  1. FIXED!! ? I just updated the firmware (v1.1) on my GH5s and tested it. Smooth output via HDMI to the Atomos Inferno for DCI 4k at 60fps 10bit 4:2:2. Nice Panasonic. They didn't even take credit for the fix in their firmware documentation. I guess they didn't want to admit to that one, but really Panasonic does work hard at trying to fix issues. Happy customer.

  2. My dear erstwhile member can you please stop attacking John Brawley now. I have long since given up on camera forum arguments so might not be completely up on who is right and who is wrong-evil / killed-a-kitten, but can we tone it down a bit. It's JB! We could be learning so much and having such interesting cameras talks with a film industry guy and I am sure one of the only people with a Blackmagic Pocket 2 prototype yet instead a handful of you are just bitching. It's pointless. Even if you disagree with him on certain matters, hold your tongue a bit for the benefit of the rest of us who are interested in what he has to tell.

  5. All handheld, both him and me are just doing this for fun so we try to make it simple, and thanks! Sure! Had a D750 on a tripod and was shooting with a D850 handheld, we had 3 takes i think, so i set up the D750 with the tripod on 3 different places on each take and did the same with the D850 and used a 35mm 85mm and 105mm, and placed the recorder next to him he only had to turn his guitar a bit away from the recorder so we could have an almost equal volume on voice and guitar sound.

  6. As he said, he’s an old ENG guy, to him the C100 looks like a toy. If you want really small, pick up an SL2, now that thing is tiny. But for the features you’re looking for, if you want to stay with Canon, you may have to go bigger. And honestly, without the top handle, and shooting handheld, I don’t think the C100 would draw any more attention than your XC10. Yeah I would love something like that too. As I said, right now I’m happy with the 5D3, but if Canon were to think out of the box like they did with the C200 and introduce some kick ass video features in this new FF mirrorless or the new cine camera, at a reasonable price point, I would definitely consider it. Hell I don’t even want the 4K, so I should be easy to impress.

  7. No thats not true. RAW just means non-debayered data. There are lossy compressed RAW formats from various manufacturers. The reason you can get more information from RAW than non-RAW even from compressed footage with the same bitrate is because there are less "pixels" to compress when you are dealing with RAW. 1/3rd to be exact. Then you can used the extra bitrate to increase your bitdepth, and in consequence get good tonal precision.

  8. This is the test I did for the 2017 edition of this thread Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 on a full frame (Nikon Df), a crop frame (Nikon D500) and an MFT (Panasonic GX80). Shot at 70mm f2.8 on the crop, 100mm f4.0 on the FF and 70mm f2.8 on 0.7x Speedbooster on the MFT. These images show an identical equivalent depth of dirt on my wall.

  10. Is 8bit HDR or HLG a "joke"? Here is an HDR HLG video shot from the same camera (Sony FS5) using its internal 8bit 420 Slog2 XAVC and Slog2 recorded externally from 14bit RAW to 10bit ProRes HQ (Atomos Shogun). So the 8bit is heavily compressed (100 Mbps), the 10bit is not (950 Mbps!). Totally unfair to the 8bit. But, let's see... Same scenes - for each the first version is from Slog2 ProRes 10bit, the second from XAVC 8bit SLog2 placed on the same timeline. The video was rendered in HLG 10bit DHxNR HQ in Resolve Studio and sent to YouTube. No color correction other than the Resolve presets converting Slog2 to HLG and level adjustments. It is a real HLG video. You can easily tell which is which, since the 10bit source from RAW is 4K DCI and the 8bit source is 4K UHD. The video has plenty of blue sky, ripe for banding. And lots of detail, and high contrast with those pesky white clouds ripe for blowouts. There is a difference. But does it matter? Is it fixable? A laughable joke? If you do not like the test ("the test is a joke," "the test tells me nothing," "YouTube converts to 8bit anyway, so what?"), suggest what you would want to see instead. I can do anything with the original Slog2 clips, including making them available for download. Finally, why do we care about this? ALL Sony mirrorless cameras and camcorders less than $8,000 that have log gammas (Slog2/3) and/or HLG only shoot 4K in 8bit 420 - the RXxxx series, the A7xxx and the A6xxx series, and the FS5. If shooting in log or HLG at 8bit to make 4K HDR videos is a joke, that would call into question what Sony is trying to sell, and what anyone should consider buying (note, the GH5 can only do 10bit 422 in 4K30p, not 4K60p). No Canon cameras/camcorders do 4K 10bit below $8,000 either I think. And they have log gammas. Is this a big deal?

  11. I originally got one of these to use with my RX100 but I've just been having a play with it with the A6500. All I wanted it for really was to replace the ludicrous video record button as I was getting tired of carrying cocktail sticks round with me to operate it with. However, another huge bonus that I didn't realise it could do is that the zoom rocker on it (which I use to control the optical zoom on the RX100) actually operates the Clear Image Zoom function on the A6500 (and the other A series cameras) Being able to power the camera on and off from it as well is also very neat. For £21.99 it's certainly a lot cheaper than the official Sony one that it, erm, 'resembles quite closely' too

  13. I love canon products. If they could deliver even good 4K (10-bit?) (with an option to shoot open gate ) on that FF mirrorless I'd be stoked. It would certainly streamline the equipment I need to carry.

  14. @tweak there aren’t too many ML Raw users around, so I remember the few of us. It’s funny I almost bought a GH5 last summer... actually I did order an open box model but an hour later I looked at footage from my 5D3 and I cancelled the order. A FF Canon mirrorless is very exciting to me as well, especially if you follow the rumor sites. Almost every rumor has stated that it is video oriented... what that means to Canon... But I am really kinda hoping that they will sneak RawLite into it... even if it’s only 1080p, I’d be floored. Between the FF mirrorless and the supposed new cinema line, I am hoping for the best. With all of their faults, I still enjoy the build and form factor of Canon cameras. In the meantime, the M50 seems like it could be a fun camera to toy around with.

Sorry for suggestion, but because I'd say that I have some long and fertile relationship with ideas - maybe it does not have to be strict short... maybe in form of Movie-portrayal-notebook, with every page with different environment and subconscious message. Maybe combining modern and traditional elements in composition.. It is just important that it have some overal and unifying idea behind... Call it, for example, West in the Eastern faces, Gates to the secret spirit or so. Contemplate through faces/eyes and ambience about crossing and intersection of past and today... When finished, propose it to Vietnam government as another view of touristic glimpse instead of postcards and aerial shots. And search for inspiration in movies of Sergei Parajanov... Sorry once again for being free to suggest.

These were the issues When RAW files, which were taken by X-T2 (before firmware ver.4.00), are converted in camera (ver.4.00) or by “FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO”, they are not converted properly. When pressing the shutter button halfway under certain conditions, the live view can flicker. In rare cases, a hang-up can occur. The rollback version has no internal FLOG or the high fps so, put it this way, none of those issues have prompted me to take 4.0 off my camera Its been removed off their site but we have our own copy here !

  20. Fair enough (though the new hybrid AF on that Sony is actually very effective). I don't have an XC10 but my experience with other 1" cameras like RX100 or FZ2000 is that background separation isn't an issue if I have the space to achieve it with a longer focal length but not all situations afford that if you can't control the environment so its never guaranteed. You can always go old school on your XC10 with an old 35mm spinning ground glass adapter but I think we've been there before and it was a bridge (camera) too far when it came to stealth

  21. It's so bad that if I see a vimeo film embedded in a post on any site I just surf past it. It seems completely independent of device, network or even country I'm trying to watch it from. Maybe things will change now that they have bought Livestream who might have some better technology to serve the content to a wide audience. Or maybe they'll just make Livestream as shit

  22. For me it's a case of starting with what is best for the subject matter of the material, and what the film conventions are, and then working back from there with the minimum equipment. I agree with you completely - just because IS means you can get gimbal-like smoothness doesn't mean every shot should be a gimbal shot. I think I use the IS to be able to get the same kind of shots that those with tripods typically tend to do, but just not needing the setup time and hassle. Ie, static shots, pans (if there's a landscape or something larger than fits in the frame), or to follow an object (a person or animal). It's interesting that the C100mkII is smaller, it doesn't look that much smaller unfortunately although it's hard to find a good picture. I guess that what I'm asking for is somewhere between the XC10 and the C100. In terms of adding features, it's more likely to be a reduction from the C100 - a C50 perhaps? - although I'm not convinced that the increased size of the C100 sensor must mean that the camera has to be as large as the C100. The argument that a C100 isn't too large because larger cameras exist is just silly. It's like saying that the truck that is too large to fit in your garage does fit because road trains exist. I'm right there with you!

  24. The XC10/15 and EOS-M need to have a love child - the EOS-MXC using the C200's sensor and the EOS-M lenses. I dig the XC15, but the fixed lens is a deal breaker for me. So is the m50's rolling shutter. Chris

  25. It's hit and miss. A lot of Vimeo embeds on people's portfolios will not play or load super slow. But if I'm on the site or watch my own videos it's fine

  26. The GFX 50s is a fantastic camera for sure, I ended up coupling it with Hasselblad XPAN lenses (ironically made my Fuji) ... they work brilliantly and are extremely compact. BTW I shot this video with the GFX 50s soon after buying it, really love the colours and how the shadows hold up in low light, just a shame the overall video quality is not quite there...

The were complaints raised within my department by those affected directly with the HR departments of the studio I was working for. I leaned about it after the fact. It’s disgusting that you’re still picking a fight here. Move on. JB

  32. Here's some more info, but it's more that I thought these were funny questions to be asking about this camera. And this one answers my thoughts on having 3 audio inputs. It doesn't sound like you can record a stereo track via the 3.5mm socket AND the XLR at the same time. You'll have to choose if you want the left or right channel off the jack. Perhaps you can mix left and right to one single track, but that means you can't really control them independently once its recorded. That said, most of the boxes I'm talking about have input level control anyway. As long as you get it right while recording, this could still be a viable option if you NEED 3 inputs.

  34. On the long run, yes. Your sky doesn't have a very steep gradient, and you don't move your camera. If you see Annihilation on Netflix (practically only watchable in HDR, for the SDR version lets all the highlights clip, unnecessarily) you'll notice a lot of lights with smooth gradients, and moving. Alistair Chapman provided a LUT for the FS7 (and others, the ones that support 10-bit and All-i, see below) to convert Slog3 to HLG, he calls it instant HDR. But he insists that Slog is actually preferable. My own experiences (but others confirm that) are, that Slog3 in 8-bit will make the above situations difficult. The other obstacle has nothing to do with bit depth but with compression. In Slog3, ETTR or not, you will often capture noise, and compressed noise ruins the image for good. Yes, yes, a field recorder. Do I want to use one when it doesn't give me 10-bit? No. The 8-bit HLG-cameras are promoted by avoiding the difficult shots: As far as I can see, there are very few highlights above IRE 100, the SDR version doesn't look dramatically different. Reflections on the waves, the medals on the shelf, sweat on the boxer's skin. I dare say that this clip wouldn't have looked better, or different, had it been in 10-bit ...

  36. when you are working on a Movie you sign a contract and NDA ! and that contrat says there is an embargo on anything going out without premission from the film company - they own everything they paid for it including all my tests - now we live in a world of Facebook and twitter film companies dont want any leaks beore their marketing department decides what people can see and when . So yes I can tell you the results of all my tests right now - just take my word the G7 kicks ass , with a Metabones XL - Nikon Glass and Atomos Ninja Assassin all rigged up on my Gini Rigs cages it s a serious film making tool Now Colour grading is all in my eye - I shoot flat and add the colour in post - alot of my colour is on set I light always with coloured gels and get the look I want in camera - just on a flat profile so I get cleaner blacks with more detail - not crushed out
