  2. It was more me being sad that such an app doesn't exist. Instead of just moping around I put together a video of how I use the Panasonic App. Maybe someone in the loop will see that and decide it's a feature worthy of being in future cameras.

    Big is better!

Wonderful video. I'll probably subscribe to his channel. How about this for a future trick - Project the medium format lens onto ground glass and behind that put two vertical GH5S in 4:3 side by side. One can capture the full height and half the width of the left side of the image and one can do the same but for the right side. Merge in post for 8K medium format!? Sliding the camera along like his rig was a great experiment in the lab and result was beautiful, but tricky to use for anything that moves. Oh and by the way - his vintage projector is a thing of beauty isn't it!?

  5. The difference is that YouTube has a mechanism for gathering revenue for the rights holders whereas Vimeo does not. Until they come up with a way of paying rights holders then their only option is to remove infringing material although their methods seem incredibly heavy handed. I don't think that anyone could really object if Vimeo just removed all infringing material but to remove every last trace of the user's account is far too drastic

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

That looks great @deathly_twig, I had a similar idea recently. It turns out you can "hack" the GX85 to enable Cine-D which was hidden in the firmware. I originally wanted one as a backup camera for photography, but the video on this thing ain't too bad, albeit 8-bit. So I picked up a used one for 300 bucks. The 16mp sensor may give it an edge in low light too? This is at 800 ISO. 8-bit PRE + Cine-D to V-Log PRE + GHa Main + luma adjustments:

  9. I can't for the life of me understand why cameras, pretty damn expensive ones, are so damn behind Smartphones for tech that it is crazy. Jesus it's like they are stuck in the year 2000?? It can't be a space issue, Christ most phones now are paper thin. And they new Apple ones you can get 512gb memory in them. Probably more than the buffer on most of these damn cameras have. I saw a review of the Nikon Z6, and hell it was bumping up on the buffer in Photo Mode all the time. WTF?

  10. The whole licence agreement of Panasonic from Leica for the L-series Cameras sounds curiously suspect. Because: 1. Not getting Olympus on-board has a Lot more to do with Olympus not being interested in Full Frame. It wouldn't take Olympus to figure that out after spending half a decade patenting all sorts of Full Frame lenses (I will read the literature again to see if it mentioned mount size or name). 2. Like Sigma (and others before it showed us), it is mostly quite simple to re-mount between various Full Frame lens mounts (unless obviously the mount size are enormously different). So it obviously didn't have to do with merely different mounts. Unless the Olympus mount had some seriously Path Breaking advantages over the Leica one (which seems unlikely, atleast until we hear more of that or until the 1st quarter of 2019 when Olympus' new enormous sized camera is revealed). 3. The Varicam and the Eva aren't using Full Frame Sensors or proprietary Panasonic mounts, which makes Panasonic cinema line-up the last to the full frame party (Blackmagic's prices are too low to count). Therefore Panasonic's high end cinema division also would be looking for a (non-Propreitory) new mount usable for Full Frame lenses for the Full Frame Varicam sensor (which should hopefully make it well before 2020). This may be a reason why Leica wants to edclusively make the Cinema lenses for Panasonic and Panasonic probably didn't wanna share the mount with Olympus. The whole M43 collaboration wasn't really a collaboration to begin with with various splattering of lenses and technologies between Panaspnic and Olympus. Also no proper roadmap. In the end Panasonic beat Olympus because Olympus' top end cameras didn't have enough video features to justify their price and Panasonic got the IBIS tech from Olympus, arguably the biggest advantage in Olympus cameras.

    DJI Mavic Pro II

In Europe it is 1499 vs 1699 in the DJI, but to count it against ones business tax you have to buy from a local shop, which currently is 1599 vs 1699, while with 1999 you can buy the Phantom with the controller (with the 5.5" 1000nits). and do not forget that noone can have just 1 battery. Maybe the Zoom is a better proposal, 1250€ currently.

  12. Blackmagic is Voodoo related. Super Magic. So I would think they got it right. Pretty magic for the price. All their stuff is a bargain for what you get. And if they called it Whitemagic they would be all white equipment, and we would have to buy Man Purses and wear Man Buns LoL.

I don't see a problem with the size of the pictures, and hell I am 71 years old LoL. Sure bigger would have been nice. But they are bigger than Instagram stuff that most people look at these days. Now I am looking at them on a 30" monitor, not my cellphone. I think he did about as good a job you can do with that many different cameras. How many people can even get their hands on all those cameras at once. Setting them on the factory settings is the only fair way you can test. 90% of everyone that buys one of those cameras never changes crap on them. Let alone shoots Raw. Not everyone in the world has the skill most of the people on here have, especially on the video side of them. Most people set it in dummy mode and away they go. And the Manufacturers all know that doing a factory reset gets the camera back to how the the average person wants the output to look like for them, or they would not have bought the camera to start with.. Auto or Program Mode what ever you want to call it these days is really pretty damn good. Most cameras now have really good WB and OOC colors. Heck I even do Auto my self at times for photos when I am in a hurry. Not far off from what I would set other than maybe aperture. Heck even Auto ISO is great now that most cameras are good at low light these days.

  15. With the free 14 I would have some crashes sometimes (not an issue because I save regularly). With free 15 I basically never have crashes and I do a ton of things on my computer at once. In the end though it's free! haha, how could you complain?...

  16. Hi Andrew, This is really encouraging. Excellent work! How does this work with an external recorder? Do your Z-Log profiles allow video to output at full 4:2:2 10-bit color depth over HDMI? What (stock) control over sharpening do users have with in a 10-bit N-Log over HDMI scenario? In order to create one's own profiles, is it a matter of using Nikon's Picture Control Utility 2? I have a Z6 on order, so I'm immensely curious... Thanks for your expertise!

  17. I think that only GH line have 4:3 output throw HDMI. I shoot anamorphic video with G80 and only 16:9 have HDMI live video output. So is a sh##, i have to focus/framing in 16:9 video with external monitor and then change to 4K Photo mode, to shoot 4:3 blind video (without monitor output).

  18. So which is the most accurate? By manual WB are you using a grey card/exp disk or just setting both cameras to the same Kelvin and Green/magenta tint values?

  19. Not to me. Resolve is a very demanding software, as much as is powerful, that means that you must have a clean install : no BS apps working in background - Drivers up to date. I may have maybe one or two crashs a week, and I use Resolve everyday. Of course it’s not perfect, but How can it be ? Blackmagic add a ton of new features at every update, has included Fairlight and Fusion in the internal process, that makes Davinci Resolve the most complete and powerful video Editor software on the market. And the more promising as well, since the support team is listening every users request.

The proper test for photos should be how does your software of choice develop your raw files. Yes, raw files can be manipulated but the development you get from lightroom very much represents, if you are using canon, the canon look (or if you are using another manufacturer - then that manufacturer). I don't think comparing the default jpeg profile means anything because literally no one will be shooting full frame cameras like that. The program process the raw for you then you edit. I can only make soony look like canon if I know what the end point is - and I would need a canon for that. The people on here who actually think there is any validity to this test should actually take it: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScDnq2nCYioH628uZXG_oVevanWlAeX0w8wRPXEFlls3aRq6g/viewform Look at how small the pics are - it is a joke. The bigger joke is thinking that this applies to video as well.

  21. Resolve is the future. Even if Abobe Premier matches Resolve’s features, their subscription sales model is not for me. I bought my Resolve Studio dongle with my BMCC a few years ago and it keeps getting better without any upgrade fees so far - a fantastic end user experience IMHO. I thought the video was well done, but you can tell the Abobe staff is in their comfortable bubble of branding that “we are the best”. I can’t blame them, it’s a nice gig if you can get it and they might as well enjoy it while they can, because it ain’t gonna last forever. Adobe lost me when they stopped selling and started renting their software. I pretty sure I am not the only person who is stuck on the last version of Adobe CS they purchased and have moved on alternative software out of economic necessity or rebellion against Abode’s evil empire. The thing about Empires is that they always come to an end when they become corupt and exploit and abuse their power...

    DJI Mavic Pro II

After watching and downloading a lot of footage, I’ve decided to go Phantom 4 Pro instead. There’s just something missing from the Mavic 2, it’s not a P4P in a smaller package. Maybe DJI gimped it in some way, but I prefer Phantom footage. I will be using the P4P professionally to shoot tourism promo videos and photos. IMO it’s worth the extra size and weight for the better IQ, especially since I’m in a pretty visible position that may lead to other work outside my main gig. Ironic since I’m shooting on the ground with the a73 and some small/light lenses like the 1635/4 instead of the GM’s. But I’m just not feeling the Mavic. cheers Chris

  23. Basically you have no idea what kind of deranged setup someone is going to be viewing on. Slight browser differences are likely to be the least of the problem. If you are lucky enough that a viewer is watching on a large desktop monitor (as opposed to a phone or smooth motion tv) with no overscan and not set to some weird 'movie' preset with the brightness too high and the sharpness to the max, then to have the only problem be a slight browser difference is really not much of an issue. So its best not to worry about it.

For me even the way the RAW files look on default Photoshop (ACR) settings is a factor in my decision to like that camera or find it a completely pain in the ass. Leica M9 for instance - bang. Perfect. Barely need to touch the RAWs in Adobe Camera Raw. Sony Raw - eh. Honestly most photographers do simple changes. Contrast, curve maybe, saturation, that's about it. They don't go fine tuning individual hues or luma / sat curves and mess with advanced colour channel settings or profiles. They just want it quick and easy. For me it is a complete mystery why the manufacturers cannot grasp this simple point! Sony's RAW files look so flat when you open them. It's another stupid default setting decision. Stephen is right above - that the colour science is now in the software and not the camera, apart from the fact you are seeing raw sensor data - so it's representative of the hardware in that sense. And he is definitely bang on the money to say Tony throwing video into his RAW colour science (actually just a white balance test) is total nonsense and misleading bullshit.

  33. https://www.eoshd.com/2015/07/shootout-of-the-4k-flagships-canon-1d-c-versus-samsung-nx1/ It's more to color than white balance, although corrected does put them more equal it's still very apparent the difference in rendering many shades of green vs just a few. I think the point was that 90% of ppl showed bias when shown brand names instead of numbers and answered differently because of this.

Your raw processor can make a huge difference to colour though. For example, Panasonic and Sony RAWS look far better in DXO PhotoLab than in Lightroom

  36. So I just got my Mavic 2 Pro today, and decided to try the GHA conversion on it, in 10 bit mode of course, to see what would happen. I used the Cine-D pre, and then Linear. I still have to dial in my Mavic settings a bit more, but the lut seemed to work! Obviously not perfectly, but not bad. Now to get some better footage and more practice with this drone!

That was a really valuable business opportunity, and an area no one was really focused on," Sud said. She made the case to Vimeo, and "because of that, I was given an opportunity to run the company." lol. Guys she is a visionary. They should start by updating their servers so people can stream 1080p let alone 4k. I didn't even need to go to Harvard Business School to come up with that idea! ?

  39. I've had this before as well! Turned out to be one browser was showing it according to the Display profile in Mac OS and the other one was using SRGB or doing it's own thing. At the time I had an LG 4K monitor and when I changed the monitor colour mode in the LG monitor menus to match Mac OS the problem went away and both browsers were the same. A lot of people do see colour differences between computers and that's why it causes so many arguments about camera colour!

  41. I agree with a lot of this. But it is user dependent. Looking at it from a Canon user perspective its Canon that push boundaries and offer innovative technology while Sony are holding back. It all depends on who you ask, no right or wrong. But if someone makes a review saying that they are willing to live with the missing features and shortcomings of the A7iii thats ok. Just their opinion. If the same guy says the same thing about a Canon he is a payed idiot fanboy. But you are right, Sony gets a lot of flak for menus, skin tones, etc. But not their users in the same way that Canons do. Since I have a youtube channel with a fairly large number of comments from the average camera dudes on line and read alll of them. I get a pretty good picture of the over all tone. And rarely if not never do I see Sony, Panasonic or Fuji users called "paid", "idiots", "fanboys" etc. But a Canon and Leica users are receiving it daily. With Leica its easier to understand since it has so much to do with the price and the fact that you really need to be a photographer to "get" Leica, not just a camera dude. But Canon has products in all tiers and prices. Your right, it is an interesting discussion.

  44. Yes the menus are fantastic, the general control layout - I did not realise this until today when I finally put it in my hand - is lovely. Much nicer than I expected. Even the polycarbonate plastic construction doesn't bother me. If anything it's good, because it makes for a very lightweight construction. This is a big camera by mirrorless standards but a TINY and light on by pro video standards, let alone cinema RAW proportions. Yes there are baffling decisions going on but a lot of common sense too. I still do not like Blackmagic's launch strategy and initial shipping quantities, it is ridiculous to be tormented for months with a mix of teasing and social media hype - I almost went mad - but believe me it is worth the wait. Again like BTM says, far from perfect, or without quirks - but it is different to anything else I own and a worthy upgrade from the original - in fact it is SIGNIFICANTLY better than that first camera in every way. Something I did not realise until I actually turned up. I am going to have so many words to eat from this thread, I'll probably choke to death.

  46. So it's been a little over a month since I purchased my first FujiFilm X-T3 body. About two weeks after purchasing the first body I became convinced that this camera was very special. It was fun to shoot with. It reignited my desire to shoot stills. When it came to video the X-T3 seemed more than capable. I decided to refine my lens collection, adding the 23mm F2, 35mm F2, 16mm F1.4 and 56mm F1.2. Later I add the magnificent MKX18-55mm T2.9. All of these lenses performed to my highest expectations. I can tell you after this short period of owning these cameras that they can capture some truly lovely images. The in camera profiles are great and very inspiring to work with. The whole experience is really quite wonderful... well, that is it was. I am getting rid of the whole system. Why? Well, the second body decided to quit. The screen froze up and would just blink. A quick call to Fuji tech support revealed that the hardware had failed. I called to get a return authorization, which was granted. I decided not to go for an exchange, instead opting to wait and see how the first body held up. Today, I went out to shoot some pictures for a project we are doing. Upon arriving at the location I grabbed the X-T3 out of my bag and flipped the switch to power it on... NOTHING! Absolutely nothing. No lights, no screen lighting up, no power up at all. I tried different batteries. Still nothing. I tried pulling the battery and holding down power, then re-inserting the battery and attempting to power up again. Still nothing. Finally I tried the one thing I knew would work. This technique has never failed me.... I went home and grabbed my Canon 1DXMk2. Needless to say the shoot was completed. But the Fuji's are paper weights. I'm done with FujiFilm. It's all going back. It's packed up... I will not buy another one. In my experience they are not fit for serious use. Heck, they are not fit for even casual use. I had spoken highly of them in the past, but this experience with not one... but two bodies failing is enough for me. Lesson learned.
