  1. Hey Dave, This one is for you. Thanks for the heads up on the M50 ... looks to be a decent B Cam. Found that the Wooden Camera Cage does allow for the external power input and HDMI is accessible ... might be a workaround ... as putting it on the M50 and removing it for the battery would be a major pain. https://vimeo.com/275429037 Password: Daysend Picture profile neutral. And a still for all those worried about highlights.... Again thanks for the information ... Bob

  2. Geoff's not saying that gear doesn't matter, he's saying gear has gone backwards - and "the numbers" being pushed don't correlate to nice images. Bayer sensors interpolate chroma and will never yield colors as accurate and gorgeous as the examples he cites. And if the sensor behind that filter is 4k and up it only looks increasingly crunchy and ugly, nothing like natural optical clarity. He's not advocating against the best tools (in the right hands of course), he's saying the specs being pushed are actually a strike against aesthetics. And he's right.

  4. Which is why they have not been usurped for my day job. But for video, they need to get a move on. In 4K, my D500 has got a bigger crop than an Iowa corn field.

  5. I'm actually selling my rarely used Sony 24-105 after deciding to invest in a C200. If you're in Europe/Germany give me a shout. It's a great lens, but I want to up my game.

  6. I've had the 24-105 for almost 6 months. Where it is particularly good for video is that the 'OIS' of the lens works very well with IBIS for handheld (particularly useful at the long end.) For some reason ibis alone doesnt seem to work as well for video (with Sony). So that is a plus relative to the 24-70 GM (not that I have tried it) which doesnt have OIS. After getting the 24-105 I sold my 24-70 Zony f4 which doesnt really compare.

  7. I quite liked them! They're a lot of fun There are 45 presets in all (not including the speakers/headphones branch)

  8. There is no "clip quite a bit", in digital sound; it clips or not. If you have good sound to start with, you do not usually need compressors/limiters in post. It is good to have good quality limiters for extreme sound gathering. Auto levels are a no-go, dual levels should be sufficient. Limiters in cheap Tascams are very limited, you should set your gain right and conservative. It is not a disaster to add a few dBs later on, but clipping sound is (almost) unusable. Last night I was doing camera for a live performance, the person(producer) setting the recorder set the gain in the sound test (I told him to be conservative, but he didn't listen/knew), when the band really started playing the sound started peaking. Result? Totally unusable sound. The producer just hopes that the band was recording the performance.

  9. It's a cheap one. Zomei. Adds hue to the mix, but whatever, one lives with it. I can shoot outside in the sun at f.95 with it. No hard stops, but that's okay as I'm often adjusting exposure during a shot (when one tries to capture candid doc stuff, the camera just keeps rolling). My issue is the extra layers of glass really does flare alot and it does knock down other details. But that's true on whatever VND you use, or any stacking of glass. Yeah, it's a GH5, for whatever that's worth, with (mostly) a Voightlander 42.5mm. BTW, I too used B+W ND's a lot in the past, and wanted to go that way, but just couldn't get my hands on them fast enough for an upcoming shoot I had last year, so settled for the Zomei.

  10. I shot this with a cheap 21 dollar VND filter at full bore. First try with it but it seems to be pretty good on this video for the money. I used my Sony FE 16-35mm f4 which has a 72mm filter size. I ordered the VND at 82mm. So it covers the wide angle lens with no problem it seems. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06ZZP72D9/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Used a Arri CLog LuT in Resolve 15. No coloring, pretty much OOC and LuT applied. Red is a little Wonky though. I have been experimenting with a +3 expose on the A7s in SLog 2 because of this Long ass tutorial video from wolfcrow LoL. It actually makes sense when you see the video a few times!

  11. It is 4K ... saved as ProResLT and uploaded UHD ... but I was only able to see the 4K once on Vimeo ... all other times it shows as 1080 at best but should be 4K on their site.

  12. The problem you’ve got @kye is that it’s not just the lack of a single camera that covers everything but that all the criteria is actually spread between the different manufacturers. Sony have got the FF and low light, Fuji have got the lenses, Canon have got the AF, Blackmagic have got the RAW, Panasonic have got the IBIS and Nikon have got....to get a move on. Unfortunately, due to many factors, it’s unlikely that any of them are going to become the strongest in all categories in the near future and hence unlikely that a single camera to excel in all areas is going to happen either. Until then it’s just a question of picking the most acceptable compromise today and if you’re changing system, gambling on who is going to get closest over time. Sony probably have the most pieces of the puzzle minus the RAW and if Sigma can make some improvement from Sigma on their AF then they bring better and cheaper lens options so you’d say currently it was Sony that ticked most boxes. An out of focus shot is still going to be out of focus irrespective of whether it’s heavily compressed or RAW so it sounds like that should take precedence for you for what you want to use it for. That would point to Sony being the current best least worst option for you but based on the track record of these companies and how they drip feed functionality, if RAW really is what you’re after, you’d have to take a view on what you think would happen sooner : Blackmagic improving the AF to a good enough level for what you want it for or Sony offering RAW video on any camera outside of their F/FS line? Based on the philosophy of those two companies? Mmmm.... I know one thing though, as many of the things you want to shoot are life events and holidays and family growing up etc, don’t waste the opportunity of capturing those moments while waiting for a manufacturer to come up with a camera that has it all because they are dancing to a different beat. Oh and buy a camcorder

  13. As I say, it's way better than it should be for the price and the pan bar is smart but obviously manage your expectations at that price. But the same could be said for heads at a few times the price of it as well in my experience. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MYPV01O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_0VHjBbW506PVC

  14. Thanks for mentioning those lenses, I hadn't come across them when I went through DPReview and B&H looking for stabilised fast zooms - I'll have to do a bit of research on them @andrgl @SR I know it looks like it's a utopian fantasy, but you'd be surprised. The XC10 and my iPhone8 each have 7 out of the 9 criteria, a 70D / ML / 18-35 combo would have 7 or 8, an A7III / 24-70 looks like it gets 8 and maybe 9 if the overheating isn't too bad, the GH5 gets 8 but misses AF... If Canon has a genuine attempt at good video IQ on their FF mirrorless camera then it might hit all of the criteria. If this list actually looks exhaustive to you then I'd encourage you to write your own list and compare - most people aren't aware of all their criteria.

  15. That monitor really has gotten rave reviews from everyone. The skeptic in me though always hates it when everyone releases reviews around the same time, indicating they all got their free shipment for review at around the same time, ha ha.

  16. You missed out adding the options of 8K resolution, 16 stops dynamic range and a 5-axis stabilizer for half the price of the current BMPCC4K.

  17. Drag and drop film sound design EOSHD Pro Audio is a preset library for Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro X, allowing complete control over camera audio in post. Developed with a professional studio engineer in Berlin, the concept of EOSHD Pro Audio is unique. It is designed to fix common audio issues with internal stereo mics on DSLR and mirrorless cameras in an innovative way, as well as offering cinematic moods for specific scenes and shots – like LUTs for audio. 18. Hey, viral videos are usually filmed on a potato. There's still something to say for 'content is king'... there's gold and diamonds in the ground, might be covered by layers of dirt, rocks and schtuff, but it doesn't mean it's not valuable... opposed to a turd that can't be polished... where no matter how you rub it, it still stinks and there's no layers hiding something of significance. Whatever the case... I got a new ringtone out of it. xD

  19. Bro, like, just check: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicpocketcinemacamera/techspecs/W-CIN-12 or something. So reasons the card you're looking at is a bad match: UDMA 7 and not CFast 2.0 ~ http://www.lexar.com/products/memory-cards/ Card supports 'up to 160MB/s read, 155MB/s write', BMPCC4K needs up to 272MB/s maxed out write (and the '155MB/s' is only a top-out speed, it's not a min. sustained one) ~ http://www.lexar.com/portfolio_page/professional-1066x-compactflash-card/ Lexar = no longer Lexar. A Chinese firm acquired it and lord knows how they run it. Former Lexar execs then founded: https://progradedigital.com Nobody actually has any hands-on experience with the thing. For the original BMPCC they said: So... they might be recommending these: https://www.sandisk.com/home/memory-cards/cfast/extremepro-cfast-2d / https://www.delkindevices.com/products/cfast/

  20. I saw a fridge in a shop a few weeks ago that had a dark glass door on it that when you tapped it became clear and showed you what was inside. We can't be far off someone doing an electronic variable ND in a square filter format if that sort of tech is finding it's way into consumer products. Without the having to tap it to change the setting though obviously.

  22. super 16 size sensor like in the lumix phone cm1, so it has been done before. that combined with with 1.8 lens, and here you go. the lx15, the one inch compact from pana, has a 1.4 to 2.8 lens and is pretty small, like the rx100 series too. so a super16 video smartphone might be possible, just like the cm1 has given us a first idea about.

  24. Nah, a hobbyist would have used a slider, drone, and some sort of other unnecessary tool. This is well shot and very intentionally feels candid and on the fly. Any cuts would also ruin the feel they are going for.

  25. Honestly speaking, I really think you are the one who is 'missing the point' or 'are just simply out of touch'. You should start with the fact that you 'should never ever record sound with internal mics' and at least realize that companies include internal mics because 'people use them'. And when you 'an easy hack'' 'I got a few lengths of aluminium underwater lighting arms for this' you have a strange way of thinking how the majority people are recording video nowadays (and it really has absolutely nothing to do with HOW anyone thinks people to should record video and sound for the best results. Rather like the 'if you want good sound employ a sound engineer' really is missing the point.) The real world nowadays is far more like this.... ... where you cant take a video straight out of camera, that is mostly in focus and use the internal mics (I was actually rather impressed with them - better than on my Panasonic) and easily good enough for my friends. It seems to me your argument is along the lines of answering 'how would you improve the photos from my iphone?' by saying 'buy a DSLR.' Seems to me that 5 years ago 'most people' didnt do video because it required 'manual focusing' 'stabilization' 'editing' 'sound engineers' - some sort of inherent masochism and that people are now 'getting into video' because it is becoming accessible.

  26. It seems like the main message here is "If you learn the real skills of cinematography then the quality of your images will far eclipse all the high tech features, megapixels, and technical specs of the modern digital video age." And it's true - great craft and artistry will win out over tech specs. But I also think this is message overlooks some obvious realities about the nature of amateur and hobbyist videography - that tech specs often do increase image quality at relatively low cost. Sure I could spend many months and even years learning great portrait lighting techniques so I can light a interior people shot really well, or I could buy a 50mm f/1.4 lens, slap it on my high-ISO/low-noise full-frame 4K camera, do a basic rule-of-thirds framing with existing ambient lighting, press the touchscreen focus with face detect and boom, I now have a fairly professional looking shot with creamy bokeh and sharp eyes in focus. So sure it could be a much better image if I go much deeper into learning cinematography, beyond basic and overused techniques like point-of-focus shots. But the shortcuts and some of the tech specs that enable them can be very high bang-for-buck for us hobbyists and amateurs. Even more so if you're a vlogger or hobbyist that shoots run-and-gun or only with natural/available light under uncontrolled situations and you don't have the opportunity to do lighting setups or carefully framed shots. I think Boyle's message is still correct and can even inspire us shortcut-happy hobbyists (I am firmly in this category) to go deeper. But it does miss the point for a huge chunk of the videography audience, since few of us have the time or commitment to achieve the level of artistry he's calling for. Technology has enabled us to generate images that make us and our fans/friends happy, often with an investment that matches our commitment or resources. All of us are trying to maximize our return on investment, whether that's in time, money, or stress/difficulty spent learning a technique or tool, and technology has definitely escalated the return on investment ratio.

    Sony a7 III discussion

The Tamron 28-75mm is really something else. Wide open sharpness at every focus distance and zoom. Almost no CA. Excellent flare control. All in a relatively compact and cheap form. But still, I've decided to return it as I can't really afford it. I have a sigma mc-11, canon 24-85mm f3.5-4.5, 50mm stm and yongnuo 35mm f2 on order. Kind of interested in their performance compared to the Tamron, Sony 50mm Fe f1.8 and Samyang 35mm f2.8.

  28. Auto level *and* a safety track? Seems over the top. I'd stop using auto level. Auto level is bad bad news as it will drive up the noise floor (both of the device and the ambiance) during the quieter spots. Set a conservative gain value for what you think the scene will be, and use the safety track. Paste a screen shot of the audio waveforms, if you're not trusting your ears (and it seems so, otherwise you wouldn't be asking), then use your eyes.

  29. Not a total recommendation as such but Andoer do a compact 5kg load head which you can get on Amazon for £30. Its far better than it has a right to be for that price really (and the elastic band trick smooths it out a lot as it does with all of them) but what I'd really recommend it for is to be able to get the extendable pan bar which closes really small and is perfect for travelling As far as I know, they don't sell the pan bar separately so you can use it on other tripods but they definitely should do !

  30. A7S3 is definitely coming. latest rumors suggest the Venice color science (to match Venice/FS5Mk2 as b-cam), a new BSI sensor reducing RS, even better low-light & faster HFR. 10-bit.. maybe in FHD. highly doubtful in 4k. would love a less compressed codec than the 100mbps XAVC-S. It's going to be an interesting year at Photokina with FF Canikon's hopefully announced!

  31. It depends on your frame of reference. For me, 'can do everything' includes wild-life one second and a wide panorama the next without time to change lenses, and coming from a world that thinks that a 700D is a 'big camera' a 5D or C100 are so absurdly large that people openly stare with mouths agape. Also, I'd like image quality approaching 4K compressed or 1080 RAW. We're in a difficult time - cameras have enough capability and accessibility to give us grand ideas, media consumption is high enough quality that we know nice images when we see them, but the tech isn't quite there yet. I know BM is concentrating on the slow/planned styles of film-making, but they're so insanely good at delivering awesomeness I'm just jealous I'm not in their target camera market!!

  32. @newfoundmass, exactly! And I'm sure I'll get more than three years usage out of a sub $200 monitor, even if worst case scenario it gets downgraded to a secondary monitor.
