  1. Pleased to announce that my Pocket4K app for Android is now complete and is with beta testers so barring any calamties will be available from the Play store on the 21st of December. Here is a screen shot with a quick run through of the features from top to bottom : Across the top we have the controls for Aperture, ISO and shutter angle. Next up we have the colour temperature and tint controls, the preset white balance selectors, the Auto White Balance button and, of course, the Record button. Beneath that we have the 8 snapshot memories which you can use to store and instantly recall 8 different custom settings of ISO, Aperture, Shutter Angle and White Balance. To store the preset you long press on the memory slot that you want to use and to recall it just short press. Haptic feedback is given to indicate that the preset has been written and the currently loaded preset is denoted in orange (M1 in the shot above). Presets are stored in non volatile memory so are always available in any session. Next is the focus controller, which is operated using the slider and/or the fine tune buttons. A long press of the button moves instantly to closest focus and infinity respectively. The AF button in ths row activates the single shot auto focus. To accompany the focus controls, you then have 6 memory slots (A to F) to store focus points and you can switch instantly between them by simply pressing the required one. In addition, next to these are the controls for A-B-A focus transition and the speed control. Again, all focus points are stored in non volatile memory for use in any session. Finally we have the controls for applicable MFT power zoom lenses with the same interface as the focus controls (including long press for instant minimum/maximum zoom) and 4 non volatile memory positions for later recall. There is another function that it can do that I'll let you know about closer to release date and I will put up a little demo video of it in action late next week.

  2. I'm one of those that does. But that said, the 8 bit is not bad. It's nice to have options, especially when you are traveling light.

  3. That's one of the attractions of the Swiss Army Knife approach of the Nikon. You can stick the same camera in small bag for spontaneous moments at unprecedented quality, but the same body can also be used in the studio for shooting 10 bit log for green screen, with a recorder and audio extras.

  4. I fail to see who this osmo pocket is targeted for. My mom would not shoot with it as why would she spend any money on a camera as she has her smartphone, I as a videographer would not shoot with it as it looks non professional, the quality is no where near any real camera. None of my pro or hobbist friends wants to shoot with it for mainly the same reasons. I guess only youtubers are interested in this(for vlogging purposes).

I know the forum is mainly driven by lusting after gear and pixel peeping but if you should ever have the time and motivation, I would love to see a "behind the scenes" thread from you where you tell more about your process (without hijacking this one). Planning, shooting, post. I think your videos are some of the best I've ever seen by a participant of this forum.

  7. This couldn't have come at a better time as I downloaded R15 over the weekend and started my (super procrastinated) transition from FCPx/Premiere to Resolve. My goal is to complete at least one new tutorial every day. I'm still doing just the basics, but this thread is a bookmark. Thanks Chris

  8. You will, but it needs to be F3.5 - F8 and it needs to be 4K. I had my best luck with CLOG @ ISO500. Some of the built in profiles are nice if you turn the noise reduction all the way down. Talking about this camera makes me want this camera again. The colors it produces are just really so nice. Perfect camera to bring on trips, as long as you’re only shooting in the day. The range on the lens is incredible.

  9. Yeah, I'm really unhappy with how I delivered that conclusion. The point I was trying to make is that if you only want to carry the camera, the GH5 and X-T3 are much more full featured. If you add an external recorder, however the Z6 and to a lesser extent the Z7 become extremely compelling. The audio issues can certainly be worked around as well, but I remember shooting with Canon DSLRs and occasionally being forced to use an underpowered mic. I do think the main purchasers for video will almost exclusively be people with a large selection of Nikkor AF glass.

  10. Hi there, I would like to get a smooth slow motion with motion blur when rendering 60fps slow motion footage to 24fps. Can I shoot with the 180 shutter degree rule with 60fps ? Looks good in post production.

  11. I've seen many good comments about the LS3000 in the past. With built-in ND, etc. At $2K it doesn't seem that bad, but in the world of Fuji XT-3 and surely soon XH-2 I wonder if it makes sense anymore. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1096581-REG/jvc_gy_ls300_4kcam_handheld_s35mm.html

Thank you, I always highly value your experience, and this one does not disappoint ! Don't tempt me on the 300 PF, I'm fighting this for weeks The 500 PF seems to be quite great too. Problem is they cost more than my car (at least for the 500 !). My girlfriend is a wildlife photographer, and she is tempted by the 300 PF as well ! I need to check how a VR lens works with the new FTZ and ibis on Z bodies. If it adds a substantial gain in stabilization, by combining the benefits of both, it will surely be very interesting. Yes, the 70-200 + TC is appealing, as I've used it in the past with great results. But I was thinking of covering this focal range with a 85mm and a 135mm, or maybe a 70-200 f4 (love this for landscape in the mountains : light and useful). So, many choices and parameters to weigh up ! The good thing is that I can find most of the lenses cheap on mpb (I think they can deliver to France). Thanks again, I'll let you know what I find.

  17. because we are not 90 years old, we know that most people will always prefer their mobile phones for photos and video than another dedicated device, however small it is. The future for amateurs is better cameras in phones, not another device, we are past that. Professionals now, is another subject, of course your mom would be able to shoot something with a better spec-ed camera, but I do not see, even a 100$ wedding video shot by her, and usually wedding videos cost a lot mre. There will always be some demand for professionals of sight and sound. Tools are not getting better only for amateurs, but for pros too. Obviously media creating will be mandatory for next generations, something to learn on primary schools, but some people will be professionals, some hobbyists, and the vast majority will do something else in their life - almost like today, or 50 years ago, when the need for media creation was miniscule, and the population of earth half of what it is now. Now, if GoPro's and 1/3456234564" inch drones are good enough for you you must be very lucky, because you sell your C100, and still got cash on your hand after buying a cheap drone and a cheap action cam.

  18. I forgot it went to 2.8 on the wide end. 2.8 is great. I just notice the image gets noticeably mushy if you’re all the way closed down.

  19. I said "HYBRID enthusiasts". I was referring to people that care both for video and photos, not the general public. A) phones are good enough for the masses (so why spend more for the Osmo Pocket) B) Alexa, and similar cameras, have no reason to have excellent performance in high ISO and they aren't meant for prosumer use anyeay C) Enthusiasts need something more than a phone for their hobby, even if it is only for the statement of it.

Optically, it is at least as good as the PF. It is also not far off being a third of the price used against a new PF. Another plus is that it has a physical aperture control so is more flexible in terms of being used on a different camera type whereas with the PF using Nikon's new electronic control you are limited to only being able to control the aperture with a Nikon body. So it performs as well as the new one, is much cheaper and also more versatile. Against that, of course, is that it is twice the weight, about a third bigger and doesn't have VR. Until the Z series came along, it would be that final aspect that would be a deal breaker for a lot of people but IBIS should address that. I'm saying should as I've never tested that so I can't comment with any authority over it but anecdotaly it does seem to work well. Which leaves us with the size and weight issue. My use for the original version was for events where a long lens wouldn't be the primary lens I'd be shooting on but wanted the ability to have that extra reach if I needed without having to haul a 300mm f2.8 or 400mm f2.8 with me. So things such as press conferences or close action positional stuff like boxing or track cycling etc. It worked very well in that capacity and the weight and bulk saving was a godsend versus the f2.8 But then the PF version appeared and moved all of that to another level, particularly with the addition of VR, so it was an instant buy for me! As I say, the Z series will take care of the VR part but the original lens is still quite a lump which may be a drawback or at least less desirable, for your intended use. It certainly was for mine. If you were looking for a compromise solution then for somewhere roughly in the middle price wise you could maybe look at a used 70-200mm f2.8 with a 1.4TC. In terms of size, it isn't far off the same as the original 300mm f4 and it would give you near enough the same on the long end with the TC with the added versatility of being a zoom but also taking the TC off and getting the extra stop back. The bottom line for me is that if the PF didn't exist then I would still happily be using the original and if I was buying from scratch then provided I didn't need the lens to be stabilised I wouldn't have a particular problem getting it again at that significant saving. For my needs though, the size and weight is a significant enough advantage that it is worth stretching for but your needs may be different. I would definitely recommend you going and trying one first with your own camera though to make sure it works as a combo for you. But just make sure that you aren't tempted to try the PF version out while you are there

  21. Yeah that would be the easiest, I guess we could start a kickstarter and gather the amount fairly fast. But A1ex does not want it. I guess besides the testers, that A1ex is mainly the only dev these days. Other devs would help out immense. We could maybe do a EOSHD kickstarter for buying a used one, and give a 5D IV to a trusted user on here that has some dev skills that wants and can help out? Not sure if there are any users on here that apply for this?

Thanks! I guess it’s time to tryout the 4K ? I got mine for $700 ? So it’s best to keep the aperture above F3.5? ? I did shoot a lot of test footage at F2.8..

  24. Yeah a newer Lada is not much of a status symbol. But at least you can afford to get it repaired, unlike some of the high end Bimmers. I could not afford one if someone gave me one.

  25. Because downsampling decreases noise, thus giving more dr in the shadows (at the expense of resolution of course).

  26. P4K is a cinema camera, Nikon Z series, a hybrid one. I find it rather useful to deliver high demanding bit rate to output as finest codec acquisition as possible. Mediocrity is a plague. Let alone any politics discussion like the one this picture may pop up in our heads:
    1 point
  27. If "normal" people liked Cine stuff every camera would have that look. That look is rare as hell even in a Cine camera. It doesn't just pop out of the camera, any camera. Average people like video that is bleeding edge sharp and the manufacturers make all of the consumer ones that way. They go to Disney World or to their sons football game to get sharp as hell shots. 98% of all the photos in the world anymore are taken on a Smartphone, and I would bet one hell of a high percentage of video is taken on one, and I doubt many of them are Cinematic, Filmic. Most movies in the world are now seen on a LCD TV not in movie theaters. And most are in 720p and the detail, compression on them pretty much sucks from the cable provider, let alone all the crap that is added, or worse subtracted in the actual TV to knock down what quantity that is left.. So the recognize good aesthetics thing is sort of a thing of the past also. I am afraid the "cheap my nephew put together" is more the norm now sad to say. Film is dead in more ways than one these days. Most young people don't know what it even is, and don't even care. Most new films that are out are fast action stuff, shot digitally, with 2/3 the movie VFX on steroids, with the volume set to 12. There is so much going on in these new movies you don't even have time to actually look at the camera aesthetics, you are memorized by the all that is happening. It is sensory overload more than anything now. It's a shame really, great movies are becoming a thing of the past that are really special. They are all becoming cookie cutter Marvel Comic book stuff that is mostly computer generated with no real regard to a Cine, Filmic look. Just a lot of flashing lights with fight scenes, humans versus the machines. That is somewhat believable. True rating of even the Arri Alexa is 14 to 14 1/2, 15 tops. So no consumer, prosumer camera is really going to be as high as an Arri. It has all been exaggerated a bit for years.

  29. I reckon the Nikon Z6 will still appeal to shooters who really really want to shoot FF 10bit 4K (which is the only way to do it! Short of stumping up the money for a Kinefinity MAVO LF, or even more for a C700 FF etc)

Once you're familiar with how to use it then it's good to learn tools you don't know yet, but in the beginning its good to concentrate on how you like to work. Pumping out little 10-60s videos is fun and gets you familiar with the whole workflow

    Canon XC10 4K camcorder

@BenEricson is correct that you should try it in 4K mode.. @webrunner5 is wrong here - the XC10 in 4K 305Mbps mode has the edge on the C100, it's a closely run race though, which is a tribute to the C100 because it's doing it with about 10% the file size. You may also want to play with sharpening and see what you prefer there. I like the less sharpened look but everyone is different

  35. Hi yes I tried it and it works fine. although liveview is a bit crazy with the screen heavily stretched vertically. When corrected in post, the image comes out at an aspect ratio of 4.6:1 which isn't very useable. You can crop the sides off down to 2.35:1 ratio but then you loose quite a bit of resolution. I'll test it further though. There's someone who stuck an anti-aliasing filter into their EF to EF-M adapter using sellotape, sounds like an interesting solution! I might try that one day!

  36. Thats the one....... The red dot is part of the alignement mechanism (how you adjust the alignment of the anamorphot) However that whole black plastic bottom part is removable. It's best to remove that and get a clamp so you can align it properly. This is a video I uploaded tonight all shot on the Ikon and Helios 44/2 as the taking lens........ Its nothing special just a journey home from work I shot the other night. I've been so busy I've not really shot much with it. There's not much info on this lens though so thought I would upload something. If anyone has any questions about it I'm happy to answer.

  37. It already has more than enough potential as is - video quality is good enough and a stable shot is worth more than dynamic range. It is meant to create content with minimal fuss. It is not meant for creating works of art with exceptional color depth yada, yada. I can totally imagine using it while hiking in the Alps, taking it out of the pocket for a quick 1-5 minute clip every half hour - no setup required. You could say that it would not disrupt the experience for the creator as well, since you would not be fiddling with gear to get a good/perfect shot. And a walking clip gives a far better feel for the scenery as a boring standstill pan without a gimbal. And then, there that awesome moving timelapse mode ... sounds amazing, just set it up as you grab a bite before continuing a hike.

  41. Yes, and I know some photographers that are asked by clients to dive into video, so the Z line might be attractive, instead of switching to Sony. It also could sparks an interest among a larger audience ; I'm reading more and more comments on forums (video oriented, or photo specialized with a dedicated video section), from video shooters that are really intrigued by 10bit/FF/ibis/robust construction. Personally, despite having no Nikkor lenses, I've chosen the z6 over the a7iii, primarily for build quality and handling. Better evf, lcd and touchscreen, great ibis, desirable Nikkor G line-up and lovely colors are a plus. I will also attach a lot of non AF lenses, as I would've done with Sony. Won't be a problem to share it later with a bmpcc4k or a gh5s. But, if it had not been for the Z line, I would not be back to Nikon today (or only for stills).

  43. A quick follow-up on my previous first impressions, + issues found on the web : - As mentioned everywhere, the AF starts to really struggles as the available light decreases. Absolutely not a deal-breaker for my type of stills shooting (maybe with wildlife though), but surely for sport shooters. - Ibis during video recording with the adapted 50 1.8G impresses me. - Ibis with the native 24-70 s is really good at the wide and normal focals, but clearly less effective near 70mm. I've tried to shoot handheld in DX mode, so at around 105mm ; it was cold, windy and, despite trying my best to stay steady and avoid shakiness, the result is just OK. At full screen on my monitor, you clearly see the micro-jitters. I've repeated the same test, but with my gorilla pod as a stabilizer, and it's working a lot better. I will try with a Tamron 150-600 and other lenses, to understand what work better, between ibis, lense VR etc. I also think that it's related to me and my previous video experience : shooting APSC fuji with the stabilized 50-140 f2.8 was really great (even more with the 50-230 OIS), while full-frame is a lot less forgiving with long focal lengths. - The 24-70 is a lot more silent than my 50 1.8G. I've read somewhere that they have design the new motorisation with this goal in mind - Did not try the audio pre-amps, but the first reviews show that they really suck. I will use my zoom H5 or the Ninja V. - Image quality straight out of the camera with the tweaked standard profile (noise reduc disabled, sharpness dialled down etc.) is lovely ; I've shoot a cloudy sunset until dusk, so not an extreme dynamic range, and this profile was sufficient. Next time I will use the flat one. - I'm really happy to work again with Nikon's colours (and the Jpgs SOOC are great) - I want to buy some Samyang lenses (135 f2, 24 f1.4...), and it seems that there is an issue with the Nikon version : they include an electronic chip, and it appears to "bug" with FTZ. A guy successfully "masked" with tape the involved contact of a similar manual lens (Voigtlander if I remember), and it worked. I think I will try the VDSLR versions of those lenses, as it seems they are not equipped with electronic. Sorry, I'm limited in my tests latitude, but it's already night when I come back home... Can't wait for the week-end.
