  1. This is a quick discussion on the gear that I used to film GO Colombia which can be seen here: https://youtu.be/JhChJh5cOUE

  2. So many false informations here... It’s not specificaly targeted at you but yes you can totally record custom baked in LUT and that’s an overlooked killer feature. Actually the biggest feature after raw. You can basically get any look straight of camera. I have a review coming showing the power of it ! And so was I worried about highlights handling and DR when I first watched the early footage online. But I can tell you : this camera has more DR than the « legendary » original BMPCC. Once again, I’ll show it in my review. So to sum up : saying that GH5 has a better output for SOOC footage is nonsense I think, granted extended video mode and video mode aren’t any good (you can achieve something pleasing with extended video LUT applied on RAW when you have complete control on WB, with PRORES, I find it to be more complicated...) Anyway, people (me included !) shouldn’t jump at conclusions when they’ve never shot with the camera.

  3. None of these recent camera releases has persuaded me to parts ways with the GH5, here’s why: - Ergonomically awesome for video with loads of custom functionality. Feels MADE for video. - 10 bit 4:2:2 codecs are very strong. - MFT sensor, while Speedboosted, is easier to focus than a full frame sensor. Very adaptable. - Great battery life. - IBIS is excellent. - EVF and Flip Out LCD are awesome. - @Sage Alexa conversion makes it a different camera. - Anamorphic modes. - Monitor LUT - super useful! I’ve tried the AF on a gimbal with the GH5 and it works quite well. Not Canon or Sony level, but decent. Theres features in the other cameras that look appealing, but the way I view it, how much will it change my videos? I’ve opted to spend and upgrade my lighting to a full Aputure setup and camera movement. These things directly influence the picture more and invite increased skill and knowledge in composition.

  4. The Pocket 4K has a lot of interesting features, of course, but somebody needs to do a proper comparison of 8bit, 10bit, ProRes, LOG, RAW, etc. Because the image quality is closer between them than people realise, when it comes to the end-result. I've had Blackmagic cameras in the past, and it's fun pulling around a raw file in Resolve and seeing all that dynamic range on demand, but then I have also had a lot of enjoyment out of 8bit S-LOG and Canon LOG too. Seeing how silky smooth, noise-less the shadows are in low light from a full frame sensor, being able to fluidly play it back and slap on a LUT over Canon 1D C footage - wow - you wouldn't know THAT was 8bit. Instantly nice colour and dynamic range. Same with Hybrid LOG Gamma from an A7 III, or V-LOG with the GH5 and F-LOG on an X-T3. Even the EOS R, for all its faults, has an amazing ALL-I codec with film-like colour - and it's 8bit. We are trading a lot of things on the Pocket 4K for that RAW codec. 10bit too, but others offer that now, so it's not unique to Blackmagic. Out goes a large sensor, out goes decent video AF, out goes IBIS, out goes articulated screen, battery life, high quality body, weather sealing and more besides. So it is important not to over hype it, as some have been doing on this thread. I have nothing against the Blackmagic Pocket 4K, but it has to be seen objectively. I do have a little bit of annoyance pent up at the company, for their lame availability and non-support of EOSHD despite the tons of work I have done over the years to bring people's knowledge up to speed on their cameras and Resolve, but I am not going to let that influence the review once I finally get one. Still no luck on that front BTW.

  6. Viltrox has an affordable EF adapter with AF and aperture. Think its $130 or something like that. I bought it on sale in a store so I'm not sure about ebay prices. I have both the Viltrox and the Kipon EF speedbooster. Both lets you change aperture with the dial on the camera. AF is rather lens dependent. I have a quick demo of the Viltrox on my YouTube and will publish a review of the speedbooster hopefully this weekend.

    X-T3 or Pocket 4K?

Hard to beat though with this disruptive actual price range now for 4K RAW. BMD is rocking for such department matter : ) They are now who RED promised to be a decade ago : -)

  8. I agree. Lots of people are saying "this 4K RAW isn't that much better than our best H264 cameras, how disappointing" when I think they should be saying "wow, our H264 cameras weren't completely put to shame by this 4K RAW camera, how things have changed since the BMPCC, and aren't we spoiled for choice now!". I totally agree. I watched the 2012 Zacuto camera challenge recently (doing it blind as they suggested) and ended up putting the cameras in three tiers, which I found out afterwards were basically sorting them by price! The only exception to that was the F65 which I placed in the middle tier instead of the top tier because I didn't like the grade. I think there are two ways to properly execute a camera comparison - set the cameras to their flattest profile and show the files untouched out of the camera having only done a WB, or use a colour checker and have the NLE grade it for you using the full checker so it can linearise the luminance and adjust primaries and all that stuff. Otherwise, like you say, we're evaluating their grade and not the camera. Has anyone compared the P4K to the BMPCC by downscaling the P4K to 1080 and then comparing? Sharpness and resolution have a lot to do with things being cinematic...

  9. Well guys, as someone who has it, (and works professionally with cameras) I can tell you I love it! That’s it, it’s a beautiful piece of technology and even though I haven’t had time to shoot something bigger than a few ProRes clips in the evenings before bed I totally adore the images it produce. I’m very excited for my 8sinn cage and T5 holder to arrive next week as I have 2 days off to really get to know the camera!

    X-T3 or Pocket 4K?

I've seen the 1st footage... You all too, I presume, for sure. Maybe yet too early for evaluation, my first impression though is Fujifilm beats the new Blackmagic to infer from the institutional imagerie released so far at least. I'd dare to add. Or only random option of (circumstantial) grading from less fortunate choices by Blackmagic brand to promote their own product? I don't even mention in features, despite the more versatile choice of glass on MFT side, when not the ludicrous cheap C-mount to couple, or the hybrid advantage versus CC on the other side... ...just the IQ outcome coming from there! DSLR now mirrorless movement revenge? Tasty when not already SOC versus Thin, which means more prone to aliasing issues (no OLPF on both but one gets more than the other as seems), lovely but a bit predictable, not so creamy flexible range like half stop larger APS-C format. We all know the superior codec offer, let alone the BRAW to upcome from Blackmagic, horses for courses and all that yadda yadda but what about the pudding? What are your thoughts?

  11. MMhhhh no. Never had a contrasty hard look in RAW in my Nikon stills, don't know what you are talking about. Nothing to love or hate just a flat RAW image with lots of DR and flexibility. Not much difference with the Canon FF and Sony FF I have had. In video, I can't say but the Flat profile does not look to hard contrasty from what I have seen. What you refer to looks a lot more like user gradings and shooting than the camera.

  12. Yeah that’s what I ineloquently meant as a big plus for the P4K. H.265 files are a nightmare for my setup. I can transcode my ML Raw files to CDNG, bring them into Resolve, color correct them and export them to ProRes 444 faster than I could transcode and downscale the NX500 h.265 4K files to 1080p ProRes LT.

    Lenses

I was on a lookout for a quite compact and bright 35mm for my A7. Sammy 35/2.8 is perfect, but its rather slowish aperture often forced me to use high ISO in low-light scenarios. Native 35/1.4 lenses for Sony E would be nice, if not for their size and weight. Can't imagine myself walking around with these cannons on my neck. So I browsed the internet and found out that Samyang 35/1.2 (meant for mirrorless APS-C cameras) covers full frame quite nicely. I wouldn't be me if I didn't test it, therefore I rented one today. Here are my results: The 1st and 2nd photos were not cropped at all, the 3rd and 4th were cropped vertically just a little. All of them shot at f/1.2 To remove the most noticeable vingnetting, an uniform 1.1x crop would do. 1.2x to remove it completely. The next 6 photos are comparisons between 35/2.8 at f/2.8 and 35/1.2 at f/1.2 35/1.2 seems to be a tiny bit wider than 35/2.8. All in all, in my opinion this little lens is quite useable. Definitely not for images that require corner-to-corner sharpness, but for a fast walk-around glass - why not?

  15. Yes, but I had to download it to add blur from my PotPlayer... I'd rather look to 'The Color of Light' video and the focal reducer shots (18-35mm f/1.8). You feel the difference to thinner MFT glass BTW. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXBv7mSrIHo https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicpocketcinemacamera/gallery tip to do it with embedded videos from vimeo LOL they embedded it on their webpage but they don't allow others to embed it from YT... these autocratic tics from a company like BMD are killing me : X download embedded videos on Chrome: customize and control button on the right corner -> More tools -> Developer tools -> F+Ctrl -> mp4 -> select all & copy -> word processor -> F+Ctrl = resolution chosen -> copy paste link -> click on right to save as wherever you want in your drive as you wish ; -)

    X-T3 or Pocket 4K?

Out of likes now, guys, thanks for your contribution anyway. Hey Don, I put my 'Horses for Courses' disclaimer up there : D In any case, my ultimate choices nowadays ; ) are P4K and X-H2 for IBIS add-on : D I'd buy the X-T3 instead if I would only have one camera choice today : -)

  17. You might be a silly tourist, but in film-making terms you're definitely not! Truly nice work, and if the modest setup is limiting you then it's not coming through in the edit. Makes me want to sell everything and buy an RX100 and just go shoot stuff, which is a sign of a successful film! Subscribed.

    X-T3 or Pocket 4K?

Interesting points indeed, even though I don't think MFT is useless at all. On the contrary, it can end much helpful on lightweight side (not the Pocket 4K case anyways, no matter the reasons behind that overheating free route) and versatile choice of glass. Your mastery can actually shine even more in a world of automated procedures, including of this craft where I see both of them as an added value though, not the opposite. There's always the possibility of upgrade for something between APS-C and FF much larger going on then, with a focal reducer and that marvelous 18-35mm f/1.8 piece, as for instance ; ) which testifies on the other hand the premise: the larger the more fun we are eager to arrive sooner or later ; -) However, one of the cinema mounts closer to old film format(s) albeit no less than the '35mm' APS-C, but where we can still find no-brainer bargain offers from one side to rather cheap purchases on ebay, as C-mount end is. (and I hadn't read your post yet, David, both practically entering at same time when I was basically writing something to refer the same supply plataform) : -D

    X-T3 or Pocket 4K?

https://www.43rumors.com/save-230-on-the-panasonic-refurbished-gh5/ Well refurbished / secondhand they seem to often go for sub US$1.5K ish?? And GH5 still has features which are better than the X-T3, such as waveform monitor, full size HDMI, anamorphic, etc Yes, the GH5 is showing its "age" now (only a few months away from 3yrs since it was announced), but it can still hold is own as a competitive all round option to choose. (especially if you already have a collection of MFT lenses/adapters, like myself and many others would) Having said that, I likely won't buy a GH5 any time in the next year, but hoping to get a Panasonic G85. But in no rush, I can keep on waiting for their price to slide on down. Hoping for the next low end G series to come out soon (as two of them got released between the GH4 and GH5, but none since the GH5!). Which will then push down the G85 price a lot on eBay

  20. For me and my use the XT3 blows the Pocket: - Great 10 bit codec yet not too heavy. RAW is a PITA. - APSC sensor - video AF: this alone would make me choose the XT3 vs the Pocket even if the pocket was $200 - lighter and smaller Back in the days the GH5 was an option as it was the only decently hybrid specced camera for video. Today's we have good FF and APSC specs equivalent or better than GH5. So WHY on earth would I ever buy a M43 tiny sensor again? 0 reason. APSC is the new M43, FF is the real deal and a few years from now MF will probably be. As for portability arguments, the only thing standing for M43, well it does not work with the pocket considering its size. And with the GH5 neither cause the XT3 is better and as portable so this argument is dead. In fact I believe M43 is absolutely dead. People still believing in M43 are the same people who believed in Sony A-Mount being not dead the last 5 years, with Sony keep repeating they are fully committed to it (LOL). 0 reason to use a tiny sensor if it is not more portable. RX100 with 1" sensor is so portable it actually is great and make sense. GH5, Pocket 4K, all M43 cameras bigger than XT3 are dead. When the XH2 is here with IBIS and even better spec and ergonomic, I know of no camera in the world below $6K and below FF that will touch it. Then A7S III and Pana S1 as well as future FF will blow anything in the FF territory. Anyone buying a GH5 vs a XT3 is out of his mind. The pocket has RAW so that's one thing but if you need real RAW stuff for business and work with big equipment just get a proper camera and if it's too expensive change your job. Seriously, who is gonna spend $2000 in a GH5 now?

  27. Oh no doubt on the handling side you can do a Lot better. But 10,000 bucks is a hell of a long haul from 1000 bucks. And I doubt not many of those even in that price range will beat the ultimate output this thing has. Hell there aren't many that have even beat the original BMPCC at any cost. Raw is a great equalizer.

  29. Yeah Raw is Always going to win with good grading skills. Look at the Canon ML results. And so is ProRes, especially with company's that have good Color Science. It is the better Codec because it is 10, 12, 14 bit and has a data rate out the wazoo. I have been seeing better grading from just what seems normal people than BMD themselves seemed to produce in the beginning. Kind of odd to me. So there is hope for this camera. But you better load up with recording media and a shit pot full of batteries. Sort of sounds familiar doesn't it. ?

  33. Kipon updates can make a HUGE difference. I had one of the first Kipon EF to M43 adapters and it was not very good for stills as sold for auto focus, many would have said it was close to unusable but after a firmware update it was pretty close to native for AFS at least. Kipon make great stuff.

  34. This. Humans struggle to judge things objectively, instead viewing it as relative to its nearest comparisons. For instance a similar problem you get it is people get upset and grumpy about how "awful modern day life is", yet from the big picture view, we've never had it better! Even the 90th percentile of us in a 1st World Country are living better off than the Kings of France would in the 1500's I'll admit though, it is a battle to be happy and content with what you have now instead of lusting after the latest shiny toy. I own the original BMPCC after all, but the more I read this thread the more I want the BMPCC4K..... *if* I do give into tempting to buy another camera, I'll try to get either the Panasonic G85 which is much cheaper and would actually be more useful for my YouTube vlogging, or a 2nd Sony PMW-F3 which I'm often finding useful as a second matching angle to my current F3. Half the people... that includes you and I, right? ? But yeah, kinda tempted to follow that plan too and buy one next year secondhand. However a flaw in that plan is what if they're still only fulfilling pre-order even into early next year.... ha!! But whatever excuse I need to tell myself to avoid buying one this year!

It's like going for a test drive, the dealer not mentioning the steering wheel is bent, and the driver not even noticing! They are both soft. It looks similar to the old 5D Mark III (stock video mode) in 2012. There's 6 years of Canon progress for you.

  41. This is a really nice testament to how resolution really has gigantic diminishing returns when it comes to perceptual image quality. Manufacturers should be investing in things that actually matter such as color-depth, color-science and dynamic range. This footage looks like it was shot on a 2010 handycam, except with somehow worse color-science.

  42. I wished. But getting tired of changing system and this mk2 will come in 2-4y. Wish I could stay with one brand and be done with it a few years. Latest rumors say no IBIS on A7SIII. It is starting to become a joke. We will have S1 with no video AF, A7S with no IBIS and rest of the world with no 4K60p. A joke that nobody wants to combine 4K60p FF with ibis with good AF...

Keep in mind when shooting with Eterna you need to crank up the DR setting if in high contrast conditions.... which I did not do... as I was not aware of this information at the time. This is not an issue in FLog. The GH5S was set to use VLogL, so it was capturing maximum dynamic range.
