus lens. It’s perfect for vlogging! Also, I found the EVF to be way too small and crappy to use as an actual method for manual focusing. So I pulled out my old BMPCC Z-Finder and it works great! I just gaff taped it to the monitor, but you could probably buy the Zacuto sticky mount for it. (You’d loose the ability to fully close the screen obviously.) Also, I don’t know why but I’m just really enjoying toying around with this camera. I can’t remember when I’ve enjoyed something this much. I had fun like this when I got my BMPCC for the first time, or when I hacked my 5D3 to shoot raw. It’s just plain fun.1 point

jon, when you are working for 12 hours lugging around equipment, shooting handheld at times, believe me, that weight and size is a large drawback. Not everyone has the luxury of filming like you do. I wish it were so but it's not that way.1 point

In case you are using another NLE, I generated a LUT using 3D LUT Creator that does the same conversion: Rec.2020_to_Rec.709.cube I couldn't test it, but it should be fine.1 point -
