Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

No. The sensors in red cameras are sunk too far into the bodies for certain mounts (e-mount being one of them.) And because of the distance the sensor is from the body opening, it's very hard to build a speedbooster. The currently developed abt speedbooster for the RED cameras is ridiculously expensive because every speedbooster is built by hand from one of red's mounts (which are already expensive.) And on top of that, the ABT speedbooster is not a huge sensor size increase like Metabones is, it's much smaller. Imagine a speedbooster on the Raven, which is basically a micro 4/3 EF mount camera. Not possible. RED has promised to stick with the DSMC2 body design for another few years so that will also limit what they can do with their cameras.3 points -

Big fan here, since '14 (discovered through VR). Many just aren't wired for it; if you are, you're lucky (its very grounding, helps me to be productive) @TwoScoops Plenty of great male asmr people too (& there are a small [thankfully] number of both who try to exploit the genre with sexuality, and don't really get asmr themselves). Those interaction videos are the category of role-plays. I'm not a fan of the style myself, but its a technique that apparently works for many (they don't want to replace interaction). Cynicism doesn't come into the picture if you're wired for it. It is a natural human drive to try to explain a thing which does not make sense (to fill in the blank space) Like describing a sixth sense, the five sensers will suspect the sixth sensers of not being altogether there, or morally bankrupt in some way : )2 points

E mount is a major advantage though, as that opens up a wealth of options. (for instance any of the zillions of E mount adapters, or many manual E mount lenses such as the Veydra cinema lenses!) RED Raven's "low" price + a MFT mount might have made it a too compelling option for RED buyers to instead get!2 points

That microphone with 2 ears is hilarious. These tables of mics specifications are also. @IronFilm people will ask you "What's the best polar patter for ear cleaning?" It's crazy. But I would like to know if someone else can experience that brain tickling. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_sensory_meridian_response2 points

If you are looking for a reasonably low cost way of getting into recording ASMR then the Roland CS10-EM combined binaural microphone/headphones is a decent option. They are around £80 and are also ideal for recording general atmos for your regular films too. As you wear them like headphones, they are pretty stealthy and of course as they actually are headphones then you get to monitor the audio as well into the bargain. If you have a look on YouTube there are a lot of ASMR videos recorder with them.2 points

The Red Raven is a micro 4/3 camera in 16x9 mode so it would be so much easier if it was a true Micro 4/3 mount, but that's likely not possible because the sensor is too far into the body. Sticking with the DSMC2 design limits them with certain features they can/cannot add as well as cooling. Blackmagic is much more flexible in building cameras that match the sensors. RED probably gave the full 4.5K due to competition from the ursa mini 4.6K.2 points -

What's interesting is Kinefinity fixed a lot of issues that RED has with their cameras. From the beginning they always designed a shallow sensor so that you can mount many different lens options. On top of that, their sensors can be speedboosted easily. I'm 100% for a collaboration with Olympus to build a model with IBIS and Autofocus. They are ahead of the game in those areas for micro 4/3. If blackmagic built a camera with a sony sensor (like mavo 6k, DJI, etc.), shrunk the size down, kept the same color science, and added autofocus, it would be a slam dunk against cameras like the c200 because of no market segmentation and professional features like prores. I mention a sony sensor because it will have higher iso performance and lesser cooling requirements, leading to a smaller camera. Blackmagic is the only brand building cameras without market segmentation and including every feature they can. If they just add a few things to their cameras and shrink the size a bit, they can cause a huge shift in the industry as a lot of other camera manufacturers will lose sales.2 points -
As someone less than politely pointed out on the other thread, I appear to have been a bit of a lazy arse in the almost 12 months since I tripped over and found the Cinelike d thing. You may recall it happened because I was researching making a hardware controller and after several iterations, here it finally is. And yes, it does look rather like a calculator doesn't it? The different iterations (including an Android app at one point!) have been in pursuit of making something small, standalone, self powered, fast connecting, push buttons and with an integrated screen at a lowish cost and, well, here we are. Here is the finished spec and features : Compatible with all Panasonic Lumix cameras that can be controlled by wifi Integrated USB rechargeable battery Full colour screen 20 keys with 3 bank switch keys giving 60 direct switch operations of functions Control of Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, White Balance, Colour Profile, Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness and Noise Reduction. Automatic unlocking of Cinelike D and Cinelike V on GX80/85, LX10/15 and TZ10 Control of manual focus in fine and coarse steps Control of One Shot AF Control of Record Stop/Start Store and Recall 8 focus points 4 selectable transition speeds between focus points Store and Recall 8 setup presets (each consisting of Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, White Balance, Colour Profile, Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness and Noise Reduction) Presets are stored in non-volatile memory so are available in any session. Boot time to camera connection and control under 2 seconds. Wifi control range tested to 20m. Optional accessories : Interface module to support Nintendo Nunchuck controller for manual focus control (native lenses and adapted lenses with smart adapters) and zoom (integrated lens cameras and power zoom lenses only) Wireless interface module to sync remote record and stop on supported Tascam, Zoom and SoundDevices audio recorders. The controller fits a regular cheap cellphone to threaded adapter holder so as well as being used handheld it can be mounted to anything you have a need for with the right attachment so could be on a cage or a gimbal or whatever. I'm going to be doing some more testing of it in anger in the next couple of weeks and I'll put up a video of it in action then. So, I have been a bit less lazy than first imagined By the by, the controller has both wifi and bluetooth so it begs the question would anyone be interested in a version of it for the Pocket 4K ??1 point

Have you noticed the proliferation of asmr videos on youtube? They have awakened sensations that I had not experienced since my youth. A pleasant tingling in the head. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but apparently we are many people. The importance of these videos lies in the sounds and the quality of the audio. For me the best ones are those of crafts and not those of doctors or whispers. What do you think?1 point

Ahh... anamorphic... that makes sense. In reality, I’m fairly happy with my Canon lenses shooting 1080... or 820 in 2:39... so for now that should suffice. I don’t think I’m quite ready for anamorphic. However, I do need to move to a newer build and mess around with some of the advancements. I’m still using the the messed up build from April of 2017. I never had the issues others had with it, but I still should get rid of it... Stupid question... when I update a build, do I just load a new build onto an SD card and then run the firmware update? Or do I have to bring it back to the regular Canon firmware and then do it? Btw, is the Iscorama a newer addition to your arsenal? And are you using a focus module or doing double focus? I am tempted to pick up a Sankor or something and try some anamorphic...1 point

Red has been building cameras for going on almost 20 years now. I know, I had the original Red One on order for over a year. It is easy to look back and say, Oh they should have done that, they should have done this. The Red One was a groundbreaking camera that has bought about a lot more groundbreaking cameras that we can actually afford to buy. Your beloved Kinefinity is one of the spinoffs thanks to Red. Kinefinity has been making cameras for 5 years, 2013, and they have made great strides no doubt in that time. I am not a big fan of Any camera manufacturer anymore. My days of buying, renting, using high end stuff for a living, hobby are over. I am retired so probably this new 4K BMPCC is as high price as I can really justify to go with the money I make now. But I don't think even though it doesn't cost too much is detracting from it's ability to probably hold it's own cameras 5 times it's price. So why pay more for what I do and need. Probably true for lot more people than me. ☺️1 point -

Just to be clear, the E mount option on Kinefininty is a DUMB mount as far as I know. No Iris control etc. You can't actually use native E mount lenses on there, but it's an intermediate mount for adapting to many others. Just like the MFT version of the BMCC that BMD did. DUMB MFT mount as a way to adapting to other mounts. MFT offers the same "open" flexibility of a short FFD too and adapts to pretty much anything that E can adapt to. And on this camera it's a native MFT mount too with all the options ? JB1 point -
This phenomenon is used by advertisers for a long time already. Ads of perfumes, cars and ice cream use these techniques. @SageOne thing I've noticed is that as if it were an auditory drug, the more videos you see, the harder it is to get the answer each time. There is a habituation and immunization, so I try to see only a few of them from time to time. Other people with insomnia problems use it to fall asleep .1 point

I personally don't see the big deal with IBIS in a camera like the Pocket 4K especially with all the hand-held gimbals on the market. Every lens and camera becomes stabilised with a gimbal and with the price of the Pocket 4K, you should be able to afford a good gimbal if you need stabilised shots. Sure, a gimbal is a little more cumbersome than IBIS but gimbals work much much better than ANY stabilised sensor. And if you are buying the Pocket4k, you are most likely shooting RAW or ProRes (pro formats) so you should be chasing pro results that a gimbal can give you and IBIS can't. If you are a hobbyist and just shoot handheld with no rigging , the pocket4k is overkill (even for the price) or get a stabilised lens but a Mirrorless or DSLR with IBIS might be a better option for you. Despite the price, this is a cinema camera and how many cinema cameras have IBIS? I'm not willing to pay for it or deal with its setbacks even when disabled.1 point

@mercer the MLV Lite module is nearly able to do all the things the regular raw module does (including sound recording), and it uses less processing power, so I think there's a discussion going on about getting rid of the regular raw module and making MLV Lite the standard one. There isn't much difference between the two modules in terms of what they're like to use. The EOS M is only worth using in crop mode, and the current resolution options means it's not great at all for anamorphic filming. The max available resolution till very recently was 2520x1080 (2.33:1 aspect ratio). At this resolution recording is continuous at 10 bit lossless, and nearly continuous at 12 bit lossless. Crop is 3.33x from full frame (which will be 2.36x crop with the upcoming speed booster). Now it's also possible to shoot up to 2520x1384 (16:9) at 24fps. However when you increase the vertical resolution beyond 1080, the lowest bitrate setting you can select is 14 bit lossless, which limits record times to about 2 seconds only! However, as I'm sure you know with Magic Lantern you can select any resolution lower than the maximum and any aspect ratio you like, to get better record times. For example, with 2224x1200 in 14 bit lossless I currently get 10-15 seconds record time. The exciting news is that the SD card overclock hack is being developed even further to increase the clock frequency from 160mhz up to the UHS-I maximum of 208mhz. When (and if) that happens then 80mb/s write speed should be possible on the EOS M and other digic 5 cameras (as opposed to 55mb/s write speed that the current hack allows). This should enable continuous recording at 2520x1384.1 point

I try not to subscribe to political movements or social media prescribed causes created by political operatives to use the masses’ need to be heard on their 15 minute soapbox. It’s amazing how alone we are when we have the world at our fingertips. And these people of power exploit that loneliness and that need to be heard. So, for me, if a cause begins with a hashtag or ends with a gate... I shrug my shoulders and root for the pawns... But I digress... You’re right, this site is about tech and craft. For me it’s about learning from more talented people than myself on how to get a modicum of beauty in my images... but I’m just a hobbyist with narrative dreams. But like you once wrote, “art is politics” so in a community where relationships are forged by artists and craftsman, it is only natural for conversations to evolve from the passion of creation. So what is Jon Pais’ story? What is mine? Or yours? We all hide behind a moniker and an avatar as we anonymously hang our creative laundry for professionals and amateurs to critique. With every screengrab or video we share, we also share a vulnerability and unfortunately some people piss all over that. There are some nasty fuckers on this site. So I guess the question is... is Jon one of them... In the end, I don’t really care what some older American living abroad thinks. As I’m sure others don’t care what a 43 year old guy from South Jersey thinks but I must admit, as a storyteller, I do enjoy the drama. So carry on.1 point

At NAB I was checking out the Atlas Lens Co lenses... which cost $8k-$9k. While that’s pretty affordable when compared to other anamorphic primes, they are nonetheless priced beyond the reach of most would be filmmakers budgets. Whilst at the booth I ran into someone who was also considering picking up a set of the Atlas primes. We had a conversation during the coarse of which he advised holding off from buying the Atlas Lenses, as he had it on good authority that new players were entering the market and that 2018 is slated to be the year that anamorphics become affordable. Atlas lens was not the “new” manufacturers I was talking about. That video was about Atlas lens, but Altas Lens was not the “new” manufacturers I was talking about in the video when I said, “you may want to hold off from buying the Atlas Orions for now as more manufacturers are entering the anamorphic market and 2018 is slated to be the year anamorphics get affordable”. 1.56 into the video...1 point

I disagree with your conclusions. I think this mostly about mobile phones and perhaps some B2B chip solution. Most likely Samsung Galaxy S10 or S11 will have a class-leading colors and in return Samsung might become a secondary chip supplier to Fuji to help Fuji differentiate vs. Sony 6500-6700, etc. Anything beyond that is just dreaming. You underestimate what it will take for a business to return back to a failed venture that they have closed-down once. NX2 that mostly appeals to DSLR filmmakers is a niche market for Samsung. It just makes no sense. There is no money in it. Samsung wants to compete against Sony in the chip market. Even though it's going to be very competitive against Sony, is still less complicated than building an entire support structure around the world to support Samsung cameras, lenses, etc.1 point

How do you measure stops on a "backyard" test ? Again the only meaningful way to measure in my view is to shoot side by side in the same situation. Then you can say categorically one is better than the other. Like when I comapred an Alexa to an Ursa Mini 4.6K here https://johnbrawley.wordpress.com/2016/03/23/ursa-mini-4-6-and-alexa-side-by-side/ I think all camera manufacturer claims are kind of meaningless. They're almost ALWAYS derived by calculating a theoretical dynamic range from the sensor SNR and not from actually photographing anything. They don't sit their with charts in a lab. The do it with maths from a spec sheet. Arri are the only company that have actively UNDERSTATED their claims of DR. Most accept that an Alexa is a stop and half better than what Arri claim. Arri also make their own DR chart which I've never seen anyone use publicly.. https://www.arri.com/arriajax?mod=productList&product=263 The actual photographable DR is pretty much impossible to measure anyway because none of us can agree on how much noise is too much. What you think is acceptable I may not. So who is right ? Noise is subjective. Everyone feels differently about how much is acceptable. That's why oyu can post a picture of a 20 wedge chart and say hey it's got 20 stops ! And by the way that article trying to make use of the word "latitude" is also highly subjective. It's some individual person's SUBJECTIVE view about what's USEABLE DR. So what is useable DR ? What does that mean in a SCIENTIFIC repeatable way ? Latitude is another meaningless phrase like "useable dynamic range" What does useable mean to that one individual ? In what scenarios does that change ? Low light / low contrast over daylight high contrast ? The only time I see the phrase "useable dynamic range" being useful is when you're in log encoded video and you're trying top re-position a tone that's been recorded near clipping and when you try that it can look pallid and weak. So you have a skin tone that isn't technically clipped but when you put it from 90% and put it at 30% it looks crappy and weird. This is not a limitation of dynamic range per se, but the shortcoming of LOG encoding video curve being used and assigning less "bits" to that part of the curve. It's a form of compression. Arri do 16 bit linear-->12 bit log at RAW. So do Blackmagic when shooting DNG. Sony RAW is also 16 bit LIN @ 3:1 (on an F55 anyway) JB1 point -

Amazing job! Does it have a name? Some of these devices have raised serious startup cash on Kickstarter - given the shitty camera control apps (Fuji, Sony), there's definitely a market for your widget. If you can figure out time-lapse and focus bracketing, you have a potential customer with every a9, a7r3 and a73 body sold. If it can trigger 4k recording, it'll make Fuji users heads explode.
