  1. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K ‘Models Walking in Daylight’ John Brawley talks about the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K for the first time. ‘Models Walking in Daylight’ is his first camera test where he checked out the camera’s ability to handle different skin tones. “The whole point to this daylight test was to see how the camera handled skin tones. We were shooting these scenes later in the afternoon, so I was at ISO1000 or 1250, so it was at the lower ISO for this camera. I understand this gives more in dynamic range, so you have a little bit more highlight-headroom there. When I look at those shots now, I am really impressed at how good the dynamic range is. It is great to see all of that detail I was seeing was actually captured in those shots.” “I don’t think people realize how easy it is to make things look cinematic with Micro Four Thirds! I know that there are a lot of people who like that 35mm full frame look, but it’s still very easy to get images with an out of focus background with the Micro Four Thirds sensor. I found it a great 4K sensor and really good compromise for a small camera that still gets really, really good looking pictures.” Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

  2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAbB4dQOz4I Mark Wyatt talks about using the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. ‘Nature’ is Mark’s test of the camera’s 4K performance in the extreme lighting conditions of rainforests and ravines. “The camera tests I wanted to do were in the forests and waterfalls on the outer West Coast of Canada. I was really interested in seeing how the new sensor would handle these harsh lighting conditions. By increasing the ISO to an impressive 1250 and 2500, it allowed me to capture the dark moss-lined walls and unique emerald color, yet also hold onto the highlight detail of the top of the waterfall and sky. I feel most cameras would likely struggle with this scene.” “I had the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K for only a few days, but overall I was really impressed by it. The weight of the camera is very liberating, especially when you are used to using larger camera systems. The screen is big and bright enough to use in daylight, which I found great for judging focus and exposure. And, the colors too on the screen, were also nicely represented. In fact, I would argue it is Blackmagic’s best screen yet.” Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K RAW ISO400, 1250 and 2500 Sigma 18-35mm, Rokinon Cine 50mm EF lenses Metabones Speedbooster to Micro Four Thirds

  3. I'm not particularly fond of this shot, but in that lighting condition this is basically a silhouette shot. Why would you need shadow detail at that level of exposure? If black was pulled down more it would pop a lot more. The shot looks like it could be exposed another two or three stops lower. There doesn't need to be shadow detail when you're shooting directly into the sun. This is exposing wrong for that type of shot. I attached a still I shot with the OG pocket last week. If you're shooting a light source like that, black can be black.

  5. I saw this at B&Hphoto today and it pretty much sums up why Canon will dominate in mirrorless.... You see it lists the top 3 'best sellers' in FE lenses. Never mind that the 28-75 2.8 is supposed to be plasticky, the 50 1.8 is supposed to be horrible and the 85 1.8 isnt supposed to have great bokeh. At the end of the day consumers 'buy value/cheap'. The same applies to APSC where Fuji offers the 'quality/expensive product' but where its market share is so low nobody actually knows what it is. While Canon with minimal efforts is making great inroads. Fuji is releasing an 'amazing' US$6,000 200mm F2' while Canon doesnt sell an EOS-M lens over US$500. Look there is always a market for high end, ground breaking, mtf chart lenses which are inevitably very expensive - but it just isnt a very big one. All the mirrorless manufacturers are going relentlessly upmarket leaving a large gaping hole for Canon to walk through. You see the great achievement of Nikon and Sony in FF mirrorless is to create fabulous high tech FF mirrorless at 'relatively affordable' price of under US$2,000. But it is a complete waste of time if even the most basic of your lenses are over US$500 a pop. Sure Sony has now 'eventually' got a few affordable lenses but there simply arent many (especially compared to Canon and Nikon DSLRs.) Both Sony and Nikon are absorbed with huge amounts of hubris - Nikon bringing out a US$6,000 58 0.95 with manual focus (before a basic long zoom) and Sony is promoting its lightweight, 3kg, US$12,000 400 2.8..... So in all likelihood Canon will enter the FF mirrorless market with a totally underwhelming camera, with lenses that are uninspiring (but you wont have to have to make the excuse they look good value against Leica.) And much to everyone's irritation but no surprise they will walk away with the market

    GH5 for Photography?

Yeah I took this with my Panny G7 using the 14-45mm kit lens hand held. It is straight OOC.That is the very first kit lens Panasonic ever made and I think they are actually the best one they ever made. For the money a Panny G7 is just too good to pass up. I know it doesn't have IBIS, but for less than 400 bucks at times what is really better. And it does 4K.

I think it is more that they can HAVE faster lenses with the Z mount and why they have not had many 1.2 or faster lenses to date with the F mount. Something about it being easier to design wider lenses as well. That said, I still think it funny that people are now saying it is an advantage to Nikon over other mounts to have a wider mount at 55mm and yet nobody has ever listed the F mount (44mm) as being a disadvantage compared to the E mount (46.1mm) and especially the Canon EF mount which at 54mm is only one mm less than the new Z mount.

  16. PhotoMatch is an app, which can auto-create LUT by a given image, and in development right now is an image-adjustments module, with custom algorithms. I'm looking for some feedback from you. Do you like the image-adjustment algorithms better than the standard ones, used in just about any other software? What do you think about the color-matching option? You can run the app through just about any modern browser: https://kinoseed.com/ Here are some examples of what it does: Here's example of "temperature change" algorithm: Color-match algorithm:

  17. https://www.canonrumors.com/we-were-wrong-all-of-your-canon-mirrorless-dreams-are-likely-coming-true-soon/ Well 28mpx FF sensor and 4K for 1900$. Sounds like Nikon Z6 with better AF is here. Prepare your laugh though... let’s see the codec, bitrate and crop. If good codec + no crop it will be an interesting alternative. 4K30p is so boring though and no FHD 120p Still waiting for a 4K60p FF that is not 6000$ and 1.5kg....

It is easy to understand why, many like me have been waiting for a hybrid camera to at least complement our existing Nikon cameras and lens. Video will be in big use on this camera and many pro might not use it as their primary camera , but secondary in the shoulder pack, so the second card slot issue won't be that bad even for critical work.

Pretty cool the Z7 & Z6 are made in Japan at the historical Sendai factory. Currently only D5, DF & F6 are still made there. All other Nikon cameras are made in Thailand/China. D850 production/supply shortage hasn't got anything to do with it. The thirst is real!

  20. It is disappointing for sure. Actually, they have changed/add a thing or two, and the price is equal, or less to the Chinese product, so they did alright there, but they promised the app as well. Right now I can't use it at all, and I am not interested on any other use. I just hope a 3rd party app will show up and save the day!

  21. Well I am not too sure how much data even a modern Sensor can pull out of the shadows like that grab is? You have to admit there is detail, probably a lot more than a Black Hole like most cameras before it would have. I guess we will have to see. But I hope you are not expecting a a RED Monstro 8K VV with 17+ claimed stops of dynamic range for 1299 bucks LoL.

More M mount stuff with the rather cosmetically battered but still optically very much not battered Leica 90mm f2 that I picked up recently. Stills again for now but I'll definitely do some grabs of it and the other M mounts I've picked up on a the A6500 and X-T2 in a few days.

  25. Very good video. Cannot believe the difference between FCPX and the competition. Wether it is exporting or stabilizing etc it is just so much faster. Also I was personally very happy to make the switch from Premiere. FCPX make editing much more pleasant to me in general on top of the speed advantage.

  26. Crop may remain a problem for Canon. Sony have fixed this issue for everyone else (Panasonic, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Fuji) but Canon go it alone with their sensors. Bitrate and codec are for the most part fixed with Digic 8 as shown on the M50 with the 150Mbps 4K (which is quite nice). It would be nice to finally have a product with both the compressed MPEG4 AND the MJPEG. Disappointing. Still nothing in the Canon camp for that. Plus that 1.5kg is really only APS-H for 4K60. Sony A7S III maybe? Doesn't seem a world away from the Z6. That's what I thought the other day, but not at $1900. I also don't think we'll see IBIS on the M5 II. Yep, seriously doubt it. Bet you I still prefer the Canon images though. I don't think Canon could care less what Nikon is doing. True. They have publicly stated though that video is much more important to them now. Uhm, well if this product launches in two weeks I would say Sony are exactly why they are doing it. You can't seriously believe the Z6/Z7 announced days ago had anything at all to do with it? Nikon AND Canon are developing these products because they are threatened by Sony (although all the fanboy sites will try and tell you that Sony was never a threat at all, so I wonder why they are cloning their 'losing' product strategy). C-log is not a given. Decent codec will be 100%. C-log is something they have reserved heavily in their DSLR market, with only the 1DC and 5D IV (begrudgingly, later) getting the C-log treatment. Yep, yep and yep. No Canon users are thinking of switching. And no, before anyone rants at me, I don't think this will be significantly improved 'ergonomics' over the Sony mirrorless cameras. Just as I don't think Nikon extracted any miracles out of a unicorn anus. That is unless it is a Canon DSLR body with an EVF and no mirror, which is possibly a thing... a very weird and pointless thing.

There was some speculation about it due to what I believe was a misunderstanding about the Fresnel element in some newer Nikon lenses such as the 300 f4 PF and the 500 f5.6 PF making it into z mount lenses. The Fresnel element enables a lens to be much smaller so the 300 f4 PF has a much smaller footprint than it's predecessor and is more the size you would expect of a 300 f5.6 for example. This was wrongly interpreted in my view as people thinking it made a lens faster (ie an f5.6 is then equivalent to an f4) but it is related to physical size allowing faster lenses to be smaller. I think the reason they all got so excited was that the presumption would be that the 24-70mm f4 Z mount launch lens would act like an f2.8 if it had a Fresnel element in it.

  29. As Yurolov already mentioned, I think that some shots show so capable DR, which is, of course, expected... Reason why I'm waiting BMP4k'raw (before, say, GH5s) is even greater possibility to conceal/correct critical WB and exposing mistakes I made in so often uncontrolled situation... What is rest for best wish is - better build quality and longer life period without issues than original BMPCC... area where Panasonic is, with Canon 5d's, what I found from experience, so annoyingly superior in prosumer/consumer market (it is incredible that I still find GH1 and 5D II in great condition after very hard usage treatment.)

I cannot be bothered to look for any statistics, but I doubt Nikon or anyone else for that matter lost any sales, because they didn't sell f1.2 or f0.95 AF lenses. These are such niche products, it's ridicules. DOF is simply to shallow to be used often and f1.4 is very comparable.

  31. If 4K has DPAF and no crop, this thing will destroy Sony/Nikon sales, no doubt. And because it is Canon, 3rd party lens producers will all speed up development of lenses for it. We all know Canon can do it (though the mount is still a mystery), but hasn't done it so far, because they are very careful at cannibalizing their existing models.

  39. I think what I’m seeing is a similarity in the highlight roll off, not necessarily a DR similarity with the GH5. With that being said, I enjoyed your impromptu family short film. The Ursa Footage is in a different category than the P4K, as it should be, but I definitely think this is some quality first footage for the P4K. That midday sun, in the middle of the woods is a bitch on almost any sensor.

Just got my II-Pro today. WOAH!,...the image quality is LIGHT YEARS ahead of the old Mavic Pro. Noise processing is fantastic. Shadows are clean and not washed out. No 15 frame temporal NR pulsing. If you add +1 on sharpness, noise reduction backs off even more. This camera looks VERY detailed on both FOV and HQ crop modes. Even better news....the stability of this aircraft and it's ability to perform flawless yaw movements is like none other that I have flown. I have flown, Mavic Pro, Mavic Air, Phantom 4 Pro, Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 and Inspire 2. This one is THE winner and is absolutely buttery smooooooth. Woah! It's clear to me now that you can't judge any detail of this camera on YouTube. You have to download actual card files to really see this thing. Will include some downloadable clips tonight. Waiting on my Zoom arrival tomorrow. CT

  42. Actually yeah it's more likely BMD adopt ProRes Raw internally then do anything with Atomos.. then again a big part of their marketing is selling you Raw + Resolve and ProResRAW/FCPX could cannibalize that..

  43. The Nikon Z system is the shortest flange in the industry, so you could adapt everything except perhaps the Sony ones. The difference is that it will have full functionality on a ton of Nikon and most third party fmount lens (the sigma art worked from fronos photo video). I think you will have third party adapter coming with at least screw mount motor for older nikon lens without motor. This will already get you more than 300 hundred (Just Nikon without counting other third party like Tamron, Sigma) lens. Sorry it was another video where they talk about S lens etc
    1 point
  44. You guys aren't paying attention to the S line lenses, from what I have seen they render aberration free from edge to edge with an extreme creamy rendering without being too contrasty, until now you had to buy cine zeiss master primes for that, now you can have it for 900$. No wonder they made the flange distance so short, you can only use them on their bodies.

Although, I definitely agree that The Lane looks really good, I’m not sure that it bests the best ML videos. There is a natural texture and depth to ML Raw, especially in regards to skin, that is unmatched in my opinion. With that being said, there are features in the GH5 that make shooting a blast. And with Sage’s work, a lot of my previous issues with the GH5 are cured. So for certain projects, it could prove useful. Please post your results if you pick up Sage’s LUTS. Actually, I have no special admiration for the GH5 (more actually I have admiration just for some people and their works), instead, I hate all camera manufacturers equally because their products are so pricey for my pocket and unfortunately I can't quickly and easy change systems, not to mention to have two simultaneously But I admire fanatics as Sage, firstly because I recognize part of myself in his dedication and secondly because I find this last version of GHa shockingly good... Yes, I predict that GH5 will be in your future... above, just posted, clip The Lane looks, I think, incredibly similar to some of the best Canon ML results that I saw...
