I am upset there is no pop up flash. For a camera that has stills capability this is a bad decision for a camera at this price point and will put off many buyers. They have not included an EVF to make it more familiar to people who transition from a mobile phone but why then do they not make it go in a pocket like a mobile phone but then lie to everyone and say it's a pocket camera? It's easy for them to give away software as it doesn't cost anything to make and doesn't add any weight to the camera but why do I need software to use this camera when other cameras work fine without it? Also there is no lens with the camera so that is an extra item you will have to buy and I don't see this mentioned in any of the videos. If BM don't make lenses then they shouldn't be selling cameras to people as this is like selling a car to someone without wheels. It seems BM do not care about customers who haven't got a clue.5 points

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
Erthal and 4 others reacted to A_Urquhart for a topic
Not really sure what you mean by this. Yes, I like the camera because i knew exactly what it was going to be and it has lived up to that expectation. I'm not going to hate on it because it doesn't have a tilting screen because i knew it wasn't going to have one. I'm also not going to hate on it because it doesn't have continuous AF or IBIS because A: I don't need those features and B: I knew the camera was never going to have those features. I defend the camera against unrealistic people just because I am interested in the conversation relating to the camera and am quite dumb founded that people would find the need to get on a thread about a camera they do not want and does not meet their needs and start arguing about it. It's like me getting on the Sony A7III thread and ranting and raving about the fact that it doesn't do RAW or 10bit. Just sillyness! I'm trying to give people some perspective but people just want to bang on about why it doesn't have feature A or B that a mirrorless camera does have. One of my many faults is that I have low tolerance for stupidity, and there has been so much silly talk here that I felt the need to get involved. I mean, why the hell is Resolve not free? Why is Blackmagic not giving away it's products? Seriously. Can we talk about something constructive! I wonder if Emanuel or Dbounce works for Sony or Panasonic as they are constantly on here bashing the Pocket for not being what it was never intended to be. Why are they so intent on bashing a camera they have not interest in? Andrew has been very vocal about the X-T3 and despite years of interest in RAW, now thinks the X-T3 is the ducks nuts, does he now work for Fuji? So much ridiculousness....it's quite staggering.5 points -

I’ve done commercials with BMD cameras and Software that A LOT of people have seen, a lot more people than the people writing and viewing this thread, did I get a free camera? Can we put this shit behind us? I have P4K, T5 and 5 LPE6 at the moment. Probably rounded up to say 18002 points -
I mean, the thread title has Cinema Camera in it. It doesn’t say the price range or hybrid segment. Personally I’m not here to compare this to any other camera, just to evaluate how well it does this things it promises to do. It doesn’t promise to have ibis, af or take high quality stills so there’s little point in comparing those elements to cameras that do, of course they’ll win. Comparing it’s low light, clipping, audio etc is much more important. Rambling on about lack of features it never even hinted at having is almost as pointless and insightful as repeating the fact that it doesn’t fit in your pocket.2 points

Sony a7 III discussion

I have never got that either. I have found that in many instances Sony colours are more accurate to reality and in many cases people prefer Sony colours in blind tests. I think it comes down to People getting used to Canon and Nikon colours more over many years and liking what they knew. I have never had any issue with any brand for colours for stills and for video, I just use what I get from the camera. Besides, there is always a much bigger difference in what I see between the various computers, monitors, TVs I look at stuff on.2 points -

It's frustrating for us as well, because we click the link out of curiosity and then find it completely irrelevant. So if you're going to link to other sites, explain what it is you're linking to and paste the URL in separately so we can see what site we'll be lead out to. Thank you.2 points -

The crop 1.8x is maths, and reality has yet to be measured - I'll compare it to the C500 with the same lens, and to 1.5x APS-C cameras and other stuff we know the exact crop of and show visually how it compares. I said in the article that it may even be doing a 4096 pixel wide sensor readout to maintain the 1.74x crop of the 5D Mark IV in Ultra HD. Takes that, and downsamples to 3840 pixels wide, rather than crops more into the image. We don't know for sure, but when you're in 1.6x crop mode, it certainly doesn't FEEL like 1.8x crop when you hit record.1 point -

People infer it is hard to get good outcome with the Pocket. I see exactly the opposite. No experience with it yet. The idea I get from there is that you won't need to struggle with highlights in order to have them under control. The absence of artifacts, moiré, etc. For the price too. Clean low light performance, but also pleasant filmic noise where happens. High standard codecs (let alone BRAW when will arrive) will keep away the usual 8-bit macroblocking we tend to see from low bit rate. Aside the fact you won't easily find that film-like look unless going to post with other digital acquisition tools (when not much limited to below 10-bit), count on it ; ) Not to mention all the stuff this brand has gotten us used to it. Don't tell me the price range is irrelevant... LOL ; -) There's no other similar offer in the segment and that's nice to know. A good reason to demand top service from the manufacturer. Business policies related, as well. In a word, a no-brainer : -)1 point -

OliKMIA reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Yes so that is in reference to the firmware development partnership for the 4K Leica cameras - SL, CL, Q (ok that is not 4K but hardware, firmware and sensor are pretty much the same as the SL). Yeah, just sounds like Olympus wants to sell their own lenses for their full frame system and not have competition from Panasonic and Sigma undercutting them on price or bringing out very similar optics. I can't count the number of times I have nearly bought an Olympus Micro Four Thirds lens only to decide to go for the similar Panasonic one, or visa-versa! Olympus will have to bear the added costs of developing their own mount and of course it greatly restricts the number of optics available for their system at launch, but there are upsides to this approach too. That is if they DO enter full frame, which is far from confirmed! In manual focus it's a very good system, thanks to the detailed live-view and huge EVF, plus M-mount adapter, or others. Leica's native SL lenses are too chunky for me. That 24-90 is nuts. Also I think it needs more film profile choices. There's only one And I prefer the M9's colour science, from that Kodak CCD. The SL is a bit squeaky clean and modern, and it needs that Leica 2008 colour mode, plus a M typ240 mode, so we have the choice of modern or a more film-style look, which Leica did THE BEST out of anyone with the older M cameras.1 point -

Thanks for your honesty. I originally came here to discuss the camera I had pre-ordered as I saw John Brawley was active on here. Then, when I received the camera, I came here to share information as well as find things out from others. If talking a lot about your new camera and answering questions on it comes across as trying to sell it, then so be it but I'm not in the business of selling cameras. It also seems that if you like a camera and make perfectly valid points about it, you are a fanboy? I just don't get it here. Shooter sounded confused about Resolve and so I tried to help but does going out of your way to help someone these days mean you are trying to sell them something? Sad times! I've made a few posts on other threads recommending Sony cameras but again, I'm not selling Sony either. I am based in Melbourne, Australia which is where BMD are also based. I know Andrew suspects I might work for BMD but I can assure you I don't. While I am so far liking the camera a lot, if I had worked at BMD and had any involvement in the camera, I would not have let it go out the door without a tilt-able screen. Is it a deal breaker for me? No, but I can't understand why they would put a nice, sharp 1080p screen on a camera that you couldn't use all the time. I haven't been able to post on BMCuser because my account activation hasn't been completed. Thanks to a few users here who have PM'd me, that can soon change and you'll see the back of me. After a few weeks off from work, I'm looking forward to getting back to it. Too much pointless computer time sucks me in to discussions that I usually like to partake in but don't have the time for. Would have loved to have informative conversation about this camera but this forum doesn't seem to want to support good, informative conversation.1 point -

So by your theory, BMD should have taken away 10bit, RAW, XLR, etc from the Pocket4K because it is in a similar price bracket to cameras that don't have those features and to compete, it needs to copy the specs of the other cameras that are the same price. Do you really know anything about business? It's like comparing a $40,000 four wheel drive to a $40,000 sports car and complaining that the sports car got stuck on the steep, loose off road section and should have come with a four wheel drive mode because it was the same price as the 4x4. Utterly ridiculous! Two cars, same price, completely different categories. Generally, people don't categorise something just because it's the same price. If you do, then good luck to you. Many here would't compare the Pocket4K with a smartphone as while they might share a similar price, they were designed to do different things. Two decades in the industry should have taught you that. I know it has for me! All the best Emanuel.1 point -

So should the Panasonic Varicam, Red Helium, Arri Alexa, Sony F5, Kinefinity Mavo etc all offer IBIS and Tracking AF considering that they cost many thousands more? Surely they should be able to include AF in their high priced cameras considering my phone has it right? For the price of an Alexa, you'd also think they could include a front facing camera for taking selfies! Interestingly, did you know that the Sony A7III face tracking AF apparently doesn't work when using an external monitor or recorder? Now theres something not many people would have known when they bought the camera! And BMD are giving you other things that no other manufacturer are. Go and complain that Panasonic are not giving you a free, top of the line edit suite when you buy a GH camera. Go and complain that Sony are not giving you internal TC, Phantom power, XLR inputs, a 5" 1080p screen, RAW, internal 10 bit etc. Its all about priorities. If your priorities are more in line with what Panasonic are doing, buy a Panasonic. Self centred? Blackmagic are more open than any other camera manufacturer I know. Look, I like a conversation , that's why I'm here so if you want to continue, feel free to PM me but I'm not sure this is the right place to talk about a companies business models.1 point -

Policies and lack of vision? Andrew is upset because he didn't get an invite to an event. That is the only reason. Before that, he was looking forward to the camera despite knowing that there was no IBIS, No flappy screen and no usable AF. We all knew it! And which market are you pigeon hole-ing the Pocket4K into? It was never meant to compete with Hybrid or mirrorless cameras for travelling or your mobile phone like you keep comparing it to. Blackmagic have always been about Image quality and affordability and are the leaders of the market at this price point and even way above. They lead the market in image quality in a camera this small, they lead the market in image quality at this price, they have had 10bit in a tiny camera for years and mirrorless are only now catching up so how can you say they are 'old school and lack vision? I know this makes me sound like a BMD rep (as Andrew suspects) but It's just getting tiring here on the Pocket4K thread constantly hearing people complain about things that we have known all along and expecting the camera to be something it was never intended to be. @Andrew Reid I started a thread where people could complain all they like about how the Pocket4K isn't a mirrorless hybrid. It would have been nice to have all this complaint somewhere and kept this thread for useful information. Why did you close that thread? The conversation had already started on it. Now, for useful information here, people have to trawl through pages and pages of useless argument. Really disappointed in your 'my way or the highway' dictator-like attitude Andrew.1 point -
Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless talk hots up
plucas reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Surprisingly I find Digital IS pretty capable on the EOS R so far, with only a small extra crop but a LOT more steady compared to nothing... And competitive with IBIS... which is the most surprising thing. There aren't any artefacts from micro-jitter. It's pretty well locked down. Even pans work out well. IBIS on the Z7 is superior, but yes the floaty look is there and not very cinematic. The lazy temptation is there to use it and leave your handheld camera skills and tripod at home The Z7 IBIS seems in-between Sony and Panasonic for effectiveness, so it's an improvement on the A7 III but not as good as a GH5. I'd put the EOS R DIS in between the two as well. So actually more locked down than an A7 III. So far the EOS R is earning a bit of a niche for itself in my crowded camera bag. And that too is unexpected. It's a bit like a Canon GH5S. That also has a 1.8x crop and no IBIS. On the EOS R we have 480Mbit ALL-I or 120Mbit IPB codec so pretty similar to the GH5S as well. The 10bit vs 8bit issue is controversial and needs proper testing, because the Canon colours appear at first impressions to bridge the gap or even exceed how pleasing the 10bit files are on the GH5S. Even the ergonomics feel similar between the two cameras. Both have very similar screen quality, same articulated design, similar EVF resolution and size. The one area the GH5S is definitely superior is rolling shutter. But the EOS R is FAR superior for video AF and tracking. Also it is a 5D Mark IV standard full frame camera with your EF lenses for stills and 1080p, whereas the GH5S requires a Speed Booster to get close to that look and it is not 30MP. Stay tuned for my EOS R review tomorrow, it may surprise.1 point -

Vintage Jimothy reacted to Robert Collins for a topic
I certainly get the argument that there isnt much inherently wrong with the EOS-R that you cant find a work around. I can also see the rationale - for those with a large collection of Canon lenses - to say that it is the best mirrorless option out there for them. The problem as I see it, is that the 'shortfalls' in the EOS-R that we see seems to be indicative of a far greater 'structural' problem at Canon - I dont think they will magically disappear with the next mirrorless release. As I see it, cropped 4k, terrible rolling shutter and 120fps at 720p with no autofocus are mostly a function of the fact that both Canon's sensor tech and its processing tech is well behind the competition (and there are similar arguments for its stills.). (I dont really buy the 'avoid crippling' its Cinema argument.) As such, it just seems an incredibly big 'ask' to try and persuade anyone who isnt incredibly entrenched in their ecosystem to invest in a brand new mount.1 point -

The highlights in general are better on the pocket, but that’s mostly because of the RAW. Not sure I said the DR in general itself was miles ahead. I am going to run some tests in better lighting and hopefully I’ll be able to share. Both great cameras.1 point
-
I have conducted a bunch of tests comparing shots between the XT-3 and the Pocket 4k, which unfortunately I can't share because they are of my wife and she won't let me post them online. I will see if I can do some shots of other folks whom are comfortable having video of them shared online. But for now I can give a bit of insight with my findings. The highlight retention/roll off of the Pocket 4k is miles ahead of the XT-3. Having the ability to have RAW, is also miles ahead of the XT-3. Both of these are obvious to me and I pretty much knew them going in. I think we all knew this. The colors straight out of the camera, again, blackmagic wins. So is the obvious choice the Blackmagic Pocket 4k? No. Keep reading... After all that, the combination of a more organic/slightly softer looking image and much MUCH smoother motion cadence of the Fuji XT-3, make it look more cinematic, with less work. When both cameras are out of harsh light, I prefer the video of the XT-3. Just the way the movement looks is immediately apparent and almost jarring. I know a lot has been talked about whether the pocket 4k is the same sensor of the GH5 or not, personally I am not here to say it is or it isn't, but the actual movement (motion cadence) reminded me of my old GH5. You can soften the video all you want, add grain, but tweaking motion cadence is not an easy thing. So I really value the way the motion looks. With both arguments out there, I still don't see it as a clear choice for the XT-3 or Pocket 4k, unless you start factoring what you want out of it. If you do gimbal work, the XT-3 is hands down a better choice with its great auto focus. If you need RAW, then you don't even need to read or bother with your choice and I am not sure why you even read this far, the Pocket 4k is your choice. Screen on the pocket 4k is amazing, fujis is small and harder to use. But, you can use a small Ninja on the Fuji and record prores. With the Pocket 4k, unless you are using CFAST, you will need to mount an SSD on a cage. So with either one, chances are you will have either an ssd or monitor on top of it. I prefer having a monitor on top, because thats an added bonus of easier to focus and choose angles. Here is where I stand. I shoot video and do photography, pretty much 50/50. The specs of the pocket 4k blow my mind. They are amazing. But, for what I do, I am not sure if its worth having 2 cameras, 1 for photography and 1 for video, which means more gear I need to carry - as opposed to just my Fuji to do both.I bought the pocket 4k to see if it would blow my mind. It has impressed me, but has not blown my mind. I lose some, no RAW, not as great of a color science, and far better codecs. But, I also gain some with the Fuji, smaller body, easier to balance on gimbal, autofocus for gimbals, and no need to lug around 2 cameras and more lenses for each system. This last argument is whats making it harder to just keep both. The fuji regardless is staying, because its my main photography camera. Its a keep the fuji or keep both choice for me. I am going to do more tests once the sun goes down a bit and see how they fair outside of the harsh light I tested today. Right now, I am leaning toward sending the pocket 4k back, just to simplify things. When I have too much gear , over stimulated/whelmed with choices - I end up NOT being creative. This is why I have always liked hybrids as a photographer, the camera is always on you and ready to shoot video when you need. Decisions, Decisions... I am open to answering any questions on either camera.1 point

This is the big thing, everybody is comparing it to the D850 best in class AF. I mean it is better than anything except the D5 and perhaps Cano 1dx in the whole wide camera world. Now some would say it is Nikon pricing, but if does the D850 has nearly full frame AF coverage, which would make z7 a much better camera for studio, landscape, portrait work. I could even add for general people photography where you don't have to recompose everytime. Then you can add the video, video AF, IBIS etc which are either very bad or not even present on the D850. We don't know, a millimeter might make a big difference in IBIS, the other thing that I think is more important is the perhaps the mount size and flange distance, the rays are supposed to be straighter when hitting the sensor, so sensor has to move less could be another reason. That's just speculation, but in the end from some report it works much better than the Sony.1 point

Seemed like a mixed bag. Some third party didn’t work at all (yet), some were almost as good, some worse. The Nikkor 105 f1.4 and 85mm 1.4 performed basically the same. Its worth noting that he’s comparing it to one of the fastest AF cameras on the planet. I wish he would have included a Z lens as a baseline for the Z7. Also wonder how it would compare to older cameras like the D800/D700/D610 et c. Mirrorless has come a long way to even be comparable to a new DSLR. Still some ways to go.1 point

Its also a huge boost at a low price for anyone with an LS300 as it allows you to record 4K60p without the additional bulk of something lile the Ninja Assassin. More signifcantly, I can see a lot more 5" loupes becoming available because of this monitor so it can be used as an EVF, which means it can also overcome the LS300's achilles heel of it having an absolutely abysmal EVD and flimsy LCD fold out monitor.1 point
