  3. The difference between my one and the V2 (which after much confusion appears is the one they are selling off) is that the V2 can control the aperture and focus from the interface unit directly without having to use the controller. Do I believe its worth the hassle? I hate recommending things definitively but if you can find a focal reducer that offers electronic focus control of a Canon lens on a Blackmagic Pocket4K for anything less than this one then I'd probably buy it Unless you want to get involved in rail mounted focus systems there is just no other way currently that you can do focus control on an adapted Canon lens on the Pocket4K. Now that might well change in the future (if JVC can do AF on my metabones EF adapter then I see no reason why BM can't) but right now I can't see another way with any other adapter. I have no idea how much the import duty will be for you but if it doubles the price then it is still very good value for money. Put it this way, the Metabones Smart Adapter I've got that cost double that can only do aperture control with this camera. The bigger issue seems to be getting hold of one at all in Europe, so if you and @Anaconda_ really want one then the 2 options would be : 1) Get a friendly US forum member to order it and sent it on. I'm going to volunteer @webrunner5 for this or 2) Buy mine off me for €500 now that I've shilled the fuck out of it !

  4. Lovely example of the out of camera colour. Personally I much prefer the natural look to the LUTs which have been thrown onto the footage. I'm sick of seeing M31 and Deluts personally. It makes all cameras look the same, which is perhaps the point. The ease with which you can obtain a pleasing, cinematic yet naturalistic look is what separates the men from the boys, in my personal opinion. It's why we all love Canon colours, Alexa, Blackmagic, and now Fuji.

  5. ser from Saturday's wedding. The predominant camera is the X-T3 on the gimbal. There's also quite a few shots in there from the Pocket 4K, a couple of from our trusty C200 (taking a back seat to the other cameras) and one from the 5D mkIV. Impressions of the two cameras after two weddings: 1. The X-T3 is the perfect camera for the Zhiyun Crane 2. It is perfectly balanced even before turning the gimbal on. This wedding I used it entirely with my new 18-55mm at the wide end as I wanted the IS. The 2. The Blackmagic Pocket 4K is something else. Utterly magnificent. With the Voigtlander 25mm constantly on this camera it produces an image that is unmatched by any of the other cameras I own. You just need to be in a position that allows you time to compose and focus. Thankfully the Voigtlander is great for quick manual focusing. The menu system is intuitive and easy and the touch screen makes changing settings a dream. The one chief drawback is that the battery life is awful. You shouldn't expect more than 40 minutes on constantly shooting. So I have about 15 LP-E6 batteries handy just in case. They both compliment the other very well and I will be keeping both for my uses. Fergus & Rachel Teaser.mp4 Fergus & Rachel Teaser.mp4 Fergus & Rachel Teaser.mp4

  8. The problem with IBIS is that there is a lot going on under the hood with a lot of cameras regarding lens corrections that can often end up interacting in a negative way when you add the additional corrections from IBIS so its by no means a magic bullet and is dependent on the camera and lens combo on an individual basis. What I would like to see is manufacturer's doing an integral SteadXP type of option where instead of making the corrections in real time (which are permanent and destructive) the camera instead writes the parameters for the corrections it would have made within the video file. That way they could then have a plug in where you could fine tune the correction in post. With regard to the Tamron, like every other adapted lens with the Pocket4K, it offers no AF whatsoever from the camera. *** So, in this case, all of the focus control of it is driven from the LensRegain handle. It actually more practical this way anyway as it means you can do focus control whilst its recording without disturbing the camera as even with the lightest touch you are going to cause a vibration using the touch screen to do it. Plus, of course, you get the advantage of being able to use the A/B memories on the grip to do pulls to with the transition speed being constantly variable on the controller as you are doing them. It also means that when you swap lenses you don't have to mess about re-aligning the focus gears and recalibrating the lens as you do with a servo based system, plus of course you don't have to have a rail system to mount it on. If you then got a gimbal, you could of course just mount the controller to the base of that or an accessory bar and still use it. With regard to the IS on the Tamron, its perfectly adequate for its focal length and combined with the controller grip mounted as I have it for support its actually a pretty neat system. At the price they were flogging the LensRegain off for (and still are in the US) and how cheap that lens is used, the whole thing amounts to an f1.8 24-70mm equivalent stabilised lens with electronic follow focus for less than £300. More than enough money left over for a decent tripod *** If anyone has an EF adapter that DOES work for AF with the Pocket4K then I'm all ears.

  11. I have lately been experimenting with video capture settings on the NX1 and I have been exploring a method of increasing dynamic range which I don't think has yet been touched upon. It's really no big deal and I am not making any great claims but it may be of interest to some so I produced a quick video How-To. Take is as fun, I have done very little real-world testing and it may be of little use, but over to you.

  12. Perhaps an Idea for a topic about films only taken with Iscorama 36 and Iscorama Cinegon? This one is taken with the Samsung NX1 and Voigtländer Ultron 40mm f2.0. Anamorphic lens the Iscorama Cinegon. It was difficult to focus with minus 5 degrees Celsius and strong wind. More to follow, or who next?

    HDMI and USB Issue

One of the biggest annoyances about the NX1 for me is that the HDMI output and USB recharging barely work together. If anyone else has overcome this issue, please let me know. Essentially, if there is a USB cable attached to the NX1, but the cable is not attached to a powerbank when the camera is powered on, the HDMI output will not work at all. My ideal setup is to power the camera from a TalentCell powerbank, which also powers my monitor (fantastic solution, btw, it runs all day and can even be tethered to an AC outlet). To that end, I 3D printed a clamp that holds both an HDMI and USB adapter. It's sturdy and great for cable management. However, if I power on the camera without attaching the USB cable to the power bank first, the HDMI out will not output any signal at all. For example, if I power on the camera as it is seen above, with right angle adapters in place that go nowhere, then there will be no way to get an HDMI signal out of the camera--- I would have to power off, attach the USB cable to my powerbank, and then power the camera back on. Pretty much any other combination works perfectly: if the camera is powered on without the right angle adapters in place, no issues. I can even disconnect the USB cable after powering on the camera, and HDMI will continue to work. It really just seems to be an issue of whether there is a USB cable -to-nowhere at the moment that the NX1 is switched on. Has anyone else encountered this, or even better, overcome this?

  17. Or they could treat it like a cinema camera ??? Besides, we all know how that song about camera stabilisation went - "if you liked it then you should have put a rig on it".

  18. Well...its a strange thing with that particular lens. The LensRegain is only 1 stop but it reports it as f1.8 and my metabones reports it as f1.9 so its all a bit odd. Anyway, budget for 1 stop and you won't be disappointed ! Its great value at that price for the Pocket4K because - and again if someone knows different please chime in - the fact that there is nothing other than aperture control from smart adapters for it means that its the only way you are going to get focus control of Canon lenses on it without resorting to a follow focus system and all that that entails rig wise. Would I recommend it at the original price? Possibly not but if you can get one at the current price then its certainly a bargain. I think someone further up the thread said if they used PayPal as a checkout option it worked?

  22. IBIS is not a panacea. It is different than lens IS or a tripod. I like some lenses to have IS for run n gun and what not. It is very interesting that you suggest the cheap Tamron, how good is the IS? And the touch focus? The NX 16-50S is 2-2.8f, so it is wider, equally fast in the same focal lengths and a lot more tele, while its stabilization is very very good. 18-35mm is very limited for run n gun.

  23. I think its a bit of a double whammy in that gimbal options for the Pocket4K (as you can see from this thread and the separate one) are a bit sketchy at the moment as is the lack of IS on a lot of the lenses people are using. The Sigma 18-35mm has become pretty much the de-facto "standard" lens over the past few years and whilst it's lack of IS didn't really matter that much as the camera it was mounted to had IBIS and/or was on a gimbal, it really does matter when neither of those avenues are available. That's why I think people might want to consider options like that cheap Tamron and the like if they are going to be shooting handheld as, pragmatically speaking, the IS arguably matters more in that context than the pure optical performance advantage of something like the 18-35mm that doesn't have it.

  25. Dont forget the rolling shutter / overheat at a6300 / a6500, overheat / sunspot / bad battery life / poor AF with A7S II, The crappy 4K at fullframe with A7R II, the aliasing heavy 1080p with A7 II. Sony was bashed a lot in a lot of reviews But they overcome the major weaknesses with the third generation. Still not perfect, but much more value for the money and much less pain in the ass comparing to previous generations. Actually i dont remember if there was major problems with GH3/GH4. Maybe they were perfect? ?

  26. Can't believe you've all forgotten about my prototype electronic variable ND from the summer. If I'd known you were all prepared to pay $1200 for one I probably would have prioritised it a bit more! Shall we say $800 and pretend that cardboard and electrical tape are the new carbon fibre? Joking aside, its not some massive undertaking for a company to make one as the technology is readily available and fairly cheap.

Yes sorry I got confused with the OP asking for multiple GPU use. Resolve should use the GPU for rendering if it's configured correctly but I think playback is CPU based. I've spent ages optimising the various settings in Resolve to optimise performance while watching the resource monitor in Windows.

Not sure that is correct. The Studio version can exploit multiple GPU's where the free version is limited to a single GPU. A good article on hardware options for Resolve can be found here: https://www.pugetsystems.com/recommended/Recommended-Systems-for-DaVinci-Resolve-187/Hardware-Recommendations And this for a good comparison of GPU's using real world video editing scenarios: https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/DaVinci-Resolve-14-NVIDIA-GeForce-vs-AMD-Radeon-Vega-1213/ If you're not bothered about Premiere, the AMD graphics cards are a little cheaper than the GTX series and still a good option.

    Best gimbal for Pocket 4K?

...this is GH5S, but wanted to point out it would be great if there’s s gimbal which also comes with a strap in mind. Some harness like there is for dual cameras would be a great addon for heavier setups. Regarding Pocket 4k, I bet there’ll be rather soona gimbal built around it.

  33. Well the Nikon Z7 is a $3500 pro camera. Does Max really think the people who buy it are going to use it on the default settings out of the box and not even explore the different automatic WB presets which would have fixed Bart Simpson and the other picture styles such as Flat which would give more control of colour in post? It's not a mom & pa's camera. It's a professional mirrorless camera and he's testing it like a bloody iPhone or a point & shoot. It's just an excuse for lazy testing and gettin' it out quick. Sadly he has 100,000s views and the good guys who WAIT do not. That's what happens when you have no editorial control over a network (YouTube) and promote stuff based on FIRST and VIEWING STATS.

Ripple was also the first course that I found on a cursory Google search and their free classes have been brilliant so paying for their full course sounds like a good place to get started. @capitanazo (your English is great) @kye thanks for taking the time to post, the LiftGamma forum recommendation looks great, too. 36. The mystery of why Aputure were selling the Lens Regain products off cheap looks to have been solved as they have now released a Version 2 model. From what I can see, the only difference is you can control it from the interface unit as well as the grip and it is now back up to €682 I guess this means that the original won't be coming back in stock in the EU store but its still available in the US store if you want to grab one. As an FYI for anyone looking to shoot handheld with the Pocket 4K who can get hold of a Lens Regain, I have used a cheap DJI Osmo cold shoe adapter bar to mount the Aputure control grip to the camera. (Ignore the small tripod in the shot obviously as it was just used to stand it up for the picture) It makes it a very nice stable little setup and makes holding it at the distance you need to because of the screen far more comfortable. Ergonomically, it works very well too having all the lens control (including the focus memories) in your left hand and the camera control in your right. It is a good halfway house, for me at least, of having more stability and control without having to start rigging it with rails and a follow focus. Incidentally, the lens that is on it is a Tamron 17-50 f2.8, a very underrated and quite lightweight lens which I've had for years and you can pick up used for about £150. On the Lens Regain it becomes f1.8 with more or less a FF equivalent FOV of 24-70mm so it is ideal as general purpose lens anyway but the icing, of course, is the image stabilisation which makes this whole rig really effective for handheld shooting. The only downside is that it isn't exactly silent when it is being focused...

  38. I don't know what he means in the video, to me the EOS R does NOT get sharper with the sharpness setting, sure it adds a halo and increase the local contrast making letters stand out more, but I don't see any indication of "size of blur" getting smaller/more detailed. Sure it kinda looks sharper and does make it easier to show some detail but not really fixing the softness. You can see the outline of the Chinese? letters around the 4:08 mark on the battery grip box get more defined while on the X-T3 (without halos mind you) you can see they have detail inside of them. So I guess my take from it is, yeah it does not lack sharpness as in halos and edge contrast since I really don't like that. But it sure does lack detail/resolution compared to what other offers without being overly sharpened (in this case X-T3). Now if this is the megapixel race of 4k or not I'm not sure, but cramming too much content all the way to nyquist do mess up a lot of scaling algorithms and do become a hassle at times, with audio you want the resolution to be way higher than the content so I don't see the problem doing the same for video if you know what you are doing. I'm kinda balancing between "yeah it's soft and lack details but" and "I want that 1:1 pixel detail because reasons" So is the real resolution about 3k vs 4k(example)? and does it matter at the end of the day? If you had quick turnaround and uploaded camera file in 4k to youtube, do the 1080 being scaled by youtube look better than similar X-T3 shot? How does it look like on a phone?

  39. Taken from the main P4K thread: https://tilta.com/2018/10/29/first-look-at-the-camera-cage-for-bmpcc-4k/ Tilta are going to release a V-mount base to sit under the camera. They're also releasing a grip to hold Sony batteries and another thing for Sony batteries to sit under the camera. @BTM_Pix - Is it not better to trust the power bank's LEDs over the BMD % ? Let it run past 0% and see if the power bank gets down to 1 light, or if the camera shuts off before then.

    X-T3 or Pocket 4K?

None of these recent camera releases has persuaded me to parts ways with the GH5, here’s why: - Ergonomically awesome for video with loads of custom functionality. Feels MADE for video. - 10 bit 4:2:2 codecs are very strong. - MFT sensor, while Speedboosted, is easier to focus than a full frame sensor. Very adaptable. - Great battery life. - IBIS is excellent. - EVF and Flip Out LCD are awesome. - @Sage Alexa conversion makes it a different camera. - Anamorphic modes. - Monitor LUT - super useful! I’ve tried the AF on a gimbal with the GH5 and it works quite well. Not Canon or Sony level, but decent. Theres features in the other cameras that look appealing, but the way I view it, how much will it change my videos? I’ve opted to spend and upgrade my lighting to a full Aputure setup and camera movement. These things directly influence the picture more and invite increased skill and knowledge in composition.

  42. Nice topic. This one i did with a modified Isco 36 (now cine Iscorama mkII). I used different taking lenses (voigtlaender 40mm 2.0, Nikon 50mm 1.8, 58mm Helios and i think there was a 80mm Nikkor as well) I used the Gh5 on a Letus gimbal in 4:3 full sensor mode. So the final frame was a 2:1 ratio in 4K. Which gave me a lot of freedom for reframing.
