Color science
frontfocus and 2 others reacted to stephen for a topic
There are no colors yet in RAW. What to test then ? The color science of the developing programs or the skills of the person working with it ? For photography everybody is using RAW for serious work but yet argue about BETTER color science which affect only JPG and is different for different profiles and is subjective at the end. Better doesn't mean accurate. Better is very subjective. In this part he's right IMHO. For video however it's different. For those mirroless / DSLR cameras we don't have the choice of using RAW video. We still can tweak the colors but are much more limited, white balance is backed in. Tweaking the colors the way we like them is not that easy in video as to take a RAW file and fix the white balance. Getting the colors close to the final edit straight off the camera for video may save tons of time and effort. So don't agree with him when he throws video in the argument but does only test photo.3 points -

That's like buying a laptop, but the keyboard doesn't work and instead of trying to fix it with the manufacturer, you just carry around an external keyboard with you. Yes it'll work, but it it's far from ideal when you bought it as an all in one solution. If I'm recording externally, I could just as well use an GX80.2 points

GH5 to Alexa Conversion

So I just got my Mavic 2 Pro today, and decided to try the GHA conversion on it, in 10 bit mode of course, to see what would happen. I used the Cine-D pre, and then Linear. I still have to dial in my Mavic settings a bit more, but the lut seemed to work! Obviously not perfectly, but not bad. Now to get some better footage and more practice with this drone!2 points -

So it's been a little over a month since I purchased my first FujiFilm X-T3 body. About two weeks after purchasing the first body I became convinced that this camera was very special. It was fun to shoot with. It reignited my desire to shoot stills. When it came to video the X-T3 seemed more than capable. I decided to refine my lens collection, adding the 23mm F2, 35mm F2, 16mm F1.4 and 56mm F1.2. Later I add the magnificent MKX18-55mm T2.9. All of these lenses performed to my highest expectations. I can tell you after this short period of owning these cameras that they can capture some truly lovely images. The in camera profiles are great and very inspiring to work with. The whole experience is really quite wonderful... well, that is it was. I am getting rid of the whole system. Why? Well, the second body decided to quit. The screen froze up and would just blink. A quick call to Fuji tech support revealed that the hardware had failed. I called to get a return authorization, which was granted. I decided not to go for an exchange, instead opting to wait and see how the first body held up. Today, I went out to shoot some pictures for a project we are doing. Upon arriving at the location I grabbed the X-T3 out of my bag and flipped the switch to power it on... NOTHING! Absolutely nothing. No lights, no screen lighting up, no power up at all. I tried different batteries. Still nothing. I tried pulling the battery and holding down power, then re-inserting the battery and attempting to power up again. Still nothing. Finally I tried the one thing I knew would work. This technique has never failed me.... I went home and grabbed my Canon 1DXMk2. Needless to say the shoot was completed. But the Fuji's are paper weights. I'm done with FujiFilm. It's all going back. It's packed up... I will not buy another one. In my experience they are not fit for serious use. Heck, they are not fit for even casual use. I had spoken highly of them in the past, but this experience with not one... but two bodies failing is enough for me. Lesson learned.1 point

Mainly all I'll do to adjust my video image is use the color curves tool. Crush/raise highlights/shadows and adjust the red/blue/green channels. I'll also add saturation to the entire image sometimes. Thats all I really know how to do in Vegas Pro. Lightroom seems to have more options but I don't usually use them, I don't really do photography outside of just for fun. This is why I want a good image out of camera lol.1 point -

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

Various hybrid camera owner here. Tell me how I can do this with any of my camera's OEM bats. 30-50 is what I typically experience. I think the Black Magic camera is a fine value. You don't want it, don't get. No need to make excuses. All hybrid cameras shooting video are a compromise.1 point -
I don't find the battery life a problem (it's more like 30mins BTW) and if you want RAW, ProRes, 4k60p and dual ISO without any other unnecessary features then I think BM did an excellent job esp on the UI and priced it at an amazing level. No camera is perfect but not having a perfect camera is not a reason you can't shoot excellent footage - It seems a universal reason to moan on forums though....1 point

I don't find it disappointing at all. What similar camera you have for the price? I get more than one solution for everything you've just mentioned... Every single one of them... This camera is still a milestone. You just need to know how to shoot with it : -)1 point

Color science

For me even the way the RAW files look on default Photoshop (ACR) settings is a factor in my decision to like that camera or find it a completely pain in the ass. Leica M9 for instance - bang. Perfect. Barely need to touch the RAWs in Adobe Camera Raw. Sony Raw - eh. Honestly most photographers do simple changes. Contrast, curve maybe, saturation, that's about it. They don't go fine tuning individual hues or luma / sat curves and mess with advanced colour channel settings or profiles. They just want it quick and easy. For me it is a complete mystery why the manufacturers cannot grasp this simple point! Sony's RAW files look so flat when you open them. It's another stupid default setting decision. Stephen is right above - that the colour science is now in the software and not the camera, apart from the fact you are seeing raw sensor data - so it's representative of the hardware in that sense. And he is definitely bang on the money to say Tony throwing video into his RAW colour science (actually just a white balance test) is total nonsense and misleading bullshit.1 point -
haha this is definitely a meme format now Yes this was the solution, thank you1 point

FujiFilm X-T3 - Thoughts After One Month

I have plenty of AIS/AI lenses that are ready to fit right on the FTZ adaptor, and my 50mm f1.2 will be a lot easier to focus on mirrorless than my DSLR. Novoflex adaptors are ready already for most mounts, and much cheaper ones will be along as soon as demand ramps up.1 point -

webrunner5 reacted to Snowfun for a topic
Some of the 3d (h4v) photographs are truely extraordinary. By no means perfect but an astonishing experience. They genuinely capture a scene in a way not previously possible with this level of convenience. Biggest problem is that it’s not possible to share them or view them on anything other than the phone. Not sure how that will be addressed. Not sure I understand why there are so many negative if not vitriolic reviews.1 point -

They try everywhere to stop you. I have been challenged several times even in Texas. In most Texas cities, there is an unlimited right to film or photograph in a public place. But there are numerous busybodies out there who come up and ask, "Do you have a permit?". My first reply now is, "And you are...?". If they actually have some authority, I answer yes and refer them to a city official who actually knows what the rules are. If they interfere with my process, I call the police. If the police give me trouble, I refer them to their police legal advisor, which every Texas city has. When a logo is prominent in the background, I take it out in post. First, it seems like common courtesy, and second, why should I provide free marketing?1 point

Color science
austinchimp reacted to stephen for a topic
IMHO Tony actually did a very good test/survey. Blind tests are rare. Certain parts may be questionable but general conclusions are valid IMHO and quite revealing: 1. Color perception and preferences are subjective. Both for professionals and nonprofessional viewers. 2. Brand loyalty skew personal opinions even more. 3. Slight variations of colors usually gets unnoticed by the general public(viewers) and even by professionals. We start to see the differences when we compare different cameras / images. Quite true IMHO. While there is definitely science in colors, personal preferences rules at the end. There is nothing scientific in personal preferences. So saying that camera A has better color science than camera B is somewhat wrong, when we discover that BETTER is subjective. Better color does not mean scientifically correct colors it just means colors we personally like and prefer. A blind test just prove how off those personal preferences may be. So it's correct to say better colors FOR ME. Does it means we do not need LUTs or adjusting colors or use Andrew's EOS Pro Colors settings? Are color adjustments really just one click of the button away? Of course not. Getting the colors we want or like may be quite time consuming in both photo and video. If we like the colors of our videos strait off the camera and want to leave them like this, then fine. If we prefer the colors of camera A better than camera B, and have camera A then lucky us. But if we don’t like the colors straight off the camera or want some special colors and/or vision then we have to tweak them. In video this can be quite laborious and time consuming. Color correction and grading is a well payed profession. If somebody already have presets that tweak, adjust the colors the way we like it, well bring them on. He did the laborious part and those presets will save us quite a lot of time and work in post. So Tony is right about the subjectivity but wrong when saying one click and white balance will do it for most of us. Unfortunately not that easy and simple. IMHO he gave the example of white balance adjustment to show that all cameras have good RAW images to start with and differences are not that big.1 point -
GH4 color profiles
gelaxstudio reacted to @yan_berthemy_photography for a topic
Hi @gelaxstudio You can simply do that through an HDMI output screen monitor. You can also use the Panasonic image app in the app store/play store, to see in live (use your phone/tablet) as a monitor. Unfortunately, there are no others ways. You can do server delivery, so each time you make a video or take a picture, it is directly sent to a server which will be stocked in your computer. Hope this helped.1 point -

Slider - "must have", or meh...?
Mark Romero 2 reacted to thebrothersthre3 for a topic
If trying to do a slider imitation with a gimbal you could always shoot in 60p and slow the footage down. You can get some pretty slow movements with practice. Having a lens with OIS helps and having a two handled attachment for your gimbal also helps. I could see it getting pretty tedious if you have to do a ton of slider shots though, might be easier to buy one at that point.1 point -
