Why the camera press need to grow a pair of balls

Publish and be damned? In the run up to IBC, I was put on mailing lists by PR agencies against my will, working for various camera-related brands. I received invite after invite to meet, to talk, to build bridges and make friends. Meanwhile DJI was spamming my forum via a fake user, advertising the Mavic 2. Read the full article6 points -

Jesus Christ, you people are such nerds. There are so many cameras available on the market, just pick your poison and CREATE SOMETHING! This endless droning about this company or camera being better than that company or camera is pointless. You don’t like the 4K crop in the EOS-R, then shoot 1080p or buy a Z6 or an a7iii... it’s quite simple. I’m not thrilled with the crop but the camera has a lot of other perks that make it a contender for me as a hybrid. I look at any 4K video option, cropped or not, as icing on the cake. I’ll rarely shoot 4K and when I do, I’ll have more compact lens options with a thick codec. I’ll have the definitive best AF in the industry. And I’ll have great focus aids for my manual lenses. Any and all lenses I have that are native EF, or adapted to EF, will have a built in ND in the adapter. I’ll have internal Canon Log for 1080p and 4K and 10bit for external 4K. I’ll have an articulating screen and what seems to be excellent ergonomics. For me, this camera can be very useful. But so could the Z6. Or a GH5. Or an X-T3. So instead of spending your days bashing other brands to justify your purchases, why not go out into the world with your camera of choice and shoot something. I swear you’ll forget all about your problems with the EOS-R.5 points -

Nikon Z7 has it for breakfast. About the only improvement over the 5D Mark IV seems to be substituting MJPEG for H.264. Not that it was overdue or anything! https://www.eoshd.com/2018/09/here-are-the-official-video-specs-of-the-canon-eos-r-full-frame-mirrorless/ About only thing I can hope for is that the 4K is somehow full frame and not a crop but I honestly just think it is a 5D Mark IV in a mirrorless body, looking at the specs sheet, rather than anything really new.3 points -

Posted before but it needs some kind of sticky!! If you want a native 50mm - $2299 + TAX or £2350 in UK WHAT? The 28-70mm F2 which is useless in video mode... $3K!! That is $5.3k gone on lenses, before you've even factored in the body. Are the EOS R fans out there seriously considering investing $7.6K straight off the bat just to get shooting? I am wondering why so few are talking about this... Surely, you want the native lenses. You don't want to be stuck with adapters. That's something Sony users do, not Canon users! You want the silent autofocus. Dual Pixel AF gets very noisy shooting video with EF lenses. Whether you love the EOS R or not, don't care about video and only plan to shoot stills...these prices are eye-watering. So what are people gonna do... stop at a 24-105? I don't think so. EF lenses are apparently a must-have prerequisite for owning an EOS R! So is the adapter... but the adapter you want - variable ND drop in - is not even available yet. Why does it take until February to get such a simple thing out of the factory? And what if you are a Sony, Panasonic, Fuji or Nikon user considering a switch to the EOS R and you have no EF lenses? You will have a 44mm flange on your mirrorless camera and a wobbly adapter, plus a lot of money missing (gone on old Canon DSLR lenses with noisy AF motors). The lack of affordable prime lenses is a massive mistake. Meanwhile, this all gives Sony an advantage... i.e. people actually own native E mount lenses and so they can actually shoot with native glass on their cameras, whilst nearly everybody is shooting EF lenses on the R system!!3 points -
Why the camera press need to grow a pair of balls
Trek of Joy and 2 others reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
I think the salient point here, though, is that you were attending in the capacity of an employee of a bona fide media organisation. The events you were covering were a part of a job you were already being paid to do regardless and the success of the specific product in question had no direct impact on your income. Direct affiliate links to the product being "reviewed" and ad traffic generated by the hype around them is actually directly linked to the income of many - but not all -of these individuals on YouTube. If they don't go to the event, generate some heat for the product and see it sell then they don't earn from that week or that month's new product cycle. When you have that sort of direct correlation to an individual's income then its a completely different dynamic to a salaried journalist covering an event. The real problem is how blurred the lines have become between the two.3 points -

Been working on learning color correction with the new-ish tools in FCPx 10.4, so I'm using the P4k samples as grading practice. I'll admit I'm a total novice, but I hope I'm heading in the right direction. The red jersey in the MTB video was way hot, so I pulled it down a bit. The balloon was tough with the sun in one part of the shot. The bugs gave me the heebie-jeebies. Cool stuff, hopefully more to come. Thanks Blackmagic for the samples. Chris3 points -

The guy who shot the Seoul Zoo footage had this to say over on bmcuser: "I did another shoot yesterday which I'm editing right now. As opposed to a $500 35mm, a $1100 24-105, a $2300 50 and a $3000 zoom? You're seriously bashing Nikon's initial rollout compared to Canon's? How many are going to buy a $3000 zoom or a $2300 prime over adapting EF lenses? The whole R line is based around Canon shooters adapting their lenses, hence the THREE adapters. Right now they're both counting on existing DSLR users adapting lenses until they round things out. But what's worse is the fact that they've shown zero sensor advancement in the two years since the 5d4 was released. We already know Nikon has 2.8 zooms and a number of primes coming in the next year. All of your Zed bashing are issues Canon has as well, combined with no IBIS and a crappier sensor that's a couple generations behind current Sony offerings. Are you a paid Canon troll? SMH.3 points

We all know the outcome.... Each camera will have pros and cons... None will check every box. Some people will buy whichever checks the most of their particular boxes. For Fuji at least the 10min limit is thermal protection for the battery, hence the extended time with the battery grip (which houses two extra batteries.) Sometimes I wish Fuji would change their batteries, but then I have 10 of them now... I just got an X-H1 for this very reason — I have an upcoming job where for every stills shot they needed a motion equivalent, and we’re working in real locations around people working so it was just easier to have a camera that can handle both stills and motion in exactly the same way. I previously did a similar job where I shot with my D800 and C100mk2, and the switching back and forth did my head in.2 points

Why the camera press need to grow a pair of balls
newfoundmass and one other reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
The manufacturer have one job. Make a good camera! Good cameras have a tendency to sell! Their job isn't to brainwash the camera press. Or at least it shouldn't be. All a reviewer needs to do a review, is the camera on his desk and a wherewithal to shoot with it. When a manufacturer is spending millions to jazz up the content provider's output with photos of Hawaii and Iceland we have advertorial. When they leave it up to the reviewer to do his own shoots, we see what he's capable of in the plain light of day and see what the camera is capable of in the same warts 'n all real-world. The way it is going, is that tech journalism is becoming like a glossy lifestyle magazine.2 points -
It's time we also held the so-called reviewers responsible for driving the hype-train for handicapped technology for the sake of their pennies in affiliate links. Calling these things "reviews" is fake news. When you're flown out and dined in Hawaii it's not a review, it's a rim job.2 points

100% agree with @Andrew Reid article. This camera is a rip off as is Canon. I disagree with people who disagree. It should not remain silent and in 2018 consumers should not allow such a brand to perform like this. Can't believe someone can buy an Eos R. You like stills, buy a Z7 with way better IQ and specs. You want video, get a Nikon, Sony or Panasonic. Canon is far behind in 95% of stuff. They got AF that's all and it's not like Z7 and A7III AF is bad... Stop saying you have Canon lenses you can adapt so an Eos R can be useful. That's how the company got your balls secured, selling you the lens then for 10 years you buy their absolute shit cameras one after the other, like if you were in jail. Just sell those god damn lens and be done with this scam company .... How can one even make a choice based on the fact he has lens, who told you not to sell them. I changed 5 times camera systems in the last couple of years, didn't have any issue with that at all. @mercer you comment is a non sense, we are here to discuss cameras. People spend time shooting do not worry for them. That does not prevent them to speak and debate about cameras here. BTW you have 5630 posts on EOSHD, are you not out into the world with you camera shooting...?2 points

And this is why I read eoshd.com. I also for 10 years wrote regularly on my own tech blog (I managed to get 3 million views a month), an indeed many big companies invited me to their launches, until I wrote non-so-favorable things about them and I was suddenly (and still are, proudly) on their black list. I think government entities should regulate these events, which in the end are unspoken bribery. Journalists and bloggers and whatnot should NOT accept these invitations to all-expense paid trips to enjoy themselves instead of doing a professional job. What should be done instead? Maybe send a camera to their homes and have them test the equipment in an unbiased way, and stop the stupid practice of creating black lists for people who simply speak the truth. These companies should actually be grateful of the people who tell them things right on their face, so that they can improve their products and compete better, instead of getting praise for idiots and low-lifes who do not have the courage and the balls to behave like a true professional. Kudos for you, you are not alone and that's why so many people like me do free PR for you so more people read your unbiased opinions.2 points -

What is mediocre about 80 lens line up + 100 more third party and if you want you can adapt almost any other lens brand because it has the smallest flange. Before talking such nonsence people should take 5 second and inform themselves so as not to look like a fool. And tell me what should have the fanboys have wanted that much more than great body and sealing, great/best evf, FF DX 4k, 120 fps fhd, IBIS, great video AF and 10 bit/nlong with my Ninja flame. All of that for $ 2000? Tell me another camera that does that much for this price nowwwwwwwwwwwww, and not some mythical camera that will come in the future and at this price. Because lets be clear the A73 just came out 6 month ago and I don't think it will be upgraded to A74 for at least a year.2 points

Surprise surprise, the Nikon Z6 is still a better and cheaper camera for us filmmakers than the newly announced Canon EOS R! Sure, it gained 10bit output and log (just like the Nikon Z6), but it basically is still a Canon 5Dmk4 (which means an awful crop, so why bother buying a FF camera in the first place? And no IBIS!).2 points

I make a good living and was ready to hand B&H my CC# for one + the 35 1.8 and the 28-70 F/2. I told myself I would not if the crop was worse that 1.4-1.5 in UHD. Canon shot themselves in the foot again. Canon is like the EX you broke up with a couple years ago - she comes back around every so often - you have a good one night fling and romanticize about the past. Go out to dinner, talk about the 5d3 raw back in 2013, hop into bed. Then the next day you hear she's still doing drugs - hasn't changed at all. There's a reason you two broke up. I wanted to be wrong here - haven't been excited about a camera for a while - I hate the Sony colors and overheating, hate Panasonic's shitty AF, etc. Yes, but are you 100% sure it's UHD out and not just 1080p out? I don't recall any Canon bodies doing UHD HDMI out.2 points

Good question. As of now I am mostly filming extreme sports and mountain activities (multi day trekking / climbing, paragliding, ...) I am always in action and challenging environment with very poor screen visibility and fast moving people as subject. Video AF if right (like Canon DPAF) is crucial for me in those situations. Now if it is a sport event where you can afford the weight of a nice external screen and so on, I guess you can do a good job at manual focusing. My case is not specific and I see many people either in the same situation either in completely different scenarios. Also, I think a good chunk of camera buyers are basic amateur that want great quality and focus done by itself without having to do anything. Video AF is important for those people too. Vloggers is another group... EDIT: and you are right, other things such as IQ are super important. If the GH5 was the only option I would use it. But A7III has good enough IQ for me for example, yet the FF and better AF make a greater difference for me.2 points

Panasonic announcing a full frame camera on Sept. 25???
tosvus and one other reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
The problem with going with the EF mount is that it'd be positive short term but a negative long term. Canon will continue with DSLRs for as long as possible, and there will be a ton of old lenses to use, but the time will come when the EF mount will become obsolete as mirrorless takes over for Canon. Do you really want your entrance into the full frame game to be based on a mount that will likely decline greatly over the next 10 years? It kind of has to be a new mount. One thing that they could possibly do, which could be interesting, it's bring VSM as seen on the LS300 to the camera, allowing the use of m43, APS-C and pretty much every other type of lense to be used with an adapter without vignetting. This is an option, honestly, that I'm surprised more camera makers haven't done. Being able to punch in exactly what sensor size your lens covers is such a powerful feature imo.2 points -

They said that all their new lens where design with video in mind. There are only haters that just want to spread all type of fud about Nikon and video. They have put speed setting for the AF in video where you can speed it up or down, this with 10 bit, ibis, Nlog etc. make for a very powerful package for video shooters. They even added a pin in their tripod mount, might seem mundane but try using a dslr or Mirrorless camera a whole day for pro work and you would see how anoying and distracting when your camera is always spinning. If even this they thought about, then they really took video very very seriously.1 point

I think that Panasonic has the biggest balls of any of the big companies. With the GH5 and GH5-5 they had ZERO fear to market against the bigger sensor companies. I always thought they were like a wolverine in the forest absolutely willing and eager to attack wolves, mountain lions ang grizzely bears all day long....absolutely agressive and fearless. If we see them going full frame with that same ferocious mentality. My God, they will dump everything known to man into that thing. They will do things that Sony and Canon will be too terrified to do. 10bit CODECS, All I frame, 6k sensor readout and internal recording. Anamorphic modes....maybe even raw sensor data output? Yeah.....they got the biggest marketing balls.1 point

Geoff CB reacted to TheRenaissanceMan for a topic
It's $200 cheaper. Not exactly in a different price category. And OSS isn't a critical feature when all your bodies have IBIS. Plus, the the Zeiss 24-70/4 isn't exactly blowing the doors off for optical performance. On a separate note, Jon, I don't think anyone appreciates the condescending attitude.1 point -
Looks like Nikon have done their homework and thoroughly copied Canon's dual pixel AF for video implementation: The Z 7 newly offers AF-C as a movie focus mode. By pressing the AF-ON button during movie recording, you can flexibly control when AF starts and stops. Used in combination with AF speed and AF tracking sensitivity options, this mode also makes it possible to use “focus pull” techniques, to make scenes more impressive. AF-C allows you to take full advantage of the shallow depth-of- field and beautiful bokeh effects that an FX-format sensor and NIKKOR Z lenses offer. Focusing speed and the smoothness of focus transitions when switching between subjects can make a huge difference in movies. The Z 7 lets you customize the speed* and tracking sensitivity of AF when filming videos. AF speed is adjustable in 11 steps, between “Slow” (-5) and “Fast” (+5). At lower levels, focus is achieved slowly, making scenes look more cinematic. AF tracking sensitivity can be adjusted in 7 steps, from “High” (1) to “Low” (7). Select a higher sensitivity if you want to switch focus quickly to the next subject, and a lower sensitivity for maintaining focus on the current subject for longer. Smart of them to copy top features from various industry leaders. Love the on/off AF toggle in Canon DPAF units. speed & sensitivity settings should also allow diverse & smooth video AF response.. When “On” is selected for “Auto-area AF face detection,” the camera automatically detects faces, and users can choose which face to focus on if there is more than one. Thanks to a newly developed face-detection and subject-tracking algorithm, the AF can keep tracking a subject’s face if they turn their head or briefly look away. This should prevent the AF system going haywire when multiple faces are in field, and from the looks of it, it actually works:1 point
