The two cameras you mention should really be compared to the Z6 .... comparable cost to the A7iii and the X-T3. After comparing all three (Z 7) and about to buy a GH5s I ended up with the Z 7 ... as a second camera to my Leica SL. Sold a bunch of rangefinder stuff to afford it ... now making the transition to new HDMI cable XQD reader Smallrig cage and picked up a 50 1.2 AIS ... historically my third. Looks like Novoflex will have 10 adapters coming shortly. Need one for my M and R lenses. Hoping for a couple of days to get some 10bit log to look at color. Really only had time to play with AF in stills which seems good enough for my needs ... as I normally shoot MF and will use it for interviews and potential gimbal shoots. I have the Function 1 button set for WB and can set a custom balance with an Expodisc on the fly without taking my eye from the VF. Higher iso and dynamic range seem very good ... if the output approaches that of the SL at lower iso I will be pleased. Custom WB solves that ... and even then setting a bit warmer K value is helpful.3 points

EOSHD TV - Episode 1 - Photokina 2018
deezid and one other reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
It was a great occasion to enjoy some of Photokina with Dave Altizer. This video was an experiment in many ways, to plant a seed for more EOSHD YouTube content. I hope you enjoy the start of EOSHD TV - let's see how this goes in the future when I rope more unlucky people in front of the camera and come up with more content (the channel won't just be interviews). We talk about a range of camera-nerd stuff in the video, not least of all that's on the table in front of us. The Fuji X-T3, the Hasselblad X1D and Fuji GFX 50S medium format cameras, along with the other interesting finds at the show. Warning: contains controversial opinions!!2 points -
Sony a7 III discussion
mercer and one other reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
Wow nice stuff. Sony just does so well in dark situations with DR and noise. For the money a no brainer. Yeah still no Canon color science, but a big gain from my A7s! Although I really do like the Grungy look from the original. Although this is one of my favorite videos using the original A7s. Shot at 60fps, pretty much OOC. I don't see why a person can't make something pretty great with one. They are close now to 700 bucks for a FF camera. Damn good machine for the money.2 points -
Indeed we were! It depends on the size of the rig you're willing to take. For me, my tolerance doesn't go that far! But in general, yes, that's the best approach. I find that without an easyrig you're taking the full weight of the setup (plus your arms) and eventually that will result in shake from your arms, so an easyrig will help with that too. Dude, you crack me up! I don't think it would take an easy rig to make me look like a doofus.. I'm well on my way already!!2 points

Idk, Kye’s wife may leave him if he shows up to Christmas dinner, looking like a doofus with an easy rig contraption. He should definitely make his kids hold up color charts and slates though. Just don’t yell “CUT” and give Aunt Esmeralda direction during Grace... he is the reason for the season afterall.2 points -
Excellent question.. "VALUE" is a concept that people often find vague and confusing, but it is absolutely critical to what you are trying to do. It's also difficult to describe, but I'll try Value is something that people are willing to pay for. Maybe that payment is in money, maybe it's in their time, maybe it's in their attention. The whole idea of this stuff is that you create something that other people are willing to pay for. If I see that Casey Neistat has posted a video I make a judgement about if it's worth my time to watch it. ie, my time is valuable, but is what I get from watching the video more valuable to me? If so, I will click play and watch it. If I get bored or whatever during the video I will stop watching, but if it keeps being of value to me then I will keep watching. If it's really valuable, I might subscribe, hoping to trade more of my time for more valuable content. If I think it's valuable to other people I will share it. With the release of the BMPCC4K lots of people have shared videos about test footage and first impressions and the like. These people who post those videos do so because the content of the video is valuable (or at least, they think it's valuable). If I watch a video and it's a waste of time I'm not going to share it, unless I think it will be amusing to waste other people's time, which means that I get some amusement, which is valuable to me. One person who got the BMPCC4K posted an 8 hour live stream of them not unboxing it. It got shared because it's kind of funny, considering that everyone else unboxed it with excitement, so seeing someone not care if different and interesting, and gave me a laugh, and I like laughing, so that's valuable to me. Does that make sense? Business used to be pretty simple - people would sell you something for money. Sometimes it was a physical product (carton of milk), sometimes it was their effort (hiring a plumber), sometimes it was their time (getting legal advice, or taking a course). Now things are more complicated and involve lots of people, but ultimately each party involved (the creator, YT, advertisers, etc) each trade something they have for something they don't have that is more valuable to them. Vimeo isn't full. If you start a channel that gives tomorrows winning lottery numbers each day then just watch what happens.... This is where we need to talk about quality. People will follow the best quality providers they can. If Masey Nice-hat starts a YT channel and is better than Casey Neistat then I will prefer watching Macey's videos, and if I only have time to watch one channel, would unsubscribe from Casey. If you make the best content on a service, people will watch, like, share and subscribe, just like the closing comment on every YT video. Peter McKinnon hit 1M subs 9 months after starting his channel, and this is why - he made better videos than most people. The other element is sales.. SALES is telling people about your product. I used to think that sales was a bad thing. The old "pushing people to buy things they don't need and can't afford to impress people they don't like" thing. Now, I think of sales a bit differently. People have time, money, or skills and they also have needs or wants. They want to exchange what they have for things they want or need. Sales is about matching peoples needs or wants to products or services that will genuinely help them. It's about solving problems. If you make a good video or write something good, then going out and telling people about it who would be interested in it isn't pushing at all, it's about helping. People who are bored want entertainment. People who want to know more about the BMPCC4K want information on it. People who want to know how to tie a bow-tie want a (short!) tutorial, preferably with a video or pictures. This is what I mean when I say make something valuable and go out and tell people about it.2 points

@Liam It seems that you are starting to somewhat answer your own questions in a few of your responses here, which is always a good thing. Never give up, but become very comfortable with adapting while trying to maintain your “ideal” standards. Don’t get any goals or standards mixed up with the idea of not being adaptable yourself. True adaptability fortunately does not always mean full compromise, even though it often can present itself that way, especially in the constant self-promotion social media world. I often discover incredibly interesting work online and I’m amazed how some very talented people have a very low profile, as their work should be more widely known. Of course, I see the opposite as well, but then again sometimes it is not really about the work in relation to popular social media information, as their personable or charismatic persona and the ability to share random things at times, is more of a draw or focus. Even if you are not interested, some more business and marketing type of approaches should be explored, to at least see how things work and emerge when using different platforms if you decide to use those in the future. It may not be the fun part for you, but it is important. What do you really want? In your area of focus, who do you respect and why? Do you have access to a group/club, of like-minded people (writers, filmmakers, editors, illustrators, animators, etc.) in your town or region? Perhaps get involved in some different things that can help you grow, create with others, pull together knowledge and resources or approaches from many places. Maybe you could meet someone you could collaborate with, that likes to be in front of a camera, while you on the other hand could contribute mainly to the content shown to try out some different things you have in mind. It could be an occasional or just a one-off thing. As you have referenced one person previously (Adrian Tomine), maybe you can also consider some elements from the approaches of others even outside of your area of focus as well. Don't romanticize things or any "one" approach or method to much, or that could influence you to maybe not be open enough in the future to any changes that may really be needed to adapt. I’m not going to tell a lie here, so yes it can at times take some luck to achieve further progress when stuck, but all the hard work (often unrewarded) that has been done initially, has to be explored continually to prepare for any such future possibilities, whether they may involve luck or not. Prepare for no luck, but be very appreciative when you experience it. Since most everyone has a little luck at some point, if somewhat prepared, one can then get more out of it. Any achievements attained large or small, can be really life changing and the positive consequences imparted may last many years or sometimes just only for a short while. It is not easy at times, as things change and evolve all the time. I still like to think hard work, research, and creativity will always help one adapt and evolve. It is a lot to navigate, but try to keep your standards and stay hungry, and even sometimes warrior like. When great success happens, use that to move further forward, but keep the idea in the back of the mind of not getting to comfortable as things can change over time. Follow the guideposts along the way, which you may uniquely notice, since you may already immerse yourself in that area of interest, follow a similar standard or perspective established by those before you that have gained some respect in your area of focus. Again, adaptability does not have to be a compromise, so use your creativity, learn and grow further to even higher standards perhaps not thought of. You cannot win if you do not play, so it is important to finish things also. Start and finish many projects, even if you don't like the final product, just start something else and keep doing it till finished, as it will decidedly evolve and maybe a clearer direction would emerge for you to pursue with promoting your work. Whether your work develops into a more niche area or becomes broader in scope, it could then help to more clearly determine better, the “what, where and how” to then focus on and possibly gain some more traction. Not sure if it is ever an issue for you, but don't forget to not take yourself to seriously at times either, and don't forget to give yourself some credit when warranted or if a goal (big or small) is achieved. All progress counts.2 points

Convinced now, seriously! I mean, how could this camera not give a fantastic image. It'ś BM after all now now even with great low light capabilities. I did some testing myself to work it out, and long story short is that if you watch a video in 4K (or 1080p60 I am told) then the bitrate of the stream from YT is considerably higher. That's right. It's for static shots. But static shots where the subject is stationary, like a building. I tried it a few times on an interview where I was static, but when the subject shifted their feet or leaned in their chair it created problems for the image. If you're taking a shot of a mountain or something like that, it's kinda neat. It's just not something I want, or need to, activate very often.1 point -

But if you have any questions/concerns I can answer them all in time. I also bought the XLR adapter from BMD today so will do some audio tests!1 point -
The Z7 is a very specialized high megapixel camera that does video. The Z6 is clearly the ideal allrounder hybrid photo/video camera. Perhaps if Nikon would have lauch only the z7 we could have compared it to the other cameras. But when you think about it, its a full frame camera for only 400-500 usd more. I think it is very very competitive. Little example of IBIS1 point

Sony a7 III discussion
heart0less reacted to TheRenaissanceMan for a topic
Did my first non corporate/commercial/videography shoot with the A7 III. Gotta say, in 4K with Resolve Color Management it's grading really nicely. Even held up to some mildly aggressive power windowing with only a little compression weirdness. Skin tones look nice (if thin), and operationally it was a nice smooth ride once I got all the initial setup done. My only real complaint with the files is that highlight detail is VERY brittle. Desaturating and other tricks for reigning in highlights help, but anything remotely close to clipping is going to fight manipulation hard, even in LOG. Such is the nature of 8-bit files. Super fun project, and I'm looking forward to pushing this little camera harder in the coming weeks.1 point -
Sony A6500 Question
webrunner5 reacted to Dustin for a topic
It’s the perfect camera for what I need right now. I went with a native lens to give the Auto Focus a try and chose the Sony 35mm 1.8. Got it on eBay real cheap and I really like it. I’ve shot now about 6-7 videos with this combo and it’s a keeper. Recently did a big interview project and although I can’t share it on here, footage looked fantastic . It was the easiest interview I’ve ever shot. Used @Andrew Reid EOSHD and shot a combo of his baked in pro color profile and pro log. Just hit zone focus on the head and that is all I had to look at, the a6500 kept focus perfectly every time! Granted I lit my subject and chose the background/environment. Love this camera!1 point -
Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless talk hots up
Yurolov reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
I have an EOS R on the way in the UK. In stock at most places. So I will review it, at least. Whether I keep it or send it back, I am not sure. I can't see myself being as enthusiastic about using it for video versus some of the similarly priced alternatives like the A7 III and Nikon Z6 (clearly technically superior for 4K in every way) let alone what else I have to play with at the moment (X-T3, etc.). But I do intend to explore what it has to offer at least, keeping some small flame of Canon alive on the site. A few EOSHD articles and maybe a guide if I end up using it more often. Can probably get some nice stills from it even if it doesn't work out for video. I won't be using the native R mount lenses on it, will be using the EF adapter... a bit like a mirrorless 5D IV. Also might be able to run some Magic Lantern tests on it to help A1ex and co, so thought it was worth a purchase.1 point -

I would venture to say Sareesh probably has a better Grasp of what video is all about more than Anyone on here, and probably the vast majority of people in the world. Is he always right, nobody is, but I will take his opinions as real truth. And who has a camera longer than 2 weeks that reviews anything other than their own personal camera? That is 336 hours. Surely a person can figure out a most things in that amount of time. It's not like the first camera that BMD has ever made. It's not like the sensor is new either. It's pretty much a dumbed down GH5s with ProRes and their UI and color science. Not that that is a bad thing. Especially for the money. I think I would rather have a GH5s and the new Atomos Ninja V. But that is more money obliviously. Add a Gimbal , a Speedbooster and not a lot you Can't do with it.1 point -

All is relative, I think it sold well, so it has its own appeal. It was more special when it came out a decade ago (gosh, makes me feel old...) One photographer who I liked wrote, that the reason he was able to take nice street portraits with it was people approaching him with great interest, starting a conversation, etc.1 point -
I suggest you repair to the BMD cinematography forum, and read the discussions initiated by Sareesh, where he betrays astonishing ignorance -- even venturing to lecture BMD staff (Captain Hook), among many others who patiently tried to explain to him the basics, to no effect. Only BMD and your deity of choice know why Sareesh and other bloggers were chosen for advance units. With the exception of the Proav UK footage, from a dealer, which didn't try to do much other than set levels, the grading was pretty terrible, even by amateur standards. Maybe their skill level was deemed to reflect the average Pocket buyer. Alas.1 point

It's worse that that; Wolfcrow is woefully misinformed on basics like log shooting, LUTs, normalization and dual circuit gain. He has no grasp of what the camera requires in post. His reviews should be limited to point and shoots.1 point

Haha, The Nucleus-M certainly has accurate repeatable focus. Can't see why the Nano wouldn't as well. In any case, for most single operators with a gimbal though, there is no real need for it to be perfectly repeatable as most single operators wouldn't lay down camera or actor marks to hit every take or even mark up the focus wheel disc. It's just a good way of being able to pull focus from one thing to another or just choose what you want in focus. Until Autofocus lenses can read your mind, they will never be as good as a solution like the Tilta ...other brands are available ?1 point -

Bingo. And the same could be said about film producers as about books. Producers know their audiences, they know what it takes with a production to get a certain type of movie made, they know what is hot or not in the market at the moment, etc... and they're looking for writers/directors/stories which match this interlocked mesh of needs/wants they have. Been somewhat trying to make this point with a few of my friends lately.1 point

After Kye mentioned Gary Vaynerchuck, I looked him up, and Gary Vaynerchuck was kinda saying exactly that. If you're starting up a new business then you should YouTube vlog its progress. As most businesses fail, but documenting the process around that? There is a lot of value in that which many others will appreciate. Seems like that Instagram person you're following is kinda doing the same. She documented her process of making a film, and many people found that in itself to be very valuable, and she benefited from that in return in it helping to further get her film made. And once you've got 2K subs, then you'd hope that is work $100/yr to you!1 point

Casey Neistat is so irrelevant to what you’re doing that he’s hardly worth mentioning... even though I disagree on your opinion of him. He’s a reality TV star selling himself and he’s very good at that. I admit that I’ll get sucked into a few episodes every now and then and follow him around Manhattan or whatever boring adventure he brings his audience along for. Instagram is a game, you follow people while you post stuff. You like people’s work and they check out your work. It’s networking at your fingertips... in some ways it’s superficial and in a lot of ways, it works. I post some frame grabs every now and again but haven’t jumped in and exploited the medium yet. One woman I follow started posting her story, really her journey about getting her film made and she created enough followers and interest that she just ran a successful crowdfunding campaign that’s going to pay for the next phase of her production. So IG can work, but you have to play the game. It’s also pretty cool to see how many talented people there are in this world. Haha... you had me at toucan but I stayed for the nom nom.1 point

When watching all the Youtubers hanging out in Hawaii, you know it smells like a full on bribe in the face of camera justice. It's simple, we're living in the age of me, myself and I. Grab what you can grab and a free trip to Hawaii is of course a great grab. Free! to Hawaii! Are you kidding me? I would do the same. I would even throw in an amazing review. Live from Hawaii to show the world how awesome I am in this camera world. I would be inner circle and rub shoulders with the hardworking people from Canon and not to mention the rest of reviewers on Youtube. Hell, I would make new friends with other 'grab this opportunity' reviewers. Wow, live doesn't get any better...... Unfortunately, the cameras sometimes don't get any better either. I guess we need you, Andrew. We really do. To give an honest, critical and technical sound review of a camera and its possibilities. I thrive on our opinion. And I know about spending money for trips to Iceland. It's worth every penny to invest in those experiences. As I learned from a wise american a long time ago: Free is not a concept.1 point -
