Samsung open to new camera system, joins forces with Fujifilm

Samsung has joined forces with Fujifilm to develop sensor technology and says it will apply the new innovation to a large sensor. Could the NX1 finally get a successor? Read the full article3 points -
I decided to test some 48fps with the regular 14bit ML build. I processed it as Alexa LogC 24fps through the MLV App. As suspected... since it’s less than HD... it’s soft, but for short close ups... it could work in a pinch. Any updates on the slow motion capabilities with the experimental 10/12 bit modes?3 points

Yeah, in that instance the C200 didn’t really make sense for your needs. Honestly, I don’t know why anyone would use the C200 unless they were planning on shooting RawLite.2 points

Well, I think it’s safe to say that the 5D3 with ML Raw has close to 12 stops and the BMPCC has close to 13... inconsequential. I’ve never tested both side by side but I trust Squig’s comment with highlight rolloff being better on the 5D. In the end, doesn’t matter much... get the camera that gets you excited and create something with it... there are plenty of others that can argue stops of DR or SNR or SNL...2 points -
I’ll be updating soon. Will shoot some test footage and grade to see how it works out.1 point

I think you are right about the car makers. I do wonder if they would have at least offered it to Leica though unlikely. I do think it is just about them making sensors for anyone and everyone they can flog them too and staying well clear of making cameras themselves now.1 point -

Most likely VW, Mercedes and BMW - combined vehicle sales over 15,000,000 in 2017. Most of their vehicles have at least 1 camera, and higher end models have many more. That's volume the digital camera market will never come close to seeing again - and with increased camera use for auto safety and autonomous driving, its a massive growth industry. As soon as I saw this on Fujirumors, I knew this would start more fake news NX2 chatter. Just like the Exymos presser that started the fake NX2 chatter a few months ago. Perhaps down the line this could benefit Fuji and bring an end to the Sony monopoly in the ILC world, but for now its about mobile and industrial. Also, maybe - just maybe, Fuji will partner with Samsung for better in-cam processors since Samsung is capable of raising the bar beyond everyone else. Chris1 point -

B&H reckon they'll be shipping on September 3rd. That's 5 weeks from now. That's not very far away at all. I would have thought with so little time between now and delivery, BM would know by now if they're going to meet the target date or not. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if they already have warehouses in a few countries full of packed up cameras ready to ship out. Then again, I have no idea of the manufacturing and shipping industries... maybe they'll make and pack them all on the 2nd for next day global delivery. ?1 point

It seems to be ... there are notes that say it will require a firmware update in their specs but this is the first time the Mbps has been mentioned. Time will tell if Matthew Allard is correct with his 2 month old note on the upcoming XF-AVC but I suspect that he will be correct. Would appeal to a much broader base if it had the minimum broadcast standard as a middle codec ... since the C300 Mk III seems to be imminent protecting it is nothing if not classic Canon.1 point -

IronFilm reacted to Trek of Joy for a topic
CIZ is good to about 1.5x on the Sony's I've most recently owned - the a7r2 and s2. Beyond that it gets mushy. I've used it a few times shooting wildlife since my longest lens is the 70-200, so 1.5x in crop mode (300mm) and another 1.5x (450mm) with CIZ. Its like a built-in TC. Put it on a custom function button and you can quickly punch in by tapping a button. Works pretty well, caught a couple lions having domestic issues in Masai Mara. I'm going to move from the 70-200 to the 100-400 soon, so that will give me some serious reach. p.s. Just minutes after this female scolded the male, he walked over to her and they did the nasty. Best 5 seconds of his day. Shot the whole thing in 4k with the a7r2 s35 mode, just need a voiceover from David Attenborough. Cheers Chris1 point -

This is why "full frame" should never have come to mean what is means (representing 135 format). It was one of the greatest marketing tricks pulled off by Canikon to make "full frame" be part of the popular casual lingo. Hell yes Or partner with Nikon.... Just stick that NX1 sensor and processing power into a cinema body! At affordable prices please.1 point -

I would love to see a successor to the NX1, it was a great camera in many ways. But I also remain pessimistic at the prospects of Samsung reentering the premium camera market. My guess is they will sell sensors and also adopt the tech in their smartphones.1 point -
No but I am thinking of divesting my last Leica RF and a couple of lenses, moving from the 5D4 to a dedicated C series camera. I love the Leica but it has seen little light for a couple of months ... and the 5D4 is very good but pales in comparison with the C100II C300II or C200. I have learned that having a lot of money tied up in equipment that I might use if I found the time is unrewarding. So I sold off my medium format gear, most of my full frame rangefinder stuff and this would be the completion of that move. Prefer a camera that I can run with ... without a lot of rigging most of the time. The clips were downloaded from an online posting ... just playing with the raw to see if it is workable. Had a RED One and RED Epic a number of years ago ... loved the RED raw but the cameras entailed to much stuff for me. All I can say is that Arri is out of my price range and no one else comes close to Canon color. So color, light and motion depict reality which is pretty much what a wildlife and landscape photo/video shooter tries to portray ... at least that is my goal. So Canon it is ... for video ... stills ... give me Hasselblad or the newest Nikon 810 850 sensors or the Leica S or SL. C200B is somewhat crippled without the EVF and no LCD ... makes it kinda big with an add-on external screen ... and by the time you add handle and screen you are very close to the C200. Although a small Zacuto Gratical Eye might be workable. I will rent the C200 this week to see if it is as useable as the C100Mk2 I have used in the past. Yes CRL gives you a lot of options ... even with HD ... conversion to Prores HQ and rendering as HD ... with the ability to stabilize and crop if needed ... would cover everything from HD120FPS to 4K 12 bit. As I have not production pressure ... time is not an issue so conversion and rendering is not a drawback. Now just what spec the 160Mbps XF-AVC is will determine how attractive the camera is to many. Assume it is 8 bit but hope they at least give us 4:2:2.1 point

Sony A7S Mark 3 - What to expect
EthanAlexander reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
The Leica T touch screen interface is a breath of fresh air. You instantly see the current settings and tap to change any of them, without tapping a d-pad endlessly through a long list. There's also still a latency to the Sony UI that is completely unacceptable in 2018. As if it is running on a slow processor, or with a lot of background tasks. The bottom line is, Sony should have fired their UX team a long time ago. The HFR mode (esp. on the RX100 M6) is another example of why they should all be fired. The standby mode is unnecessary, first of all, if you are triggering the shot the normal way start/stop on the record button. Also it's not clear enough when you are in standby mode, yet there is text all over the screen and any half brush of a control brings up a prompt telling you to exit standby mode... so you press the key to exit but that just dismisses the prompt... So you think you've existed and start adjusting the zoom, exposure or whatever, and it just comes up with the shitty prompt again, like an endless loop of frustration. That would be a sackable offence at any of the other major companies in their user interface teams. If you look back to the Sony A900 the menus were fine. Simple, logically laid out and clean looking. Maybe they should not have replaced all those Minolta engineers who understood photography, with people from the thermostat division.1 point -
Thanks, 1/120th. Although I’d rarely use it, the biggest missing feature with the 5D3 and ML Raw is 1080p 48 or 60fps... but this kinda works in a pinch... EDIT: sorry... I used 1/96th. I first tried 60p... but it seemed too much for the camera so I dropped it down to 48p... so I shot that with 1/96th.1 point
-
Definitely looks really filmic, re: that compliment you mentioned. ? Which shutter angle/speed?1 point
-
Its almost like the terrible menu system has become part of their brand DNA though isn't it? One of the most elegant menu systems around is from the Leica T and I've grafted it on to this picture of an A7Riii to show how much more simple Sony could make it if they followed that lead. The cameras prior to the A7xIII series that could be hacked through PlayMemories could have custom Android applications put on to them. I know there are a few kicking around that people created to do time lapse and I think a focus stack one but it would be great if it were possible for someone to do a re-skin of the UI to make it look like the Leica T. Because I think Sony are just going to keep coming up with the same interface but even clunkier as they ram more features in.1 point

No, it will be the same across all sensor sizes but the noise levels will vary. Which, in the part of the world that we both currently are, is already currently 1/5000th at f2.8 at ISO100 so we should probably just stop worrying about motion cadence and equivalence and go the beach1 point

10bit vs 8bit HDR (HLG) Shootout Video
Emanuel reacted to interceptor121 for a topic
Link to the technical specifications https://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/436M6VBPAB_00/momentum-4k-hdr-display-with-ambiglow/specifications this is not a grading monitor per se and sells at less than £1,000 The primary issue is the lacknof an SDI input and the fact that the displayport is only 1.2 therefore HDR comes from HDMI 2.0 or USB-C DP alt mode. The latter may be interesting if it gives displayport 1.4 but am not sure If you have a windows computer running HDMI out of graphic card this may be very interesting for mac users need to understand if a thunderbolt 3 to HDMI cable can carry HDR and what is supported1 point -

Funny you say that. I When had my Hasselblad film cameras Everyone, and I mean everyone Only carried 3 lenses. All I ever used for weddings. And they ended up being close to the same mm in FF as you listed. And there has to be millions of shots taken professionally with them, Now we have to have zoom lenses that go to 2000mm LoL. I would imagine Ansel Adams even used on his 8x10 view camera the same 3 lenses mm wise to FF. How times change. But yeah a 95mm, or 105mm would be nice. I always liked 105 in 35mm FF film days. Great Portrait length. With 135mm yo had to be too far away from the model, student. To get good results you have to sort of become one with the subject both physical and mental. Probably can't touch anyone anymore like you did then to get the pose you really wanted.1 point -

San Diego county actually ends about 10 miles from my front door. It's a big county that stretches farther east than people realize; from the ocean to the desert. Yes, there are numerous springs all over the mountains and Desert Bighorn Sheep (aka: "borrego" in Spanish) use them as a water source. The springs also create waterfalls in the canyons. Yes, it snows often at higher elevations numerous times during the winter. We can see it from the valley. White mountains with warm and sunny weather. Not so bad. In the summer I go swimming at the local pool when it's 120° outside. It's surreal. You hop out of the pool and the water evaporates so fast you actually feel like you're freezing...in 120° weather. That last about 30 seconds. I once had to dig a trench in my back yard during an August monsoon to prevent flooding from entering my house. Exciting! DYK, BS is a dark sky community? The mountains shield us from SoCal light pollution. During new moon you can see the Milky Way with your naked eye. Astronomy is a big deal out here. You guys probably can't imagine what's it's like out here right now. Perfectly quiet and gently warm now that the sun is shadowed. Light dappling the distant mountains and few magenta clouds wisp'ing through the sky. I'm sort of hoping that the BSFF will become popular simply as a fun vacation spot for filmmakers in the middle of the winter --for L.A. filmmakers and also for those from more inhospitable climates. I mean, I think we're a neat little fest. You can't really get more unpretentious than what we do. Our winter community is a bunch of earnest cinephiles. We aren't a festival for doing deals and networking per se, but we let filmmakers get their film viewed, always, with a full house and it's just a neat environment. I mean, our "snow birds" come from all over the world during January, so the audience is surprisingly a mixed bunch. Also, we don't pre-program our festival. All submitted films run through the gauntlet of our selection committee. We've only pre-programmed TWO films. And that's only because those films were shot here in town. All other films are rated by our committee and pulled directly from FilmFreeway submissions. It's a very egalitarian process. If a filmmaker submits, they have a good chance getting in. Based on passed years it's essentially a 1 to 5 chance. Basically I'm saying people should submit their films. p.s. "No one really knows" sounds like a Donald Trump quote!1 point -
Crop mode and Clear-image zoom compared... the clear image zoom looks pretty darn good to me. I didn't realise that the zoom goes beyond 1.5x - that means even more flexibility! And now with the A7IV, we can just get a 16mm F1.4 and with crop mode, clear image zoom, and automagical fractal AI interpolation modes, it's a 16-200mm lens!!1 point

Just stumbled across a spec for XF-AVC upgrade on the UK Canon Site .... https://www.canon.co.uk/video-cameras/eos-c200/specifications/ Under video recording times SD card at 160Mbps ... assume it will be 8 bit. I grabbed a clip in RAW and did a 30 second color edit in Resolve .... Love the color and the raw to Prores HQ is fast enough for me.1 point
-
Very unlikely. The whole selling point of the A7S line was video, and having less MP meant larger photo sites and thus better low light performance. If they increased the MP count then they'd either just crop into the sensor (18MP is about 5K for video) or they'd have to downscale, which would add more processor requirement and more heat, which is the LAST thing that camera needs! If they did do that and implemented a thermal solution then they'd have taken a step to turning it into a cinema camera as no doubt they'd use the processors from their cinema line. I suppose they could just output 5K video, leaving people to deal with it in post, but that is so far away from the way the industry works I cannot even imagine it (although it would be a selling point for some, it would blow up YT with other people whose tiny little minds had been shattered!)1 point

This is the exact set up I use on my A7riii - the big advantage is that it is super easy to switch from photo to video and back - it works really well for me. I have it setup so that C1 and C2 'are' in 'video mode'. One disadvantage, as pointed out by another poster on this thread, is that you 'cant' set a 'custom white balance' to work under C1 and C2. Gary Friedman's books on the A7x series are excellent (PDFs about US$30) - I always buy one when I get a new A7 version. They run to over 600 pages!! Although about 300 pages are filler - things like how to use flash with your A7x. They are incredibly comprehensive and a great reference document with good indexing.1 point -

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
Nathan Gabriel reacted to John Brawley for a topic
I think the general rule is about a 20-30% hit (in theory) when using Bayer sensor over true pixel resolution. I think that means the 1920 Bayer is more like 1440, not 720. The first 4K Red ONE was a 4 K sensor, that in theory was really about 3.2K (with an aggressive OLPF) and never measures on an optical resolution chart more than about 2.7K. So it arguably makes 4K RAW files filled with 2.7K resolution images. We can easily test this on a resolution chart with the pcoket, but moire also complicates where you count resolution from. To my mind the resolution hit of only a 1920 bayer is counter balanced by the substantially increased sharpness of no OLPF. I think it's more fair to say that the UN-OLPF'ED pocket mostly presents an image that really truely is 1920 in feel, with occasional moire (or a lot depending on your shooting style) JB1 point -
