My work (Tom Pawlow)
mirekti and one other reacted to thebrothersthre3 for a topic
I keep hearing how everybody just comments on trivial things and complains these days so I thought I'd go ahead and make a thread where I post my creative videos (maybe some of my paid stuff too). I make video's on a fairly frequent basis, so I thought it could merit a thread. Anyways here is a short I posted on youtube recently. I am liking the super short video format lately. Have a bunch of 1 minute short projects planned for this month (for the film riot competition).2 points -

Video was giving me Red flags. Just seems kinda fishy with some of these video comparisons showing one camera blowing another completely out of the water and other videos with completely opposite results. ? A7III lowlight test used Super 35 instead of FF, then used SLOG 3 for the low light test IN Super 35 Then they used improperly exposed SLOG 3(once again in Super 35 crop mode) indoors and zoomed in on the shadows. Pretty sure in 2018 everyone and their grandma knows to avoid SLOG 3 on the 8 bit Sony bodies. Okay but to be fair I knew going into this video with Armando and Potato Jet presenting that it would be loaded/unbiased in favor of Canon.2 points -
What Canon Rumors is up to
Thomas Hill and one other reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
Its very informative that Canon have a relationship with a site like that and then get their knickers in a twist with them about mention of Magic Lantern. So they'll happily contribute to the creation of speculation and fake news about their own products in order to keep people on the hook but actively discourage the awareness of actual facts about enhancing ones you may already own. Honestly, them having any sort of relationship with a rumour site is a pretty sad indictment of the way things are with regard to the chicanery of the camera business. If you can't even trust the sites that are actually set up for making shit up to actually make that shit up in an unbiased way then he game has gone!2 points -
Best gimbal for Pocket 4K?
Emanuel and one other reacted to Lenscamera for a topic
I like the Zhiyun weebill lab for it's small size, shape and weight. It would have been my perfect gimbal for the P4K if it balanced without counter weights and if the video transmission function worked with the P4K (This camera will benefit quite a lot from that functionality without it's tilted screen). But clearly at it's currently state it's not a match for the P4K. Zhiyun have to redesign or make a version for that camera. At this point it's either the more bigger Zhiyun crane 3 lab, Ronin S or Moza air 2. Moza air 2 is the cheapest of all 3 and so far works with the P4K. I hope Zhiyun can make a version of the weebill lab for P4k soon!2 points -

Filming at the olympics
zerocool22 and one other reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
I've shot the Winter Olympics as a freelancer so it isn't out of the question as long as you can meet the usual requirements of membership of a recognised professional sports journalism organisation such as AIPS and have a body of recently published work. The accreditation is via each country's Olympic comittee rather than centrally so you have to apply to the one in your country. As a freelancer you will almost certainly be required to produce a letter of assignment from a publication/broadcaster but this will vary depending on your individual country as will the number of slots available for each specific role (writer/radio/photo etc). There will also be some rights restriction aspects as well that will strictly define how you can use your content so you will need to make sure that you have that clarified precisely. I suspect that the more immediate hurdle for you might be the deadline to apply though as it may, as it has with the British association, already have passed.2 points -

Panasonic Abandoning M43
Aussie Ash reacted to Trek of Joy for a topic
That's the strength of m43 and where Panasonic and Olympus are failing. They're trying to take on FF with large $2000 bodies and bigger/faster lenses that cost far more than FF when you factor equivalency - this is enthusiast territory and FF is the $2000+ standard. Stabilization and class leading video specs, an advantage m43 had for years, is no longer enough when everyone else now offers the same. Plus FF is really pushing the envelope for mirrorless AF, m43 is sorely lagging behind. Personally, with FF, I carry lighter zooms because DR is just so good with the recent Sony sensors. I use fast primes for shallow DOF stuff and with Sony I carry the a6300 as a cheap/light backup. Chris1 point -

Thank you! Now that you mention it I agree, it probably would have worked better if the antagonist walked faster in that middle shot. The light that keeps turning on and off in the short lit that portion of the shot, though I did gel it as it was too harsh. The light that appeared to be coming from the PC was not from the PC. I used an open faced LED for that, which was diffused. There was also a light placed outside the window. I am glad it appeared natural, as that was the look I was going for. I shot it with a Fuji XT20, though I kept the ISO very low (200-400 I believe).1 point -

Actually most of the West (ironically) is living in this Orwellian Universe which people aren't even aware of. The Matrix is real. I see it all the time. The internet is just a tiny fraction of the stuff around. Atleast in Communist countries like Russia and China people KNOW IT. In most of Europe and the US, and most othwr parts of the world, people have been brainwashed for decades and centuries, and therefore unable to see anything that's in plain sight. They imagine that people who actually realise this, are conspiracy theorists. I am sure most people here too imagine that Andrew is imagining all this. Maybe they think he needs to change his beer brand or stop smoking up or something equally weird. I realised it long ago. When I first started using the net I researched on trojans (rats), and I suddenly realised that many organisations and groups are constantly spying on us and programming us in the process. There isn't much one can do to change it though.1 point -

I can't speak for other brands FF wise, but the ability on the Sony a7xx series cameras to have a s35 crop mode, and to have the Clear Zoom thingy with hardly any loss in quality, not counting better low light, DoF out of the box is pretty hard to beat once you have one. And the bodies are really as small as most m4/3 bodies. Particularly the older ones. I would go back for BiF, Sports stuff for the small long lenses, but that is pretty much the Only reason I would. I must admit I am spoiled by the Sony bodies and the FF look. Even the color science has gotten damn good on the newer ones. Not counting used they are cheap as heck.1 point -

Blackmagic Pocket 4K media & power thread -- the best alternatives
webrunner5 reacted to currensheldon for a topic
Yea - Because the Pocket 4K already got so much bigger, they should have gone all the way and just made it even a bit bigger, added internal NDs, and a real battery slot somewhere. The 5-inch screen is great, but 4-inches would be just fine. Even at $2.5k - $3.5k, that would be right in line with my ideal A-Cam (though, I guess then there isn't much differentiation between it and the Ursa Mini Pro). Perhaps they'll make an Ursa Mini Pro Mini soon. I look forward to the day when a manufacturer makes a C100 II-sized (or a bit smaller) 4k 60fps camera. A workhorse that you don't have to worry about power, screw-on NDs, overheating, etc and can still get a beautiful BM Raw esque image quality. The only thing that comes ergonomically close is the FS5, but that camera may have the worst internal 4K image coming out of a $1k+ video camera. With that said, I LOVE the image of my Pocket 4K and will definitely be using it for a lot of applications. But not sure I can trust it on a professional shoot until I get some real power solutions (looking forward to the tilta solutions). With this sensor, codecs, ISO-ability, menu system, etc they could have really crushed the indie crowd market with a $3k-$4k camera that had real batteries and internal NDs - even the audio is pretty great for 90% of scenarios (with one xlr and one 3.5mm).1 point -

MFT will die when people cease buying MFT cameras and lenses. People will stop buying MFT when it no longer has benefits over larger sensors. I'm invested in MFT and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. I think it will continue to lead the way in video features, will continue to offer better stabilization, and will continue to improve on its weaker points, like low light and auto focus. I'm keeping an eye on full frame, of course, but even if a full frame equivalent of the GH5 came out tomorrow I have no real need to upgrade. It's just not that important to me and I don't really get why it is for everyone else.1 point -

Raid Replacement Hard Drive Recommendations
thephoenix reacted to OliKMIA for a topic
There isn't much more you can do in terms of speed I believe since you already use Raid 5. Raid 0 with multiple disks could help but this isn't very economical. In my case I have a dedicated 1TB SSD where I put all my "hot files", the one going in my timeline to be edited. Once I'm done with that project, I delete the files from the SSD and keep them on the Raid drives. Nowadays you can find good 1TB SSD for $150. This is a simple and economical solution but the performances are much better than traditional HD.1 point -

I guess it depends where you are, but very few places are completely dark, even at night. Street lights, other house lights, passing cars... even in rural areas moonlight can light a room. I would seriously consider punching a hard light with a CTB gel through a window (as far back from the window as is practical) to mimic that light, exposed at one stop under, and expose for your flashlights maybe a half or a full stop over.1 point

This is the reason why my interest peaked in the C200. The overall feel of the image seems another level in comparison. There's an extra sauce in there. The EVA1 is still on my radar, it's an awesome camera. Just exploring the C200 from being astounded with the quality of the files. It's the Canon RAW Light storage which seems a bit scary once you do the math!1 point -

Canon M50 mirrorless camera features 4K video
MushroomDude reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
Well I have come up with this info. Looks like it does not have a clean HDMI output, and no sound over HDMI is what I see. So... It also has a Micro HDMI output, but this is not clean, showing a red dot in the frame (which could be cropped out in post if you are out to mimic a “2:35:1 cinemascope look by adding top and bottom black bars”)…. Also note that recording in 4K simultaneously internally and to a recording device is not possible. HDMI OUT terminal Type D HDMI output while recording (shooting screen without sound) available HDMI output to HDR compatible TVs* available The M50 has a Micro-B USB 2.0 port, a Micro HDMI Type-D port -- which supports HDMI output of the shooting screen without sound while recording.1 point -
I got one early August its been flat out amazing. The images even in 4k 8-bit are stunning (surprisingly good DR and this is coming from a guy who used to shoot only Epic-W). And Canon is close if not tied with Arri for making cameras that are so easy (and fun) to work with. 2 fully charged lightweight BP-60s and you can go a whole day. Remember the stunning beautiful Blue Ruin by Jeremy Saulnier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIwzTUzmXto Shot entirely on the "weak" 8-bit 1080 codec. ?1 point

To clarify once again, the Metabones Speedbooster for Sony E-Mount was popular, used by many and recommended by several reviewers to be used on the Full frame A7x. We are talking about niche stuff here. Most that uses an adapter and definitely speed boosters are a minority of camera nerds. You can't apply what the general public like to stuff like speed boosters. Because they don't buy it anyway. Metabones entire business idea is to cater to camera nerds like us that are willing to jump through all kinds of hoops. I can confirm the opposite1 point -
Panasonic Abandoning M43
sanveer reacted to currensheldon for a topic
I think Panasonic will definitely focus more on full-frame and cinema cameras moving forward. The S1 and S1r look great and an upgraded EVA-1 with L-Mount would be awesome. Where MFT will exist and thrive is in Panasonic's ability to put more advanced specs with this sensor size. For example, they were the first to really get IBIS down (Olympus MFT too), the first to offer 4K internal for a high-end hybrid camera (GH4), first to offer 4K 10-bit 422 internal (GH5), first to offer 4K 60p (GH5) and the first to offer a quality XLR adapter for a hybrid camera. So, I think Panasonic will continue to use the less processing power it takes to read a MFT sensor and also add in advanced video features to the GH6 and GH6s, namely: 6k or 8k internally (or via HDMI) 120fps or 180fps in 4K Internal ND filter (rumored to be in the S1 anyway) Better XLR adapter for high quality audio Great battery life, like in GH5 - which is leaps and bounds better than Fuji X-T3, EOS R, and Pocket 4K (I hear Sony A7III does well too, but my A7rII ate through batteries). Improved IBIS and low light - perhaps matching the GH5 IBIS with the GH5s low light If they can do these things, while also adding lenses like the 10-25mm f1.7, MFT will be strong for awhile. They could also help it out by offering a small EVA-mini with MFT sensor, IBIS, and 96-120fps in 4k.1 point -
5D2 is using Digic 4 processor 5D3 is using Digic 5.Everything that is possible with the Mark II is possible with the Mark III. 5D4 is not hacked yet. Yes, A1ex was able to run his code on the 5D4 (just like with the EosR) but he is not owning one, so he cannot continue the progress. Until one of the skilled hackers own at least one newer (Digic7+) cameras we can not expect any progress.1 point

Shoot in the dark or fake it?
Drew Allegre reacted to Mmmbeats for a topic
Wait. Shooting a dark scene does not necessarily mean crazy high ISO. You really need to think about what you are exposing for. Do you want to see beams of light, with body shapes looming out of the shadows? Or is it important to see the actors faces, even when they are in the dark parts of the set? Darkness is suggested by high contrast, not just by making everything dark. So the trick is to get some specks of bright light hitting just the things you want the audience to see. Also, it's common for dark scenes to be lit slightly higher than intended and then 'crushed' somewhat in post (the shadow values taken down). This allows you to preserve a bit of detail in the shadows without the crazy ISOs you are correctly trying to avoid. The problem you will have with this last method is that, as I mentioned before, the real trick is to preserve high contrast, and if you raise the shadows, you also have to raise everything else - in other words, your flashlight and accent lights will then have to be pretty powerful. Spot metering is your friend. Do some tests. Grade the tests. A monitoring LUT might help on set if you are doing a kind of 'day for night' job.1 point -

William Koehler reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
It's not that simple dummy. I won't bother repeating what I wrote in the article a second time. It was clearly lost on you the first time. You probably haven't got the talent to match music to images so you'll probably not understand what's at stake. Like freedom of speech there is such a thing of freedom of artistic expression, if I wanted to set some cinematography to a Pink Floyd track in the privacy of my own edit suite at home, and not release it, I am free to do that. So yes, pros do use copyrighted songs. It is when sharing the results with friends and followers where the problem is, because in order to do that in the age of the internet some form of 'publishing' has to happen and anyone can view it. You are not using it commercially, it's just for fun. Other pros have done it all the time, like Philip Bloom before the music bed, it's been very common and you Ben seem to ignore all the other issues and grey areas as well in an attempt to vote against your own artistic freedom out of some dumb attempt to simplify the subject down to either right or wrong, black or white. You are an 8bit binary thinker. You are worse than a GIF. If you were a codec, you'd be AVCHD. I was recruited by the DJ Paul Van Dyk once and he wanted to use my footage over his music. Boot on the other foot. I said yes. If artists don't share, they don't create anything. Not everything has to be about money or paying for a license.1 point -
